Sisbro Studios to present family programs at Hermiston, Boardman and Heppner Libraries An award-winning author/filmmaker/entertainer team from the internationally-acclaimed Sisbro Studios will make special appearances at the Hermiston, Boardman and Heppner libraries in July. The presentations are sponsored collaboratively by the Oregon Trail Library District, Hermiston Public Library and Libraries of Eastern Oregon (LEO). Area residents of all ages are invited to come and enjoy a lively Sisbro performance of music, comedy and fun on Tues., July 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hermiston Public Library, 235 E. Gladys Ave., and on Wed., July 11 at 2 p.m. at the Heppner Public Library, 444 N. Main St., and again that evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman Public Library, 200 S. Main St. Sisbro is the creative sister and brother team of Laura Sams and Robert Sams, whose dream was to create high-quality films, books, educational media and curriculum that help people discover the natural world. Laura and Rob noticed a need for better family and children’s programming, so they set out to cre-
ate stories that “are so clever, funny, beautiful and catchy that people can’t help but share them again and again”, according to their
website www.sisbro.com. Their work has been honored with over 50 international awards, including a Wildscreen Panda Award (which is often called the “Green Oscars”), a KIDS FIRST! Best of the Year Award, a National Parenting Publications (NAPPA) Gold Award, a Special Jury Award at the International Wildlife Film Festival and many more. Among their best-selling books and videos for children are the “In the Woods” series and the “Riddle Solvers” series. Rob and Laura have performed

Boardman adopts 2012-2013 city and URA budgets During their June 5th meetings, the Boardman City Council adopted the 2012-2013 City budget of $9,874,395 and the Urban Renewal Agency adopted their 20122013 budget of $545,000. City property taxes will be levied at a rate of $4.2114 per $1000 of assessed valuation and $471,000 will be levied for bonded indebtedness not subject to Measure 5 or Measure 50 limitations. City Finance Director, Thomas Kligel said the projected year-end position for the City looks to be very promising. Cash carryover is projected to be up over the previous year. He said the 2012-2013 budget will be able to meet the challenges of the new fiscal year. This strong financial base for the upcoming year will also allow the City to preserve additional reserve funds for future year expenditures. Mr. Kligel said this budget is a nofrills budget which establishes more contingency funds and creates some reserve funds to provide the City more ability to respond to the difficult challenges ahead. In other City business, Brenda Profitt was sworn as a City Councilor, filling a vacancy for a term ending December 31, 2014. Councilors passed a resolution declaring one of its used police cars as surplus. Also, Mayor Phillips presented Justyce Smith with a Certificate of Achievement for winning the 2012 Oregon OSAA Girls Class 3A 200 Meter Sprint Championship. The next meeting of the Boardman City Council will be Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at 7:00pm.

Seven tips to help your landscape beat the heat this summer by gardening expert, TV/radio host, author & columnist Melinda Myers
Summer has arrived and for many gardeners that means heat, drought and watering bans. This can be hard on gardeners as well as their landscapes. The good news is that there are ways to help plants thrive despite these seasonal challenges. Adjusting landscape care accordingly during the summer months can not only provide relief for lawns and gardens, but also for the gardener. Here are some low maintenance eco-friendly ways gardeners can keep their landscapes looking their best throughout the summer months, while beating the heat: Water plants thoroughly to promote deep drought- and pestresistant roots. Wait until the top few inches of soil are crumbly and moist or footprints remain in the lawn before watering again. Avoid light, frequent watering that encourages shallow roots. Shallow roots are less able to tolerate drought and more susceptible to disease and insect problems. Spread a 2- to 3-inch layer of shredded leaves, evergreen needles or shredded bark mulch over the soil in garden beds and around trees and shrubs. Mulching conserves
moisture, keeps roots cool and moist, and suppresses weeds. Mow lawns high. Taller grass produces deeper roots that are more drought-tolerant. A deeply rooted lawn is also more resistant to insects, disease and other environmental stresses. Always mow lawns often enough, so you remove less than one third the total leaf surface. Leave the grass clippings on the lawn. They add nitrogen, organic matter and moisture to the soil. Use a low nitrogen slow release fertilizer, like Milorganite, to give gardens and lawns a nutrient boost. This organic nitrogen fertilizer remains in the soil until the growing conditions are right for the plant. Remove weeds from garden beds and borders as soon as they appear. These “plants out of place” steal water and nutrients from your desirable garden plants. Plus, they can harbor insects and diseases that are harmful to your garden plants. And don’t forget to take care of yourself while caring for your landscape during the heat of summer. Drink lots of liquid, use sunscreen, and work during the cooler morning and evening hours.

