Summer Rec Program begins June 20th There’s still time and room to plant in Boardman’s Community Garden

The summer activities in Boardman just keep getting better!

Boardman Park & Recreation District has planned all winter long to dream up fun activities for everyone this summer.

For children ages 5 - 12, Funtastic Kidz begins June 20th and runs to July 21st. The program is offered Monday through Thursdays, from 8:30 - 11:30 am and free bussing is provided. A bus schedule will be available at signups, which will be at the first day of the program at Boardman Marina Park, Harold Baker Pavilion in the Day Use area.

The program is free and many themes have been developed to hold active kids’ interests. They will learn about water safety, enjoy the Park’s water slide (always a popular activity on hot days!), learn about fireworks safety and create many arts and crafts projects.

With the late arrival of spring this year, you have plenty of time yet to plant your garden. The Garden is located at the NW corner of Columbia Blvd. and North Main Street. The City brought in soil, installed water hydrants, and marked the plots, which are 5’ wide by 36’ long. Check with the City for your own space in the Community Garden, 481-9252.

Music in the Parks begins June 13 Grab your lawn chairs and head for Boardman or Irrigon Marina Parks each Monday evening beginning June 13th for another season of free, wonderful entertainment! The Music in the Parks committee has gathered 10 groups of entertainers that are sure to please everyone. The season begins June

Frank Carlson, 55, is an engineering aide for Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative in Baker City, OR. He spent 22 years in the military as the Active Guard Reserve (AGR) working full-time for the Oregon Army National Guard and retired in 2003. He moved to Baker City in 2003 and is now currently working for Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative. He is originally from Hawaii, born in Seoul, Korea but grew up in Hawaii and calls Hawaii his home.

Frank is married to Anne Garlock who is originally from Baker City, Oregon. Anne has five children and Frank raised four children. Anne is also a performer who has sung with Sweet Adleines, an International Barber Shop group. Anne is also the number one fan of Frank.

“I like all kinds of music,” he says. You may see Frank referred to as MawTae Frank Carlson which is his proper name. He recently recorded 16 tracks for his first album called Frank “Alone” which is now on sale.

The following Monday, June 20th at Irrigon Marina Park, you’ll enjoy the smooth tunes from trio Bluezette. BlueZette offers a delightful blend of retro tunes along with current hits including favorites from the Fifth Dimension, Burt Bacharach, and Sergio Mendes as well as Norah Jones. They have put their own spin on several favorite standards which are sure to please many musical tastes.

BlueZette made their Tri-City debut in November of 2004 at Savvy Affair a Fashion Show benefiting Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Since then, they have enjoyed appearing at many grand openings, private and corporate parties, and performed at many Washington wineries. They also played at the 2005 Sound Bite Tri-Cities in Columbia Park featuring Chris Botti.

The release of their CD “Debut” in January of 2009 is their most recent project allowing music lovers a chance to hear BlueZette favorites on a “nearly live “CD. Dog Agility classes begin in June

On May 22nd we had a wonderful time in Boardman City Park putting to use our new agility equipment and training our dogs.

The event was to introduce dog agility to Boardman as a new activity that is now available in our area. I will be starting a beginner agility class in June and am looking for people interested in having fun with their dog and learning the sport of agility.

The people who participated are all members of the Columbia Basin Dog Training Club of TriCities and currently competing in AKC Agility Trials throughout the NW. Present were Rose Wilson, Brenda Trowbridge, Stacia Gunderson, Tracy Hill, DeAnn Nelson, Monika Schmidt, Annie Williams, Patty O’Blenness, and

myself, Mim Myren.

Agility is a wonderful and positive sport that bonds a dog and handler together. All training is done though positive reinforcement by use of toys, treats and love. Obedience is mandatory. To begin, a dog only needs the basics: sit, down, stay and come. A dog must be 1 year old to start training on equipment, and be nonaggressive to other dogs. Breed or size does not matter.

The cost is $30 for a 6 week class beginning at 7:00 pm at the Boardman City park. There are prerequisites for a dog to start an agility class and a limit of 6 dogs.

