Boardman continues its traditional Easter Egg Hunt April 19th The Tillicum Club of Boardman is happy to say that it’s that time of year again when the Easter Bunny and his helpers come to town and leave lots of eggs for the annual Community Easter Egg Hunt. Come on down to the Boardman Marina Park on April 19th at 10 am to join in the festivities. New this year is a photo station to have your picture taken with the Easter Bunny.

Easter Egg Hunt is for ages ranging from Walking 1 year olds to 4th grade. Some changes have been made to the age break downs for the sections, so please be looking for those. Boardman to sponsor spring clean up The City of Boardman will sponsor a community-wide clean-up the month of April. The City has garbage vouchers available, with a fifty dollar limit, to residents of the City of Boardman. The vouchers are valid during the month of April at Finley Butte Landfill and the North Morrow Transfer Station.

The garbage voucher program encourages citizens to clean up their residences by disposing of yard debris. City residents may pick up their vouchers at Boardman City Hall at 200 City Center Circle beginning April 1st. For more information on this program, call Boardman City Hall at 481-9252.

National Weather Services conducts free skywarn weather spotter training Wants residents to keep eyes on skies Weather spotter network will help track storms Volunteers are being sought to participate in the latest weather spotter training on May 19 in Heppner.

Weather spotters trained by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS) are key volunteers who assist the meteorologists by providing up-to-date information about storm activity.

The Skywarn Weather Spotter training is free and will be held at the Morrow County Emergency Operations Center, located at 320 South Willow View, beginning at 1 p.m. There will be light refreshments and door prizes. The training is being co-sponsored by Morrow County Emergency Management.

April 1st marks a milestone for Boardman-based Mid Columbia Title Company --they have been in business for twenty years!

Founder Renee’ Grace started her title and escrow experience in 1985 when she started working for Homestead Title in Hermiston.

“I loved the business, and tried to learn everything I could about it as soon as possible,” she says.

That led to Renee’ having a title plant built so she could issue title insurance policies for Morrow County, and she opened for business April 1st, 1994 in the previous City Hall building.

Mid Columbia Title soon outgrew that office, and they moved to 205 NE Boardman Avenue, next to Umatilla Electric Cooperative in 1997, where they remain today.

Renee’ Grace moved to Boardman in 1984 when she and her husband, John were married.

Renee’ had previous experience in the banking industry. The couple has two sons, John Michael, age 23 and Tyler age 18.

In 2003, Escrow Officer Krista Price became a stockholder and part owner of Mid Columbia Title Co. Krista handles all residential, commercial, farmland, 1031 Exchanges and a vast variety of escrows. She is well respected in the industry.

Krista two children, Ashley age 12 and Corbin, 9.

The third member of the expert team is Michelle Seeley, who has worked for Mid Columbia Title off and on since 2001. Michelle is training for the title position and has escrow experience as well. Michelle

is married to Ryan, and has a two year old son, Cole.

The company provides timely and accurate title searches, friendly and knowledgable escrow closing and has Spanish translation interpreters upon request.

Two performances of RAPUNZEL enchant Boardman community By: Carol Michael It was out of the tower and on the run in Boardman, Saturday, March 29 at Sam Boardman Elementary School. Missoula Children’s Theater and 40 local students presented an original musical adaptation of RAPUNZEL. Supportive friends and foes helped Rapunzel escape from the towering imprisonment of Madame Gothel. Playing the title character, Rapunzel, were Dixie Gonzales and Lina Dunn. Aaron Lester and Kayden Kendrick played the Prince. Rapunzel’s Parents were played by Joshua Gray and Dakota Young. Larissa Jones played Madame Gothel.

This Rapunzel story took place in the French Countryside. Garden Spies “Ears” of Corn, Desirae Klaviter and Mary Hammond; Potato “Eyes” Stephanie Fudala, reported all garden comings and goings back to Madame Gothel.

