Winter comfort food, take-out style

H

aving a treat of your favourite foods can certainly contribute to your happiness during a long winter. In a time when some of our usual activities have changed, good food is still important, but getting to some of our favourite places to eat out may not be as easy.

We are very lucky in Huron County and the surrounding area to have some amazing restaurants and eateries, but many of them have been struggling over the last few months with restrictions because of the pandemic, and winter will not be easy for them.

Some may have always had the option of take-out, but for others, it is a new chapter for their business and we wanted to celebrate a small selection and share a few hints to make that winter take-out experience even more enjoyable.

In the summer we all love to grab a favourite food and spread out a tablecloth on a picnic bench or under a shady tree, but this is not possible in the cold months. So, many of us will be taking food home to eat, or indulging in a car picnic.

Here are a few tips to make that a better experience.

Don’t put your cooler away! The same cooler you use for keeping things cold in the summer can also help to keep the food you pick up warm for the drive home. Even a clean cardboard box lined with a bit of newspaper will help to insulate the packages. Most take-out spots will have a plastic bag to carry your dishes, but as we move away from single-use plastics, maybe keep a couple of tea towels in the cooler to add insulation, catch any drips and then remove and launder when you get home. A good, old-fashioned hot water bottle will also help, tucked in next to the food, or just to warm up the cooler or box on the way to pick up your order. Another trick that works well if you are alone in the car on the pick-up run is to put the heated seat on for the passenger seat and place your food on there.

A winter picnic

Picnics aren’t just for summer Continued from page 6 restaurant has a wide range of excellent food from both its lunch and dinner menus and you can even order beer or wine to pair with your meal. www.eddingtons.ca Sometimes we do have glorious days in the middle of winter where you may want to eat in the great outdoors. So how about making up a picnic basket full of the extra items you might want for a snow day picnic? Pack a box, basket or bag with some extra dining essentials: napkins or paper towels and a few of your favourite condiments in reusable plastic. Just remember to take any of the liquid items back into the house after your picnic, as they might freeze and burst if left in the car. It's never a bad idea to carry some reusable cutlery and straws in the car, and by keeping a stock of them handy, you

are both reducing potential waste and your stress if some items are not with your order. Add small Thermos of warm water and a little bottle of hand or dish soap, a towel for drying, and a suitable container for your leftovers.

And don’t forget something for any garbage which you should also take home and dispose of properly.

Packing all of these things into a plastic tub allows you to use the tub to wash hands or rinse plates and cutlery.

some frozen entrees some restaurants may offer. When an item is popular, restaurant patrons often ask if there is a cook-at-home version. One restaurant, The Docks in Bayfield, has been quite successful in creating and distributing Papa Coco’s meals and sauces, including casseroles and popular meat pies. They are not only available at the restaurant but also at other retail locations across Huron County like Shanahan’s Quality Meats in Goderich, Blyth Ultramar, and The Old Mill in Blyth. It never hurts to ask a few questions about how restaurants are operating and if there are new restrictions in place.

Some places may be offering a limited menu or they may only be open on limited days and times. You can give them a call to ask, or check out their social media to make sure you know what to expect. Plan ahead if your favourite restaurant is only open certain days and be sure to call in advance. Do they prefer an order the day before? Or with a specific pick up time? If you do set a specific time, make sure to honour their work and be there as close to that time as possible. They are making your food

to be at its optimal freshness.

Do they have new restrictions about doors to enter or a new take-out window? It's good to confirm that in advance too. Check how the restaurant prefers to receive payment and make sure you have the appropriate type of payment method.

And even though you are not receiving service to a table, it is a nice gesture to tip.

The White Carnation in Holmesville has a take-out service available every Saturday and Sunday from 4-7 p.m. They change the menu weekly and offer a selection of salads, mains and deserts. The staff is happy to offer vegetarian or vegan options, but please call in advance.

help out these important businesses in our community is word-of-mouth advertising. Tell your friends if you enjoyed a great experience and let them know how it all works if takeout is a new venture for this business.

Be friendly and polite to staff members or talk to and offer them some encouraging words in these tough times.