SWCD to conduct interviews with well The Morrow Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) will be conducting interviews with well owners in the Boardman and Irrigon areas whose wells have been tested for Nitrates for many years by Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. Well water sample data shows increases and decreases in Nitrate concentrations. The purpose of the interviews is to gather land based information, such as, current and historical well location, well depth, compared to locations of septic systems, other wells, irrigation canals, surface water and agriculture operations.

Letters will be mailed to landowners, and followed by a phone call, requesting a date and time that is convenient for landowners to meet with SWCD staff to complete the interview.

Dear Community Summer is almost here, just 3 weeks away! That means the 4th of July is just around the corner!

The Ford Family Foundation Morrow County Leadership program has come to an end. This was a great class and I think everyone really enjoyed the experience. Special thanks to Rural Development Initiatives and to the Ford Foundation for their commitment to Mor-

row County. The next step in the Ford Institute for Community Building is the Effective Organizations. We will be meeting this fall to start selection for the Spring of 2012.

Graduation is coming up soon for our Seniors! The class of 2011 has been very active in the community and a lot of fun to work with the last few years. It is hard to believe that my step-grandson gradu-

ated from High School last week in Missouri. How do kids keep growing up and we adults don’t get any older!?!

We are working hard to bring you a great community celebration for the 4th of July. If you have any ideas for the event, please be sure to let us know. We can’t always accommodate every request because of logistics or manpower, but

we do want to make this the best event for our community that we can.

Music in the Parks starts in Boardman on June 13 at 7:00 pm and we will also have our first Farmer’s Market from 5 – 8 pm.

Parade Parade registration forms are now available at the Chamber office. Please help us make this an even bigger and better parade by having your business enter a “float”. It is always a lot of fun for the participants and the spectators.

Contact the chamber for more information on the parade. The parade route will line up on East Front Street and go down Main, then turn west on Columbia, turn south on 3 rd Street and back east on Boardman Ave to finish the parade.

Farmer’s Market Boardman will have a Farmer’s Market this summer. The first one will be on Monday, June 13 at the Boardman Marina Park from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm in conjunction with Music in the Park. We hope to see you every other Monday throughout the summer.

KIWANIS PLANS SATURDAY NIGHT DANCE AND LESSONS

The Boardman chapter of Kiwanis is planning a weekly saturday night dance beginning June 25th.

Each evening will include a one hour dance lesson from 7-8pm and open dancing from 8-10pm.

The first night will feature a beginner salsa lesson.

Open to all individuals but children 14 and under will be required to have an adult present. Cost is $2 per person. Final location to be determined. For more information see flyers and www.boardmankiwanis.org/

Summer Term begins June 27 Registration for Blue Mountain Community College’s Summer and Fall Term is now underway. Students who are planning or considering taking classes in those terms are urged to register now for best class selection. Registration will remain open until the first week of each term but classes do fill quickly once the registration window opens. Summer term begins June 27 with the last day to add and drop classes as well as the last day to pay is July 1. Fall term classes begin September 26; last day to add, drop and pay is September 30.

Degree seeking students must be advised into classes but advising is available at BMCC Boardman. Call for an appointment at 541-481-2099. Appointments are available Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-5:30 pm. Students wishing to take writing or math classes must have a placement test score in place so they know where to start. Placement tests are also available at BMCC Boardman on Mondays and Wednesdays or other days by appointment. It is a good idea to call ahead to make arrangements for

placement tests. The fee is $10.

A couple of credit classes will be offered this summer via ITV at BMCC Boardman which means the facility will be available for testing and other services on Tues. and Thurs. evenings during summer term. At this time, ENG 106, Introduction to Literature is being offered and there is a possibility that Mth70 will also be available.

Karen Kegler and Maria Richards are teaming up to offer a Summer Strength and Conditioning class. The class will be available on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-6 pm starting June 20.