But the Diane Wolfe, CEO plans are coming along nicely and I have in the weather request, not too hot, not too windy, of course no rain - just
perfect weather! The Kiwanis Club of Boardman held their 10th Annual Wine tour on June 23. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and I know I certainly did. It is so much fun to see all the wineries you wouldn’t normally drive to and you get to spend the days with old friends and I always meet some new people on the tour. I am really excited for the Chamber to become much more involved in Economic Development for our great community. The Port does so much so it is time for us to join
with them and help recruit some service and retail businesses to Boardman. I will be attending a conference in Sacramento in August and I hope to bring home to great ideas and really get the community involved in helping us bring in the businesses we want. Thunder Over the River FIREWORKS Thanks to the funding from Morrow County Unified Recreation District the Chamber is able to put on the Boardman Thunder, Fireworks over the Columbia River. The fireworks will begin at dusk. Horseshoe Tournament The entry fee is $5 per person with the 1st and 2nd place winners receiving ribbons and a 50% pay-back for the Horseshoe Tourney. Boardman Chamber awards 6 RHS grads $750 each At the June 2nd graduation at Riverside High School, the Boardman Chamber of Commerce awarded six graduates with scholarships of $750 each. The recipients were recognized for their community service, school activities and academic achievement. Listed below are the scholarship recipients with a brief overview of their future plans. Mayra Prado Reyes With a strong desire to serve her community and the compassion to help others Mayra plans to attend the OSU and get a bachelor’s degree in Public Health, then go on to get a master’s degree in Nursing . After finishing her education Mayra plans to become an ER Nurse, then join the Peace Corps. While at RHS Mayra was very active in Pepband, Honor Society, MEChA, and Key Club where she served as Lieutenant Governor of Division 80. Mayra’s community service involved raising money for Relay for Life, Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, Breast Cancer, Haiti earthquake, and blood drives.
Taylor Wightman Will be attending college this fall-Taylor applied and was accepted into the Dual Enrollment Partnership program with Oregon State University and Portland Community College. He will be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Information Technology and Engineering/Computer Science. While at RHS, Taylor served in student government as vice-pres 9-11 grades then as President this year. He also was in Honor Society, a four-letter athlete participating in football, basketball, baseball and track. Taylor completed several hundred hours of community service, participating in Youth Advisory Council and their events, Boardman Community 4-H President & Ambassador-canned food drive. Ky-Leigh Nelson This fall KyLeigh plans to attend University of Oregon. Her declared major is in Teacher Education, with a minor in English. Activities and clubs she is involved with are Volleyball, National Honor Society, Key Club, Drama and Business Professionals
of American (2008-10 Moore, MT). Ky-Leigh has volunteered for high school Blood Drive, Senior Breakfast and as RHS Baseball scorekeeper. She has received awards for Excellence in Language Arts, Advanced Biology, Trigonometry and U.S. History. Mykel Keefer, (Evan) Upon finishing his High School education Mykel plans on attending either Clackamas Community College or Mt. Hood Community College to concentrate on general studies. After two years he will transfer to a four year college where he will pursue a degree and his dream of becoming a Physical Therapist. Meykel holds community service at a high level, while in school he helped with track and field events for younger kids, Babe Ruth and Major/Minor Baseball Teams. Outside of school he was involved with Youth Advisory Council and 4-H projects-canned food and coat drives and community clean-up. Meykel participated in Baseball, Basketball and was a member of the State Champion Soccer Team.
Nereida Navarro Helping those in her community has always been a high priority with Nereida. Inspired by a family member who is a Mid-wife, Nereida plans to follow her dream and become a Nurse. She recently applied to and was accepted at Eastern Oregon University. After graduation she will continue her education at EOU in Nursing and a future career as a nurse. Nereida has volunteered her time as a counselor at Camp Meadowood and at the Boardman Senior Center for their 1st Saturday Breakfast. While at RHS she was involved in National Society of High School Scholars, Honor Choir, Music in May and Pep Band. She participated in Key Club community events, MEChA—Talent Show at Cinco de Mayo Celebration, and
helped with translating at the elementary schools. Sean Shimer While attending Riverside Jr/Sr High School and Nyssa Schools, Sean has been extending his education through the Expanded Options Program at Treasure Valley Community College, Tillamook Bay Community College and Blue Mountain Community College. After graduating from RHS as the 2012 class Salutatorian, he will continue his education at the University level and attend Oregon State University to get a degree in Nuclear Engineering. Most of Sean’s community and school activities took place while attending his first 3 years at Nyssa High School. Heppner junior wins Miss Oregon High School Rodeo Assoc. queen Lillian Sandford, a junior at Heppner High School has earned the title of Miss Oregon High School Rodeo Association Queen last weekend at the Oregon High School Rodeo Finals that were held in Prineville. She competed in appearance, speech, modeling, interviews, horsemanship and a written test on the National High School Rodeo knowledge. Sandford, has earned a position on the Oregon high school rodeo team and will be traveling with her teammates to Rock Springs, Wyoming from July 13th - 21st to compete at the 64th annual National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR) in the Queen competition. At the NHSFR there will be State and Provincial Queens representing their high schools as well as Australia. This will be a great opportunity for meeting new people, making lifelong friends while competing in a week long pageant that has the young ladies busy from dawn to
