A note from the director’s desk

This winter, the Parks and Recreation Board completed a Capital Improvement Project on baseball/softball Field #2 and #3 at Macken Park. Work was completed to enhance the quality of play: new field dirt, proper alignment of bases, dugout reconfiguration and padded back stops.

The new Parks and Recreation Center opened to the public on Monday, January 29, 2018. The facility has so many wonderful things to offer the community from programs, special events and rental space for your special celebration. Please see page 13 for pricing and room options. Our new facility allows us to host all of our “Encore,” youth and adult Enrichment classes from make-and-take art, glutenfree cooking, preschool parties, summer camps and so much more. We will celebrate our Second Annual Arts in the Park, Friday and Saturday, June 8-9, 2018 at Macken Park. This year’s event will include fine artists and makers, plus a fantastic line up of entertainment, food vendors and a beer garden supported by local breweries. As part of the event, we will host The Elders Friday, June 8, 6:00 pm, as one of the last stops of their farewell tour. See the back cover for the schedule and more information. North Kansas City Parks and Recreation offers a wide variety of programs and events throughout the year, so keep an eye out for what we have coming up in 2018. ROBOTICS USING THE LEGO EV3 SYSTEM Ages 9-13 | Play-well TEKnologies

Build and program robots inspired by a galaxy far, far away using the LEGO® WeDo® system! Lift an X-Wing from Dagobah swamp, program a droidsorting factory, and land an Imperial Shuttle using motion sensors. In small groups, learn basic programming, engineering, and robotics concepts in a fun Jedi-themed environment.

TEEN ART CAMP

Ages 13-18 | Heather Collinsworth This week long art camp is designed for teens who want to pursue additional art education. This art camp will help artists explore different art mediums, including drawing, painting, multi- media art and sculpture, focusing on the art medium that the campers enjoy most. Each student will complete two art projects during the week, and one of their projects will be chosen to be on display at Paper Birch Landing Gallery for a month following the camp.

SUMMER IMAGINATION ART CAMP Ages 6-12 | Heather Collinsworth

Join us for a 5-day Summer Imagination Art Camp. This multi-media art camp invites campers to explore, imagine and discover art in unique new ways! Artists are invited to experiment with a variety of art materials and styles, which encourages creative thinking and problem solving. Projects include painting, drawing, sewing, dying, printmaking and performance art! One project from each student will be selected at the end of the camp, to hang for a month at the Paper Birch Landing Gallery in Northtown.

CLOVER KIDS CAMP: MISSION 4-H

Ages 5-7 | MU Extension, Clay County Extension Staff, 4-H youth leaders and 4-H adult volunteers Clay County 4-H and North Kansas City Parks and Recreation are partnering to host a week-long day camp for 5-7 year olds. Campers will experience a wide variety of activities. Campers will have mini-missions each day around topics such as health/nutrition, art, nature, robotics and much more. This camp is open to all youth regardless of their enrollment in 4-H. Snacks will be provided. Campers need to bring their own lunch each day. Camp will be held at Macken Park Festival Shelter.

FROM REAL LIFE TO CANVAS

Ages 8-16 | GK Callahan, MU Extension During this week-long art class, we will use photography to capture the “real world” around us. We will learn how to take photos and then transfer them onto a canvas like the old masters would. Each day we will spend time drawing in a sketchbook, introducing some art history, studying a different artist or style of art, while working on the completion of our final project: a painting. We will spend a majority of our time learning drawing and painting techniques. We will also have a visit by a nutrition specialist from the University of Missouri who will teach us about healthy eating and provide an afternoon snack. Bring a sack lunch, and be ready to get creative!

Sports YOUTH LEAGUES North Kansas City Parks & Recreation youth sports programs are NON-COMPETITIVE leagues. The programs emphasize skill development, learning the rules of the game, playing as a team, sportsmanship, and most importantly to have FUN! All practices and games are held at Macken Park. Children may register with one “buddy” for youth team sports. BOTH registration forms must be received along with the registration fee for each child at the same time. If you are new to the NKC Sports Program, you will be placed on a team by the NKC Parks & Recreation staff.

LESSONS/CAMPS YOUTH & ADULT TENNIS LESSONS

Tennis is a great sport to stay active at any age. Come and learn the basics of tennis in this 4-week program. Beginning level courses will be learning how to score and play the game as well as the basics in serving and groundstrokes! Intermediate level courses will build on the fundamentals of the game as well as finding consistency in the game! Maximum 10 participants per class, so sign up fast! All lessons will be played at Macken Park, Courts 5 & 6.