It will run 10 weeks until August 24 if at least ten people sign up. The class will feature weight training as well as floor and core work if the students desire that. Call 541-4812099 for more information or register for the class at www.bluecc.edu and click on the “Interactive Online Schedule.”

Spring term will be wrapping up the second week of June and that will also wrap up the 2010-2011 academic year. Everything starts anew with summer term being the first of the 2011-2012 academic year.

Kids enjoy hands-on learning at Willow Creek Watershed Field Day Over 108 5th graders attended the Annual Willow Creek WFD on Wednesday, May 4 th at Duane Neiffer’s property west of Lexington. Students from Heppner, Ione, & Boardman stepped off of their buses, gathered in groups with an Ione student leader and headed for the various stations.

With the help of Ryan Watts, Wildlands, Inc., Kevin Payne, Resource Tech, from Morrow SWCD & Dawn Callow, Riverside HS Science teacher, the students planted willow cuttings on the banks of Willow Creek. At this station they learned how planting the trees helps to protect the stream bank.

At the weather station, National Weather Service Hydrologist Dennis Hull and Rob Brooks helped students take temperature and humidity readings. As a weather balloon was released, one student tracked its direction with a compass, another watched its height with a range finder and a third wrote down the direction and elevation at certain points as the balloon floated away. This taught the kids how the wind patterns may change as the balloon moved from groundlevel to higher elevations.

At the Water Quality Station Dieter Waite’s Heppner HS Science class, Joe Armato, Taighler Dougherty, Natalie Rauch, Shane Smith, Justin Bailey & Colby Goebel helped students measure basic water quality parameters including pH, turbidity, conductivity, temperature, and dissolved oxy-

Boardman guys have Cookoff fun

By Suzanne Gray Ron Ford and Ivan Akers have been friends for years working on rigs, riding motorcycles and grilling. Matter of fact, Ron has a “barbeque-land” in his Columbia Avenue shop. With a current count of five, one incorporating car parts may be finished for the second annual cook off. When Ron heard about the Scorchin’ Summer Rib Cook Off in Boardman, he kept after Ivan to join because, “It’s gonna be fun”. On the day of competition, each started out with a rub individually mixed together. The exact ingredient list was not discussed due to the company (each other). Both men used hickory wood to smoke their ribs followed by a “Texas crutch” slow cook on gas grills and finished off with a searing before slathering in sauce.

Minimal tools were needed besides the grill/smoker units and required cleaning buckets. Strategizing cook time so as not to present dried or cold ribs may have been the edge for winning. Ivan accepted help from his wife Jane and friend Penny in plating his ribs for the judges. Ron had several family members perform ‘quality checks’ during the competition. Ivan and Ron skipped on the People’s Choice option in 2010 but both consider it this year. These friends suggest potato salad with onions and Ruffle’s original chips as sides to their ribs with iced-tea or coke to wash it down. The most helpful part of the contest for Ivan was the canopy and chair; for Ron it was his modified smoker. Ron noted

Do you recall reading that extra weight can protect your bones? If so, you probably thought, hey, great – at least it’s good for something.

Well, sorry, but researchers are now making somewhat of an 180-degree turn – or, at least when it comes to “spare tires.” It looks as though extra belly weight doesn’t only increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes. It may also increase your risk of osteoporosis. That’s the condition causing fragile, porous bones in about 10 million Americans and leading to more than 1.5 million fractures each year.

A Harvard study looked at 50 premenopausal women who had an average body mass index (BMI) of about 30, which is considered obese. It found that women who packed away more fat around their middles had lower bone mineral density, a set-up for fragile bones.

Researchers aren’t sure why this kind of fat hurts bones.

But they do know that deep belly fat releases fatty acids into the liver. It also releases other substances and hormones that are hard on the heart and pancreas. It could be that similar changes are wreaking havoc with your bones, too.

Now you’ve got one more reason to let loose of those love handles. That’s especially true if you are female, 65 or older, slender, Caucasian or Asian, or you have a family history of osteoporosis.

These are other osteoporosis risk factors, but ones you can mostly control: * * * * *

You have low estrogen.

