Park hires Rec Director, takes on Youth Basketball Program Recreation in Boardman is going to look different. Boardman Park & Recreation District (BPRD) hired a recreation specialist on July 1st who has big plans for the future. Scott Green, Recreation Facility Director for BPRD will wear many hats. His duties include running sports programs for the community, special events and managing the Recreation Center when construction is completed. He is looking for funding opportunities for these new activities (and additions to the Recreation Center, too) along with grants and sponsors. Green has taken over the management of the Boardman Youth Basketball program, for kids third through 6th grades, boys and girls. If your student isn’t signed up yet....grab your phone! Practice begins January 4th and will be held at Sam Boardman and Windy River gymnasiums. The Boardman basketball is part of the Hermiston Youth Basketball League, which includes youth from Irrigon, Stanfield, Umatilla,
Boardman and Hermiston. The league will be in action six or seven weeks, and league play will be on Saturdays, beginning January 9th, in Hermiston. Green is still eager to sign up coaching staff; anyone who is interested can learn, so give him a call. This is a recreation league, so concentration will be on developing fundamental skills, good sportsmanship, fun, and everybody plays! “This is good, healthy competition and lots of fun,” says Green. When the Recreation Center is completed, Green looks forward to many special events that the community will enjoy, such as a “Daddy & Daughter Dance”, or an “Underwater Easter Egg Hunt” or a program to build a cardboard boat, and vie to see who can sail it the farthest in the swimming pool. To kick off Green’s ideas for special events, he is planning some day camps this summer. A 3-day Goonie Camp (you have seen the movie, right?) This day camp will be full of adventure,

solving puzzles and finding clues to the ‘long lost treasure’. Activities at the camp, which will be for ages 10-15 will include taking a bike ride and following clues, then practicing water safety in kayaks and canoes while you paddle on the river. Meanwhile, don’t get caught by the bad guys: Fratells, or you won’t get your share of the treasure! Another program Green has planned is a Sports Sampler. Again, this will be for kids ages 10-15, and will include learning the fundaments of sports such as basketball, football, street hockey, disc golf and others. Green also is overseeing the popular Funtastic Kidz Summer Recreation Program and Teen Summer Recreation Program. Final dates have not yet been set. One more special program Green is planning is “Family Star Gazing”. This will be open to all ages, will take place mid-summer. Families can bring a blanket to lie on and learn about the constellations and the mythology behind the names. You’ll use your own eyes, no telescopes for this event. Green grew up in Goldendale, WA, where his father was the Under Sheriff and his mother a Provisional Juvenile Officer. Scott, his two sisters and brother grew up playing lots of sports. After high school, he worked as a lifeguard and park aide for Washington State Parks at Maryhill State Park.
