Columbia River Community Health Services opens doors on new clinic May 22 Approximately four years ago Columbia River Community Health Services began a campaign to build a new clinic. On May 22, 2012, the first patient walked through the new facility’s doors at 450 Tatone Street. Patients entering the front doors for the first time were in awe of the beautiful high ceiling in the lobby, the accessibility of the exam rooms with wide open corridors and brightly lit spaces. Columbia River Community Health Services is a non-profit organization overseen by a Board of Directors made up of ten community members and users of the clinic services. Mindy Binder, Executive Director; Marta Barajas, Financial Director, and Dr. Robert Boss, Medical Director, oversee the
day to day functions of the facility. The Board of Directors and staff at Columbia River Community Health Services would like to thank everyone involved in making the new facility a reality. This is a building the community can be proud of for years to come. In order to share their beautiful new building with the public, a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for June 29, 2012, at 450 Tatone Street. Lunch will be served from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 12:00 p.m. Tours of the new facility will be offered during the event. Chamber luncheon guest speaker, Jerry Boomer of Greenway Academy The Chamber Membership Lunch will be held on Wednesday, June 20 at 12:00 noon at the Port of Morrow. Our guest speaker will be Mr. Jerry Boomer, President, Greenways Academy. Greenways Academy is an established accredited on line school serving 5th – 12th grade. They offer courses from Special Education to Honors Classes. They feature exciting electives such as Ag Science, Oceanography and over 100 Foreign Language courses.
Greenways Academy is able to modify the curriculum per each student’s IEP or 504 Plan. The mission of Greenways Academy is to motivate, educate, and Graduate. Riverside Jr/Sr High School is excited to utilize the services of Greenways Academy to enhance their current programs. Boardman appoints Brenda Profitt to City Council position
Brenda Profitt, Boardman City Council
The Boardman City Council appointed Brenda Profitt to the Boardman City Council Tuesday night. She will fill the vacancy left by Mark Pratt, who resigned in April due to moving outside the City limits. Ms. Profitt was among four citizens who submitted letters of interest and were interviewed by the Council Tuesday night. The other citizens interested were Paul Beagle, Bill Ellis, and Tony Navarro. Ms. Profitt is an educator with the Morrow County School District. She said she has lived in Boardman
for eight years, and is interested in working with the Council to promote development in Boardman. She has been an active member of the community, developing relationships with special interest groups including the local police department, fire department, chamber of commerce, and social clubs. The Council position she is appointed to will expire December 31, 2014. In other City news, the Council approved the City Recorder’s job description. Councilors also set a date to do the City Manager’s annual review for June 19, 2012 in Executive Session. The next meeting of the Boardman City Council will be Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 7pm at Boardman City Hall.

Music in the Parks begins June 18 Grab your lawn chairs and head for Boardman or Irrigon Marina Parks each Monday evening beginning June 18th for another season of free, wonderful entertainment! The Music in the Parks committee has gathered 10 groups of entertainers that are sure to please everyone. The season begins June 18th at Boardman Marina Park, Harold Baker Pavilion. The ever popular Tony Madrigal will entertain at the Boardman Marina Park opener, June 18th. Madrigal has been entertaining in the Boardman/Irrigon area for years and always draws a crowd with his renditions of the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s music. Here’s a chance to hear those great Ricky Nelson, Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley songs in the beautiful setting on the edge of the Columbia River. The following Monday evening, June 25th, take your lawn chairs to Irrigon Marina Park and listen to the Irrigon Jazz Band. The band is made up of 15 members of the Irrigon High School Pep Band. Their music is mostly classic rock. The students are working hard to show the community the potential of the music program at Irrigon High School. Joining the band is vocalist Kelsie Stewart singing the
National Anthem. They are also showcasing “Rock and the Young Bloods”, a new band that is being formed in Irrigon. Local talent, with a professionalism that will wow their audience. The 2012 Music in the Parks series of ten concerts is sponsored
by North Morrow Community Foundation, Irrigon Watermelon Festival and MP5; funding is provided by Morrow County Unified Recreation District and Portland General Electric. The Monday night concerts begin on June 18th and run to August 20th.