You eat a diet low in calcium and vitamin D. Your lifestyle is lacking in physical activity.

You smoke or drink too much alcohol.

You take certain medications, such as cortisone or chemotherapy.

So how can you know if your belly is too big, and what can you do about it? Use a soft tape measure to check your waist. If you’re a woman and your waist measures 35 inches or more, it’s time to lose a little. (If you’re a man, that number is 40 inches or more.)3 Also use a BMI chart to help guide yourself into a healthy weight range (18.5–24.9).

The good news is that belly fat is often the first fat to go.

That’s because it’s more metabolically active.3 Other steps for banishing the big belly? For example, eat more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, which fill you up faster, combined with proteins. Eat fewer refined foods like white rice or bread, which elevate your blood sugar, often leading to a faster deposit of fat.

And, don’t forget the other side of the weight-loss equation: exercise. Extra crunches aren’t the answer, even though that might seem like a logical place to start. Instead, work up to 60 minutes of aerobic exercise like brisk walking a day, combined with regular resistance training to build calorie-burning muscles.

Oregon State University Extension Service encourages sustainable gardening practices. Preventative pest management is emphasized over reactive pest control.

Identify and monitor problems before acting, and opt for the least toxic approach that will remedy the problem.

First consider cultural, and then physical controls. The conservation of biological control agents (predators, parasitoids) should be favored over the purchase and release of biological controls. Use chemical controls only when necessary, only after identifying a pest problem, and only after thoroughly reading the pesticide label. Leasttoxic choices include insecticidal soaps, horticultural oils, botanical insecticides, organic and synthetic pesticides — when used judiciously.

Planning • Construct trellises for tomatoes, cucumbers, pole beans, and vining ornamentals.

Maintenance and Clean Up • Prune lilacs, forsythia, rhododendrons, and azaleas after blooming.

• Fertilize vegetable garden 1 month after plants emerge by side dressing alongside rows.

• Harvest thinnings from new plantings of lettuce, onion, and chard.

• Pick ripe strawberries regularly to avoid fruit-rotting diseases.

• Use organic mulches to conserve soil moisture in ornamental beds. An inch or two of sawdust, barkdust, or composted leaves will minimize loss of water through evaporation.

• After normal fruit drop of apples, pears and peaches in June, consider thinning the remainder to produce a larger crop of fruit.

• Make sure raised beds receive enough water for plants to avoid

drought stress. If a green lawn is desired, make sure lawn areas are receiving adequate water (approximately 0.5 to 1.5 inches per week from June through August). Deep watering less often is more effective than frequent shallow watering. Measure your water use by placing an empty tuna can where your irrigation water lands.

• (Mid-June): If green lawns are being maintained through the summer, apply 1 lb. nitrogen per 1,000 sq.ft. to lawns.

Planting/Propagation • Plant dahlias and gladioli.

Pest Monitoring and Management • First week: spray cherry trees for cherry fruit fly, as necessary, if fruit is ripening.

• Blossoms on squash and cucumbers begin to drop: this is nothing to worry about. Cherries may also drop fruit: this is not a major concern.

• Control garden weeds by pulling, hoeing, or mulching.

• Control aphids on vegetables as needed by hosing off with water or by using insecticidal soap or a registered insecticide.

• Watch for 12-spotted beetles

• First week: spray for codling moth in apple and pear trees, as necessary. Continue use of pheromone traps for insect pest detection.

• Learn to identify beneficial insects and plant some insectary plants (e.g. Alyssum, Phacelia, coriander, candytuft, sunflower, yarrow, dill) to attract them to your garden.

• Monitor azaleas, primroses and other broadleaf ornamentals for adult root weevils. Look for fresh evidence of feeding (notching at leaf edges). Try sticky trap products on plant trunks to trap adult weevils. Protect against damaging the bark by applying the sticky material on a 4-inch wide

on beans and lettuce and cabbage worms or flea beetles in cole crops (cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts). Remove the pests by hand or treat with registered pesticides.

• Spray peas as first pods form, if necessary, to control weevils.