Frenchy, played by Tour Director Steven Thomas, and his friends, the Wood Elves, Alax Dunn, Hannah Lawson, Carolyn Ginther, Natalie DeLaCruz, Mary Sollman, McKenna Kendrick, Olivia Lawson and Lisa Ginther did their best to

help Rapunzel escape the grasp of Madame Gothel. The lost Prince, and Rapunzel’s Unicorns friends, Maria Schneider and Alexis Partlow, teamed up to get Rapunzel down from the tower.

Meanwhile fearful Ogres Ian Powell, Paola Porras, Faith Acheson and Joshua Wilson encouraged the garden Mushrooms Elaina Salgado, Yelena Bernal, Aunika Partlow, Dylan Young, Emma Lester, and Mikayla Powell to grow, grow, grow!. Gus the Fun Guy mushroom was played by Michael Wilson Somehow, the Billy Goats Gruff, Hannah Wilson, Abigail Prosser, Hailey Daltoso got into the garden. Strangely, Three Bears: Karensa Jones, Leticia Bernal, and Finnegan Lawson accompanied by Matthew Hammond as Bucky the Beaver appeared in the garden as well. A Troll, played

by Paden Williams, came out from under his bridge to trick Rapunzel’s parents; Billy Goats, Bears, Beaver into mistaking their identities.

At this point, the Bears and Beaver confused Rapunzel with Goldilocks and chased her through

the forest. Madame Gothel apologized for her bullying ways and vowed to be nicer in the future. In short, Rapunzel and the cast told a silly tale of personal triumph and friendship. Missoula Directors also presented 3 free workshops on theater skills and self confidence during the week.

Rehearsal and Performance Accompanist was Connie McElrath.

Community Coordinator was Angela Schneider. John & Katie Dawson, Walt & Connie McElrath hosted Missoula Theater Directors Steven Thomas and Grace McGeoch during the week. Hanna Payne served as Lighting Director throughout the week. Morrow Co. School District Principal Matt Matz provided workshop, rehearsal and performance space.

Each of the two Rapunzel performances played to a packed house.

North Morrow Community Foundation, workshop and performance sponsors, appreciated the presence of cast family and friends, as well as general community members in the audience. “Youth always need applause for their efforts, and it is great when cast relatives and interested public are present,.” said a NMCF Director.

Spring term begins at BMCC March 31 marked the first day of Spring Term 2014 at Blue Mountain Community College. With just a few exceptions, it is too late to register for credit classes but for students on a mad scramble, there are a couple of options. Call for information on classes with a late start date that are still available.

Local classes of interest this spring include a couple of exercise options, Excel and Handgun Proficiency. Looking for a spring workout? Sign up now for Spring Cross Training, team taught by Karen Kegler and Maria Richards at Riverside High School on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Or jump on the Zumba bandwagon taught by the energetic Joy Bittinger (who just received an additional Zumba instructor certification.) Zumba is scheduled for Monday and Thursday from 4:15-5:15 pm at Sam Boardman Elementary. Students may sign up for either one or two day per week classes.

Do you need Excel skills? BMCC Boardman will offer a four week class on the topic on Tuesday evenings from 5-7 pm starting April 8. The class starts with the basics but covers an interesting and useful array of excel skills. (Class is highly recommended by students who just completed it!)

Computer Basics is offered on Wednesday afternoons from 2-4 pm beginning April 9 for beginning users.

Handgun Proficiency is a handson class set for Saturday, May 17 at the Boardman Center. Deputy Brandon uses the morning session to cover laws and safety and the afternoon session is devoted to a range session where students demonstrate proficiency with their firearms.

Also, new sessions of GED Prep and ESL (English as a Second Language) begin the week of March 31.

GED classes are held Tuesday and Thursday whle ESL is set for Monday and Wednesday. Classes run from 5:30-8:30 pm.

4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION The Boardman Chamber of Commerce 4th of July Committee is working hard to make sure we have another successful event in the books. We hinted that there would be some exciting new changes to our Annual 4th of July Celebration, here is an idea of what to expect this year: More kid’s entertainment like puppet shows, fairy princess characters, face painting, carnival games and balloon animals. New contests like tug-owar and water balloon toss will give you the opportunity to win some money! Another

money raised goes to fund scholarships at the Riverside High School.

