A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR With the challenges we have faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Parks and Recreation has continued to serve the community of North Kansas City to the best of its abilities while making every attempt to keep our residents and community safe. With the fall and winter season fast approaching, we must consider how to maintain programs and services while practicing social distancing. We have made modifications or cancelled some of our events this season as we are considering the safety and welfare of our patrons and community. In place of our annual Halloween in the Park event, we will have Mystery Boxes for families of 4 or 6 (see ad on page 9 for details). Mayor’s Tree will consist of a virtual viewing via Facebook Live of the Mayor lighting the tree, holiday themed music, and a reading from Santa.

A beautiful winter back drop will be set-up for families to come and take pictures throughout the holiday season.

Parks and Recreation is striving to bring creative, innovative, hands on art, technology, cooking, and wood working classes to you. Check out pages 2-4 for all our youth programs and pages 5-7 for adult programs. Safety is priority for our patrons who attend one or many of these classes. Temperature check is taken when you enter the facility, social distancing is practiced, face mask worn at all times, and proper sanitization throughout the class.

I love teaching, and I love working with the folks at North Kansas City Parks and Recreation Center. My office (The University of Missouri Extension – Clay County) has partnered with the Parks and Recreation Center for many years, and has put on all types of programming. Primarily, I teach art camps that focus on painting and drawing classes. I also help plan the Arts in the Park festivals in conjunction with the Recreation Center. I teach today because the Arts help open people’s access and understanding of the world to math, science, and, most importantly, ourselves.

Get your preschooler active mentally and physically with this 4 – week program. We will play games to get your preschooler moving and having fun! Each week we will listen and dance to music that will develop gross motor skills, play games like noodle tag, navigate through obstacle courses, and enjoy yummy snacks!

Bitty Athletes is a four – week introductory session that will cover the most popular sports (football, soccer, baseball, hockey and more!) Players will learn the basics and fundamentals of each sport. We will work on overall hand – eye coordination, balance, athleticism and having fun!

A class for students that would like to improve their skills with acrylics, gouache, watercolors, and mixed media. Every week students will get to work on a fun after school project and that will increase their skills in painting in any type of medium.

Youth will rotate in groups to experience different programs 4-H has to offer. Project Spotlight will offer a taste of different project activity opportunities in 4-H with a variety of mini project make & takes. Soccer for Success will help children establish healthy habits and develop critical life skills through trained coach – mentors.

NURTURE NATURE CLOVER KIDS

ABCS OF ZINES

Discover the interactions in the world around us through weather experiments, flora and fauna investigations, and entomology observations. Campers will take a “hike” on a sidewalk field trip, create habitats, read stories and make healthy snacks together during this mini – day camp adventure.

In this course students will discover the unique DIY self – publishing method by creating their own booklet of original art and writing. We will discuss the cultural impact of zines, look at examples, and learn methods of replication and binding.

Thursday’s after school it’s time to get spooky! All throughout the month of October this after school club will make a fall or Halloween inspired painting every Thursday. HOLIDAY GIFTS

This after school club will focus on the basics of Color theory and how to capture them in the iPad program Procreate. We will learn how to use layers and explore colors through all kinds of techniques. This class will be for students that want to focus on developing color in their work or students who just want to explore. Parents recommended to bring portable laptop and/or tablet for class if already owned.

This 5 – acre park features interactive water play and an ocean theme without standing water, plus a rope play system for all ages.

PARK AMENITIES

• Two playgrounds, including designated areas for ages 2 – 5 and 5 – 12 • Two spraygrounds, including the Woods Fountain area for children up to 2 years old • Public restroom building and one family changing restroom • Park shelter available for rent.

• Two picnic shelters are first come first serve. Each has an 8 – foot table and a trash receptacle. No portable grills are allowed at any of the shelters.

MACKEN PARK 1002 Clark Ferguson Drive (Northeast corner of Clark Ferguson Drive and Howell Street) This 60 – acre park is utilized for sports leagues, walking, picnicking and more.

The park commemorates the history of wars fought involving American citizens. A replica of the Statue of Liberty is located in Memorial Park.

WAGGIN’ TRAIL DOG PARK 432 E 32nd Avenue (32nd and Swift Avenues) This 4.7 acre off – leash dog park is a partnership between the City of North Kansas City and the City of Kansas City, Missouri. There are separate areas for large and small dogs, and each area features a paved walking trail and multiple obstacles.

WHEEL PARK Southwest corner of Clark Ferguson Drive and Ozark Street Just south of Macken Park, Wheel Park offers a paved, half – mile roller – blading and bike trail.

PARKS AND RECREATION CENTER RENTALS Nestled in the beautiful landscape of North Kansas City’s Macken Park, we offer a serene environment with a contemporary look, stone fireplace, and floor to ceiling windows, overlooking our premiere terrace and the lush green grounds of the park. Our facility also features a projector, screen, and sound system for sharing presentations, videos and photos with your guests.

DUE TO COVID, MAXIUM RENTAL CAPACITY, 50 PEOPLE. MASKS ARE REQUIRED.

All rentals require a 2 hour minimum. Include set up and tear down in your rental time.