• Birch trees dripping a sticky fluid from their leaves means that aphids are present. Control as needed.

• Use yellow sticky traps to monitor for cherry fruit fly. About 1 week after the first fly is caught, spray cherries at appropriate intervals.

• Last week: second spray for codling moth in apple and pear trees, as necessary.

Boardman considers stop signs at active intersection The Boardman City Council has asked City staff to prepare a Resolution to place three stop signs at the intersection of Oregon Trail Boulevard and Anderson Road for their consideration. At Tuesday’s meeting of the Boardman City Council, citizens expressed their concerns for safety at that intersection. Currently there are no stop signs and vehicles are entering the intersection at a high rate of speed, which has caused incidences of vehicles going off the roadway and into neighboring yards. Property owners near the intersection, said a lot of children

live in that neighborhood. Interim Chief Loren Dieter initially asked the Council to consider a stop sign at the north end of Anderson. After hearing the problem appears to be both leaving and entering Oregon Trail Boulevard, the Council wants to consider placing three signs to stop traffic in all directions.

The Council plans to take action on this Resolution at their June 7th meeting.

In other City business, Councilors approved expanding the boundaries of the Columbia River Enterprise Zone to include a portion on which Three Mile Canyon

Farms is constructing a methane digester. The Council also gave authorization for the City Manager to sign an Intergovernmental Agreement with the Morrow County Health District in order to make a donation to the Columbia River Community Health Services new clinic project. At the suggestion of Councilor Pratt, the Mayor formed a committee to explore the possibility of building a Splash Pad water park in Boardman.

The next meeting of the Boardman City Council will be Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at Boardman City Hall Council Chambers and will begin at 7pm.

Cub Scouts Pack 615 active in the community Saturday May 7th the Boardman Cub Scouts Pack 615 led the American Flag Salute at the Cinco De Mayo celebration held at the Marina Park. After the celebration they picked up trash and cleaned up the planter in front of the Boardman Library.

Cub Scouts include Tiger Cubs and Webelos Scouts. The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation’s largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. The BSA provides a program for young people

that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness. The program emphasizes shared leadership, learning about the community, and family understanding.

Do you know what a Promotora is?

A Promotora is defined as an outreach worker in a Hispanic community who is responsible for raising awareness of health and educational issues. The Promotoras at Columbia River Community Health Services are busier than ever working to make sure citizens in North Morrow County are well taken care of.

Columbia River Community Health Services currently has two Promotoras; Maria Romero who has been with the clinic for seven years and Sandra Pacheco who has worked at the clinic since 2007.

Some of the tasks our Promotoras oversee are the sliding scale fee program, the dental health program, and the transportation program; they also help with providing translators for the patients and overseeing referral to outside health services such as mental health counseling and pre-natal care. Promotoras also regularly attend events such as school open houses and children’s fairs to promote the services offered by the clinic.

In the month of May alone CRCHS Promotoras attended six events covering 15 days, many of them lasting ten or more hours.

for visits from the Tooth Taxi, a cooperative effort with the Dental Foundation of Oregon, to both Irrigon Elementary and Sam Boardman Elementary. They also provide scheduling and other support services to the Medical Teams International Dental Van when it visits the clinic. Through a partnership with Columbia Basin College Promotoras are able to help patients receive reduced cost dental cleanings and a new program in cooperation with Advantage Dental will provide dental hygiene to students at Riverside High school.

The deadline to participate in the Riverside dental program is June 9th and more information can be obtained from the clinic or the High school.

And finally, as if they aren’t busy enough, the Columbia River Community Health Services Promotoras are planning to be offer classes teaching patients how to “Live Well with Chronic Conditions.” The classes will cover strategies including diet and exercise to manage conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. Boardman elementary schools, attended a Latino Leadership conference, represented CRCHS at the Morrow County Children’s Fair and drove patients to dental cleaning appointments at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Washington.

