TABLE OF CONTENTS A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR The beginning of 2020 has been a difficult time for our nation and community. With social distancing requirements in place, we are all experiencing a lack of recreational activities and programs and limited social interactions. To lift your spirits and keep you engaged, North Kansas City Parks and Recreation has developed our Recreation Round-Up. Every day, Monday through Friday, at 11 a.m., we share something on our Facebook page. Each day has a different theme, including arts, crafts, nature, storytimes and sometimes even live feeds of national parks. This online recreational service is a safe and easy way for us to connect with you during social distancing. Recreation Round-Up assists individuals and families in finding an outlet to be creative, have fun in your home or yard, and let your mind wander. We believe our new online program is an essential service for our community’s well-being during this worldwide crisis, and we hope you will join us in participating in these activities throughout the summer while our community and country gradually reopen. In addition to Recreation Round-Up, we invite you to celebrate Parks to Kids Day with us virtually on May 16. The National Parks Trust started Kids to Parks Day in 2011 to engage kids in a day of outdoor exploration at parks and public lands across the country. This year, we’re flipping the experience and bringing the parks to you through social media. See the purple box below for our Facebook page information. We hope you’ll join us for these distance experiences to get through these unusual times, and we look forward to seeing you in our parks, classes and events when we can gather again.

Staff highlight: Pam Linder, Park Maintenance Pam started with North Kansas City Parks and Recreation as a part-time employee in July 1998. During Pam’s part-time tenure, she developed a passion for Macken Park and its patrons and, in October 2000, was promoted to full time. During Pam’s 20-plus years with the department, she has seen and been a part of multiple changes and growth throughout the park system. Pam has played a role in modifying the park and shelter rules as she is out and engaged with our community every shift. Pam takes pride in her work. Her passion is keeping the ground of our parks beautiful and ensuring our patrons have a wonderful experience. When you see Pam out in the parks, please take a moment to thank her for her years of service and dedication to the department.

ART IN NATURE

DYEING WITH INDIGO

This class is designed around exploring the nearby park and drawing outside every day. If you’d like to get better at drawing your surroundings and nature, this class is for you. Students will be drawing and painting with different mediums. Parents are encouraged to have students bring some of their favorite dry media supplies as well as sunscreen and water bottles to class every day.

Discover the magic of indigo blue in this intensive textile arts workshop. Participants will learn all about indigo, a natural dye made from plants – where it comes from, how it works, and how it can be used in art. In this workshop, we will learn various resist techniques including shibori and tie-dye. Participants will leave with a sampling of their own hand-dyed patterns.

ANIMAL ARCHITECTS

Let your imagination run wild with tens of thousands of LEGO® parts as we design and build leaping dolphins, buzzing beehives, and towering giraffes. Play, create, and learn in a world inspired by the animal kingdom. Design and build as never before and explore your craziest ideas.

This class is for students who are interested and invested in learning to draw digital media. The class will explore the basics of Photoshop and how to apply these techniques used in and outside the classroom. Learn all about layers, transforming, and color balance in this class. Participants will need to bring laptop or tablet for class that has space to add Photoshop.

FROM REAL LIFE TO CANVAS

During this week-long art class, kids will work towards one final project. We will begin by using photography, photographing the “real world” around us. We will then learn how to take the photos and transfer them onto a canvas like the old masters would. Each day we will spend time drawing in a sketchbook, introducing some art history, looking at a different artist or style of art, while working on the completion of our final project: a painting. A class for students who are familiar with digital media and are looking to take their skills to the next level. Sports FALL YOUTH BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL North Kansas City Parks & Recreation youth sports programs are NON-COMPETITIVE leagues. The programs emphasize skill development, learning the rules of the game, playing as a team, sportsmanship, and most importantly to have FUN! Children may register with one “buddy” for youth team sports. BOTH registration forms must be received along with the registration fee for each child at the same time. If you are new to the NKC Sports Program, you will be placed on a team by the NKC Parks & Recreation staff.

T-BALL (CO-ED) Ages 4-6 by May 1

T-ball is the foundation of every future baseball/softball player’s career. Teams focus on understanding the basics of the game, having fun and making new friends. Our goal is for each child to learn the correct skills for batting, throwing and catching to encourage their passion for baseball/softball.

In addition to our popular co-ed baseball teams, we are now offering a girls’ softball program. This program was created to provide a beginner level program for girls.

KID PITCH

Ages 10-12 by May 1 Kid Pitch baseball is the final step in our recreation program toward preparing players for competitive play. Players are introduced to other players pitching and incorporate all their skills from batting, throwing and fielding. Your child will completely understand the essence of baseball/ softball after completing the season. All practices and games are held at Macken Park. ADULT SOFTBALL LEAGUES These are D-LEVEL softball leagues. These leagues focuses on friendly competition, building camaraderie and having fun! All games are played at Macken Park. Teams are required to provide their own game balls. Each team will play 8 double-header regular season games and an end-of-season tournament. Teams must pay a $50 non-refundable deposit to hold their spot. Don’t have a team? Give us a call for single player registration!