Once you have enjoyed your meal, consider letting them know by posting on their social media. Too often people only use those vehicles to complain, so let’s turn that around and cheer on the places you love, so they are still there when you are hungry again. We can make this winter much more satisfying by indulging our families with great meals and supporting our friends and neighbours who run and work at your favourite places.

The great outdoors

A

group of dedicated volunteers has made sure there are two outdoor skating rinks available in the lakeside town when weather allows. And now, the official name of the site has been changed to the John Cove Memorial Outdoor Rinks to commemorate the dedication of one volunteer who passed away this past fall.

Victoria Park, the current home of Goderich’s splash pad, is the place to be in the summer with playground equipment, water fun, green space and tennis courts.

In the winter, however, those tennis courts become the perfect place for a pair of outdoor rinks, one dedicated to free skating and the other for pickup hockey or ringette, according to local councillor and volunteer Trevor Bazinet.

“We wanted to make sure it was in an area so that all users could access it,” he said.

The two-rink system works well, he said, because skaters and hockey players aren’t always able to comfortably share the same space and Continued on page 10

Once the rinks first freeze over, Bazinet said that both are busy during the weekend.

“We don’t keep track, number-wise, but it’s busy,” he said. “It’s been wellreceived in the community.

People like it because it’s free, and want to take advantage of that kind of activity. Nothing is better than skating outdoors.”

The rinks are open throughout the day and offer skating and hockey under the lights until 11 p.m.

The group of volunteers flood it, shovel it and maintain it, Bazinet said, and many businesses and service clubs in the town sponsor to help with expenses and ongoing upgrades, such as the two new rink systems, eighty feet long and 40 feet wide, from EZ Ice that will be installed this year.

A natural gem in Goderich

T

he Maitland Woods trail is a natural gem located right on the edge of Goderich. Volunteers have laid out an easy walking trail through this forest that has a rich diversity of bird, animal and plant life. Boardwalks and bridges have been constructed over vulnerable areas, making it safe for both trail users and the flora and fauna that live in the woods.

The trail is a basic 3.2-kilometre loop, with several side trails that intersect the circle creating options for shorter or longer walks along the trail.

There are two ponds located within the property where you are apt to catch a glimpse of wildlife tracks on

the ice. It’s a great teaching trail to bring the kids (or urbanites) with about 40 signs identifying various trees and shrubs.

The trail loops through mixed forest to a meadow beside a large pond through beech trees and over a swamp and through deep dark cedars.

It is a remarkable trail that has been preserved and maintained by the dedicated group of volunteers that make up the Maitland Trail Association.

There are four access points, but the easiest one is on Parson’s Court with ample parking available at the Knights of Columbus parking lot.

When you enter the trail here, there is a map posted to help you get your

bearings. You can start the loop in either direction, and you should allow 60 to 90 minutes to really enjoy the scenery.

Yoga, juice and clothing

E

ven on the dreariest winter day, you can’t miss the bright butterflies and giant sun shining down from the corner of The Square and Montreal Street. The wall is truly a Goderich-inspired masterpiece representing the beautiful sunsets over Lake Huron and the annual monarch migration.

The bold mural is the brainchild of Clare Sunderland, owner of the Yoga Den and the Den Juice Co. and the artist is Tova Hasiwar, a recent arrival in Huron County and owner of Tovally Vintage.

After meeting and forming a friendship, the two decided to bring their various ventures into a single building at 68 Courthouse Square.

Tova was seeking a larger space for increasing retail inventory at about

the same time that Clare needed an alternative for her yoga classes due to the physical distancing requirements of the COVID-19 pandemic while also ramping up her organic, coldpressed juice business.

Now the yoga classes are taking place at a local martial arts centre and the retail space has transformed into a sip-and-shop destination.

You can browse through the eclectic collection of streetwear from the 1960s to the 1990s while enjoying a coffee and grabbing some cold pressed juice to go! Tova has been collecting vintage clothes for many years and loves the big fashion statements of the 1980s and 1990s.

