Bram Brata – Monday, July 28 – Boardman Marina Park Bram Bratá is our senior steel drum band. The name Bram Bratá is derived from two Trinidadian slang words meaning “an unexpected party.” Audiences find this a fitting name as they enjoy the challenging and varied repertoire of Caribbean, Soca, jazz, popular and even classical music. Spontaneous dancing is not uncommon.

Mr. Ben Leggett directs Bram Bratá and arranges or writes most of the music. The band practices twice a week and performs on the average about two times/month in the community and throughout the Northwest. Bram Bratá has performed in Hawaii, Disneyland, and at Caribbean Music Festivals in Oregon and British Columbia.

Steel drums are remarkably versatile instruments. Bram Bratá plays an eclectic mix of traditional Trinidadian steel drum music, Caribbean favorites, soca, jazz, classical and modern pop and rock tunes.

FIRE & SAFETY AWARD 2013 SUZANNE GRAY Suzanne Gray is the first smiling face you see when you stop Boardman’s Volunteer Fire Department. She answers the phone with cheer and professionalism. Likewise if you telephone the station, she is likely to be the first voice you hear.

As everyone knows, it takes a lot of people to run a volunteer organization and especially important is someone to take care of the many small details. Suzanne spearheaded Boardman’s Fire Corps organization back in 2007 and makes sure all members know that their role in Fire Corps is important, no matter how big or small.

She organized the door to door smoke detector campaign. When you or your child would come home with information on public safety, that was Suzanne with her Fire Public Education hat on. She is instrumental in making sure the fire department and fire corps is up to date and included in to participate in many community events such as, The Learning fair, Cinco de Mayo, National Night Out, the BBQ rib cook- off, 4th of July parade just to name a few.

BUSINESS PERSON JOE TAYLOR Joe Taylor of Double T Farming is a successful local farmer. But in addition he is an individual who gives himself to the community at both a civic and a personal level.

At the civic level Joe has served the community by being a commissioner for the Port of Morrow. He also serves as Treasurer for his local church, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. He is very active in Kiwanis and participates in many of the community projects and events, and chaired the Halloween Trick or Treat this last year.

Joe and his wife Cheryll have 2 teenage daughters and he is very active in their school events, 4 H and all of the other things young girls are involved in!

This last year he participated in the Morrow County Leadership Program with the Ford Foundation and is working with the group to build a new pavilion at Marker 40.

PIONEER AWARD KAREN PETTIGREW A little over 40 years ago Karen, her husband Virgil and their 2 children moved to Boardman. Neither the community nor the Pettigrews had any idea the commitment they would make to Boardman or the influence. They moved their business, J & D Electric and started a whirlwind of dedication to not only their employees but to everyone they touched.

Karen has been active in almost everything that happens in Boardman. She is currently serving as the City Manager; she is on the board of the Columbia River Community Health Services, served on the Chamber Board of Directors for many, many years, volunteering her time to keep the books, handle payroll and all the tax preparation. She volunteers her time as treasurer for the Boardman

Community Development Association and has been a tireless volunteer, supporter and promoter of the North Morrow Community Foundation. Karen is currently serving as President of the Boardman Park District and has been on their board for many years.

This last year she joined Kiwanis and has helped on numerous projects.

Each year Karen helps with the Christmas baskets for those less fortunate, and makes anonymous donations of her time and funds to many causes in the community she is proud to call home. Karen’s continues each year her unending support of the school system, in particular Riverside Jr./Sr. High School.

Karen is a huge asset to our community and many just know her as “Mrs. Boardman”. She is the best community ambassador that we could ever hope to find.

Bank of Eastern Oregon awards $11,500 in scholarships Bank of Eastern Oregon awarded twenty-three $500 scholarships to graduating seniors through its Agricultural/Business Scholarship Program. This is the 22nd year the bank offered this program, giving away over $117,500 to date. One of these scholarships went to Riverside High School senior, Sarah Bose.

Sarah was active in tennis, drama, and outdoor club. She was a member of National Honor Society, school government, and the Key Club, where she provided many hours of community service. Sarah has been accepted at Pacific University Oregon and will pursue a degree in Business Administration.

Boardman Buzzzzzzzz Hello Boardman.

