A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR Spring has sprung and it is wonderful to see the park come to life with all types of activity. Youth baseball and softball are underway, tennis, bitty soccer, and soon we will be adding pickleball. We have many exciting projects happening at Macken Park. The ball diamond one renovation is almost complete. New tennis court lighting, converting the old ballast lighting to new LED sports lighting will soon be installed, and going out for bid is the resurfacing of Wheel Park and park restroom renovations. Dagg Park splash ground will open over Memorial Day weekend as we kick off summer. We are also gearing up for our Friday Night Concerts with several tribute bands in the works, like The Phil Collins Experience, Bob Jovi, Bonnie Raitt, and Bob Seiger to name a few and Movie in the Park will be back for the months of June, July, and August. We also host a lunchtime concert series, called “Friday in the Park” featuring different styles of entertainment over the lunch hour. Our 6th Annual Arts in the Park festival is coming up the second weekend in June. We are planning for approximately 40 art vendors featuring different mediums, live music, beer garden, food trucks and entertainment for the kids. We hope you can come join us. We will enjoy celebrating spring in Art by making sculptures of flowers and butterflies in clay, working with watercolor to make a spring scene and a mixed media butterfly suncatcher.

Join us for our Performing Arts Camp! Four days of Singing, Dancing, Acting, Comedy, and Games! Come and learn acting styles, dance techniques, new songs, jokes, and more! Please have children dress comfortably with athletic or tennis shoes please, no sandals. Please make sure that students pack a sack lunch and a water bottle.

Join us for Pioneer Camp! Four fun filled days where we learn about what it was like to be a Pioneer in America. We will be square dancing, making fresh lemonade, stamping designs in tin, making pioneer food like drop biscuits and churning butter, playing Pioneer games, and more! Each day we will craft, dance, play, and cook! Please have students bring a sack lunch and water bottle.

Join us for this Imaginative Baking Camp! Four fun filled days of baking and creating in the kitchen. Day 1: Breakfast Baking - scones, muffins, biscuits, donuts. Day 2: Cupcakes – baking cupcakes, filling, frostings, piping skills, and decorating. Day 3: Dough and Bread - fruit bread, homemade butter, garlic bread, and pizza dough. Come learn about birds that you might see in your backyard or in local parks. We will learn what they look like, the sounds they make, what they eat, nesting habits, and more. Each child will receive a packet which will have sheets for each bird, a list of birding links, and a birding journal. We will break about half way into the class, if weather permits, we will walk over to the park to look for birds, then come back and discuss the birds that we saw and finish the rest of the class.

Sports FALL YOUTH BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL North Kansas City Parks & Recreation youth sports programs are NON-COMPETITIVE leagues. The programs emphasize skill development, learning the rules of the game, playing as a team, sportsmanship, and most importantly to have FUN! Children may register with one “buddy” for youth team sports. BOTH registration forms must be received along with the registration fee for each child at the same time. If you are new to the NKC Sports Program, you will be placed on a team by the NKC Parks & Recreation staff.

T-BALL (CO-ED)

Ages 4-6 by September 1 T-ball is the foundation of every future baseball/softball player’s career. Teams focus on understanding the basics of the game, having fun and making new friends. Our goal is for each child to learn the correct skills for batting, throwing and catching to encourage their passion for baseball or softball.

Ages 7-9 by September 1 Players will learn to hit the ball as it is being pitched from a coach and cooperate as a team to earn runs and outs. The primary goal is to prepare your child for the next level of play.

KID PITCH

Ages 10-12 by September 1 Kid Pitch baseball is the final step in our recreation program toward preparing players for competitive play. Players are introduced to other players pitching and incorporate all their skills from batting, throwing and fielding. Your child will completely understand the essence of baseball/ softball after completing the season. All practices and games are held at Macken Park.