March was as normal a really busy month.

We have been busy helping out on the AED task force and I went to Heppner to help out with the parade for the Wee Bit O’Ireland on St. Pat’s week end. I always have a fun time at that event. One of our members, the Oxford Suites in Hermiston, hosted an “Alive after Five” event. It was well attended and a lot of fun! They did a scavenger hunt through the hotel so you could check out

some of the rooms and their meeting rooms.

Of course they had delicious food that they use to cater events and Sno Road Winery was there for our tasting pleasure. I personally think they should do it more often; I had a great time and got to see a lot of people.

April will keep us busy as we start the month off at the Main Street Sinclair and Dino Mart grand opening on Saturday, April 5. We will have a Grand Opening for the new Trail Apartments later this month

and we are hosting a candidates forum for the county commissioners. Tillamook Days at the SAGE Center are always lots of fun and I LOVE mac & cheese, so come join us on Friday and Saturday, April 25 & 26 for a delicious lunch.

I wish you all a very blessed Easter and a great spring. I’m even ready for the warm weather. But I would imagine come May I’ll have had enough of the warm weather and be wishing for fall!!!!

Bella Vista Estates residents purchase manufactured home park Boardman, OR (March 14, 2014) — Community and Shelter Assistance Corporation (CASA of Oregon) is pleased to announce that on January 31, 2014, residents of the 127space Desert Springs Mobile Home Park, a manufactured housing community in Boardman, Oregon, completed the purchase of their community.

By establishing the Bella Vista Estates Cooperative, residents were able to access financing from Banner Bank, Rural Community Assistance Corporation and CASA of Oregon. Lewis & Clark Law School’s Small Business Legal Clinic provided legal expertise. One of the largest resident-owned communities converted to date in Oregon, the preservation of Bella Vista Estates ensures that residents, many of whom are agricultural workers in the area, are able to enjoy economic security and stability.

“We are excited to accomplish this goal for the benefit of the hardworking families in our manufactured housing community. They can rest assured that affordable housing will always be available near their places of work”, said Clarissa Jimenez, Interim Board Secretary of Bella Vista Estates

The conversion follows on the heels of six other resident-owned communities that CASA of Oregon has assisted – Horizon Homeowners Cooperative in McMinnville, Oregon; Green Pastures Senior Cooperative in Redmond, Oregon; Saunders Creek Homeowners Cooperative in Gold Beach, Oregon; Vida Lea Community Cooperative in Leaburg, Oregon; Clackamas River Community Cooperative in Clackamas, Oregon and West-Side Pines Cooperative in Bend, Oregon.

Resident ownership occurs when owners of manufactured homes form a non-profit membership association to purchase their community when it becomes available for sale. Without resident ownership, homeowners risk eviction when a community is sold to a new owner who may convert the land to other uses, or impose higher land rents over which the homeowners have no control.

Sign up for April 24th Historical Hanford Tour Interested persons are invited to sign up for the April 24 tour of the historical B Reactor at the Hanford complex in Washington.

The Morrow County Historical Society is handling the arrangements for this tour of an important historic development in our region, in cooperation with Morrow County Special Transportation Service.

A Morrow County Special Transportation bus will leave Heppner at 7:30 A.M. on April 24.

It will pick up participants in Boardman and Irrigon and travel on to the tour site. The tour will begin at 11:15 and last approximately four hours. It does not include climbing; can accommodate canes, walkers, and wheelchairs, although some areas will be tight; and chairs are available for sitting

when needed. Participants are responsible for their snacks, drinks, sack lunches.

Individuals are encouraged to get on the list of participants now.

Sign-up will close on April 10. Handling sign-ups in Heppner is Louis Carlson (541-676-5302), in Boardman is Mildred Baker (541481-4215), and in Irrigon is Donna Eppenbach (541-922-3197). Senior citizens and individuals with disabilities will have priority if interest exceeds the maximum of 44 per tour.

The suggested donation per person will be $10 for the bus ride.

The tour is free.

Frostbite Golf Tournament enjoys best weather in years!

