Four members of the Riverside High School Varsity Cheer Squad recently attended the Varsity Spirit Spectacular hosted at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida November 30thDecember 5th. The event was open to the captains that attended Varsity Cheer summer camps.

Attendees participated in a performance through the Disney’s Magic Kingdom, included Riverside High School Cheer Captains Emily Sepulveda, Jennifer Rodriguez, Kirsten Taylor, and Tania Mendoza

We would like to thank the Boardman Community for their support in helping us form Christmas baskets this year. Our volunteers consisted of Columbia Youth Soccer Club players and Junior High Boys Basketball players. They are thankful for the opportunity to help those in need in our community and look forward to helping next year. With the communities donations we were able to help 26 families in need this holiday season. Without the community we could not have made this possible. All donations went to Boardman Parks and Rec and Banner Bank for their annual Christmas Baskets. Thank you all for your support and donations!

2016 was a very busy year and it seems that it just flew by. A large reason time passes so quickly is how busy and involved so many of our Boardman residents are in the community.

All of us have friends, relatives or co-workers that are involved in an organization, sports group, or church, but others may be unaware of how much time they dedicate. The same goes for our teachers and first responders who deliver countless hours of commitment to our town.

We cannot forget the pioneers that have helped build Boardman or the youth that are making a difference in our community right now.

Boardman Chamber of Commerce provides an opportunity to recognize some of these people at our annual community awards banquet. We encourage all of you to take a moment to complete the nomination form on this page for any category listed and return it to the Boardman Chamber of Commerce. ESD Children’s Rodeo receives donation

Swire Coca-Cola and Walmart of Pendleton recently donated $2,159 to the InterMountain ESD Children’s Rodeo. The rodeo is an annual event organized by the IMESD that provides childrean with special needs the opportunity to be cowboys and cowgirls inside the famous Round-Up Arena. The rodeo is held on the Thursday of Round-Up Week, and celebrated 32 years in 2016.

The IMESD thanks Swire Coca-Cola and Walmart for their generous support of this wonderful event for students in eastern Oregon!

Matching donors offer to aid Farm-City Pro Rodeo HERMISTON – Farm-City Pro Rodeo (FCPR) is pleased to announce that two anonymous donors have agreed to match charitable donations, to the Friends of the Fair and Rodeo, up to $200,000, to assist FCPR and Eastern Oregon Trade and Event Center in completing the lights and needed seating for the Farm-City Pro Rodeo arena.

This opportunity will allow FCPR to host the 2017 rodeo with a fully completed and lit arena.

Each dollar received will be matched by these very generous donors. The goal is to raise $400,000 to finish the lighting and seating.

The Friends of the Fair and Rodeo is a charitable entity formed to assist the Umatilla County Fair and FarmCity Pro Rodeo.

Nurse Practitioner Angie Hays joins Columbia River Community Health Services Columbia River Community Health Services of Boardman is proud to introduce Angie Hays, Nurse Practitioner, to the community. Angie joined the medical team at the Boardman clinic on December 1, 2016.

Angie Hays comes to Columbia River Community Health Services with 10 years’ experience as a Nurse Practitioner. She went to OHSU for her undergraduate degree and to Washington State University for her Masters in Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner.

Angie has had experience in urgent care, family practice, and women’s health. Prior to being a nurse practitioner, she has worked in the emergency room, intensive care unit and in surgery.

Angie hopes that her presence will open new doors and avenues for the residents of Boardman. She is eager and excited to be part of the Columbia River Community Health Services team.

Her hobbies include spending quality time with her family, boating, water skiing, motorcycle riding, hiking and sewing.

Nurse Practitioner Angie Hays joined Columbia River Community Health Services, and is welcoming new patients.

Life along the Columbia River 95 years ago LIFE ALONG THE COLUMBIA RIVER 95 YEARS AGO Notes of Historical and Genealogical Value.

Here are bits of local history from 1921: Housing, School, Community, Agricultural Production and Economic Development – Sound Familiar? Spelling and grammar are from the original articles.

November 4, 1921 OREGON NEWS – Late Pacific Coast cranberries are now appearing on the markets. Local berries are distinguished from their Atlantic cousin, the eastern cranberry, by the lighter color of the fruit. The lighter color berry gives the cooked product a much brighter red hue. No cranberry could produce a sauce or jelly of finer quality than those grown in our own state. The bulk of Pacific Coast cranberries are grown at the mouth of the Columbia River. Oregon and Washington growers have joined forces in a marketing campaign and formed the Pacific Cranberry Exchange.

Through the efforts of Senator Stanfield, the Navy has made a ruling to the effect that canned cranberries may be placed on the ration list of the Navy – a new outlet for Oregon Fruit!

LOCAL NEWS BOARDMAN’S NEW CHEESE FACTORY TO BE IN OPERATION NEXT WEEK – Boardman’s new industry, the making of Swiss

Cheese, is an assured fact, the first of the product being turned out on Monday and will be on the market in six weeks which is the time required for curing. It is expected that the building now under construction at the Nick Faller place just south of town will be completed then. A meeting has been called for all milk producers to thrash out details of price and transportation and so forth.

