A new trail

T

he 2017 International Plowing Match, held just outside of Walton, has left Huron County a legacy that will outlast many memories created during those successful five days: the Huron County barn quilt trail.

The concept came to many local residents at a Huron County Plowing Match courtesy of Cheryl Gardiner of Gardiner’s Gate. She had a display at the match years before the event came to Huron County, showcasing a unique business dedicated to custom, handcrafted barn quilts. Barn quilts are large (most range from one foot squared to eight feet squared), handpainted badges for barns, many of which you can see high atop the landscape along the rolling hills of southwestern Ontario.

In Huron County, over 120 barn quilts have been erected in recent years and they are all listed and mapped on the Ontario barn quilt trail website, many complete with descriptions of the barn quilts, their design and the story behind them.

Some are placed at businesses, while others are at home farms or schools. Some are even at event

grounds, like the site of the annual Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby Association’s reunion in Blyth or at Don McNeil’s shop in Brussels.

The 123 barn quilts located throughout Huron County are spread consistently throughout the community, though many are concentrated in the central communities of Huron, with most located south of Wingham and north of Hwy. 8 near Clinton and Seaforth.

A book detailing the barn quilts of Huron County was even produced in the months leading up to the 2017 International Plowing Match, though it was such a popular item that it has now been sold out for months.

Many of the barn quilts celebrate a family’s history or the history of a farm and the commodity it has been producing for generations, while others celebrate Canada or the Huron County community.

Near Brussels, the Armstrong family’s barn quilt celebrated the aerodrome located at the farm and the family’s rich aviation heritage.

Norah’s Pinwheel at the home of Brian Schlosser is a special one, especially with its roots in the

International Plowing Match.

Schlosser featured the barn quilt at the match at the Brussels Fall Fair tent, asking visitors to sign the quilt.

He then sealed up the creation and erected it on his barn, complete with thousands of signatures.

G2G Rail Trail

From Guelph to Goderich

W

ith the Goderich-to-Guelph (G2G) Rail Trail now in full swing, hikers, runners and cyclists are now free to travel from Goderich to Guelph and to all points in between on an abandoned rail bed that has been converted into a fine, smooth trail.

The rail line was built by the Guelph and Goderich Railway, completed in 1907. The rail line’s goal was to link the port of Goderich and a number of rural communities to Guelph.

While the rail line proved to be beneficial for decades, freight and passenger traffic began to decline with the advent of the automobile and the line would eventually be decommissioned. The line was officially decommissioned in 1988.

The process of turning the former line into a trail began in 1998, when the County of Wellington and the Municipality of Waterloo leased 45 kilometres of the trail from just outside of Guelph to Millbank and created the Kissing Bridge Trail. The Goderich to Auburn Rail Trail and the Blyth Greenway Trail would be developed in later years as well, bringing a trail and its benefits to the west end of the former rail line.

The process of creating the G2G Trail then officially began several years ago, when several trail enthusiasts saw the potential of the G2G and began preparing the necessary paperwork and clearing the trail.

G2G Rail Trail Inc. was formed in 2013 and work began on ensuring the trail’s success and accessibility from one end to the other for a number of recreational, tourism and economic reasons.

The trail officially opened to the public in 2015 and has seen plenty of traffic in the years following.

In the years since, plenty of work has been done and improvements have been made and the G2G has even hosted a number of events in recent years. It is even the subject of a Lynda Wilson book called Walking Home, which details her and her husband’s trek from one end of the trail to the other. They were

the first to walk the trail from end to end before it was officially opened to the public.

The trail annually hosts its Spring On The Trail event in May, which is aimed at getting locals “off the couch” and onto the trail to begin the warm season in Canada.

Celtic Roots Festival

he Goderich Celtic Roots Festival has been delighting audiences since 1993 and this year it’s back and bigger than ever, celebrating the Celtic history that is so rich in Huron County.

The event has grown from a single memorial concert held in the early 1990s to a week-long school of music, dance and art for audiences of all ages.

This year’s festival, set for Aug. 911 at Lions’ Harbour Park, will feature over a dozen acts from all over the world, including many Canadian artists.

Irish music veterans Altan will be among the festival’s big draws. The band members have been making music together for 35 years and are referred to as legends in the genre, finding fans all over the world, including in Ireland, Japan, Australia and Europe.

Liz Carroll, an American fiddler from the Chicago area, will also be part of the festival. Carroll was the first Irish-American to be nominated for a Grammy Award.

Also appearing at the festival will be Brian McNeill and Tony McManus, both of Scotland.

