TABLE OF CONTENTS Summer is always the time of year where you want to get your feet wet, run through the grass and enjoy great food, friends and family. This summer North Kansas City Parks and Recreation has all those things going on! You don’t want to miss out. Dagg Park will open for the summer season on Saturday, May 27, at 10:00 a.m. We will host our once-a-month Friday Night Concerts in June, July and August. New this summer is Arts in the Park, June 9 and 10, a fine arts event where art vendors will have their merchandise for sale, beer garden, food trucks, musical entertainment and so much more. Check out pages 11-15 for more information on all our fun events we will be hosting this summer at Macken Park. Construction is underway with the new Parks and Recreation Center. The Parks and Recreation Board is really pleased with the design of the facility. The department is ecstatic with programming and event capabilities the new facility will allow us to offer the residents of North Kansas City.

ARCIMBOLDO - FRUIT AND VEGETABLE PORTRAITS AGES 4-12 | HEATHER COLLINSWORTH

Students will learn about the life and art of Giuseppe Arcimboldo. Students will create works of art inspired by artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo - a man who used fruits and vegetables to create art. COOKING MATTERS

Cooking Matters is a five session course that combines hands-on cooking experience with nutrition education. Students will learn and practice basic cooking skills, and safety in the kitchen. Students will learn about Canadian Artist Teodoro Dragonieri who creates works of art on repurposed items, such as shoes! Then we will learn about what mixed media art is and ways to create it. Students will have an art adventure outside! We will learn about plein air painting and drawing. Students will then get to sketch a scene they see outside. Once we have finished that, we will create mixed media sculptures on poster board out of objects found in nature. Class will be held at Macken Park Shelter 6. MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DAY CAMP

AGES 6-13 | ENGINEERING FOR KIDS

During our Mechanical Engineering camp, students use the engineering design process to design, create, test, and refine a variety of machines. They construct a rollercoaster, create their own catapult, and assemble and race a dragster. They will learn about friction, the laws of motion, and aerodynamics all while having fun! Dig into engineering with big trucks, construction vehicles and super machines. Explore the engineering terms, concepts and vocabulary behind large scale building machines. Build and learn about steamrollers, bulldozers, wrecking balls, tower cranes and more while building with your favorite building system LEGO®. Have you watched battle bots on tv? Here is your chance to make your own bot and compete against other students? Our Play-Well Engineering instructors guide students in this advanced Play-Well engineering camp, as they re-engineer standard vehicles into mechanized machines that can traverse challenging obstacles, battle against fellow bots, and take on Play-Well Instructors’ colossal creations. YOUTH programs TIE DYE PILLOWCASES AGES 4-12 | HEATHER COLLINSWORTH

We will take a trip to Asia in our lesson on dyeing fabric! Students will learn about Asian cultures that have dyed fabric for centuries. We will then learn how to dye our own fabric to create a pillow case to take home. We will be doing this activity outside - please wear old clothes for this activity. *Students will go home with an instruction sheet to finish their project...dye must set over night and then be washed out in the washer or in the sink. POP ART - ANDY WARHOL AGES 4-12 | HEATHER COLLINSWORTH

FROM REAL LIFE TO CANVAS ART CAMP

AGES 8-16 | GK CALLAHAN & MU EXTENSION

During this week-long art class, kids will work towards one final project. We will begin by photographing the “real world” around us. Then, we will learn how to transfer the photos onto a canvas like the old masters would. Each day we will spend time drawing in a sketchbook, introducing some art history, looking at a different artist or style of art, while working on the completion of our final project: a

painting. We will spend a majority of the time together, learning techniques around drawing and painting. During the day, we will also get a visit by a nutrition specialist from the University of Missouri who will teach us about healthy eating and provide an afternoon snack. THE ART OF ORIGAMI AGES 4-12 | HEATHER COLLINSWORTH

Students will learn about origami, the art of folding paper, and Japan, the country most associated with origami. DRAMA KIDS INTERNATIONAL

AGES 6-13 | VANESSA DAVIS

Students will have a blast learning all of the ingredients that create the art of drama including characters, timing, stretching, communicating, costumes, set-design, movement with music, empathy, improv, and imagination. Instructor Vanessa Davis has been involved in theatre and film since the age of eight. She is a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and is a member of SAG-AFTRA and Actors’ Equity Association. There will be a parent presentation on the last day of camp. THE ART OF HENRY MATISSE

Students will learn about the life and art of Henry Matisse. Matisse was a famous painter who, later in life when he could no longer paint, created mixed media cut paper art that became some of his best selling work. PIET MONDRIANINSPIRED PAINTING AGES 4-12 | HEATHER COLLINSWORTH

Students will learn about the life and art of Dutch artist Piet Mondrian. His work focused on geometric abstraction. Students will learn how this art form influenced architecture as well as art, and will use what we have learned to make our own geometric abstract works of art. LEONARDO DAVINCI ROBOTS AGES 4-12 | HEATHER COLLINSWORTH

