A Note from Dave [Director] Work continues on the new off leash dog park in North Kansas City.

Grading and tree planting have been completed on the area which is located at 32nd and Swift in North Kansas City. The parks department will be adding two shelters, walking path and some dog play features along with an asphalt parking lot in the spring. Work should be completed in the spring or early summer. The park will feature a separate play area for small dogs which will be fenced from the large dog area for dog owners that prefer that option for their pet. All dog owners will be expected to clean up after their own animal using the pet stations provided to assure a great experience for all users.

Want to be a rock star or a classical phenom.

You have to start somewhere and you may as well begin with good practices. Learn to tune your guitar, how to hold your guitar, how to hold your pick, how to read notes and play with a metronome. By the end of class you’ll know a few chords, be able to play a few melodies and have more fun with your guitar.

BRICKS 4 KIDZ FORCES OF NATURE

6+ YRS | Ellen Beatty

Fasten your seat belts; we’re in for some wild weather! This unit is all about the amazing and powerful forces of nature, as students explore the when, where, how and why of all kinds of natural phenomenon. There is a lot of geography in this unit -- we’ll examine a map of the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where most tsunamis occur, view a diagram of the tectonic plates and learn how their movement creates earthquakes, define the area known as “Tornado Alley” in North America, and find out what hurricanes are called in different parts of the world. These lessons are designed to improve your child’s understanding of the forces of nature, while taking care not to alarm. Each model represents the motion of that particular weather or event, with a seat for a mini-figure to take in the action! Take cover because we’re about to take a trip through some wild weather! Kids will love to build moving models of a tornado, a tsunami, an earthquake and a cyclone. Learn how they move, why they happen and what you can do to stay safe!

North Kansas City Parks & Recreation youth sports programs are a non competitive league. The programs emphasizes skill development; learn the rules of the game, team work, sportsmanship, and most important to have FUN! All practices and games are held at Macken Park.

Children may register “with one buddy” for youth team sports. BOTH registration forms must be received along with the registration fee for each child at the same time. If you are new to the NKC sports program, you will be placed on a team by the NKC Parks & Recreation staff.

BITTY SOCCER

A five week introductory session to the sport of soccer. Participants will begin to understand the fundamental motor skills of soccer through games and activities.

The last week will be designated to a scrimmage game.

T-BALL (COED)

4-6 YEARS OLD BY MAY 1, 2014

T-ball is the first step in the baseball/ softball progression. Emphasis is placed on having fun and playing together as a team. Our goal is for the child to learn the correct techniques for batting, throwing, and catching, as well as developing an understanding of the basics of the game.

Registration: March 4 – April 5 (or until teams are filled) Fee: $60 (Includes jersey, hat & trophy)

COACH-PITCH (COED) 7-9 YEARS OLD BY MAY 1, 2014

Coach-Pitch will take over where T-ball ends. The child will learn to hit a ball pitched by their coach, develop fielding techniques and team play will be further developed.

BASEBALL

10-12 YEARS OLD BY MAY 1, 2014

Another step up from coach pitch league.

Players will pitch. Baseball rules and diamond modified to age group. Strong emphasis on baseball instruction in a recreation team setting. No player draft. All players will participate.

SCHOOL OF MAGIC

8+ | Magician & Illusionist T. A. Hamilton

This class is parent/child interaction.

This course provides a basic knowledge concerning the performance of magic and will give the student an opportunity to learn and correctly present magic of many genres.

The course will require practice to achieve maximum results, but the illusions taught are selected to provide an ease of learning while giving the student a background which will provide enjoyment and pleasure for many years to come. Students will learn a different Illusion each week culminating in a magic presentation by the students for their family and friends. Taught my Master Magician and Illusionist T.A. Hamilton, an expert in magic and allied arts. This professional program/ workshop is a wonderful introduction to the World of Magic. Included in this class: Illusion/magic prop each week and a bound book of tricks to take home to practice your magic!

MOMMY & ME CREATIVE CONCOCTIONS

3-5 YRS| DARE TO DABBLE

Unleash your little ones creativity by mixing together different ingredients to concoct your own paints and more! A big part of early art is giving them materials, the opportunity to explore, and to see what those materials can do. Your preschooler will feel such a sense of pride when they are painting with paints or playing with Play-Doh they make themselves. Come to this class with your preschooler and together you will make and explore some homemade art recipes from simple safe ingredients.

CASTLES AND SUN K- 2ND GRADE | Dare to Dabble

Week 3: History of Playing Cards- Use your knowledge of shapes to make a Mastering the Pasteboards Paul Klee inspired landscape using crayons

and watercolor paint! Erin Pearce, Art Director of Dare to Dabble, will guide students in identifying shapes and colors to use in an original landscape inspired by artist Paul Klee.