Rounding out the bill will be Runa, Shane Cook and the Woodchippers, Arrowsmith: Robb Trio, Caroline Keane and Tom Delany, the Seamus

Back to school Goderich

T

he Celtic College in Goderich – the companion educational experience to the Celtic Roots Festival – will again offer dozens of opportunities to the young people of Huron County and beyond this August.

World-class American fiddler Liz Carroll will be among the instructors at this year’s college, which will run from Aug. 5-9.

The college has made its name as a four-day, immersive educational

event in the week leading up to the famous Goderich festival. Over 60 instructors will be on hand for the festival.

Full-time enrolment in the four-day college will run students $400 each, though there are early-bird specials for those looking to enrol next year.

Family discounts are also available and there are also discounted rates for students wanting to just take one, two or three classes.

The classes are designed for a variety of skill levels. There are four 80-minute classes per day.

And while there are workshops throughout the day, there are also evening concerts and music sessions

by night throughout the whole week.

Behind the bars

ehind the Bars at the Huron County Historic Gaol has introduced a whole new audience to the stories and history of Huron County through an interactive, dramatic experience.

Developed in recent years by Huron County staff, the nights bring together community actors and the historic jail location to tell stories of prisoners who spent some time there. Behind the Bars is performed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. in August.

The program has earned rave reviews by those who have attended, saying that they learned plenty about the jail that would house Huron County’s real-life criminals between 1841 and 1911.

The interactive tour is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Children under five are free, as are Huron County Museum members.

his summer, the Goderich BIA is continuing its well-received tradition of hosting Thursday night concerts on The Square.

To date, the Goderich BIA has already welcomed acts like Roadside Glow, the Goderich Laketown Band, Madison Galloway, Cheap Thrills, Lite and Easy and Ron Allin and the PickUps to the stage. In August, the BIA will have five more concert dates before wrapping up for the season.

he Goderich Laketown Band has been performing and supporting music in Huron County for over 50 years, promoting local musicians through their Sunday night Concert in the Park series.

The concerts are set in Harbour Park on West Street every Sunday night at 7 p.m. They began on June 23 with a performance by Reynolds, Robinson and Lodge.

The concert series will host the Kincardine Brass Band on Aug. 4, followed by a break on Aug. 11 due to the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival.

The Stratford Concert Band will be performing on Aug. 18, followed by the Ayr-Paris Community Band on Aug. 25 and the Irish Cowboys on Sept. 1 to round out the season.

A captive audience Huron County Historic Gaol

he Huron Historic Gaol has been a tourist destination for years now after being closed in 1972. Before its closure, however, the building served as the county’s jail beginning in 1841.

The unique Octagonal building was viewed, at the time of its construction, as a model of humanitarian prison design. It originally served the Counties of Huron, Bruce and Perth, but eventually only housed prisoners from Huron County for much of its history.

It is a unique structure in that the Governor of the Gaol used to live on its second floor with his family. In 1901, the Governor convinced Huron County Council to build a house for him and his family, which still stands as part of the Gaol complex.

The Huron County Historic Gaol is now officially designated as a National Heritage Site that is visited by thousands of people every year.

The site includes a courtroom, holding cells, cell blocks and working rooms like the Turnkey’s office, the medical room, the kitchen, the laundry and living quarters.

Visitors have been intrigued by the building and history, but in recent years the Behind the Bars program has reinvigorated the site.

Held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights throughout August, Behind the Bars brings together local actors and storied history to give visitors a taste of life, crime and

incarceration in Huron County in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, going behind the headlines.

est Coast Blues is back again in Goderich on Labour Day weekend, beginning with the “Downtown Shuffle Walkabout” on Aug. 30 and the main stage show on Saturday, Aug. 31.

The Downtown Shuffle Walkabout Blues Friday night begins at 9 p.m. and runs until midnight. Eight restaurants and bars on or near The Square will be featuring live acts, keeping with the festival’s annual tradition.

Sal’s Alley will be performing at Joe Friday’s, while the Stanley Brown Blues Band will be playing at Paddy O’Neil’s. Blueswinder will be at Pat and Kevin’s, Sylvia Dee and The Boyfriend will be at West Street Willy’s, while Tim Woodcock will be at The Parkhouse.

John Power will perform at Part II Bistro, while Big Rude Jake will be at Cait’s Café and the Brant Parker Blues band will play at the beer tent on The Square.

