A note from the director’s desk

2018 is going to be an amazing year for North Kansas City Parks and Recreation. We will open our new Parks and Recreation Center to the community in early February. The Grand Opening and Ribbon cutting will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 1:00 pm. Please join us and tour our beautiful new facility, visit with Parks and Recreation staff, and learn about our programs, events, facility usage and volunteer opportunities. With the new facility, the department will roll out a new look for our Enrichment catalog and Senior Happenings. The Enrichment catalog will now be part of the city’s Connection publication that goes out to North Kansas City residents quarterly. You will continue to find the Enrichment catalog on the website and Facebook. Senior Happenings, our programming for active adults, is now called Encore: Where the second act of life is just a number. These exciting changes will allow us to better serve our community in 2018 and beyond. We hope you’ll join us for our outstanding programs and events for all ages. Have a blessed New Year!

Students will have a blast learning all of the ingredients that create the art of drama including characters, timing, stretching, communicating, costumes, set design, movement with music, empathy, improv and imagination. Instructor Vanessa Davis is a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and is a member of SAG-AFTRA and Actors’ Equity Association. There will be a parent presentation on the last day of camp. Snacks will be provided. Each participant receives a Drama Kids T-shirt.

Join us to learn about folk art around the world, with a focus on Brazilian folk art. Each child will create a 2-foot folk art animal to take home!

Youth Programs FAMILY & FRIENDS CPR

Ages 12+ | NKC Fire Department Staff Family & Friends CPR Course teaches the lifesaving skills of adult Hands-Only CPR, adult CPR with breaths, child CPR with breaths, adult and child AED use, infant CPR, and mild and severe airway block for adults, children, and infants. This course is recommended for child care providers and parents and grandparents of small children. Certification cards are not issued for this course.

FUNNY FACE CLAY SCULPTURES Ages 6-12 | Heather Collinsworth

Students will learn how to work with clay and how to do proper assemblage on the piece. They will learn about famous artists who work with ceramics and hear from a guest speaker who works in Kansas City. After the class, Miss Heather will take the pieces to her studio to fire them in the kiln. Students may pick up their pieces the next week at the Parks and Recreation Center.

FROM REAL LIFE TO THE CANVAS Ages 8-16 | MU Extension GK Calahan

During this week-long art camp participants will create multiple works of art. We will begin by photographing the “real world” around us and then we will learn how to take the photos and transfer them onto a canvas like the old masters did. Each day we will spend time drawing in a sketchbook, introducing some art history, looking at a different artist or style of art, while working on paintings. We will spend a majority of the time together, learning techniques around drawing and painting. Every day we will

Want to turn your art into a business? Get ready for some crafting and business 101 to prepare for your very own items to be sold at Arts in the Park, June 8-9! April classes will be split time between work time for your art and instruction on the business side. The May class will be an opportunity to touch base with everyone, answer questions and prepare for the vendor tent at Arts in the Park. Don’t have an idea of what to make, but want to learn? Don’t worry, we’ll have lots of ideas for you! Homework INCLUDED: Be prepared to spend the month creating and getting ready for Arts in the Park! AND THAT’S THE WAY IT WAS

This trip takes us through the world of TV and radio history with a look back at the lives of Walter Cronkite and Harry Truman, and recreates many of the events that made these two Missouri-born men famous. Our first stop is the Walter Cronkite Memorial on the campus of Missouri Western in St Joseph. We will watch our very own Ken Remmert in a recorded documentary playing Harry Truman. Then, we will tour the beautiful museum that includes a broadcast desk that Cronkite used, and many other things you have seen in his broadcasts will come to life. We will have lunch at the JC Wyatt House. We will end our history tour at the famous Patee House, which features rich history starting before the Civil War.

Sports YOUTH LEAGUES North Kansas City Parks & Recreation youth sports programs are NON-COMPETITIVE leagues. The programs emphasize skill development, learning the rules of the game, playing as a team, sportsmanship, and most importantly to have FUN! All practices and games are held at Macken Park. Children may register with one â€œbuddyâ€? for youth team sports. BOTH registration forms must be received along with the registration fee for each child at the same time. If you are new to the NKC Sports Program, you will be placed on a team by the NKC Parks & Recreation staff.

PRESCHOOL PLAYTIMES

Bitty Basketball is a 4-week instructional program. Participants will learn the basics of basketball through fun games and drills! We will work on ball-handling, shooting, defense, and fundamentals in a fun, interactive environment! Please bring a water bottle!

This program is a five-week introductory session to the sport of soccer. Participants will begin to understand the fundamental motor skills of soccer through drills, games, and activities. The last week of the program will be designated as a scrimmage game.

Get your preschoolers active mentally and physically with this 4-week program. We will play fun, new games and activities to get your preschooler moving and having fun! Each week we will have a different game to learn and play!

SPRING COED SOFTBALL

PITCH, HIT AND RUN

This is a D-LEVEL softball league. “D” leagues are for new teams and teams playing at a recreational level. Coed Games are on Sunday evenings. All games are played at Macken Park. Teams are required to provide their own game balls. Each team will play 8 double-header regular season games and an end of season tournament. Winner(s) of the tournament will receive championship t-shirts! Teams may pay a $50.00 non-refundable deposit to hold the spot and pay the rest of the fee by March 3. All fees must be paid by March 2 or the team will risk losing its spot. Activity #106001-01 Registration: February 5 - March 2 Fee: $400 per team

Ages 7-14 | Macken Park Field #1 Major League Baseball Pitch Hit & Run is a FREE event that tests three of the most fundamental aspects of baseball/ softball -- pitching, hitting and running. PITCH: Participant is tested throwing strikes to a designated Strike Zone target. HIT: Participant hits a ball off a stationary tee for distance and accuracy. RUN: Participant is timed, starting from second base, touching third then touching home plate. All of the events are individually scored and converted to a total point score through the use of conversion tables. Participants will compete in each of the three components of Major League Baseball Pitch Hit & Run and accumulate a total score based on his/her performance. Winners will move on to Regionals and continued success can lead to a chance to compete in Nationals.

Sports BOB LIBBEY PICKLEBALL INVITATIONAL

Ages 18+ | Macken Park Tennis/Pickleball Courts Men’s, Women’s, & Mixed Skill Tournament 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, & 5.0 Format: Main draw 2 out of 3 to 11 (win by 2) and consolation bracket 1 to 15 (win by 2). Tournament Director may combine brackets based on participation. Event will have Food Trucks and a Beer Garden for purchase.

LESSONS/CAMPS FAMILY FUN RUN PROGRAM

This 8-week program with MU Extension will help families prepare for a 5k race in June! All participants will learn about proper running techniques and health education as well as participate in actual running programs to help train. This is a fun family event for parents to do with their child while staying physically active and striving for a common goal!

YOUTH & ADULT TENNIS LESSONS

Tennis is a great sport to stay active at any age. Come and learn the basics of tennis in this 4-week program. Beginning level courses will be learning how to score and play the game as well as the basics in serving and groundstrokes! Intermediate level courses will build on the fundamentals of the game as well as finding consistency in the game! Maximum 10 participants per class, so sign up fast! All lessons will be played at Macken Park, Courts 5 & 6.