She specializes in streetwear, but also loves to carry some dressy options. The three businesses each

Hiking in Huron (and a little beyond)

W

inter hiking may seem daunting, but with a little preparation and some local knowledge, hikers will find that winter is one of the best seasons to experience Huron County. We have chosen these hikes because of the great scenery and because the trails are easy to use in snowy weather. As with any outdoor adventure, be sure to dress for the weather, know the forecast and be aware of the trail conditions. Snow can pack into ice quickly and slippery sections are common. Hike with a partner and carry a cell phone.

Menesetung Bridge & Tiger Dunlop Trail Located at the mouth of the mighty Maitland River, this is the Goderich end of the Goderich-to-Guelph Rail Trail (G2G). There is ample parking along the North Harbour Road. From the Menestung Bridge, the amazing vistas of the Maitland as it empties into Lake Huron are picture perfect.

The former rail bed offers an easy walk, even in winter, and this section close to Goderich is well travelled.

The hike along the river offers great

views of the treetops and church spires of Goderich just across the river. About two kilometres from the trailhead you will find some steps up to Tiger Dunlop’s Tomb. There are plaques and information kiosks throughout the parkette to tell the story of Goderich’s famed founder.

From this point, you can return to the parking lot for about a one-hour round trip or, if you have more time, you can cross the footbridge over Highway 21 and continue on through scenic wooded areas until the trail opens up onto Huron County’s rich farmland.

Wawanosh Valley Conservation Area This park located on Nature Centre Road between Blyth and Wingham is a winter wonderland. The 3.1kilometre loop starts by crossing over a low footbridge that spans a pretty little creek with overhanging branches covered with snow and icicles - the perfect stop for your first photo of the hike! When you reach the clearing, veer to your right to walk down a lane with pine trees and bushes on either side. You will then

walk through several meadows until you curve back around and reach a hemlock forest. There, the trail follows the Maitland River and then goes up over a steep ridge section to return to the clearing near the bridge.

There are several boardwalks throughout the forest and they can accumulate snow and become quite icy, so use caution when you’re crossing. 38854 Nature Centre Road, Belgrave.

Pinery Provincial Park Just across the county line in neighbouring Lambton County lies a provincial park that can be enjoyed year-round. The park maintains two of its hiking trails for winter use.

Both the Cedar Trail (2.3 kilometres) and the Heritage Trail (three kilometres) have parking available at the trailheads. The trails can be either hiked or snowshoed. Wildlife and winter birds abound in the park and can be easier to spot this time of year.

hen the former owner of the Village Bookshop in Bayfield was starting to think about retiring, many were worried that the much-loved store would not survive. Enter several friends who decided to form a partnership, buy the business, and run it themselves.

Each partner brought their own strengths to the table and have found the first year of business both challenging and exciting.

With the COVID-19 lockdown coming shortly after the group opened, they quickly pivoted to focus on online and over-the-phone sales and offered, for a time, a free delivery service for Huron County.

Once the store was able to open for in-person shopping, the new owners were pleased with the response from both local regulars and tourists.

The shop itself is in a quaint old house at 24 Main Street Bayfield, which adds to the charm of browsing through several rooms of books. With the focus on Canadiana and local authors, it also offers a great kids section, and now some art supplies as well. If you don’t see what you are looking for, just ask one of the helpful staff (likely one of the new owners) and they are happy to make a special order.

Working with artists and spaces across many communities is also built into the plan. By partnering with existing studios and venues, the organization hopes to expand its reach into all corners of Huron County and offer even more diverse opportunities to experience visual arts.

While the pandemic has slowed some of the immediate plans, it also gives the organizers time to raise additional funds and begin the structural work of the future location.

he Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) carries the proud distinction of being the first of 36 conservation authorities formed in Ontario. Since 1946, it has been working to deliver programs that deal with protecting the watershed of the Ausable River. In 1972, its jurisdiction was enlarged to include the Bayfield River drainage basin giving it a total area of 2,440 square kilometres to manage local flooding, soil erosion, habitat loss, water supply and water quality.