PITCH, HIT AND RUN

Ages 7-14 | Macken Park Field #1 Major League Baseball Pitch Hit & Run is a FREE event that tests three of the most fundamental aspects of baseball/ softball -- pitching, hitting and running. PITCH: Participant is tested throwing strikes to a designated Strike Zone target. HIT: Participant hits a ball off a stationary tee for distance and accuracy. RUN: Participant is timed, starting from second base, touching third then touching home plate. All of the events are individually scored and converted to a total point score through the use of conversion tables. Participants will compete in each of the three components of Major League Baseball Pitch Hit & Run and accumulate a total score based on his/her performance. Winners will move on to Regionals and continued success can lead to a chance to compete in Nationals.

YOUTH ARCHERY CAMP Parks and Recreation Center

This camp will be a fun chance to learn how to properly shoot a bow and arrows. Participants will learn safety, proper form and practice on targets with a trained archer. After the completion of camp, everyone will have a better understanding of the fundamentals of archery and be able to use that knowledge outside of class competitively or recreationally. Participants need to bring a sack lunch.

This 5-acre park was renovated in 2016, and features interactive water play with an ocean theme without standing water.

PARK AMENITIES

• Two playgrounds, including designated areas for ages 2-5 and 5-12 • Two spraygrounds, including the Woods Fountain area for children up to 2 years old • Public restroom building and one family changing restroom • Park shelter available for rent. • Two picnic shelters are first come first serve. Each has an 8-foot table and a trash receptacle. No portable grills are allowed at any of the shelters.

MACKEN PARK 1002 Clark Ferguson Drive (Northeast corner of Clark Ferguson Drive and Howell Street) This 60-acre park is utilized for sports leagues, walking,s picnicking and more.

The park commemorates the history of wars fought involving American citizens. A replica of the Statue of Liberty is located in Memorial Park.

WAGGIN’ TRAIL DOG PARK 432 E 32nd Avenue (32nd and Swift Avenues) This 4.7 acre off-leash dog park is a partnership between the City of North Kansas City and the City of Kansas City, Missouri. There are separate areas for large and small dogs, and each area features a paved walking trail and multiple obstacles.

WHEEL PARK Southwest corner of Clark Ferguson Drive and Ozark Street Just south of Macken Park, Wheel Park offers a paved, half-mile roller-blading and bike trail.

All Macken Park shelter rentals are for 6 hours; all shelters have electricity and grills. Inflatable permit is an additional $25; Rental company must provide proof of insurance. Any parties interested in hosting a special event at Macken Park must submit a Special Event Usage Permit at least 45 days prior to the date of the event. Any reservation change will incur a $25 change fee.

SHELTER RULES 1. A Special Use Permit needs to be submitted 45 days prior to the event for approval. 2. Arrive at your reserved site within 15 minutes of the designated starting time. Failure to comply will result in forfeiture of your reservation. You must vacate the site at your designated ending time if another group is waiting to use the facility. 3. City ordinance #3883 prohibits all alcoholic beverages, including beer, on park property, which includes parking area. Violators are subject to arrest and prosecution. Groups not adhering to this regulation will have future reservation requests denied. 4. Public address systems, loud speakers, and similar apparatus are prohibited in the park unless permission is granted by the Parks and Recreation Board. Dance bands, orchestras, record hops, dance parties and similar activities are prohibited. 5. Pop up tents, canvassed coverings, or any form of tables and chairs are not allowed to

be brought in to parks for any reason unless you have approval from the Director. Special permission may be granted to set up these additional apparatus on a request basis. 6. All unauthorized vehicles, commercial and private, are prohibited beyond the designated areas, thus all picnic and sports equipment, etc., must be carried to the picnic areas and ball diamonds. 7. Applicant is responsible for leaving the facilities in clean and presentable condition. Please use receptacles for trash. 8. If the reservation is not used and not canceled, future reservations may not be approved. 9. There is no tape of any kind, metal fasteners (staples, tacks) allowed on any of our shelter structures. Failure to comply will result in loss of future reservations. 10. A person may reserve two shelters per visit.

PARKS AND RECREATION CENTER RENTALS Nestled in the beautiful landscape of North Kansas City’s Macken Park, we offer a serene environment with a contemporary look, stone fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling windows, overlooking our premiere terrace and the lush green grounds of the park. Our facility also features a drop-down screen and projector and a state-of-the-art sound system for sharing presentations, videos and photos with your guests. All rentals require a 2-hour minimum. Remember to include set up and tear down in your rental time.