ELECTRIC LIGHTS FOR BOARDMAN – W. H. Morgan of the Boardman Garage company has secured from the city council a 25 year franchise for the operation of an electric light plant for Boardman. Mr. Morgan has ordered a $2500.00 outfit for present and will build so that the service may be increased as the town grows. Practically every building in town has signed for wiring, and it is expected that the plant will be in operation within 90 days.

FROM THE BOARDMAN HIGH SCHOOL UTELLEM – The Sewing Class is making woolen dresses for themselves instead of doll dresses as was announced last week. The Singer sewing machine agent came on Friday afternoon and gave the machine a thoro overhauling and adjustment. Edna Broyles & Dorothy Boardman are entertaining chicken pox this week so they will not be back to school until their guest departs.

November 11, 1921 OREGON NEWS – From THE OREGONIAN-”Sentiment in fa-

vor of the Wallula cut-off is growing, not withstanding vigorous opposition which has been waged

by Pendleton since the project was first proposed. The cut-off would be a road 26 miles in length from the town of Umatilla, on the Columbia River Highway, to Wallula, Wash.

LOCAL NEWS – DILLABAUGH RANCH SCENE OF HIGH JINKS MONDAY NIGHT – Mr. & Mrs. Chas. Wicklander being the host and hostess. All the guests were masked, mostly in the Ku Klux Klan garb, although others were represented. The evening was passed in playing games, Chas. Barnes winning both prizes – one for guessing the identity of the guests and the other for finding the most peanuts. After a delicious lunch the guests departed for home well repaid for their four mile ride.

TIRELESS FORDS - We have heard of various kinds of Fords, the latest is a “tireless one” but the occupants had to come back on the rim. This was the fate of four of the invited guests who missed the party Monday evening.

ANOTHER CAR LOAD OF COWS – Another carload of Holstein cows were distributed among the farmers at Boardman on Friday.

This now makes over 100 during the past month.

On this basis corn can be laid down at $25.00 per ton and barley at $31.00.

November 25, 1921 LOCAL NEWS –BIGGEST STORM IN YEARS – SHEEP AND CATTLE MEN SUFFER. Herder and 1800 Sheep Lost – Board closes School for Week – Roads Most All Open Now. The 16 inches of snow in Boardman in places seems to be the leading topic of the day. A heavy fall of snow started Saturday with a wind and a lowering thermometer. By nightfall an old fashioned blizzard was raging. Four trains were stalled, one a rotary snow plow, is still reported buried in the snow slide which is blocking traffic. Some of the trains are stationed at The Dalles, others at Bonneville. The storm coming so early caught everyone unaware.

One disastrous effect of the storm in this section falls upon the sheep and cattle men. Monday it was reported that one of Carty’s sheep herders with a band of 1800 sheep

had left Carty’s Saturday and has not been heard of since. A posse was organized and scouted the country. He was found Tuesday morning about nine miles south of Boardman, worn out but alive, almost famished and one foot badly frozen – may have to be amputated, but had his sheep with him, losing only one out of the band.

The storm also caught the dairymen of the Boardman section, who only recently purchased about 100 milk cows, and who had not yet had time to prepare sufficient shelter for them. Boardman was overrun Wednesday night with marooned tourists. Every bed in town was full and three men slept on the restaurant floor without bed or covering of any sort other than their coats.

PARTLOW’S BUTCHER SHOP – Our genial butcher, Ambrose Partlow, recently started a modest butcher shop. Its hooks and walls are filled with choicest cuts and birds. Mr. Partlow feels that his talents should not be submerged by rendered tallow and oxtail soup bones, so he has accepted the agency for three and one oil. It has been generally understood that this oil was for sewing machines only, but a short talk will soon convince you of its many uses. We wish Mr. Partlow success in his new venture.

City of Boardman Snow & Ice Control Program We all know how unpredictable the weather can be in our area. We have experienced winters (normally December, January and February) with no snow accumulation, to winters such as we’ve had in the past that deposited heavy snow accumulation.

With a population of over 3000 and 80 plus lane-miles of streets, the City is continually striving to provide an acceptable level of snow and ice control.

NORMAL SNOW CONDITIONS Our fleet of snow fighting equipment is readied before the ice and snow seasons each year. One, five-yard dump truck with sanding box and plow, 2.5 ton dump truck with sanding box and plow, combined with a crew of trained equipment operators, will keep major streets passable.

The City has established procedures and policies for addressing snow plowing and sanding of the streets. The procedures and policies are set on a priority basis, which set predetermined routes as follows: First Priority: All main streets and main intersections considered to be the highest priorities to keep open the main streets and roadway systems connecting the fire station, police station, emergency medical services, and schools.

Second Priority: Other streets and selected areas such as steep hills and other problem areas identified by the public works department and/or police department.

Third Priority: Residential Streets CITIZEN RESPONSIBILITIES Snow can be beautiful, but it also can create hazards. When residents fail to clear their sidewalks, the result can be a treacherous ice patch. We need your help in protecting pedestrians from possible injury.

Residents are responsible to maintain their sidewalks and driveways adjacent to their property.