Along with forestry and stewardship, environmental monitoring and implementing conservation strategies, the ABCA is active in education and outreach, working with communities to create awareness for a healthy watershed.

ABCA manages 3,635 hectares of conservation lands, including conservation areas. Lands were purchased for conservation reasons, such as soil conservation, floodplain management, forest management,

wildlife management, conserving ecosystems and protecting source areas to improve the overall health of water, soil, and living things in the watershed.

Secondary uses for these conservation lands are passive recreational uses, such as hiking (where permitted), nature appreciation, fishing, canoeing, crosscountry skiing and picnicking.

Hunting is permitted on designated properties, but you must obtain an ABCA Conservation Lands Pass.

County include Crediton, Bannockburn, Clinton, Morrison Dam, Zurich and the Linfield Wildlife area.

The ABCA, through its board of directors, staff and network of committed volunteers, ensures that our natural resources are protected and nurtured for future generations.

amed for its white beans and Bean Festival, held annually in August, Zurich also has another attraction for visitors with All In Skatepark.

Housed in the former local arena, the park provides 32 360-degree, interconnected ramps, with the foam pit and resistance training ramp being the biggest hit with visitors, says Derek Fewster, owner of the establishment that opened in 2015.

Just beyond the entrance, in the former basketball and reception space, is the singular bowl where BMXers, scooter riders and skateboarders ride together. Inside the former ice rink, spectators can still sit in the stands as riders attempt ramps

of various heights and verticals, rather than skate the length of the ice.

“We have a 60-year-old surgeon and a five-year-old girl who frequently use the facility,” said Fewster. Today, in addition to welcoming skaters of all levels, international competitions draw crowds from the west coast of California and British Columbia while the camps attract professionals from as far away as England and Australia.

“A lot of professionals travel for our mega ramp that takes off from the roof building onto a giant air bag.

This helps in securing a lot of the world’s firsts,” said Fewster, adding that his YouTube channel has

millions of views of stunts taking place at the park.

“Building this up has been an enjoyable process, from watching stunts that have never before happened on Earth to watching a four-year-old kid conquer her first ramp. It sounds cliché, but it’s amazing as we get just as much out of the little things as the big things,” said Fewster.

Visitors and locals alike can rent scooters and BMX bikes on site, or arrive with their own. Given the pandemic, All In Skatepark is open on a first-come, first-served basis. The popular foam pit is currently closed due to COVID-19 restrictions.

hile Grand Bend is famous for its beautiful beach, Lake Huron sunsets and “the strip” in summer, winter may be an undiscovered season for many.

Oakwood Resort is working hard to change that. Natalie Core, marketing manager, says that all they need is Mother Nature’s co-operation to transform the entire resort into a winter wonderland.

Oakwood has the rink boards just waiting to create an outdoor skating rink, ideally situated where it is surrounded by trees and lit by strands of lights. It is close to the parking lot, so you don’t have far to go and, after your skate, it is a short walk up to the resort’s pub for some hot chocolate.

In winter, the greenskeepers turn their attention to grooming crosscountry ski trails instead of putting greens. There is also plenty of room to roam the grounds on snowshoes, which are available to rent right on site at the front desk. There are not too many places that you can book in

for a golf weekend in mid-winter in Ontario, but Oakwood’s greenkeepers have found a way to offer snow golf.

Rings are placed on the greens and you can rent equipment to try your hand at chipping the coloured balls into the rings.

All of the winter activities are available for free and everyone is encouraged to stop in and enjoy the property, they just ask that you check in with the front desk so that they

know who is on the property enjoying all the great amenities.

The resort is located right on the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Club’s trail system and offers a snowmobile package when the trails are officially open.

or our new series, Make Huron Home, Mandy Sinclair chatted with designer Cynthia Weber about her and her husband’s decision to make the move to their historic home Bannockburn 1878 in Huron County and the peace of living she experiences in the countryside and why she can’t imagine going back.

• Why Huron County?

Kent and I began coming to Bayfield for weekend getaways soon after we got married. We explored the region and it resonated with us.

Discussions about relocating here peppered our early-married life, and in 2005 we made the move to the county.