Pickleball is a fun and addictive game that combines many elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. This introductory class is geared toward newbies to the sport and taught by a certified instructor. You don’t have to be an athlete to feel empowered by this fun sport, and if you are an athlete, test your skills in this new popular sport. Learn

Ages 6 - 10 | Chloe Cook Students will learn cheer routines and be able to perform the routine for parents at the end of the 8 weeks. Sessions will focus on learning cheers, basic form, and techniques. Students will receive a set of pom poms and a t-shirt. BITTY SOCCER (CO-ED)

Ages 4-6 (Must be 4 by Aug. 1, 2022) This program is a five-week introductory session to the sport of soccer. Participants will begin to understand the fundamental motor skills of soccer through drills, games and activities. The last week of the program will be designated as a scrimmage. ADULT SOFTBALL LEAGUES RECREATIONAL MEN’S/CO-ED SOFTBALL

This is an E-LEVEL softball league. The main focuses of this league is friendly competition, building camaraderie, and having fun! Coed Games are on Sunday evenings and Mens Games are Thursday nights. All games are played at Macken Park. Teams are required to provide their own game balls. Each team will play 8 double-header regular season games with an end of season tournament for a total of 10 games. Teams must pay a $50.00 non-refundable deposit to hold their spot.

DAGG PARK

MEMORIAL PARK

2000 Iron Street (21st Avenue between Howell and Iron Streets)

23rd Avenue between Iron and Howell Streets

This 5-acre park features interactive water play and an ocean theme without standing water, plus a rope play system for all ages.

PARK AMENITIES

• Two playgrounds, including designated areas for ages 2-5 and 5-12 • Two spraygrounds, including the Woods Fountain area for children up to 2 years old • Public restroom building and one family changing restroom • Park shelter available for rent. • Two picnic shelters are first come first serve. Each has an 8-foot table and a trash receptacle. No portable grills are allowed at any of the shelters.

MACKEN PARK 1002 Clark Ferguson Drive (Northeast corner of Clark Ferguson Drive and Howell Street) This 60-acre park is utilized for sports leagues, walking, picnicking and more.

The park commemorates the history of wars fought involving American citizens. A replica of the Statue of Liberty is located in Memorial Park.

WAGGIN’ TRAIL DOG PARK 432 E 32nd Avenue (32nd and Swift Avenues) This 4.7 acre off-leash dog park is a partnership between the City of North Kansas City and the City of Kansas City, Missouri. There are separate areas for large and small dogs, and each area features a paved walking trail and multiple obstacles.

Rental Information MACKEN AND DAGG PARK SHELTER RENTALS REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT: Festival Shelter requires a $100 refundable deposit, while all other shelters require a $50 refundable deposit. REFUND POLICY: There Will Be No Refunds For Cancellations, Including Inclement Weather. There is a fee of $25.00 for any changes made to your reservation.

Reservations must be made in person at the Parks and Recreation Center. Shelter reservations begin March 1st. The Festival Shelter can be reserved a year in advance.

SHELTER RULES: 1. Applicant is responsible for leaving the facilities in clean and presentable condition. Please use receptacles for trash. 2. 3. 4. 5.

No adhesives and metal fasteners of any kind (tape, staples, tacks, etc.) on ANY structures in the park, including shelters. Pinatas, confetti, silly string, and water balloons are prohibited. City ordinance #3883 prohibits all alcoholic beverages, including beer, on park property, which includes parking area. All unauthorized vehicles, commercial and private, are prohibited beyond the designated areas, thus all picnic, sports equipment, etc., must be carried to the picnic areas and ball diamonds unless preapproved. 6. Pop up tents, canvassed coverings, or any form of tables and chairs outside the shelter area must be secured by support weights and preapproved by the Parks Director. 7. Music may be played at shelter at a reasonable level. 8. Rentals that include, but not limited to: walk/run events, DJ or Band, inflatables may require additional permits.

PARKS AND RECREATION CENTER RENTALS Nestled in the beautiful landscape of North Kansas City’s Macken Park, we offer a serene environment with a contemporary look, stone fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling windows, overlooking our premiere terrace and the lush green grounds of the park. Our facility also features a drop-down screen and projector and a state-of-the-art sound system for sharing presentations, videos and photos with your guests.

All rentals require a 2-hour minimum and a $100 refundable deposit. Remember to include set up and tear down in your rental time.