On Saturday, music on the main stage begins at 1 p.m. with Brad Canning and The Grooves. Glenn Marais and The Mojo Train will begin at 2:35 p.m., followed by Rev. Doug and The Old South Boys at 4:10 p.m.

Elliott and the Audio Kings begin their set at 5:45 p.m., followed by the Waterstreet Blues Band at 7:20 p.m. and the Fog Blues and Brass Band at 8:55 p.m.

Headliners, the Smoke Wagon Blues Band will begin the final set of the night at 10:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the festival will also include a motorcycle show and shine from 2-4 p.m. A relatively new addition to the program, the show and shine has proven to be a popular aspect of the festival, attracting visitors from far and wide to Huron County.

H

uron County has long supported the drive-in restaurant, or hamburger stand concept. In fact, two restaurants that popped up in the 1950s are still going strong today.

In an era when franchises with drive-throughs are much more prevalent, these independent operators are still thriving by serving quality food and providing fast, friendly service.

In fact, while food trucks are the hottest trend and we rave about our local chefs creating tasty menus with local ingredients, these entrepreneurs are quietly feeding the masses on steamy summer evenings when no one wants to turn on a stove at home.

Huron County is home to six drivein restaurants that are each decades old. Come along for the tour: Our first stop is the Farmer’s Dell just south of Brucefield, which first opened in 1956. Current owner, Jeff Oesch, has had the dream of owning it for over 20 years, and when the chance came up again last year, he jumped at it.

He describes his menu as a “bit different” than the standard burger joint. His menu tries to keep local ingredients prominent. “We have to make this fun and give people a real reason to travel to Brucefield,” he says.

You will find a different special on the menu every weekend, such as Irish nachos and deep-fried cheesecake.

Customers make the trek to Brucefield just for the London Ice Cream Company’s hard ice cream that Farmer’s Dell serves, but don’t forget to try the angry farmer wrap while you are there (shaved ribeye, fried onions, chipotle mayo and jalapeno peppers). Or, if you’re up for it, you might order the barnyard burger (six-ounce patty, four-ounce breaded chicken burger, bacon, fried egg and onion rings on a bun). 6 London Road, Brucefield.

Woodland Drive In has sat on the edge of Bayfield for over four decades. The current owners have been building their menu since 2003, and now serve everything from

burgers and wraps to fish and chips.

They have frozen yogurt, as well as the traditional soft and hard ice cream.

While their burgers are legendary (especially the Woodland burger), owner Jennifer Fuller notes that their poutine is definitely gaining in popularity. “You absolutely have to try the buffalo chicken poutine or our bacon cheeseburger poutine!” 17 Mill Street, Bayfield Sky Ranch is nestled next to the Goderich airport, right on Highway 21 just over the bridge. This familyowned drive-in restaurant has been serving the same great fare by the same great family since 1967. Josh and Jodi Nurse purchased the business from his father Paul 10 years ago.

Their extensive menu features topof-the-line meats, 52 flavours of soft ice cream and 11 flavours of hard ice cream.

Frosty Queen has been a fixture in Wingham’s downtown since Fred Templeton and Murray Taylor decided to jump on the burger stand bandwagon back in 1957. It seemed pre-destined for John Frieburger to be in the drive-in business when he purchased the business in 1994.

Their menu is based on the longstanding successful model of serving traditional food well: hamburgers, french fries, chicken fingers, fish and footlongs. But the piece-de-resistance is the soft serve ice cream. They still use real ice cream in their machine, and it makes all the difference.

Their restaurant is also seeing a surge in the popularity of poutine.

Their secret? Shredded cheese. “It’s more flavourful”, John says.

“Customers only think they want cheese curds,” he adds, with a laugh.

Over the years, the restaurant has expanded to feature a dining room and now they’re also becoming

known for their pitas. 143 Josephine St, Wingham.

Freeze King in Seaforth has been around since 1966. The current owners, including Paul Dolmage, have been running it since 2005.

While they are a burger stand, the real attraction here is the fish and chips.

What makes their fish stand out?

Paul says that it’s fresh dipped batter.

It keeps their customers coming back, week after week, all summer long.

If you’re not a “fish person”, be sure to try the breastwich king sandwich - breaded chicken breast topped with bacon and cheese.

Freeze King is set in a lovely treed area with picnic tables, and white twinkling lights in the trees to provide a unique, relaxing outdoor dining area. 42566 Huron Road, Seaforth.