• Tell us a bit about Bannockburn 1878 and the moment when you knew this had to be “home” for you and your husband Kent.

In 2014 we were looking for our next project. We had sold our home and were considering everything from a new build to a church or barn conversion, but just hadn’t found the

right fit. We had driven by the house the year before and it just completely spoke to us. On a whim we opened a discussion with the owner and within a few weeks it was ours. Many people have owned this place over the last 140-plus years and we are doing our utmost to marry history with our story and add to the narrative of the property in the best possible way.

• Where in Huron County do you go to seek inspiration

for your design clients?

The county is filled with inspiring locations, people and perspectives. I absorb by osmosis, as well as by intention when you get to the heart of it. When I’m sitting on our back porch watching the sunset with the changing light filtering through the trees and over the ridge, ideas and inspiration come freely. A

s the first snow began to fall in November, thoughts of colourful warm autumn days on the nearby hiking trails faded to memories and I looked forward to seeing these gorgeous paths under a blanket of snow.

This year marks the first time I plan to spend the entire winter in Huron County. While I’ve been here in years past for the holidays, I spent most of the time enjoying the beauty of winter while sitting next to a roaring fire, not brave enough to endure the cold.

But with physical distancing measures in place, this extrovert is going to need a way to socialize

and snowshoeing seems like the perfect option to take in the plethora of trails to take in Huron County’s unique vistas – lake and river views and the rich agricultural fields – on snowshoe.

Plus, the Huron County Library lends snowshoes out on a weekly basis to library card holders.

The Goderich-to-Guelph Rail Trail, one of my favourites in the region, is perfect for snowshoeing given its level trail surface. The Huron County portion of the trail, extending from Goderich to east of Walton, offers up stunning wintertime views. It’s beautiful to look across the barren farmers’ fields where rows of corn and beans flourished earlier in the year while wandering over bridges

covering the trickling creeks and detouring around the mighty Maitland River. And the large open spaces and bare deciduous trees allow the magical winter light – hues of soft blues and pinks throughout the day to shine through, adding a touch of warmth.

Wandering the gentle rolling hills under the snow-capped conifers leading to the natural waterfalls make the Falls Reserve Conservation Area near Benmiller a winter wonderland.

The normally gushing Maitland River becomes eerie as the unique natural waterfalls freeze over. Just up the road and perfect for an aprèssnowshoe, I’ll be heading to Benmiller Inn for a glass of local Continued on page 29

Crossing over the historic Ball’s Bridge on snowshoes, admiring stunning views over the Maitland River, means being able to wander down riverside for a morning coffee and reflection. Fueled up, I suggest continuing along Little Lakes Road to admire the scenic ponds and empty fields. This is one of my favourite

Huron County roads and I’m looking forward to exploring it on snowshoe this winter, as I’m not sure how much this road is maintained in the winter.

The Lobb Trail on the historic Lobb farm, with its riverside rest stops and seven kilometres of trails, makes for a perfect physically-distanced afternoon outing. I’m planning to pull on my winter gear and pack a picnic to enjoy some outdoor dining with views across the Maitland River and

tackle the hills on snowshoe.

When the snow truly falls, Redmond Tract sounds like it will be a true winter paradise with the white stuff falling on the pine trees towering above. Options for a shorter route at approximately half a kilometre and a main loop at nearly two kilometres take visitors through a habitat where fish (the mighty Maitland River passes alongside this trail too) and wildlife thrive.

The Goderich-to-Guelph Rail Trail

A trail unlike any other

J

ust south of Brussels, in the village of Walton lies the former CPR railway line that was abandoned in 1988. Over the next 20 years, various organizations leased portions of the line for recreational use culminating in the formation of the Goderich-to-Guelph (G2G) Rail Trail Inc., a non-profit organization whose mission is to maintain the entire 127-kilometre length as a multi-use corridor of greenspace for hiking and biking.

For many years, sections that were farther from the urban endpoints, including the Walton area, were unkempt and provided a challenging experience especially for cyclists. In 2020, the group was finally able to complete an end-to-end refurbishment, including brush clearing, grading and surfacing with stone dust. With this accomplished, the G2G Rail Trail has truly been transformed into a world-class path and is attracting users from all walks of life to hike and bike either portions or to complete an end-to-end trip.

