A note from the director’s desk

What a beautiful start to 2018 in North Kansas City Parks.

We had a fantastic turnout for our first-annual Bob Libbey Pickleball Tournament the weekend of April 13 despite the unusual weather.

The Second Annual Arts in the Park was held June 8-9.

There were amazing artists and makers, wonderful food vendors and incredible entertainment. Be sure to mark your calendar to join us next year, June 7-8, 2019. To keep up with event planning as it begins early next year, like us on Facebook @NKCArtsinthePark.

Cooking Matters is a six-session course that combines hands-on cooking experience with nutrition education.

In Fashion & Design, students learn how computer science and technology are used in the fashion industry while building fashion-themed programs, like a fashion walk, a stylist tool, and a pattern maker. The skill level for this class is moderate. Some knowledge of programming/ scratch will be helpful, but beginners are welcome as well.

VOLCANIC ART

It’s fizzy, explosive, super fun and colorful!

Come and be ready to get messy and work with science and art! We will create baking soda eruption prints. A volcano of color that ends up on paper to create a beautiful abstract piece of art! We will also have cutouts so that your piece can have a ballerina, soccer player, dog, cat and more! This class will be held at Macken Park and is messy. Parents need to be in attendance for this class.

ART JOURNAL OR DIARY

Join us for a night of journal making! You will learn how to construct and design your very own art journal/diary, from choosing the shape of your paper, making the front and back cover to making it into a book.

Famous artists always carry around an art journal and now you can learn to make one too!

Join us for this fun ceramic class where we will use polymer clay to make bead necklaces! We will set the polymer clay with the use of a toaster oven. All projects will be completed the night of class.

During this class, we will go on a walk at Macken Park and look at the trees in fall.

This fun, educational class will provide you with mindful awareness of your posture, breathing, and then activation, stability, and strengthening of your core muscles. The core muscles are the deep belly muscles, the back, and the gluteals (backside). We will work both in standing for posture, functional strength, balance, and flexibility then on the mat, concluding with everyone’s favorite part: a brief meditation.

A well-made stock, reduction and dressing are so important to a flavorful meal! This is a hands-on class to learn the variety of sauce making! Bring your aprons and your appetite!

FOOD PRESERVATION

DIABETES SELF MANAGEMENT

Participants in this class will learn tips to manage their type 2 diabetes. In this six-week class, participants will learn about symptom management, appropriate exercises for maintaining strength and mobility, healthy eating, appropriate medication and communication with your healthcare provider. Sports YOUTH LEAGUES

ADULT LEAGUES

North Kansas City Parks & Recreation youth sports programs are non-competitive leagues. The programs emphasize skill development, learning the rules of the game, playing as a team, sportsmanship, and most importantly to have fun! All practices and games are held at Macken Park.

FALL COED SOFTBALL

Children may register with one “buddy” for youth team sports. Both registration forms must be received along with the registration fee for each child at the same time.

If you are new to the NKC Sports Program, you will be placed on a team by the NKC Parks & Recreation staff.

BITTY SOCCER (COED)

3-5 Years Old (Must be 3 by August 1, 2018) This program is a five-week introductory session to the sport of soccer. Participants will begin to understand the fundamental motor skills of soccer through drills, games, and activities. The last week of the program will be designated as a scrimmage.

This 5-acre park features interactive water play and an ocean theme without standing water, plus a rope play system for all ages.

PARK AMENITIES

• Two playgrounds, including designated areas for ages 2-5 and 5-12 • Two spraygrounds, including the Woods Fountain area for children up to 2 years old • Public restroom building and one family changing restroom • Park shelter available for rent.

• Two picnic shelters are first come first serve. Each has an 8-foot table and a trash receptacle. No portable grills are allowed at any of the shelters.

The park commemorates the history of wars fought involving American citizens. A replica of the Statue of Liberty is located in Memorial Park.

WAGGIN’ TRAIL DOG PARK 432 E 32nd Avenue (32nd and Swift Avenues) This 4.7 acre off-leash dog park is a partnership between the City of North Kansas City and the City of Kansas City, Missouri. There are separate areas for large and small dogs, and each area features a paved walking trail and multiple obstacles.

WHEEL PARK Southwest corner of Clark Ferguson Drive and Ozark Street Just south of Macken Park, Wheel Park offers a paved, half-mile roller-blading and bike trail.

Inflatable permit is an additional $25; Rental company must provide proof of insurance.

Any parties interested in hosting a special event at Macken Park must submit a Special Event Usage Permit at least 45 days prior to the date of the event.

Any reservation change will incur a $25 change fee.

SHELTER RULES 1. A Special Use Permit needs to be submitted 45 days prior to the event for approval.

2. Arrive at your reserved site within 15 minutes of the designated starting time. Failure to comply will result in forfeiture of your reservation. You must vacate the site at your designated ending time if another group is waiting to use the facility.

3. City ordinance #3883 prohibits all alcoholic beverages, including beer, on park property, which includes parking area. Violators are subject to arrest and prosecution. Groups not adhering to this regulation will have future reservation requests denied.

4. Public address systems, loud speakers, and similar apparatus are prohibited in the park unless permission is granted by the Parks and Recreation Board. Dance bands, orchestras, record hops, dance parties and similar activities are prohibited.

5. Pop up tents, canvassed coverings, or any form of tables and chairs are not allowed to

be brought in to parks for any reason unless you have approval from the Director. Special permission may be granted to set up these additional apparatus on a request basis.

6. All unauthorized vehicles, commercial and private, are prohibited beyond the designated areas, thus all picnic and sports equipment, etc., must be carried to the picnic areas and ball diamonds.

7. Applicant is responsible for leaving the facilities in clean and presentable condition. Please use receptacles for trash.

8. If the reservation is not used and not canceled, future reservations may not be approved.

9. There is no tape of any kind, metal fasteners (staples, tacks) allowed on any of our shelter structures. No water balloons or piĂąatas.

Failure to comply will result in loss of future reservations.

10. A person may reserve two shelters per visit.

PARKS AND RECREATION CENTER RENTALS Nestled in the beautiful landscape of North Kansas City’s Macken Park, we offer a serene environment with a contemporary look, stone fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling windows, overlooking our premiere terrace and the lush green grounds of the park. Our facility also features a drop-down screen and projector and a state-of-the-art sound system for sharing presentations, videos and photos with your guests.

All rentals require a 2-hour minimum. Remember to include set up and tear down in your rental time.