It’s time for the annual Boardman Thunder once again! The committee has been working hard to make sure you will have a great time at our celebration! They have Diane Wolfe, some new fresh CEO ideas that we are trying out this year, so we hope you will enjoy

the festivities. I’m hoping for a beautiful summer day without much wind and not too hot! Is that too much to ask for?

We are so excited that Boardman will have a produce stand for our residents and visitors to purchase products at our new stand.

It is the red container on North East 3rd Street (beside the soccer fields on Front Street) Watch for more information coming soon.

Hopefully the stand will open the first week of July. Thank you Art Kegler, Kathy Neal and Jim Young for all your work to get this

accomplished. It should be up and running the first part of July.

In July I will be taking a bit of vacation time, I am going to go spend some time with my parents. So I am really looking forward to seeing them. We will be driving back to Kansas to visit family so I will get to see Aunts and Uncles and cousins. It will be a lot of driving but should be a lot of fun.

We are working on some fun new events for Boardman this fall. We will have the first Harvest Festival in October, The SAGE Center and Boardman Chamber are working with

the Irrigon and Heppner Chambers to make this a great event for Morrow County. We are also planning a Casino Night in October.

Many of you were asking us to bring it back so we did. We are keeping it a separate event from the banquet. Watch for lots more details coming soon on both of these new events.

Oh the fun we are going to have at the Boardman 4th of July Celebration! From 1 pm to 3 pm at the Boardman Marina Park we are going to have some new and exciting contests and games for kids and adults.

Ages 6 and under have the opportunity to win some fun prizes with games such as football toss, balloon dart throw, ducks in the pond, cupcake walk. They can also bounce in the bouncy castle, make a fun craft or play on the water slide. Those ages 7 - 12 can grab a partner and try the balloon toss, or see how they can do individually with the sack race, hula hoop or jump rope.

Tickets for these games are 2 for a $1.00.

For everyone 13 to 93, you can find a team mate and try the water balloon toss, pie eating contest (we will tell you it includes whipped cream and bubble gum!), a sack race or see if you can still twirl a hula hoop.

Entry fee is $2.00 per person and the winner wins the pot. Grab several family members or friends and see if you can win the tug of war- entry is fee is $1.00 per person with the winning team winning the pot.

Monthly Chamber Membership Lunch Mark your calendar for the July chamber luncheon on July 16th at noon. This month, we will be having a picnic lunch at the Boardman Marina Park in the Harold Baker Pavilion. Our speaker will be Meredith Lair with Northeast Oregon Area Health Education Center. NOAHEC serves 11 counties in Eastern Oregon and for more than 20 years have been providing health and science educational programs for students in our region.

Meredith will be sharing information on a ‘Saturday Science Camp’ NOAHEC will be bringing to our area.

The Boardman Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a horseshoe tournament during the Boardman Thunder 4th of July Celebration on Thursday, July 4. The entry fee is $5 per person with the 1st and 2nd place winners receiving a 50% pay-back. The more entries we get the more you will have a chance at winning! This fun event has been going on for many years and we are looking forward to a great turn out this year. Debbie Radie with Boardman Foods is running the horseshoe tournament and it will start at 1:00 pm at the Boardman Marina Park. Registration will begin just prior to the tournament.

Attention local runners and walkers: the time to register for the annual Boardman Thunder Fun Run 5K and 10K run/walk is NOW! Organized by the Boardman Chamber, this 10K Run or 5K run/walk offers a challenge to even the most experienced runner as participants’ race along the shores of the Columbia River and through dense growth areas on groomed paths. Walkers also will find the course enjoyable and a good workout.

Registration will begin at 7am and the race will begin promptly at 8am on Friday July 4th at the former Boardman Chamber offices located at 206 N. Main Street. Pre-registration fee is $7 per runner or $17 including a commemorative t-shirt. Day-of registration is $10 or $20 with t-shirt.

In the past we’ve had over 70 participants and many find this run an enjoyable and festive way to kick-off a day full of celebrating! For more information or a registration form, contact the Boardman Chamber at 541481-3014.

City of Boardman places bounty on noxious weed

Once again the City of Boardman will be placing a bounty on noxious weeds. Up to $300 will be spent on a program aimed at controlling Puncturevine within the City. The City has run the program for the last five years and has been a huge success with citizens collecting thousands of pounds of the Puncturevine.