Willy’s Burger Bar is our last stop on this whirlwind fast food tour, and actually the youngest of the stands with only 35 years of history under its eaves. It also has the newest ownership, with Jason and Gillian Potter having just taken the reins in

April. They’re not new to the fast food business, as they were long-time owners of a Harvey’s franchise in nearby Goderich. They were looking for a new venture where they could flex their entrepreneurial muscle and capitalize on Gillian’s marketing expertise. They found that in Willy’s, a successful drive-in restaurant that has been a summer staple in Clinton for generations now. While the menu is very traditional, the key to the ever popular willy burger is the bbq grill that charbroils both patties, before they’re piled on to three buns and loaded with bacon, cheese and all the toppings.

Fish dinners and their wraps are equally famous, but you might be pleasantly surprised if you try the sammy dog or upsize it to a superdog (also has cheese and bacon, but in a foot-long version).

Improvements are in the works with new playground equipment scheduled and the Potters are hoping to re-open the dining room in the near future.

hough one of Huron County’s newer attractions, Windmill Lake Wake and Eco Park has quickly become one of the community’s gems.

Just outside of Bayfield, Windmill Lake is tucked within 200 acres of forest, containing the property’s 40acre private lake.

“We are dedicated to offering everyone an opportunity to sustainably explore the outdoors in Ontario through wakeboarding, paddleboarding, canoeing, kayaking, pedal boating, special events, yoga and adventure retreats,” the company’s website reads. In addition, as an eco park, that means that all activities at Windmill Lake are environmentally sustainable. Owners work to minimize negative impacts on the environment while maximizing their positive impact.

The site has been home to a number events in the years since it opened,

including the annual Central Huron Mayor’s Mingle, a celebration aimed at connecting the residents of Central Huron with their mayor and councillors.

One of the most popular activities at Windmill Lake is wakeboarding.

There are beginning, intermediate and advanced cables for those of all skill levels.

The 40-acre lake is also a perfect spot for paddlers of all skill levels, with rentals beginning at $30 each and lessons beginning at $50 each.

For those looking for an extended experience, a paddle pass is $500 plus tax.

There are also various packages available, as well as the aqua park, which can be rented at Windmill Lake.

Windmill Lake also hosts a number of annual events. The annual Pass the Paddle and Pass the Handle event was held in late July and the Rule the Pool event is scheduled for Aug. 3-4. It features wakeboarding, paddleboarding, the aqua park, canoeing and kayaking, as well as food trucks, live music, vendors and a beer garden.

The 163rd Bayfield Fair

T

his August, the Bayfield Fair will be held for the 163rd time.

Celebrating the theme of “From Field to Table”, the fair is set for Aug. 16-18.

The gates to the fair open at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, welcoming visitors to the midway, which opens in the family entertainment area before the pork roast and beer garden at 5 p.m.

Graham Bedard will then be performing on the RBC local talent stage, while the tradition of the Rise2Fame youth talent show will continue at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.

The night will end with a fireworks show beginning at 9 p.m.

On Saturday, the gates open to the public at 9 a.m., which is when the light horse show opens. The midway opens one hour later, which is also when exhibits and concessions open.

The parade through Bayfield begins at 11 a.m. and many of the fair’s activities begin at noon, including the opening of the discovery tent, a performance by Commissioners Own Pipes and Drums and the Clinton Pipe Band, wiggle cars, face-painting, train rides, Bubbleology, the 4-H Dairy Club achievement day, the 4-H Sheep Club competition, the Friesian horse show and the dunk tank.

With plenty of fun planned for the afternoon, the night will wrap up with the Woodstock Experience music festival, beginning at 7 p.m.

On Sunday, the fair opens once again at 9 a.m., beginning with the miniature horse show at 9 a.m. and the interdenominational church service at 10:30 a.m.

Later in the day there will be a heavy horse show, a birds of prey demonstration and an ol’ time

Trails unlike any others

A

s one of the most scenic areas in all of Huron County, it’s no surprise that Bayfield is home to one of the most intricate trail systems in the area.

The trail system is perfect for travellers of all skill and fitness levels, ideal for walking, crosscountry running and snowshoeing.

The trails vary in length from one kilometre all the way up to five.

There are five trails to occupy those in love with the outdoors.

The Woodland Trail’s path just changed recently. It is a fivekilometre route that is of medium difficulty and features old lumbering roads and deer paths.

The Heritage Trail includes eight historic storyboards along the way, placed at points of interest along the trail, beginning at Clan Gregor Square, the heart of the Bayfield community. The Heritage Trail measures 2.5 kilometres in length.

The third trail in the system is a combination of two small trails that comprise the Varna Nature Trails: The Mavis Trail and the Taylor Trail.