Thank you to our many businesses that sponsored a hole or donated a raffle prize. The weather was absolutely wonderful!!! Sunshine and just a light wind! The golfers were golfing in their shirt sleeves, no coats required.

We had 17 teams play this year (one team had to cancel at the last minute.) They had a delicious lunch from Judy Scott’s Chuck Wagon of BBQ Pork sandwiches and some of them won some great raffle prizes!

We are anxious to finalize the financials so we can see how many RHS Seniors will be able to have the opportunity to receive a scholarship.

Thank you to the sponsors, the volunteers and the golfers for making this such a great event. Mark your calendar for the last Saturday in March and plan to come join us next year!

At the March 18, 2014 City Council meeting, Councilors reappointed Planning Commissioners David Gray and Bill Hancock to serve three year terms and appointed Ed Glenn to the Budget Committee for a three year term.

This is the second appointment for both Mr. Gray and Mr. Hancock to the City’s Planning Commission.

The Planning Commission is comprised of seven members appointed by the City Council and is a permanent advisory body to the

council on matters related to planning and development. The commission holds monthly public meetings to consider land use and zoning matters presented by staff, such as plan amendments, zone changes, conditional use permits, variances and tentative subdivision projects. Meetings are the third Wednesday of each month at 7pm at Boardman City Hall. Currently the Planning Commission has two vacancies. Interested parties should contact Boardman City

Hall at 541-481-9252.

Mr. Glenn has served in several capacities with the City of Boardman including, Mayor, Councilor, Budget Committee member and Planning Commissioner. The Budget Committee is comprised of the Boardman City Council and seven members of the community, appointed by the City Council. The Committee holds one or more meetings each April to review and make recommendations to the City Council for the City’s budget and the Urban Renewal Districts’ Budget.

Albert Einstein to appear at the Boardman Library April 21st Coming soon, Albert Einstein alive and in person in north Morrow County!

Broadway and film veteran Duffy Hudson will bring Albert Einstein to life in a unique one-man show, “The Relativity of Albert Einstein” at the Oregon Trail Library District’s branch library at 200 S. Main St. in Boardman.

The Einstein program will be held on Monday, April 21 at 7 p.m. The

program is free and all ages are invited.

Imagine Albert Einstein explaining the Theory of Relativity in a fun and exciting way, without any required knowledge of mathematics or physics. The show covers elements of Einstein’s life and humor, the speed of light, time travel, gravity and space-time, and what is E=MC2 anyway?

This show will excite students and adults alike, looking at the mechanics of the Universe with new eyes.

Sustainable gardening The Oregon State University Extension Service encourages sustainable gardening practices.

Preventative pest management is emphasized over reactive pest control. Identify and monitor problems before acting and opt for the least toxic approach that will remedy the problem. The conservation of biological control agents (predators, parasitoids) should be favored over chemical controls.

Use chemical controls only when necessary and only after thoroughly reading the pesticide label. First consider cultural, then physical and biological controls.

Choose the least-toxic options (insecticidal soaps, horticultural oils, botanical insecticides, and organic and synthetic pesticides — when used judiciously).

Planning · Write in your garden journal throughout the growing season. · Prepare garden soil for spring planting. Incorporate generous amounts of organic materials and other amendments, using the results of a soil analysis as a guide. · Prepare raised beds in areas where cold soils and poor drainage are a continuing problem. Incorporate generous amounts (at least 2 inches) of organic materials. · Use a soil thermometer to help you know when to plant vegetables. When the soil is consis-

tently above 60 degrees Farenheit, some warm season vegetables (beans, sweet corn) can be planted.

Maintenance and Clean Up · Allow foliage of spring-flowering bulbs to brown and die down before removing. · Apply commercial fertilizers, manure, or compost to cane, bush (gooseberries, currants, and blueberries), and trailing berries. · Place compost or well decomposed manure around perennial vegetables, such as asparagus and rhubarb. · Cut back ornamental grasses to a few inches above the ground, in early spring. · Cover transplants to protect against late spring frosts. · Optimum time to fertilize lawns.