If you have ever stepped on a Puncturevine seed, you know what a pain the plant can be. Each spiny bur or seed pod from the Puncturevine (Tribulus terrestris), also known as a “Goathead”, contains 20 seeds equipped with long sharp spines capable of puncturing a bike tire or a shoe. It takes only 3 weeks for this weed to sprout and make seeds. To make things worse, the seeds are some of the hardiest in nature; they may lay in the ground dormant for up to 20 years until just the right conditions come along for them to grow.

Any established

Puncturevine will continue to grow and spread until frost comes along - unless you stop it.

The City plans to enlist the aid of its citizens to control the spread of Puncturevine by offering to pay for collection of the weed from July 7 th to August 15 th .

The Puncturevine and their seed pods need to be collected in bags provided by the City and returned to City Hall to receive the $1 per bag in bounty, or until the entire $300 has been paid out.

The City’s Code Compliance Official, Martin Martinez, said “this is a great opportunity for local youth to raise money for their organizations and to do something good for their community”. Areas of the most concern are the City’s bike/pedestrian paths, and residential areas. Bags can be picked up at Boardman City Hall from 8am to 5pm beginning July 7th . Riverside students compete in pilot robot program to build skills During the course of our three week summer school program Riverside students were able to participate in a pilot robotics program.

Students worked together in three groups to build their own robot using the VEX IQ robotics platform. Each group was responsible for planning and putting together their own robot that could move in

all directions as well as grasp and lift small objects.

Robotics help students develop valuable skills such as communication, problem solving, and math application skills in addition to learning more about engineering and automation. In the three short weeks we were able to see students make great gains in communication,

teamwork, and self-confidence.

As a culminating project each group maneuvered their robot through a race track that included having to pick up and move an object in a timed race. This introductory program was an exciting first step for us at Riverside as we are planning to introduce robotics programs for both our junior high and high school students this fall.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Halloween may be months away but if you are hoping to grow monster pumpkins, now is the time to start planting.

The world record monster pumpkin of 2013 weighed in at 2,032 pounds, according to the New York Botanical Garden.

Maybe you won’t achieve quite that size of a pumpkin, but choose the variety ‘Dill’s Atlantic Giant’ and you, too, can grow the great pumpkin of Charlie Brown’s dreams, said Jim Myers, a vegetable breeder for Oregon State University.

“I’ve had these types growing in fields and without doing anything special to them I’ve gotten 400-pounders,” Myers said. “They certainly need plenty of water and lots of space to grow. People who grow them competitively have their own secret formulas that they don’t talk about and use different strategies. It’s a very small group that does it competitively and they’re very fanatical about it.”

Myers offered the following advice for growing your own monster pumpkin: · Buy seeds from someone you know who has grown a record-setting pumpkin if you want to do it competitively. Note that the seed may be pricey. · Germinate monster pumpkin seeds at air temperatures of 65 to 75 degrees and soil temperatures of 70 to 90 degrees. · Grow pumpkins indoors from seed and move the starts to your garden about five to seven weeks later. Plant in late May after the last frost. · Place plastic around the base of the pumpkin to warm the soil and give the vines room to grow away from the plastic. That’s because the vines will develop their own sepa-

rate roots as they spread and the plastic prevents the vines from growing roots into the soil around the pumpkin. · Provide your pumpkin plenty of room to spread – a single plant may use as much as,200 square feet, or roughly a 40-foot diameter circle. · Remove enough flowers and fruit – pumpkins are actually fruits – to force the plant to put all its energy into producing one behemoth fruit instead of lots of smaller fruits. · Hand-pollinate pumpkins to increase the number of seeds that develop and the likelihood for bigger fruits. Pull off the petals of male flowers, which look like straight stalks, and dab these on the female flowers, which have little round ball-shaped ovaries at their base. · Give pumpkins 130 days or more to mature. Because of this, they are best suited to western Oregon. · Harvest your pumpkin at the end of the season just before the first frost. It won’t color to the bright orange of a jack-o’-lantern type, but it will appear pale yellow to orange-ish red when it is ready. · To qualify as a pumpkin and not a squash, the surface area must be shaded red, pink or yellow, rather than blue, gray or green. · At harvest time, be careful that the pumpkin does not develop cracks, which will count against you in competitions.

After you’ve entered your pumpkin in weigh-off competitions, you could sell it or roast the seeds, Myers said.

“It’s something that’s interesting to do. There’s not a lot of practicality. There might be a little prize money and it’s good for notoriety,” Myers said.

