A note from the director’s desk We are looking forward to what 2019 has in store for the community of North Kansas City. The Parks and Recreation Board and staff are working diligently to enhance our enrichment classes and events throughout the year. We will host our annual Winter Princess Formal on January 25. For more information and to register please go to nkc-webtrac.nkc.org. Macken Park will host the Second Annual Bob Libbey Invitational Pickleball Tournament the weekend of April 12-14. Mr. Libbey was passionate about pickleball, and we’ve named our tournament is his honor. This year we’re hoping for spring weather and lots of participating teams. The Parks and Recreation Board approved in November 2018 to change the shelter rules and reservation policy for Macken and Dagg Park. These changes were made to ensure that the integrity of the parks grounds and amenities continue to operate at the highest quality possible our staff can provide.

NEW SHELTER RULES The Parks and Recreation Board approved changes to the shelter rules and reservation policy for Macken and Dagg Parks in November 2018. These rules apply to all users of the shelters, both those who make a reservation and those who use an unreserved shelter in a walk-up capacity. All reservations require a $50 refundable deposit. The deposit will be refunded if all shelter rules are observed during the reservation. The rules will be posted at the shelter, online and provided to you when you make your reservation. The new rules become effective on March 1, 2019. All reservations must be made in person at the Parks and Recreation Center, 1201 Clark Ferguson Dr., North Kansas City, MO 64116, and can only be made during designated times: 8:00 am-12:00 pm, 12:30 pm – 4:30 pm, 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm. The Festival Shelter will no longer be available for walk-up use. Reservations are required. All shelters must be cleaned up and vacated at 9:00 pm. Anyone violating any of the rules will be asked to leave the premises. If you do not vacate the premises, you may be subject to prosecution for trespassing. This applies to reserved and walk-up users.

FROM REAL LIFE TO CANVAS ART CAMP
Does your little chef like to be in the kitchen with mom or dad making their favorite treats? We will teach them simple recipes and how to clean up the mess!
We will use photography to capture the “real world” around us, then use our photos to inspire our painting. We will draw in a sketchbook and learn about different artists and art styles. A nutrition specialist from the University of Missouri will teach us about healthy eating and provide a snack each day. Bring a sack lunch and your creativity!

Youth Leagues North Kansas City Parks & Recreation youth sports programs are NON-COMPETITIVE leagues. The programs emphasize skill development, learning the rules of the game, playing as a team, sportsmanship, and most importantly to have FUN! All practices and games are held at Macken Park. Children may register with one “buddy” for youth team sports. BOTH registration forms must be received along with the registration fee for each child at the same time. If you are new to the NKC Sports Program, you will be placed on a team by the NKC Parks & Recreation staff.

This is a D-LEVEL softball league. This league focuses on friendly competition, building camaraderie and having fun! Games are on Sunday evenings. All games are played at Macken Park. Winner(s) of the tournament will receive a $100 gift card. Teams may pay a $50 non-refundable deposit to hold their spot. All fees must be paid by March 2. Ages 7-14 | Macken Park Diamond #1 Major League Baseball Pitch Hit & Run is a FREE event that tests three of the most fundamental aspects of baseball and softball – Pitching, Hitting and Running: PITCH: Participant is tested throwing strikes to a designated Strike Zone target. HIT: Participant hits a ball off a stationary tee for distance and accuracy. RUN: Participant is timed, starting from second base, touching third then touching home plate. All of the events are individually scored and converted to a total point score through the use of conversion tables. Participants will compete in each of the three components of Major league Baseball Pitch Hit & Run and accumulate total score based on his/her performance. This 5-acre park features interactive water play and an ocean theme without standing water, plus a rope play system for all ages.

The park commemorates the history of wars fought involving American citizens. A replica of the Statue of Liberty is located in Memorial Park.

Rental Information The Cabana The Cabana Hawaiian shaved ice will return for a second year for North Kansas City residents and visitors. The Parks and Recreation Department is working closely with The Cabana to offer easy access to the best Hawaiian shaved ice in Kansas City. The truck will be located along the west side of the parking lot off Clark Ferguson Dr., next to the handball courts. Make sure to stop by and meet the amazing owners, Cristian and Angie Maciel; they know how to make you feel like family! The Cabana will open on Saturday, April 21, 2019, weather permitting. Hours of operation: Monday-Friday, 5:00 pm – 9:30 pm, Saturday & Sunday: 3:00 pm – 9:30 pm

Parks and Recreation Center Rentals Nestled in the beautiful landscape of North Kansas City’s Macken Park, we offer a serene environment with a contemporary look, stone fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling windows, overlooking our premiere terrace and the lush green grounds of the park. Our facility also features a drop-down screen and projector and a state-of-the-art sound system for sharing presentations, videos and photos with your guests. All rentals require a 2-hour minimum. Remember to include set up and tear down in your rental time.
