WELCOME TO THE PROFESSIONAL RESIDENCY AND CLASS PROGRAMME FOR 2018-19.

We are delighted to present a season of remarkable quality, variety and internationality: from a landmark residency with Mona Hatoum, to intimate specialised workshops and masterclasses. Uniting it all is our commitment to world-class arts and learning.

This season, we are delighted to announce inspiring luminaries Silvia Levenson, Anne Petters, Karen Akester, Alan Horsley, Marina Hanser, Anthony Scala, Karl Harron and Ian Pearson leading the specialised workshops and masterclasses. MASTERCLASSES SHIFTING BOUNDARIES: 8 - 16 AUGUST

Silvia Levenson will lead participants in developing their own language by using glass as narrative medium. The basic glass working technique will be lost wax and open face kiln-forming. The aim of this workshop is shifting boundaries in order to think new works and installations inspired by the sense of place and identity.

HOT PRINTING: FRIT DE VERRE: 27 AUGUST - 4 SEPTEMBER

In this 10 day masterclass, Anne Petters will introduce a specific glass frit technique, which translates the idea of intaglio printing into a sculptural kiln-forming process. In her work Anne Petters uses glass and other materials, including natural phenomena, in a poetic and metaphoric way.

SPECIALISED WORKSHOPS NARRATIVE SCULPTURE: THROUGH PRINTMAKING AND PATE DE VERRE: 7 - 12 MAY

Karen Akester offers an introduction to open mold casting and pate de verre; a fantastic process which allows vibrant and precise colour application. Taking inspiration from folktales, poetry and storytelling, you will create your own narrative structures.

Through demonstrations, drawing, printmaking and discussion we will explore colour and glass paste application, translating your prints and drawings into small wax models. From these we will make refractory mold’s which we paint and pack with glass powders and frits. The fired glass pieces will be cold worked and assembled to create your finished sculptures. Your prints will be stitched and bound to create your accompanying ‘storybook’.

ANATOMY AND GLASS: 28 MAY - 1 JUNE

Alan Horsley will be leading a class dedicated to the development of figurative sculpture in cast glass following the process from creation through to cast object. The first part of the course will be spent working with a life model sculpting directly from life in clay and wax.

These 3 dimensional drawings will then be taken into the mold shop and the techniques for making complex glass casting molds explored and explained the casts will then be fired and cast in glass.

SPECIALISED WORKSHOPS

THE PERFECT VESSEL - KARL HARRON: 1 - 7 JULY Form: “…by which shape is determined, as distinguished from the material of which it is composed, giving it individuality and a distinctive character”.

The aim of this 7-day class is to achieve a “sublime form”. The process is to discard the superfluous and to identify and develop a personal concept. The result will be a form that is the simple expression of a complex thought and students will be encouraged to adopt a sculptural approach to their work – a search for form and push their glass in a new direction rather than master a technique. In order to develop your aesthetic and conceptual perspective, while negotiating the technical challenges of deepslumping into 3-step ceramic molds, we will begin with an introductory presentation given by Karl, early on the first morning of class. Students will challenge themselves further by designing a piece of work made of only two colours of reactive opalescent Bullseye sheet glass, with mark-making realised through the application of accessory glasses such as frits, powders, confetti and stringers.

Discussions, power point presentations by all, and technical talks will encourage and enable students to expand their ideas once outside the classroom.

Students are requested to bring along their own hand-tools if possible, note-pad and pen, a camera and a piece of work which best illustrates their style.

The participants on this course will need to have a level of experience which will allow them to get the most out of the course. If you feel comfortable cutting and handling glass and want to use this class to expand your knowledge, please apply.

After teaching his workshop Karl will continue on at North Lands Creative for two weeks working on a personal development residency. Karl will be using this time to research and create a body of work that is influenced by the landscape and people of Caithness in general and the village of Lybster in particular. An area he has come to feel part of during his long and ongoing connection with North Lands.

SPECIALISED WORKSHOPS

SURFACE, TEXTURE & MARK MAKING: 17 - 21 SEPTEMBER

Marina Hanser will lead a class dedicated to exploring non-traditional methods of mark making in kiln-formed glass to help each artist find their individual voice. The 5-day workshop will introduce a variety of techniques including kiln-forming, kiln-casting, pate de verre and cold working as well as ways to use them to create personal marks, textures and surface finishes. We will use clay, polystyrene, chicken wire, plaster, cloth, paper, wax, sand, found objects and other yet to be discovered materials to explore mark-making techniques directly in glass and in molds.

The class will introduce cold working techniques such as sawing, carving, engraving, grinding and other surface finishes. In order to explore transparency, translucency and opacity we will use the full range of glass products available including billets, sheet glass, frit, powders and glass paint.

Expect to expand both on your technical and conceptual skills through daily demonstrations, discussions and presentations.

SPECIALISED WORKSHOPS IN FROM THE COLD: 24 - 28 SEPTEMBER

Anthony Scala will be returning to North Lands to teach his popular 5 day technical class looking at the possibilities achievable when using cold working techniques within sculptural glass. The class will investigate form, surface finish, decoration and the interplay of light, reflection and refraction within the glass object.

An introduction to the types of adhesives used for dierent methods of construction will also be discussed, as well as techniques for assembling components into a finished piece of work.

INTERMEDIATE FLAME WORKING: 9 - 11 OCTOBER

Continue expanding your flame working skills during this intermediate flame working workshop led by Ian Pearson. Expect to develop the techniques learned in the introduction to flame working class as well as new, more advanced techniques.

This class is open to those who have completed the introduction to flame work class and also those who are already experienced at the torch.

RESIDENCIES

Throughout the year, North Lands Creative offers residency opportunities to professional artists, craft makers and designers who want to develop their work. The selection is highly competitive and we will choose individuals who we believe will make the best use of the facilities we have built for glass making and who may also have a positive impact on the professional glass community. We offer four strands of residency to support your needs.

SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION

Sustainable production residencies are designed to encourage exploration, research, development and experimentation that encourage the development and greater utilisation of eco-design and manufacture principles in glass making. There will be an opportunity to share findings to peers and North Lands Creative visitors via the annual forum and to invite and encourage feedback.

DESIGN-LED

This residency is offered to an artist or designer, who wishes to take an already-developed idea to the next stage and produce a limited edition range that is market focused or responds to a design brief from a commissioner.

SOCIALLY ENGAGED

Aimed at artists who are working nationally/internationally where relevance and needs of the community drive the work, and the community should be involved in shaping the project. The residencies encourage active engagement and collaboration, and an investment over time to address complex social issues.

NEW WORK/ BESPOKE COMMISSION

Aimed at artists, craft makers and designers who are working internationally for whom a change of scenery might offer fresh inspiration; offering the individual dedicated studio time and access to the facilities and technical support with a view to realising a major project or body of work.
