Boardman Kiwanis Club’s Breakfast with Santa to be held Saturday December 13 The old-fashioned holiday event is Saturday December 13, 2014 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Boardman Senior Center, 100 Tatone Street. The cost is $3 per person.

Everyone can enjoy a pancake and sausage breakfast and photos with Santa and his elf. There’s no additional charge for the photos with Santa. Pictures are taken with a digital camera and will be sent tto email addresses or saved to a disk which can be taken home the same day. Also, parents can use their own camera or cell phones to snap photos of their children.

In addition to sharing their Christmas wish list with the jolly ol’ St. Nick and his elf, Children can participate in simple craft activities with students from the Riverside High School Key Club as volun-

teers on hand to help.

Brian and Karli Cook, owners of Equine Elegance in Irrigon, will rein in the fun as people climb aboard the horsedrawn wagons and take a ride down the roads of City Center and residential Boardman singing Christmas Carol favorites.

CRCHS celebrates 10 years of giving coats to Boardman needy This is the tenth year that Columbia River Community Health Services has been collecting, buying and giving away coats to the community. It all began in 2005 when the staff at the health clinic saw a need for coats in patients who arrived shivering at their appointments. The staff spread the

word, brought in some “gently used” coats, hung them on a rack in the waiting room with a sign that says “FREE”.

Since 2005, the staff has collected coats through word of mouth, and a small anonymous grant allowed the purchase of several dozen new coats to give away.

The coat drive / give away is

from October through March each year. They gave away 281 coats in 2013 and so far 63 in 2014. That is an average of 43 coats per month and at times the pickings are pretty slim.

This program is free to the public, but we are requesting that you bring a non-perishable food product that will be used to make food baskets for families in our community. These donations will be used during the program, so please be generous.

Those who are not able to attend the evening performance are invited to come for the final rehearsal on Thursday afternoon, beginning at 1:00pm. Just remember, it will be a rehearsal!

BEO’s debit card helps ASBs (The Summit, Morrow County School District news, Winter 2014) In September 2013, the Bank of Eastern Oregon kicked off a high school mascot debit card program in partnership with Morrow County School District to benefit its associate student bodies. As the District enters its second year of the program, high school ASBs in Heppner, Boardman, and Irrigon are seeing the benefits from the program, which contributes 5 cents from every debit card pur-

chase made to that school’s ASB fund. Annual renewal fees for the cards also go directly to the ASB. For 2014 to date, 49 Mustang cardholders have earned $930 for Heppner High’s ASB, while 35 Riverside Pirate cardholders earned $841 for their school. Seventeen Irrigon Knights have also earned $488. That totals more than $2,200 in benefits to these school ASBs just by having and using their schools’ mascots debit cards, and we still have two months to go in

the calendar year!

Nov.1st a rough week for raptors The week of November 3rd started with a Sharp-shinned Hawk and Great Horned Owl with nonrepairable wing fractures, an electrocuted Red-tailed Hawk, and a gunshot Cooper's Hawk with an elevated blood lead level from eating another bird that had been shot. The week ended with two head injuries - a Sharp-shinned Hawk from Ephrata and a Great Horned Owl from Cove.

Electrocution This poor hawk was probably injured two or three weeks before he was found. There was no viable tissue in either foot. Euthanasia was the only humane option.

Two kinds of lead poisoning A Cooper's Hawk was found at the Port of Morrow near Boardman, OR with a broken wing.

wing fracture was caused by an air rifle pellet. The x-ray also showed two shotgun pellets in the abdomen. Results of a blood lead test were 9.9 micrograms/dl. That is not a toxic amount of lead, but high enough to warrant chelation. In addition to the shattered ulna, there is also damage in the hawk's wrist.

Although we are hopeful, the prognosis for a releasable bird is guarded.

Head Injuries The prognosis for the Sharpshinned Hawk with a head injury seems much better. We will schedule an x-ray to make sure we didn't miss something during the physical exam. The Great Horned Owl has a partially collapsed eye. Time

No marijuana tax for Boardman During their November 4, 2014 council meeting, the Boardman City Council heard from the public regarding a proposed marijuana sales tax ordinance. Morrow County Sheriff Ken Matlack spoke against the tax, as did Morrow County Commissioner Leann Rea and Morrow County Planner Carla McClane, citing concerns about sending the wrong message that Boardman welcomes marijuana businesses.

Councilor Kegler said the city needed to have a tax in place in the event State Measure 91 passed, which would allow the use of marijuana in Oregon. He said marijuana businesses would be less likely to locate in Boardman if there were another community that did not have the tax. Councilors Marc Rogelstad and David Jones both said they would vote no on the tax, citing concerns about the timing of the ordinance, the legal ramifications, and the inability to deposit any revenues in the banks. The ordinance did not come to a vote after failing to get a second on the motion made by Councilor Art Kegler for the first reading of the ordinance.