Students will learn about the life and times of Leonardo DaVinci - the artist and inventor! We will learn about the robot invention that was discovered in DaVinci’s sketchbook, along with sketches of a tank and a helicopter - long before they were ever invented. Vision cards will guide students to the life they desire, a creative life filled with energy and true enjoyment. Students will create one for many different aspects of themselves: spiritual self, health, wealth, family, friends, travel, creative life, whatever is important to them. Vision cards are fun and easy to make; no artistic skills required! Each student will make 5-10 cards using collage, doodling, stenciling, and paint. Are you new to food preservation? Not sure where to start? Pickling is a great way to get comfortable with food preservation. In this class, we will learn to pickle a variety of vegetables. The class provides up-to-date, research-based procedural recommendations, tested recipes, and hands-on workshops that assist the consumer in safely preserving produce and other products. SPORTS leagues YOUTH LEAGUES North Kansas City Parks & Recreation youth sports programs are non-competitive leagues. The programs emphasize skill development; learning the rules of the game, playing as a team, sportsmanship, and most importantly having FUN! All practices and games are held at Macken Park. Children may register with one “buddy” for youth team sports. BOTH registration forms must be received along with the registration fee for each child at the same time. If you are new to the NKC sports program, you will be placed on a team by the NKC Parks & Recreation staff.

Coed games are on Sunday evenings. All games are played at Macken Park. Teams are required to provide their own game balls. Hours of Operation: 10 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. daily Park Rules 1. In the event of an emergency, call 911 or use the Emergency Call Box located on the exterior wall of the family changing room. 2. There is no attendant on duty; use at your own risk. 3. Vacate the premises immediately when there are any signs of thunder, lightning, or severe weather. 4. Bathing suits or swim trunks are required for all spray ground users. 5. Children who are not toilet trained are required to wear a swim diaper or rubber pants without a diaper. 6. Parental or guardian (18 years or older) supervision is required for all children ages 13 years and younger. 7. Any person with open sores, cuts or obvious skin or body infections is not permitted on or in the spray ground. 8. Be considerate of others. All participants of the spray ground must conduct themselves in a courteous, safe, and familyoriented manner.

WAGGIN′ TRAIL OFF-LEASH DOG PARK 432 EAST 32ND AVENUE

A partnership between the City of North Kansas City, Missouri and City of Kansas City, Missouri

Waggin’ Trail Off-Leash Dog Park is 4.70 acres, with designated areas for small dogs (less than 30 lbs.) and large dogs (more than 30 lbs.). Park Rules 1. All Park patrons must comply with the park rules as stated. Persons failing to comply with the rules may be subject to a formal complaint filed with the North Kansas City Police Department. Persons asked to leave the park premises who do not comply may be subject to prosecution for trespassing. 2. Off-leash dog areas are for dogs and their handlers. No animals other than dogs shall be permitted in the areas. No other use is permitted, including skateboard, bicycles, scooters, strollers and rollerblades. 3. Handlers must “scoop the poop” and dispose of waste in designated Park provided container. (Ordinance 6.12.120) 4. To create a positive experience for you and your dog, make sure your dog knows how to appropriately socialize with other dogs before using the Park. 5. Dog owners assume all risk related to the use of the Dog Park. The Cities of North Kansas City or Kansas City shall not be liable for any injury or damage caused by dogs or handlers. Handlers are responsible for any injuries caused by dog(s) under their control. 6. Dogs that exhibit aggressive behavior are not allowed in the park. Dogs must be removed immediately from park at the first sign of aggression. (Ordinance 6.12.090) 7. Dogs in the Small Dog area are to be less than 30 pounds. No dogs under the age of 4 months are allowed. All dogs exceeding 30 pounds are required to use the Large Dog area.

Female dogs in heat and dogs with fresh wounds are not allowed in the Dog Park. (Ordinance 6.12.100) All dogs must be current on their vaccinations along with displaying current tag on a collar or harness. (Ordinance 6.12.020) SPIKED COLLARS ARE NOT ALLOWED. All animal to human bites must be reported to the City of North Kansas City Animal Control Department immediately. (Ordinance 6.16.020) Dogs must be on leash, a maximum length of 6 feet, when entering and exiting the off-leash dog areas. Handlers must have possession of the dog leash at all times. No dogs are allowed within the off-leash area while restrained by a leash. Children 5 and under are not allowed in the off-leash dog areas. Children 6 – 15 must be accompanied by an adult and handlers must be a minimum of 16 years of age. Dogs must be under voice control of their handler and in view of their handler at all times. Only 2 dogs are allowed per handler. Handlers must repair all holes and damage done by their dog under their supervision. Park Hours of Operation are 6AM to Sunset or 9PM whichever comes first.

PARKS MEMORIAL PARK

Located at 716 East 23rd Avenue adjacent to the North Kansas City High School. The park is defined by a street meridian and contains several features commemorating the history of wars fought involving American citizens. A replica of the Statue of Liberty is located in Memorial Park.

Located at 1002 East 27th Avenue, at the corners of Clark Ferguson Drive and Howell Street. Macken Park is home to many varied park activities. This 60-acre park is utilized for sports leagues, walking, picnicking and several forms of recreation.