The rail trail is user-friendly any time of the year and in the winter sections are shared with local snowmobile clubs as part of their sanctioned trail system.

(Snowmobiles are the only motorized vehicles allowed on the trail, other than maintenance equipment authorized by the organizations.)

The section around Walton is becoming known for its pastoral views across expansive farmland and the wooded hedgerows that frame much of the trail. Area businesses and accommodations are becoming trail-

friendly providing amenities and shuttle services, where possible.

Creativity in the heart of Blyth

W

inter in Huron County conjures thoughts of cozy days spent at home watching the snowfall or wanders through one of our historic downtowns. But for those who prefer to learn new skills, a workshop at the Fashion Arts & Creative Textiles Studio (FACTS) in downtown Blyth provides a dose of creativity. Gallery owner Jennifer Triemstra-Johnston provided the inside scoop on what to expect this winter.

With a belief that skills training, local resources and local production can help support a sustainable future for practising artisans, designers and communities, Triemstra-Johnston has planned introductory and

intermediate rug hooking, punch needle, silk painting and fabric marbling, and macramé classes to keep people busy during throughout long winter months.

Triemstra-Johnston is also planning a historical hand-sewing workshop.

“In this workshop one can learn sewing techniques from the Victorian and Edwardian periods that aren’t typically used anymore. These can be applied in either fashion, quilting or interior décor items,” said TriemstraJohnston. Past workshops have allowed students to create a pincushion and even a pillow.

Alongside the workshops, the gallery exhibited the works of Kirk Dunn, a knitting artist, and felting

artist Sheralea Defreitas as part of the FACTS Forest Christmas display that ran in December. Triemstra-Johnston is also working on a winter exhibition, but hadn’t finalized details at time of press.

Today, the specialist gallery is integrated in the community with its natural dye weekends in September, which offer an exciting experience in creating natural colours from surrounding resources. The outdoor workshops take place at the Blyth Lions Park and the FACTS gardens.

“It’s a day full of sharing, laughter and creativity,” adds TriemstraJohnston.

So it’s no wonder that TriemstraJohnston chose to set up shop in Blyth after working several seasons as a costume designer with the Blyth Festival. She said she “loved the creative energy found in the county.

After working as a consultant for an arts program in Blyth, I discovered a huge interest in fibre art among the community.”

Getting wild in Blyth

C

indy McKenna and her husband Hans Veenvliet have moved their Southampton art studio, Wild Goose Studio Canada, to Blyth’s main street. Since taking over the storefront, they have re-imagined the space, inside and out, and spent months making it a dream space for themselves.

Veenvliet is a woodworker who crafts everything from furniture to memorial pieces. He started out as a stonemason and a contractor, but left most of that work behind and started focusing on woodworking after a friend asked him to turn a family member’s violin into a memorial

piece. Veenvliet has since repeated that process multiple times with other instruments, deconstructing the body and reforming the pieces into something unique.

He also works with live-edge wood in both furniture and artistic design.

McKenna is primarily a painter, having dedicated most of her life to the craft. She also teaches art through the studio, running painting workshops for children.

The couple fell in love with Blyth when one of Veenvliet’s pieces was shown at the Community Show hosted by the Blyth Festival Art Gallery.

The couple moved into the space in 2019 and the extensive renovations started soon after and haven’t really stopped since. The front of the store is scarcely recognizable from its previous incarnation with natural wood replacing everything at the storefront and the side of the building. The interior has been stripped back to exposed brick, creating an inviting space for both the exhibition space and the studios in which McKenna works and teaches.

Something sweet in Wingham

D

ebbie Busby, founder of Sweets N’ Treats on the B Line at the north end of Wingham, has been passionate about chocolate since 1996. The business started in her kitchen for Halloween that year and eventually took over her entire house with up to 16 employees working to create a wholesale line of chocolate creations.

In 2005 it moved to the current location and began to focus on the retail business.