Oregon Trail Library District adds early Literacy Stations™ The Oregon Trail Library District announces the acquisition of Early Literacy Stations™ (ELS) for Boardman, Heppner and Irrigon.

One computer was purchased for each location. This opportunity was made possible through a grant from the Union Pacific Foundation.

The Early Literacy Station is a comprehensive, turnkey educational solution loaded with over 70 educational software programs for kids ages 2–8. The Early Literacy Station™ offers children a safe, standalone computer not connected to the Internet that is ageappropriate, engaging, and academically relevant for children. It

is designed to support school readiness and early education while making learning exciting and engaging.

The early learning applications on the Early Literacy Station span every curriculum area: reading, language arts, math, science, STEM, social studies, writing, graphic arts, typing, music, and more. The content is correlated to Common Core standards.

AWE’s Early Literacy Station, the company’s flagship product, is found in over 40% of the public libraries across the United States as well as in many communities in Canada and abroad.

December means the end of Fall Term is in sight at Blue Mountain Community College students but it also means it is time to plan ahead for Winter Term 2015. After finishing up with final exams the week of December 8-11, BMCC students will have a breather before hitting the books again on January 5.

There is still time for students to register for Winter Term classes.

Anyone needing assistance is welcome to contact BMCC Boardman for placement tests, advising and other registration help.

A new session of GED prep and ESL (English as a Second Language) classes will begin after the new year. Orientation is required for students who haven’t attended a BMCC class this academic year (starts summer term.) Orientation will be held on January 5 & 7 for ESL students and January 6 &8 for GED students. The sessions will be held from 5:30-8:30 pm and the cost is $10. Classes start the week of January 12 so returning students are encouraged to get registered prior to that time.

Two new classes have been de-

veloped for the Mechatronics: Industrial Automation Technology program and will roll out Winter Term. Introduction to Industrial Automation Technology (IAT109) is a two credit course that will provide an introduction and orientation to the field. Industrial Drafting (DRF112) is a three credit class that will provide an introduction to computer aided drafting using AutoCAD software. Both classes are online. Students with questions about the program should contact Ann Marie Hardin at ahardin@bluecc.edu or by phone at 541-278-5810.

The office at BMCC Boardman will be open regular hours through the December 11, which is the end of finals week. These hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-7:30 pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7:30 pm. For the remainder of December, the office will be open December 15, 17, and 22 from 1-5:30. City of Boardman has Snow & Ice Control Program We all know how unpredictable the weather can be in our area. We have experienced winters (normally December, January and February) with no snow accumulation, to winters such as we’ve had in the past that deposited heavy snow accumulation.

With a population of over 3000 and 80 plus lane-miles of streets, the City is continually striving to provide an acceptable level of snow and ice control.

NORMAL SNOW CONDITIONS Our fleet of snow fighting equipment is readied before the ice and snow seasons each year. One, five-yard dump truck with sanding box and plow, 2.5 ton dump truck with sanding box and plow, combined with a crew of trained equipment operators, will keep major streets passable.

The City has established procedures and policies for addressing snow plowing and sanding of the streets. The procedures and policies are set on a priority basis, which set predetermined routes as follows: First Priority: All main streets and main intersections considered to be the highest priorities to keep open the main streets and roadway systems connecting the fire station, police station, emergency medical services, and schools.

Second Priority: Other streets and selected areas such as steep hills and other problem areas identified by the public works department and/or police department.

Third Priority: Residential Streets CITIZEN RESPONSIBILITIES Snow can be beautiful, but it also can create hazards. When residents fail to clear their sidewalks, the result can be a treacherous ice patch. We need your help in protecting pedestrians from possible injury.

Residents are responsible to maintain their sidewalks and driveways adjacent to their property.

Please pile snow on your yard, not in the street. If your sidewalk is icy, you may correct the hazard by applying a heavy coat of sand.

Handicapped, elderly or other individuals unable to clean snow from their sidewalks may choose to contact someone to do this job for them. The following may provide this service to you: RHS Wrestling Team – Coach Boor 481- 2525 COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT SNOW REMOVAL Q: Can’t the City remove the snow they put in my driveway and sidewalks?

A: Our primary duty is to open and keep open the main roadway system. Considering the large num-

ber of driveways and amount of sidewalks in the City, it is too costly and time consuming, and would require additional City staff and equipment to perform this service.

Q: Why not plow to the center?

A: Plowing snow and piling it to the center of a street causes a hazardous situation. Traffic flow is restricted by eliminating a portion of a lane and this practice can also create sight obstructions for low vehicles. The freeze-thaw cycle creates daily problems when the melting snow freezes on the road surface every evening.

Q: Can I park my car on the street?