dusk each and every day. Sandford is fund raising for her outfits and travel back to Wyoming and asks that if your business would like to contribute to her reign, to contact her at 541571-5930. Make plans for Morrow County Fair The theme for this year’s Morrow County Fair is “Country Pride...County Wide at the Morrow County Fair” with dates being August 15-18, 2012 Clean up day for 4-H and FFA kids is the 4th of August at 8:00 am. Open Class livestock must be pre-registered by August 2nd in order to reserve a spot. Other entries will be taken fair week, Monday, August 13th 1-8 pm. Flowers, fruits and vegetables are taken on Monday, August 13th 5-8 pm and Tuesday, August 14th 8-10 am. This year to go with the theme they are honoring the active military personnel, and they would like to put out word for a 8X10 to display during fair, also an address for people to write to them would be great. RHS 2012 Scholarship recipients
BEO lenders, Russell Seewald, Mike Short, Ed Rollins, and Joe Perry, friends of agriculture, and the OSU Extension Service, graciously barbequed steak for the Morrow County Wheat Grower’s annual social dinner held at Eric & Brandi Orem’s farm, NE Lexington, on Friday June 15, 2012. BEO awards $10,000 in scholarships Bank of Eastern Oregon awarded twenty $500 scholarships to graduating seniors through its Agricultural/Business Scholarship Program. This is the 20th year the bank offered this program, giving away over $96,000 to date. One of these scholarships went to Riverside High School senior, Taylor Wightman. Taylor was active in football, basketball, and track. As a member of 4-H, he has earned awards in swine, photography, cooking, sewing, and public speaking. He was Student Body president and served as Vice President in grades nine thru 11. Taylor is also a member of National Honor Society and the City of Boardman Youth Advisory Council. Honors and awards he received include Perfect Attendance, Scholar Athlete, and Honor Roll. Community service found Taylor volunteering for the 4-H canned food drive, the RHS Booster Bash, the Kiwanis Halloween party, assisting with the Youth/ Jr. High track meet, coaching and refereeing for Little League, Memorial Day cemetery decorating, par-
ticipating in the American Red Cross blood drive, and being active on the Youth Advisory Council. Taylor plans on a dual enrollment partnership program with Oregon State University and Portland Community College to begin his studies in Business Information Technology/ Engineering. Insect programs for children and adults set at area Libraries Care to be bugged? Programs for children and adults will be offered by the Oregon Trail Library District for area residents interested in learning more about the fascinating world of insects. The programs will be presented by entomologists Dr. Silvia Rondon and Carol Mills from Oregon State University’s Agricultural Research and Extension Center. The programs will be held on Friday, July 6 at the Hepper library, 444 N. Main St., and Friday, July 13 at the Boardman library, 200 South Main Street. The children’s one-hour program will begin at 11 a.m. and is
targeted for preschool through elementary school ages and will cover these topics: what are insects, good insects and bad insects, how and where to collect them, and how to preserve insects. Children will hear a story from The Beautiful Beetle Bookand will enjoy hands-on activities including an insect puzzle and harvesting ants to place in a see-through colony. Samples of interesting insects will be displayed. A second one-hour program will begin at noon at each location, immediately following the children’s program. While this program is targeted to adults, children are wel-
come to attend with their parents. Insect basics, biology and the insect world will be covered in a 30minute power point presentation. Displays of insects from the laboratory and under microscopes will allow attendees to view main insect pests in the region as well as those that are beneficial. RHS wrestlers headed to tournament in Fargo, North Dakota will compete against Western states at the chance for tournament titles in both styles. Team OR won both events last year. After that, Conlon, along with another group of Pirates, will head to a training camp in Sweet Home, Oregon. Conlon will work along side other National tournament bound wrestlers and get four days of hard training in. Meanwhile, Rockwell has been invited to a prestigious camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Rockwell will be among 70 other wrestlers from around the entire country, training together at the Jr Olympic Training Camp for one week, along side the 2012 Olympic Wrestling Teams that will be heading out to London this summer. Rockwell will then be flying back to Oregon and meeting up with Conlon in Prineville at their final training camp. Coquille, June 20, 2012- The First Community Founders Scholarship was established to help support students, throughout the communities they serve to afford the cost of a college education. In other City business, the Council passed a budget resolution moving $18,000 from the Contingency fund to Capital Outlay for the new picnic shelter at the City Park and for camera upgrades at City Hall. Councilors postponed the City Manager’s Job Evaluation to the July 10th meeting, when all Councilors can be present. Don Russell of the Boardman Car Wash urged the Council to consider an ordinance regulating mobile vendors. Be especially wary about personal websites, recipe sites and cooking exchanges. They may not be based on research. The Extension Services in Oregon, Washington and Idaho have included USDA canning recommendations in their Pacific Northwest food preservation Publications. Most of these are available online. To access them go to http://extension.oregonstate.edu/fch. Publications are available on canning fruit, vegetables, tomatoes, salsa, meat and poultry, seafood and smoked fish as well as pickled The current version of the “Ball Blue Book Guide to Preserving” is also based on USDA recommendations. Because home canning recommendations have changed over the years, only up-todate editions should be used. The OSU Extension Food Safety/ Preservation HOTLINE will be available June 25th to October 12th at 1800-354-7319. The HOTLINE is staffed Monday through Friday, 9 AM – 4 PM, except Wednesdays when it is open 1 – 4 PM and is closed on holidays.