Apply 1 pound nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of lawn. Reduce risks of run-off into local waterways by not fertilizing just prior to rain, and not over-irrigating so that water runs off of lawn and onto sidewalk or street.

Plant gladioli, hardy transplants of alyssum, phlox, and marigolds, if weather and soil conditions permit.

It’s a great time to start a vegetable garden. Among the vegetables you can plant, consider: · Central Oregon and higher elevations of eastern Oregon (late April): Peas, radishes, lettuce, spinach, and turnips. · Columbia and Snake River val-

leys, Ontario: Snap and lima beans, beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, chard, chives, sweet corn, slicing and pickling cucumbers, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce, onion sets, parsnips, peas, potatoes, pumpkins, radishes, rhubarb, rutabagas, summer and winter squash, and turnips.

Clean up hiding places for slugs, sowbugs and millipedes.

Least toxic management options for slugs include barriers and traps.

Baits are also available for slug control; use caution around pets.

Read and follow all label directions prior to using baits or any other chemical control.

Monitor strawberries for spittlebugs and aphids; if present, wash off with water or use insecticidal soap as a contact spray. Follow label directions.

If necessary, spray apples and pears when buds appear for scab.

Cut and remove weeds near the garden to remove potential sources of plant disease.

Use floating row covers to keep insects such as beet leaf miners, cabbage maggot adult flies, and carrot rust flies away from susceptible crops.

A turnout of 370 people participated in the SAGE Center’s first job fair. The 28 exhibitors took the opportunity to seek out new talent for the people who are actively searching for employment in the Boardman area. Photo contributed BOARDMAN – (March 5, 2014) – An even 370 people attended the SAGE Center’s first agriculture and energy job fair Wednesday in Boardman.

The event highlighted by 28 exhibitors from regional agriculture and energy industries, educational institutions and government agencies took the opportunity to collaborate, seek out new talent and provide information to a wide range of people at the SAGE Center.

“There was a diverse group of people who are actively looking for employment with a lot of different skill sets here today,” said Kalie Davis, SAGE Center manager.

“There is a great partnership between the businesses and colleges to let students know what education they need to fill current positions.”

Organizations participating the job fair echoed Davis’ sentiments regarding the event.

Kirk Jacobson, Beef Northwest human resources director, said the

event exceeded his expectations.

Beef Northwest runs a feedlot southwest of Boardman.

“I found at least five qualified candidates for positions here in Boardman,” Jacobson said. “I liked the outreach to the ag teachers. It helps connect me with their students in their department so they can come see what we do. I am also able to work with other HR professionals in the region.”

Students from local high schools attended to learn about available careers and what education is required to help get those jobs.

Walla Walla Community College showcased its technical training available and brought students who will be seeking jobs in the future. Brian Evensen, head electrical instructor, and James Bradshaw, energy systems technology director, both liked networking with businesses and being able to meet with potential students.

Boardman Foods vice president of operations, Debbie Radie, said she appreciated the opportunity to interact with community colleges that conduct workforce training as well as many individuals who are genuinely interested in coming to work at the Port of Morrow.

Boardman Foods is an onion processor at the port.

Davis said she plans to host the event next year and stay true to the SAGE Center’s mission of showcasing the region’s agriculture and energy industries. She said she also hopes to promote local businesses and expand marketing to other regions and more jobseekers.

About the SAGE Center: The SAGE Center – Sustainable Agriculture and Energy Center – is a new, interactive visitor center in Boardman. The center is operated by the Port of Morrow and showcases the industries at the port, sustainable agriculture and energy production in Morrow County.

ational Weather Service conducts free Skywarn Weather Spotter Training in Heppner Wants Residents To Keep Eyes On Skies Weather Spotter Network Will Help Track Storms Volunteers are being sought to participate in the latest weather spotter training on May 19 in Heppner.

Weather spotters trained by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS) are key volunteers who assist the meteorologists by providing up-to-date information about storm activity.

The Skywarn Weather Spotter training is free and will be held at the Morrow County Emergency Operations Center, located at 320 South Willow View, beginning at 1 p.m. There will be