Sweets N’ Treats now concentrates on its handmade chocolate and gift baskets. The store also carries gifts and has recently brought in Marie Sharp’s, a popular

line of hot sauces from Belize.

One of the most popular items is a piñata cake - a hollow chocolate shell shaped to look like a cake that is filled with treats and ready to be smashed open, making for a fun wedding tradition.

The store has been able to continue hosting sweet parties for small social bubbles at the store, whether it’s a birthday or a bachelorette party. It’s a great place to host a party for any occasion, other than during their busy season in November and December when they just run out of elbow room.

A unique find

W

ith a very memorable name, I Want That Bag is a very unique consignment store in downtown Lucknow where the pretty main street is spread along Highway 86 between Wingham and Amberley, just northwest of Huron County.

Many of the repeat customers at I Want That Bag have found this local gem as they were heading towards the lake and found it worth stopping for.

The stock is carefully curated by owner Danielle and her staff to have the feeling of a cozy boutique. They review each item to make sure it is in good shape and put a lot of thought into arranging the items in attractive ways. There is a wide selection to choose from, including clothing, dishes, decor items and some lovely gift selections. All items are consigned by a variety of vendors.

The store also works with the Canadian Diabetes Society and local charitable causes, and staff members are proud of the support they put back into the community.

Out on the trails

W

hile winter can often seem like a long period of bitter cold, shoveling snow and hours and hours of darkness, from the seat of a snowmobile, Huron County’s winters can be a time to treasure and have fun.

Because there are trails crisscrossing the province and the county, snowmobilers can visit Huron County from anywhere in Ontario and viceversa thanks to the efforts of groups like the Brussels and Walton Trailblazers Snowmobile Club and the North Huron Trail Groomers Inc. Snowmobiling is dependent on snow, of course, so while there isn’t a definitive start or end to the snowmobiling season, once the snow starts making a permanent home on the fields and in the bushes, trail groomers will be out in force to get the trails ready for licensed snowmobilers to make use of. From there, it’s just a matter of time until snowmobilers can hit the trails and enjoy Huron County’s winter wonderlands.

Permits for the 2020-2021 season are still available online at a cost of $220 plus a processing fee. (Each year early bird discounts are available before December 1st). Special “classic” permit prices are set for owners of antique snowmobiles at a rate of $150 plus a processing fee.

Temporary permits are also available if you are only able to get out for a weekend.

The permits are just like licence plates on cars and are the property of the Ministry of Transportation, however the money from the sale of permits goes to the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC), not the ministry.

The OFSC and member clubs take the funds from the sale of permits and use them for maintaining the morethan 40,000 kilometres of trails in Ontario.

All permit holders also receive a copy of the OFSC Trail Guide, which includes lists and maps of all the trails in the province.

Permits are also available for youth drivers from ages 12 to 16, though due to the fact that those drivers can’t have normal driving licences, they need a special permit.

Classes are available throughout the winter to help teach the skills and etiquette necessary on the trail.

To take part in the course, participants must be at least 12 years of age, however the courses are for all ages. Whether riders are young or experienced, new to snowmobiles or seasoned sled operators, the course offers a great experience for all riders.

The courses must be pre-registered and will consist of six hours of

classroom training. Participants who complete the course will receive a snow vehicle operator’s licence.

It is important to note that snowmobiling on or across any road is illegal for operators under the age of 16.

Riders need to keep an eye on the OFSC website once the snow starts flying. Trail reports and updates are available on the site as soon as the trails are open.

Safety always comes first for groomers and trail maintenance workers, and the trails are patrolled to ensure that. OPP, alongside club wardens, are on the trails and riders found without permits can be fined up to $1,000.

The OFSC reminds all riders, on their website, that trails do not denote ownership, and land that is offered to the clubs should be treated with respect as riders are guests on it.

While trails may be prescribed or suggested by the OFSC, they still belong to the landowner. District 9 borders on Lake Huron and covers an area as far south as Mitchell, Wellesley and Cambridge, as far west as the lakeshore and as far east as Shelburne and Guelph.