A: Yes, on those streets where parking is normally allowed. However, having to maneuver a snowplow in and out between parked vehicles can not only be dangerous, but also nerve-wracking for our drivers and is not an efficient way to plow the snow. One must be aware that if a car is parked on the side of the street, we could plow your car in with a snow bank.

Q: Why are residential streets seldom plowed?

A: With over 80 lane miles of streets to maintain, with limited equipment and staff, it is usually not possible to plow all of the streets. We make every effort to get to the lower priority streets when conditions allow.

Riverside JR/Sr High School begins grant application process The members of Riverside Jr/Sr High School student body, Community 101, invite you to submit a grant application to our ASB group.

Community 101 involves students through service, leadership and charitable giving; we learn about our community through volunteering and grantmaking. Our Community 101 group has the opportunity to distribute $4,000 to Oregon nonprofits that help people in our community. Funding is provided by PGE employies. Grants generally range from $500 to $2,000,

and will promote our mission statement, which is: The leadership students of Riverside Jr/Sr high school Community 101 class, with funds from the PGE Foundation, will support efforts within our community that address issues related to bullying and cyber bullying and promote interactions within diverse populations. Prevention and awareness activities targeted at 4th-12th grade students will take priority.

We will be accepting grant applications until January 31, 2015.

Please email Marie Shimer at marie.shimer@morrow.k12.or.us for an application. We will review all proposals and request a site visit and/or an interview with a representative from your organization.

Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.

olumbia River Harvesters are starting their Holiday Food Drive. This years goal is to collect enough donations to provide a complete Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner for each of their patrons.

CRH serves at least 60 families a week, and are open Monday, Friday and Saturday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.

From December 1st through December 31st, just bring in non-perishable food items and we will waive your overdue fines. The food will be donated to the Columbia River Harvesters and the Neighborhood Center to help those in need. he Kiwanis Club of Boardman continue the tradition of donat ing a Student’s Dictionary to each third grade student at Sam Boardman and A C Houghton Elementary Schools recently. The Kiwanis are anxious to see each student succeed and have made this project a priority.

The Kiwanis raise money throughout the year to help pay for the dictionaries.

Boardman Kiwanis meets the first and third Thursdays of each month at 6:30 am at River Lodge and Grill.

Letter to the Editor Thank you again for the opportunity to share the fun we had while preparing our 6 th Annual Community Thanksgiving Celebration. Our table was full of wonderful Board Members this year, who came with great ideas and smiles. We were sponsored by the Good Shepherd Lutheran, First Baptist, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic, & Getsemani Centro de Adoracion Churches; and the Church of Latter Day Saints were amazing in helping us serve and cleanup after the dinner. We had about 100 volunteers including an enthusiastic group from our Jr. High and High School. What a great group to work with! We had a great time.

Sam Boardman Elementary and the Senior Center graciously allowed us to use their facilities. Suzanne Akers helped us with advertisement. We really appreciated the front page ad in the North Morrow Times and a mention in the East Oregonian and the Hermiston Herald, and a spot on KOHU’s – Odds and Ends program, and notices sent to Face Book and Just Serve.com Thank you.

We are so thankful for our generous community. MDT and Kiwanis team up to make blankets for foster kids

For the second year, the Multi Disciplinary Team has joined the Boardman Kiwanis Club members to make fleece tied blankets that will be given out to Morrow County foster children. Boardman Kiwanis Club began this project six years ago. The Multi Disciplinary Team, MDT (of Morrow County) is made up of members from Morrow County Health Department, Department of Human Resources, Boardman Police Department, Morrow County Sheriff’s Department, Community Counseling Solutions, Domestic Violence Services, Morrow County School District, Morrow County District Attorney’s office, Juvenile Department of Morrow County, and Head Start. MDT meets once each month to discuss all cases that pertain to children and how best to meet the needs of children and families. Their goal is to protect the children of Morrow County.

Karen Dike, Detective with Morrow County Sheriff’s office is a charter member of Boardman Kiwanis, and was instrumental in the partnership between the Kiwanis and MDT for construction of the blankets.

“I’ve seen kids placed in foster care who were unable to take anything of their own with them,” Dike says. “They need to have something to wrap up in to give them comfort.” The idea of the give away blankets came to Dike, who started the program in 2009.

The group makes enough blankets to last at least a year.

This year MDT purchased enough material to make 20 blankets; the Kiwanis purchased material for 11 blankets. The group meets at Boardman Senior Center to cut and tie each quilt.

The group made their work session a great social event by MDT providing pizza, drinks and dessert for everyone.

Boardman Kiwanis meets the first and third Thursdays of each month at 6:30 am at River Lodge and Grill. Everyone is invited to attend a meeting. Their mission is “Serving the Children of the World.” Some of their annual projects include providing free dictionaries to all 3rd graders, the Boardman Halloween Party, Rollin’ on the River, and scholarships for graduating seniors.