Ages 3-5 Bitty Athletes is a four-week introductory session that will cover the most popular sports (football, soccer, baseball and more!). Little athletes will learn the basics and fundamentals of each sport. We will work on overall hand-eye coordination, balance, athleticism and having fun!

Ages 3-5 Get your preschooler mentally and physically active with this four-week program. We will play games to get your preschooler moving and having fun! Each week we will listen and dance to music that will develop gross motor skills, play games like noodle tag, navigate through obstacle courses, and enjoy yummy snacks!

BITTY SOCCER (CO-ED)

Ages 3-5 (Must be 3 by Aug. 1) This program is a five-week introductory session to the sport of soccer. Participants will begin to understand the fundamental motor skills of soccer through drills, games and activities. The last week of the program will be designated as a scrimmage. This 5-acre park features interactive water play and an ocean theme without standing water, plus a rope play system for all ages.

PARK AMENITIES

• Two playgrounds, including designated areas for ages 2-5 and 5-12 • Two spraygrounds, including the Woods Fountain area for children up to 2 years old • Public restroom building and one family changing restroom • Park shelter available for rent. • Two picnic shelters are first come first serve. Each has an 8-foot table and a trash receptacle. No portable grills are allowed at any of the shelters.

MACKEN PARK 1002 Clark Ferguson Drive (Northeast corner of Clark Ferguson Drive and Howell Street) This 60-acre park is utilized for sports leagues, walking, picnicking and more.

The park commemorates the history of wars fought involving American citizens. A replica of the Statue of Liberty is located in Memorial Park.

WAGGIN’ TRAIL DOG PARK 432 E 32nd Avenue (32nd and Swift Avenues) This 4.7 acre off-leash dog park is a partnership between the City of North Kansas City and the City of Kansas City, Missouri. There are separate areas for large and small dogs, and each area features a paved walking trail and multiple obstacles.

WHEEL PARK Southwest corner of Clark Ferguson Drive and Ozark Street Just south of Macken Park, Wheel Park offers a paved, half-mile roller-blading and bike trail.

Rental Information SHELTER RENTALS We begin accepting reservations for residents and non-residents March 2. We do not provide refunds for any reason, including inclement weather. SHELTER RULES ALL SHELTERS MUST BE CLEANED UP AND VACATED AT 9:00 PM These rules apply to ALL shelter usage. Anyone violating any of the rules will be asked to leave the premises. If you do not vacate the premises, you may be subject to p rosecution for trespassing (City ordinance #9.28.020). This applies to reserved and walk-up users. 1. ALL USERS OR GROUPS are expected to leave the facility in a clean and presentable condition. Please use provided receptacles for trash and food. Clean up all debris dropped on the concrete surface and around the shelter grounds. Remove all personal belongings.

PROHIBITED ITEMS • Piñatas, confetti, silly string and water ballons: These are hard to clean up and toxic for animals and the environment.

2. Your use of the shelter is limited to your reserved block of time. You must vacate the premises when your reserved time is over. 3. A $25 INFLATABLE PERMIT is required for use of any type of inflatable or bounce house at a Macken Park shelter. Inflatables of any type are not allowed at Dagg Park. 4. A SPECIAL USE PERMIT must be submitted 45 days prior to the proposed special event for approval from the Parks and Recreation Director. A Special Use Permit is required for events including but not limited to: organized walk/run events; weddings; DJs or bands; food vendors preparing and serving food on-site; more than two inflatables or carnival games. Permit applications can be found at www.nkc.org. 5. Pop-up tents, canvas coverings, or any form of tables and chairs are not allowed outside the concrete patio of the shelter. If a pop-up tent or canvas covering is used, support weights are required to keep the structure secure. Approval from the Parks and Recreation Director is required if you seek additional tables and chairs outside the shelter. 6. Public address systems, loud speakers, DJs, bands and similar apparatus require permission from the Parks and Recreation Director. Music may be played at the shelter at a reasonable level. If it can be heard by anyone outside of your party you may be asked to turn it down. If you fail to comply you will be asked to turn it off.

• Adhesives and metal fasteners of any kind (tape, staples, tacks, etc.) on ANY structures in the park, including shelters • Grills of any type (Dagg Park only) • Alcoholic beverages: City ordinance #9.24.010 prohibits all alcoholic beverages, including beer, on park property including parking lots. Violators will be asked to vacate the premises immediately by park staff; failure to comply will result in prosecution for trespassing and violating park rules. • All unauthorized vehicles, commercial and private, are prohibited beyond designated areas. All equipment (picnic, sports, etc.) must be carried.
