Ballots to be mailed October 14th, Free piano concert to must be returned by November 2nd be given in Boardman Morrow County Elections Clerk Bobbi Childers says the general election ballots will be mailed out on October 14th, and must be returned either by mail or to one of the ballot drop-off locations before 8:00 pm, November 2nd. The ballots are expansive this election. Some of the choices Boardman residents will make are: US Senator: Ron Wyden, Jim Huffman, Rick Staggenberg, Marc Delphine or Bruce Cronk. US Rep. in Congress, 2nd District: Joyce Segers or Greg Walden. Governor: John Kitzhaber, Greg Kord, Wes Wagner or Chris Dudley. State Treasurer: Walt Brown, Chris Teifer, Ted Wheeler or Michael Marsh. State Rep., 57th District: Greg Smith or Jean Falbo. County Commissioner: Ken Greib. Judge of Court of Appeals: Rebecca Duncan. Justice of the Peace: Annetta Spicer or Earl Woods. Boardman City Councilors: Neil Livingston or Christie Perry (Vote for 3, write-ins available). Morrow Co. Soil & Water Cons. District: Zone 1, no candidate filed; Zone 4, no candidate filed, Zone 5: Judy Barber. Measure 25-56, Boardman Rural Fire Protection District General Obligation Bond Authorization Question: Shall the District issue general obligation bonds in an amount not exceeding $11,000,000.00 for a new Emergency Services Station? If the bonds are approved, they will be payable from taxes on property or property ownership that are not subject to the limits of Section 11 and 11b, Article XI of the Oregon Constitution. Summary: The measure authorizes the district to issue gen-
eral obligation bonds to construct and equip facilities to position the district to respond to the demands of the growing community. The projects proposed are: * Construct and equip a new fire station and training facility on land donated by the Port of Morrow. The station will include housing for 24-hour firefighter staff, emergency medical technician (EMT) staff, and students enrolled in the Educational Sleeper Program who would supplement volunteers to reduce response times and increase staffing resources available. * Replace old and outdated apparatus and equipment. * Refinance outstanding capital obligations. * Pay bond issuance costs. Measure 30-86, Umatilla Morrow Radio & Data District, for permanent rate limit of $0.17/$1,000 assessed value beginning 2011-12. Question: Shall the District be authorized to have a permanent rate limit of $0.17 per $1,000.00 assessed value beginning FY2011-12? Summary: This measure establishes a permanent rate limit of $.17 per $1,000 assessed value for the Umatilla Morrow Radio & Data District. A home assessed at $100,000 would pay $17.00 per year. The estimated total amount that would be collected by the district is $815,000. The district may levy a lower rate. This permanent rate is an upper limit that by law can never be raised. Referred to the people by the legislative assembly are: Measure 70, Amends Constitution: Expands availability of home ownership loans for Oregon veterans through Oregon War Veterans’ Fund. Measure 71, Amends Constitution: Requires legislature to meet annually; limits length of legisla-
tive sessions; provides exceptions. Measure 72, Amends Constitution: Authorizes exception to $50,000 state borrowing limit for state’s real and personal property projects. Measure 73, Requires increased minimum sentences for certain repeated sex crimes, incarceration for repeated driving under influence. Measure 74, Establishes medical marijuana supply system and assistance and research programs, allows limited selling of marijuana. Measure 75, Authorizes Multnomah County casino; casino to contribute monthly revenue percentage to state for specified purposes. Measure 76, Amends Constitution: Continues lottery funding for parks, beaches, wildlife habitat, watershed protection beyond 2014; modifies funding process.
Luncheon to feature Career Day students The Boardman Chamber of Commerce Career Day luncheon will be Wednesday, October 20 at the Port of Morrow office building After students have spent the morning with their assigned businesses observing their daily routines and activities, the sponsoring businesses and students will then meet at the Port of Morrow for the lunch (cost is $10.00 per person). The featured speakers will be the students and the employers talking about their Job Shadow experience. Catering the luncheon will be Judy Scott’s ChuckWagon. Noted recording artist John Nilsen will present a piano concert October 17th at the Boardman Senior Center. John Nilsen, noted Magic Wing recording artist, will present a free piano concert Sunday, October 17 at 4:00 pm at the Boardman Senior Center, 101 Tatone Street, in Boardman. The one hour concert is free, but donations toward expenses will be accepted. Born in 1956 in Seattle, Washington, John and family have been residents of Oregon since 1960. Nilsen started studying classical piano at the age of six and plays a variety of music including many pieces of his own composition. His over 200 annual performances have included national tours of the United States, Great Britain and Japan. His recordings have been released in Germany, Taiwan, Philippines, Great Britain and
Singapore and have sold over 700,000 copies. Influenced by The Beatles, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Pat Metheny and Bruce Cockburn, Nilsen, a graduate of Southern Oregon University, tried his hand at rock & roll, serving as guitarist/ vocalist for several bands in the ’70s and ’80s. John’s new CD, ACROSS OREGON, is currently #8 on the New Age Reporter national radio chart and was released on July 9, 2002. It is a collection of melodic John Nilsen original compositions. ACROSS OREGON, released on Magic Wing, is Nilsen’s fourteenth release and is inspired and written about the state John calls home. Several CDs will be available for purchase.