The Mavis Trail measures 2.5 kilometres, while the Taylor Trail is

one kilometre long. The Mavis Trail is classified as being challenging, while the Taylor Trail is flat and ideal for joggers, fitness enthusiasts and pet owners.

The Sawmill Trail is at the top of Old River Road and is two kilometres of stories pertaining to the community, covering everything from ghosts to fires to floods.

The final “trail” is a natural area called the River Flats, which is a 4.75-acre riverside property managed by the Bayfield River Valley Trail Association.

A harbour’s history

L

ooking down from the Hwy. 21 bridge, the Bayfield Harbour is an impressive sight — a forest of sailing boats’ masts and rows of power boats tied up at slips.

Today the harbour plays a vitally important role in the economy of the village. It’s no coincidence that the explosion of new shops in Bayfield followed the expansion of marina facilities several decades back.

The mouth of the Bayfield River has provided boaters with an inviting inlet to the Huron coast for more than 175 years. In the years after farms sprung up inland, and before railways and roads provided efficient landbased transportation, Bayfield flourished as a grain port, says area native Sandra Orr in her book Huron: Grand Bend to Southampton. Despite difficulty getting grain down the steep hills to the harbour, boats were filled and grain shipped to Kingston.

In 1874, $36,000, an immense sum at the time, was spent improving Bayfield harbour, but, Orr says, townspeople felt an additional $10,000 was needed to complete the project and provide a safe harbour because in snow or fog, schooners continued to miss the harbour entrance and wreck on the beach.

One such wreck occurred in November, 1882 when the threemasted wooden schooner Malta, so the story goes, saw a light from the Orange Lodge where a meeting was taking place and, mistaking it for a light at the Port of Goderich, headed the boat inland. Luckily, after the boat ran aground, the Orangemen came to the rescue of the crew of nine men, one woman and one parrot.

Long after the commercial shipping industry died in Bayfield with the coming of better inland transportation, the lack of a railway link to the village and the concentration of shipping in Goderich, fishing continued to be an important part of the local economy.

Many of the scows and schooners which went out on the lake were built by local craftsmen from the oak, elm and pine trees that grew inland.

Traditionally held on the fourth Saturday in August, this year’s event is set for Aug. 23-24.

The festival features a celebration of the humble bean as well as plenty of music provided by local musicians, vendors, a midway, street market and home-cooked baked beans and pork chop dinner.

This year will also feature the Wrench Benders Custom Rod and Antique Car Show, a live auction and cattle sorting.

The car show will also feature a cruise night on Aug. 23, making its way through Hensall, Exeter, Crediton and Dashwood before ending in Zurich.

While the musical line-up for this year’s festival has yet to be announced, many great musicians have graced the festival’s stage over the years, including The Browns Family, Potentially Wasted, Alison Brown, Adam Cyr, Marcel and Joe Gelinas, the Northerners, the MGs and the Bronson Liners.

Wrench Benders set for fair return

T

he Zurich Bean Festival has been enriched in recent years with the inclusion of the car show and cruise night. This feature has added a whole new dimension to the festival.

The Wrench Benders Custom Rod and Antique Show has become a big part of the festival, which first brought a car show on board over 30 years ago.

According to numbers from recent years, the car show has been known to attract approximately 800 cars every year and is categorized as the secondlargest car show in Ontario.

The Zurich Bean Festival, the 54th of its kind, will be held on Aug. 23-24. It will begin with a cruise night on the evening of Friday, Aug. 23.

The cruise night will run through Hensall, Exeter, Crediton and Dashwood before ending back in Zurich. There are two routes, so cars

will be making their way through the towns at different times, but they will all meet back in Zurich at the end in time for the fireworks and flame show on the ball diamond after the cruise.

ad Apple Brewing Company has been earning a steady fan base as one of Huron County’s emerging craft breweries since opening its Hwy. 21 location between Grand Bend and Bayfield.

Founded and operated by the Ingram family, led by Jason, Sarah and Sandy, the company offers its inventive and tasty beers in both growlers and cans. Not only can you pick up their beer and merchandise (including apparel, glassware and more) at their brewery, their website also includes an online store for those who don’t live close to the location.

The company’s full-time beers are West Coast White spiced wheat beer, Cyser-Weisen Strawberry Radler, Hessenland Helles and Bannockburn 1314 Scottish ale, while there are a number of seasonal beers, including Seriously Black dry-hopped porter, Apple Blossom honey brown and Hibiscus ale.