Please pile snow on your yard, not in the street. If your sidewalk is icy, you may correct the hazard by applying a heavy coat of sand.

Handicapped, elderly or other individuals unable to clean snow from their sidewalks may choose to contact someone to do this job for them. The following may provide this service to you: RHS Wrestling Team – Coach Boor 481- 2525 COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT SNOW REMOVAL Q: Can’t the City remove the snow they put in my driveway and sidewalks?

A: Our primary duty is to open and keep open the main roadway system. Considering the large num-

ber of driveways and amount of sidewalks in the City, it is too costly and time consuming, and would require additional City staff and equipment to perform this service.

Q: Why not plow to the center?

A: Plowing snow and piling it to the center of a street causes a hazardous situation. Traffic flow is restricted by eliminating a portion of a lane and this practice can also create sight obstructions for low vehicles. The freeze-thaw cycle creates daily problems when the melting snow freezes on the road surface every evening.

Q: Can I park my car on the street?

A: Yes, on those streets where parking is normally allowed. However, having to maneuver a snowplow in and out between parked vehicles can not only be dangerous, but also nerve-wracking for our drivers and is not an efficient way to plow the snow. One must be aware that if a car is parked on the side of the street, we could plow your car in with a snow bank.

Q: Why are residential streets seldom plowed?

A: With over 80 lane miles of streets to maintain, with limited equipment and staff, it is usually not possible to plow all of the streets. We make every effort to get to the lower priority streets when conditions allow.

he Special Needs Parent Meeting is one Friday a month from 3 PM -5:00 PM. Being a parent of a special needs child with developmental and/or physical disabilities can be a challenge. The purpose of the Special Needs Parent Meeting is to allow parents a place where they can share joys, successes, and concerns. The group of parents work together to problem solve difficult situations, learn strategies that help them help their child and understand the disability better, and how the disability impacts their child’s life. The facilitators have a theme and an activity at each meeting. Mrs. Susan Rodgers, IMESD Autism Consultant, Virginia Garcia, SBE Department Secretary- Translator-Parent, and Charlene Baker-Riverside Jr. Sr. High School Life Skills teacher facilitate the group.

Tuesday night the Boardman City Council adopted an ordinance aimed at curbing chronic nuisance properties in Boardman. The ordinance defines a chronic nuisance property, as property on which three or more nuisance activities exist or have occurred during any 90-day period. Nuisance activities include a range of criminal conduct. Under the new ordinance, violations could ultimately result in abatement of the offenders and the nuisance property could be secured against unauthorized access for a varied period of time. The new ordinance becomes effective on January 6, 2017.

In other City business, the council approved a resolution adopting the Morrow County Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan. This is an update to the original plan adopted in 2006. Also, the council discussed waiving the city’s System Development Charges for another year. This program was started in 2010 as an incentive to build more homes in Boardman. The council will further this discussion at January’s meeting.

The next meeting of the Boardman City Council will be Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at Boardman City Hall Council and will begin at 6:30 pm.

For those who have suffered loss, and those who are still impacted by the death of friends and loved ones, the program GriefShare is a most effective tool to help assist folks enter into the recovery process.

GriefShare recovery will be starting another thirteen week session at 6 p.m., Thursday, January 19 at First Baptist Church of Boardman. There is no cost for any person attending Griefshare except the $16 purchase of each one’s personal workbook. For those repeating GriefShare, welcome back; just bring your workbook with you, enjoy the fellowship and refreshments. In case of a financial inability for a person in purchasing the GriefShare workbook, come anyway and we can work something out.

epartment of Human Service, Child Welfare Program will be holding Foundations classes for individuals wishing to become foster or adoptive providers for children in foster care. These classes are free and are required as part of our homestudy process.

January Foundations classes will be held at the Hermiston DHS office, 950 SE Columbia Drive, Hermiston, four Saturday’s a row. January 7, 14, 21 & 28th from 9-4.

Umatilla and Morrow counties need foster providers for children ages newborn to 18. Providers care for children for a few days to several years at times depending on the circumstances. We need foster providers with a variety of lifestyles to meet the variety of children in our care. Singles, working couples and retiree’s all have something to offer these young children.

Future Foundations classes will be held in March in Pendleton, June Hermiston, August Boardman and October Pendleton.

6th annual Kiwanis Breakfast with Santa was fun for all The annual “Breakfast with Santa” sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Boardman took place the second Saturday in December with squeals of delight for Santa at the Boardman Senior Center.

Breakfast with Santa started with a pancake breakfast, a snowman dressing craft for kids under 12, a horse drawn wagon ride, and an opportunity for young ones to whisper their special requests to Santa himself while having a commemorative photo taken.

However, kids weren’t the only ones to enjoy the event as many of the grownups put on their hats, antlers, and Christmas sweaters for the morning event. Each kid received a free treat bag with an apple, a tangerine, and lots of candy. The fruit was donated by Select Market.

Thanks to the Key Club, Riverside Junior/Senior High School and all community members who joined in the fun. Below is a list of volunteers that helped make this event happen: Brenda Profitt/Deanna Camp-COORDINATORS.