Morrow County voters approve replacement levy LEXINGTON – Voters approved a replacement levy for the Morrow County School District during Tuesday’s (May 15) primary election, according to unofficial results from the Morrow County Elections Office. The approval will bring the District approximately $450,000 per year for the next five years with a tax rate of $1.00 per $1,000 assessed property value from tax payers. The levy replaced another levy that was approved by voters in 2009, which has allowed the District to maintain elective programs. “We’re very appreciative of the voters in Morrow County for turning out to show their continued support for our schools,” said Dirk Dirksen, superintendent of the Morrow County School District. Unofficial results indicate voters in Morrow County approved the levy replacement with 60 percent of the vote. With the levy’s approval, tax payers will continue to pay the same tax rate as with the previous levy. The District will continue to be able to fund elective programs with the replacement levy, including elementary music and physical education, art, VoAg, music, Spanish, business, technology and industrial arts.

stand that they really enjoyed the stop and most didn’t know all that Boardman has to offer, plus they were really excited about the SAGE Center. At the time of printing we were just hosting the first 8th Grade Career day at Riverside. Kathy Neal is heading up this project and I am sure the 8th graders will have a great time and learn a lot at this event. Watch for the July North Morrow Times for a recap of the event. Boardman Park District’s summer recreation program begins June 18 Free activities include mornings for ages 5-12 and Teen Program from 1-4 pm. Swim lessons are June 11-15 with Movies in the Park to begin June 22 and continue each Friday evening throughout the summer. The Teen Summer Recreation Program is scheduled for the same dates (6-18 to 7-18) 1-4 pm and will ensure plenty of free entertainment for those ages 12 to 17. Always enjoyed are the water safety classes utilizing the canoes, paddleboats, kayaks and of course the huge water trampoline! Bank of Eastern Oregon employees participate in national ‘teach children to save day‘ Heppner, OR (May 2012). As part of the American Bankers Association Education Foundation’s Teach Children to Save Program, this is the seventh year Bank of Eastern Oregon teamed with local schools and thousands of bankers across the country to teach the concept of saving, how interest makes money grow, how to budget, and how to determine needs and wants. Bank of Eastern Oregon’s employees visited 23 elementary schools in its local banking communities and presented 1,100 students in grades kindergarten through fourth with a Mr. Bendy floppy calculator. “Studies show kids aren’t learning the skills they need to make smart financial decisions as adults,” said Jeff Bailey, president and CEO. “Communities and schools teach other life skills, such as driving a car, but we don’t spend enough time teaching financial skills. Bankers went to local schools to help prepare our future customers for financial success.” A significant number of schools were reached by the staff of Bank of Eastern Oregon in the eastern Oregon rural communities it serves. “We see our previously announced partnership with Everfi
Financial Literacy program to further enhance the financial education of the youth in our area,” added Bailey. Bank of Eastern Oregon offers the following tips to help parents make every day “Savings Day”: · Help kids open up their own bank savings account and make deposits regularly. BEO has children’s accounts with no fee or minimum-balance requirements. · Kids love to get mail so encourage them to keep an eye out for their quarterly statement. · Make going to the bank fun! Bring your child with you to the bank and help them deposit a dollar or more into their account. They’ll be amazed how quickly their savings can build and learn a great lesson for the future. · Talk to your child about the family budget. Include a discussion on wants and needs. Reinforce this by budgeting for a family outing or purchase. · While children know that money doesn’t grow on trees, they may think it comes out of a wall. Show them how an ATM machine works and explain that to take money out of the bank you must first put it in. · Give your kids positive feed-
back. As they get older, give them responsibility over how they spend their money. Good Shepherd Medical Center has opened a pharmacy inside Boardman Select Market. After extensive remodeling inside the store, the pharmacy was ready to open their doors on May 15th. Pharmacist Henry Zitterkob will be one of the two friendly faces to greet customers, Pharmacy Technician Brenna Heyne is the other. Zitterkob comes to the pharmacy well qualified, after spending 10 years at Rite Aid pharmacy, plus two years each at BiMart and WalMart pharmacies. Although he lives in Umatilla, a short drive brings Zitterkob to Boardman each workday, Monday through Friday for his hours of operation 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. The pharmacy is closed on Saturday and Sunday. Transferring your prescriptions is easy, Zitterkob says. “Just give us a call, we’ll take your information and take care of everything,” he added. Riverside, Heppner high schools named BEO chili cook-off raises funds for Relay for Life U.S. News Best High Schools LEXINGTON – For the third year in a row, both Riverside and Heppner high schools in the Morrow County School District were named to the U.S. News & World Report’s Best High Schools list for 2012. Heppner High School received a Silver medal ranking for 20a12, and was ranked as the 24th best high school in Oregon. In 2010 and 2011, Heppner High was awarded a Bronze medal ranking. Riverside High School received a Bronze medal ranking for 2012, as it also did in 2010 and 2011. There are 335 high schools in Oregon, and 76 of those were ranked among the U.S. News & World Report’s Best High Schools for 2012. Each year, U.S. News & World Report evaluates nearly