GEODC schedules 2nd round of CEDS community outreach meetings Greater Eastern Oregon Development Corporation (GEODC) continues its economic development planning process with a second series of local community outreach meetings.

The Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) is intended to be a grass-roots level planning effort that brings together citizens and business, government,

As part of the planning process, regional projects will be reviewed against developed criteria and prioritized to best position these projects for state and federal funding opportu-

Boardman rezones property, changes political sign ordinance During their June 3rd council meeting, Boardman City Councilors passed two ordinances, one which rezones commercial property and another pertaining to political signs in the city.

Ordinance No. 2-2014 rezones 2.85 acres of property from Commercial to Multi-Family Subdistrict Residential. The property is the western portion of a 5.15 parcel of property located on S. Main Street between Willowfork Drive and Wilson Lane. The owner’s of the property originally applied to rezone the entire parcel to Multi-Family Subdistrict Residential, but it was the recommendation of the Boardman Planning Commission to rezone

only 2.85 acres. Councilor’s voted five to zero to approve the zone change.

Ordinance No. 3-2014 changes the City Development Code to allow up to 4’ x 8’, or 32 square feet political signs to be placed in all areas in Boardman with a ten foot setback from the sidewalks and streets. The language change is a result of local candidate Don Russell asking for clarification on the city’s current code pertaining to political signs. Councilors voted five to zero to approve the language changes in the City’s Development Code.

ors approved drafting a contract with the owner of Frontier Trailer Court, David Jones, who also serves as a Boardman City Councilor, allowing him to make payments to the city for System Development Charges for the expansion of his trailer park located on South Main Street. The contract will be for the amount of $18,908.00 to be paid over two years. Councilors voted four to zero to approve the contract. Councilor David Jones abstained from the vote.

The next meeting of the Boardman City Council will be Tuesday, June 17th at 6:30pm at Boardman City Hall.

PENDLETON, Ore. – Blue Mountain Community College is now accepting registrations for a new Unmanned Aeraial Vehicle (UAV) Systems course to teach those interested in learning how to operate UAVs in numerous occupational fields in the region.

The brand new course will provide a basic understanding and application of UAV/Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) design, configuration and operation. By the course’s conclusion, students will demonstrate operational competency in using micros and full-scale UAVs. The Eastern Oregon Regional Airport in Pendleton is expected to

receive approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to become a test site for UAVs this summer.

Pendleton, Tillamook and Warm Springs were all given approval by the FAA at the start of 2014 as part of the Pan-Pacific UAS Test Range Complex. UAVs are expected to have a use in several operational fields in eastern Oregon, including agriculture, land surveying, real estate, emergency management, land management, air quality surveying and wildlife management.

“Our hope is that by creating a career technical training opportunity in UAV Systems, we can help provide a skilled workforce in this

new and up-and-coming industry in our region,” said President Preus.

“BMCC is constantly seeking ways to fulfill workforce needs in eastern Oregon, and this is an exciting opportunity to prepare people for a new field that will be looking for qualified workers.”

Family Fishing Events offer a host of fishing opportunities at stocked ponds throughout the state. On-site ODFW staff and volunteers provide equipment, teach youth how to bait and cast, and help kids “reel in” their catch.

Adults can get tips on basic rigging, fish identification and casting. The program provides a unique opportunity for families to learn how to fish together and discover just how much fun it can be! Licenses are required for anyone 14 years and older, and are not available at the events.

The Boardman Park & Recreation District is sponsoring their summer recreation program again, Monday through Thursday, from June 16 through July 17th. The Funtastic Kidz morning program from 8:30 - 11:30 am is for kids ages 5 - 12 and includes lots of fun activities. At press time, there are 130 kids signed up. The Teen Program, from 1:00 - 4:00, includes plenty of water activities and culminates in a trip to Silverwood for those who qualify. Does your child have a HERSHEY FRIEND? Is there a friend that your child knows who is not attending FUNtastic Kidz right now?? If so, then invite them to come join the FUN and your child will receive a HERSHEY candy bar for each NEW HERSHEY FRIEND that they bring.

WATER DAYS!!!

REMINDER: Every Thursday of FUNtastic Kidz are water days. Please send your child ready to get wet; however, if the weather is cold then we will change the program schedule to continue a full day of FUN but if the weather is good then we’ll have a SPLASH-TASTIC time!