Promotoras assist patients on the sliding scale fee arrangement by helping them complete the paperwork, make sure the correct supporting documents are attached, and reminding patients when their renewal forms are due. Promotoras provide translating services for the patients so they can interact with the health care providers and get the most out of their visit to the clinic. Promotoras ensure that any patient in need of transportation to and from the clinic receives a ride. When a patient needs a referral to a mental health specialist or to an obstetrician for prenatal care the Promotoras help the patient fill out the appropriate paperwork and ensures their appointments are made with the provider. The CRCHS Promotoras also help patients fill out forms for prescription medication assistance and to obtain appropriate coverage through the Oregon Health Plan.

Dear Friends: On behalf of my family I would like to thank all that participated in the celebration of life for our mother Carol Hilling after her recent funeral and burial.

She was a longtime resident of Boardman and passed away peacefully on April 21 after a long journey with Alzheimer’s. To us she will be remembered as a wife or helpmate to our father; a nurturer to children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; and a lifelong confidant to her friends.

There are a number of childhood memories that come to the forefront of our brain, but as adults the last 11 years are the years we will truly remember the most. When mother was first diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease many of us were in denial. Not knowing what to expect with this debilitating disease we did our homework and read as much as we possibly could. The first book I recommend is My Journey into Alzheimer’s. After reading this book I realized some of us would need to make some personal changes in our busy schedule. I needed to slow down in my speech, in my mannerisms, and be certain to show eye contact. I would come to respect her feelings more, and treat her with dignity; making sure she was involved in conversations and decisions made on her behalf.

When it was evident in 2000 that we needed to relocate her to assisted living, I will be forever grateful to my family who agreed that we should move her to Moses Lake WA. We had no idea how much our life would change as we watched her condition gradually worsen and she would no longer be able to communicate or recognize us. We

Letters to the Editor are forever grateful to her friends and other family who supported our decision, encouraging us that the move would keep her safe and cared for, even if it meant downsizing her home of 40 years in Boardman. We are also blessed for the number of caregivers who knew her during her stay in Moses Lake; always allowing her to live with dignity and grace, and loving her as if she were their own mother or grandmother.

The year we moved her to Moses Lake we took two road trips knowing this would be the last time she would remember who her extended families were: One to Minneapolis, and one to Montana. We laughed and sang on the road, reminisced with family once we arrived and documented the trip in a memory book. Our siblings would make a point to gather for her birthday in December and again on Mother’s day. In between she would have visitors off and on throughout the year.

But it was evident that she missed her closest friends in Boardman.

Prior to this disease she was an active citizen, traveling on short road trips, and planning how she would spend her retirement visiting her children (8), grandchildren and great grandchildren scattered throughout the states.

As the Alzheimer’s moved from stage to stage; our conversations became short and brief. It was evident she was slipping away fast. Once she moved to stage three, there were days she would have a glimmer in her eyes or she would say a short sentence when we visited. We will always believe that on those days, she recognized us, even if it was just briefly.

On the day of her passing it was Holy Week. I posted the following on my Facebook the next morning. Easter is a time of celebrating new life and one of my mother’s favorite seasons. She planted flowers, nurturing them to full bloom so all could see God’s wonderful creation. With great sadness I share the news of her passing last evening. However, I am also joyful that she has now met our loving Savior so close to Resurrection Sunday and received the ultimate healing and a new body.

We do not know what mother’s last thoughts were before she left us on her journey to heaven. But Ps. 18 came to mind in my quite time after her passing. …I call to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies. Mom’s enemy was her illness with Alzheimer’s. Before her diagnosis

she was an active, vibrant, fun loving mother raising a large family. Afterwards she became non-communicative, other than a combination of words that made only perfect sense to her.

Two days after her death I finished a book entitled Unlocked. I began to understand more clearly how people can misunderstand certain illnesses.

At the celebration we released three dozen spring-colored balloons in her honor. Although we will miss her dearly we are at peace of her passing from life into death. She is now unlocked from an illness she carried with her over 10 years. She has received the ultimate healing.

With much love and appreciation, thanks to everyone who helped make the celebration memorable for all of us.