22,000 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia. Schools are awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze medals based on state proficiency standards, how
well they prepare students for college, and other factors. The state rankings methodology is based on whether a high school is nationally ranked gold or silver. All high schools nationally ranked gold and silver are numerically ranked in their state based on

BMCC Summer Term begins June 25 Spring Term is drawing to a close at Blue Mountain Community College with final exams scheduled for the week of June 11-14. Summer Term will begin June 25 and registration is currently open not only for Summer Term but Fall Term as well. Continuing students know the drill: Talk with an academic advisor, get approved to register and then register as soon as possible for best class selection. Students new to the process may have a couple extra steps including scheduling and taking the Compass placement test for proper placement into math and writing classes. The placement test is available at BMCC Boardman for a $10 fee. Call the office at 541-4812099 to make an appointment. Once the placement test is complete, student may talk with an advisor at BMCC Boardman and receive assistance registering if they wish. BMCC Boardman will be open regular hours through the end of finals week. Those hours are Mondays and Wednesdays, 1-7:30 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:30-7:30
pm. After that, scaled back hours of Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-5:30 will be observed through the end of June. BMCC Boardman will be open during summer term on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 67:30 pm for test proctoring and other student assistance. BMCC students need to be aware of a major policy change eliminating “late adds.” Starting with Summer Term, students will not be allowed to add classes after midnight of the Sunday preceding the start of the term. Strength Training Class offered in Irrigon A summer session of Marv Landon’s Strength Training will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6-7 pm at Irrigon Jr/ Sr High School. Calling all Morrow County cultural, arts, historic and literary organizations! Fiscal Year 2012-2013 begins July 1. It is time for your qualifying organization to start preparing a Funding Proposal Request Form for the Morrowa County Cultural Coalition. Proposals selected for 2012 funding now have more time to complete their projects than previously. Morrow County literary, historical preservation, visual and performing arts, humanities and cultural organizations are invited to submit Completed Funding Proposal Request Forms to Morrow County Cultural Coalition by August 1, 2012. Proposed projects must include a timeline and be completed by June 1, 2013.
Organizations need not have IRS tax-exempt status to apply. Project proposals must meet criteria noted on the Morrow County application. Funding awarded will vary in amount according to the needs of the proposed project and the amount of county funds awarded by the Oregon Cultural Trust. Grants are awarded for no more than 50% of the total project cost. Proposals funded in 2011 included: North Morrow Community Foundation, Boardman Quilt Group, In the Company of Cowgirls Western Art Show, Windy River Elementary school, Columbia River Commu-
nity Health Services Art Committee, Heppner Elementary School, Morrow County Ford Leadership Program and BPRD Recreation. nother cool spring has delayed the emergence of Puncturevine, Tribulus terrestris L. or Goathead. Puncturevine is not a noxious weed according to Morrow County Weed Ordinance, but it is obnoxious. Seedlings have sprouted and as soon as we have sunshine again, they will flower and go to seed. Now is the time to get out your shovel or back pack sprayer and eliminate these invaders just waiting to unleash their wrath of pain and misery on you or your pet. If you’ve ever stepped on a goathead that was tracked in on your carpet, you know what I mean. Diligence and persistence are the name of this game. When digging goathead plants, take care not to shake any seeds loose and dispose of the plant in the trash or burn barrel. You should go back to the area in a couple of weeks to check for new sprouts and especially after a rain. Each goathead burr separates into five separate segments; each segment has two to four seeds inside and can typically remain viable for 3-7 years, patiently waiting for just the right conditions to sprout. According to a spokesperson from the Morrow County Weed Advisory Board, puncturevine can be found all over Morrow County because the burrs will hitchhike on your tires and randomly fall off and germinate. Be observant when parking your car, you could be in a puncturevine patch. ALLING ALL DREAMERS! Oregon Trail Library District launches summer reading program. Readers of all ages will explore the night this summer as the Oregon Trail Library District libraries in Boardman, Heppner and Irrigon present “Dream Big—READ!” during their summer reading programs. Activities may include programs on moon lore, dreams and wishes, nocturnal animals, and more. The 2012 Summer Reading Program is open to young people, toddler through young adult, with programs, prize drawing, story hours, and more.