Join members of the Astronomical Society of Kansas City for a short introductory program on the basics of the science of astronomy. Easy for all to understand! After that, we will go outside and look through the telescopes at the planet Jupiter. You will be shown some beautiful star clusters and nebula’s in our Milky Way Galaxy, and then perhaps other galaxies of the Universe. “

Create a self portrait with a twist! We will examine pieces of art by Salvador Dali, identifying characteristics that we like and can incorporate into our own portraits. What is negative space; and how can I use it to make art? Examine the creative use of negative space in everything from logo designs to fine art. Using a variety of media students will make their own abstract works of art that utilize both positive and negative space.

Learn the fun art of alcohol inks! Sheryl Godsy - Dare to Dabble Creative Coach, will walk you through the steps of making a dream scape scene with inks. We’ll provide the ambiance to inspire you creativity, the supplies and a couple hours of relaxing Dare to Dabble art experience! Best of all, at the end of this class you will have a finished wall hanging to take home and brag about.

18+|Studio Upcycle

Three-Night Course. Create an amazing dragonfly wall hanging made entirely from upcycled materials using a recycled banister spindle, ceiling fan blades, and various ‘found’ bits of embellishment. Search “dragonfly table leg” on Google or Pinterest to get design ideas for your dragonfly. Class is held in three sessions to accommodate creative design, assembly, and paint/glue/ sealant drying time; you may finish in only two sessions depending upon the design you choose.

You say you’ve never painted on canvas?

Erin Pearce—Dare to Dabble Art Director, will walk you through the steps of painting a cherry blossom scene with acrylics. Best of all, at the end of this class you will have a finished painting to take home and brag about.

BEGINNING FONDANT WITH UPCYCLE NEWSPAPER SPRING FLOWERS 18+ | Studio Upcycle 18+ | Jeanine

VALENTINE’S DAY CUPCAKE DECORATING 18+ | Jeanine

Bring 12 baked cupcakes to class and learn the basics of cupcake decorating. Students will decorate the cupcakes in different Valentine themes using buttercream icing and learn different decorating techniques in class and how to use colored sprays and decorations on the cupcakes. The instructor will provide the icing and decorations for the cupcakes. Please bring a box to carry home the completed cupcakes.

Students will learn to cover a cake in rolled fondant and use cut out designs to decorate the cake in this 2 session class. In session one the instructor will show students how to prepare a cake, ice the cake and cover the cake in fondant flowers. Students will be given a supply list for the second session. In the second session the student will bring a cake to class with the supplies and complete their Spring Flower Cake in class.

FIRST NIGHT OF UPCYCLE NEWSPAPER

Two-Night Course. On the first night you will learn to create beautiful designer papers by upcycling common newspaper with stamps, stencils, gesso, and waterbased inks. Each finished page is a unique creation of your very own, perfect for use in decoupage. On the second night you will learn to decoupage a recycled item using the upcycled newspaper you created in the first class. We supply everything you will need, but you are welcome to bring your favorite large cover-stamps or stencils on the first night of class.

SPRING COED SOFTBALL

Registration will begin Monday, February 3 Registration Fee: $410.00 This is a D-level softball league. “D” leagues are for new teams and for teams playing at a recreational level. We offer Spring leagues on Sunday and Friday nights. All games are played at Macken Park. Two new game balls will be provided (one 11” and one 12”). Each eight-team league will play a seven-game round robin. Each league will then be split, based on won-lost record, into an upper and lower division. Each four-team division will then play a three-game round robin. Oneweek priority registration is given to teams sponsored by a North Kansas City business or teams that have played in our league the prior year.

SPRING MEN’S SOFTBALL

Registration will begin Monday, February 3 Registration Fee: $390 This is a D-level softball league. “D” leagues are for new teams and for teams playing at a recreational level. We offer Spring leagues on Tuesday, and Thursday. All games are played at Macken Park. One new game ball will be provided. Each eight-team league will play a seven-game round robin. ADULT KICKBALL LEAGUE Registration begins Monday, February 3 Registration fee: $220

Join North Kansas City Parks and Recreation for our new and exciting adult kickball league at Macken Park. Games will be played on Friday night. First 6 teams registered will play a 10 game round robin schedule. There are no uniform requirements and all league rules are governed by the WAKA rules.

PARKS MEMORIAL PARK

Located at 716 East 23rd Avenue adjacent to the North Kansas City High School. The park is defined by a street meridian and contains several features commemorating the history of wars fought involving American citizens. A replica of the Statue of Liberty is located in Memorial Park.

MACKEN PARK

Located at the corners of Clark Ferguson Drive and Howell Street is home to many varied park activities.

This 60-acre park is utilized for sports leagues, walking, picnicking and several forms of recreation.

Located at 715 East 21st Avenue just east of North Kansas City City Hall. This five-acre park provides a setting for family gatherings and passive activities.

Park Amenities • Wading pool is open noon-6 p.m. daily starting the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend - the second Saturday in August; and then weekends only through Labor Day. Dagg Park will be closed Memorial Day & 4th of July. Please note that this wading pool is for children under 48” tall.

The wading pool will be closed if the following conditions exist: 1. Air or water temperature under 72 degrees 2. Raining 3. Severe weather conditions • Playground • Public restroom building • Two picnic shelters