As for the location, Bad Apple is established in a renovated, centuryold barn, which includes a small

orchard where people are free to explore while tasting what the brewery has to offer. Currently, the brewery offers tasting flights and 12ounce pints – and many of the recipes include apples from the onsite orchard.

While the company already has a handful of established beers, there are also plans for future creations as well, including a radler featuring their own plot of grapes.

Bad Apple is also working on an apple blossom honey brown and a “Wet Hopped and Hard” cider in

partnership with the nearby Cornerfield Wine Company. Those are just a few of the “coming soon” products, though more are sure to be added as the seasons change.

As the second craft brewery to officially open in Huron County, Bad Apple has a history on which to build and they have been working with their community partners to experiment and push the boundaries of creativity.

or the fourth year, top musical acts from Huron County and beyond will be taking the stage for free in Grand Bend as part of the Summer Sunset Sounds series.

The concerts are held on the final evening of every summer weekend on Grand Bend’s main beach and all concerts are free of charge.

The acts chosen every year come from a broad range of musical genres, touching on everything from country music to blues and independent acts.

Last year, the likes of Fred Eaglesmith, Emm Gryner, the Mudmen and the Steel City Rovers graced the stage.

The new outdoor stage that was recently constructed is a permanent structure that will be the festival’s home for years to come, all while onlookers are treated to a beautiful view of Lake Huron and a front row seat for one of the most beautiful sunsets in all the world.

This year, Grand Bend welcomed artists like the Mudmen, Sue Foley, Valdy and Kelsi Mayne in July. Skydiving over Grand Bend

ne of Huron County’s most exhilarating and exciting tourist attractions is booming right now: the Grand Bend Sport Parachuting Centre.

The centre, which was started fulltime by Bob Wright in 1982, offers a variety of parachuting experiences – everything from beginners to experts.

Wright has been skydiving for nearly

45 years and has completed nearly 15,000 jumps. He has been teaching jumpers for nearly as long. Wright has been instructing for over 40 years, during which he has taught over 5,000 first-time jumpers.

Bob is complemented by Mary Wright, who has been skydiving since 1994 (her first jump was in Grand Bend). Since then, she has done more

than 4,600 skydives.

For first-time jumpers, the centre offers classroom instruction, practical training and your first jump alongside your instructors. There is also a progressive free fall course available for advanced skydivers.

The Starlite Drive-In Theatre in Shipka just nine kilometres east of Grand Bend is the only remaining drive-in movie theatre in Huron County. The weekend begins on Friday, Aug. 9 with an all-ages kick-off party hosted by the Exeter Lions Club. The party lasts from 6:30-8:30 p.m., followed by live music with Thorns and Roses.

Admission on Saturday begins at 2 p.m., while the rodeo performance begins at 4 p.m.

he Exeter Ram Rodeo has become one of Huron County’s premier annual events and one of the province’s most well-regarded rodeos. Set for Aug. 10-11 in Exeter, this year’s event again promises to be one for the ages.

his year, the Kirkton Fall Fair, with the theme of “Still Growing Strong”, will take place on the weekend of Sept. 6-8.

The event has traditionally included all of the hallmarks of a fall fair, including a parade, a baby show, a kids’ pedal tractor pull and a number of exhibits and vendors over the course of the weekend.

This year, the fair has added a pumpkin parade. Children have been encouraged to pick up pumpkin seeds ahead of the fair to grow pumpkins to be exhibited at the fair. All of the pumpkins grown will be featured on a float in the fair parade.

One of the biggest draws of the weekend has historically been the demolition derby on Sunday afternoon.

n tiny Hensall, The Garlic Box at 54 London Road has been making food infinitely more exciting for over 20 years.

The business began with a one-acre plot in 1997 after the business founders identified specific properties in Huron County soil that were especially conducive to growing garlic seeds.

“The stretch of land cradled

between Lake Huron and Lake Ontario is home to some of the province’s most fertile fields, but its limestone-rich, PH-neutral soil is especially loved by garlic seeds,” the company’s website reads. “Plus, the area has solid winters – needed for cold thriving garlic to develop generous, healthy bulbs.”

The business officially opened to the public in 1998 and has been

consistently offering up quality products in a family-run business setting.

The website, which now offers online sales, features many products sourced from the local ingredients, as well as recipes and a store locator to help customers find their products.

Explore Bluewater through tours

T

here is plenty to see and do in Hensall, which is why the Municipality of Bluewater and Huron County have compiled a number of walking and driving tours for Bluewater communities.

These tours, accessible both on foot and by car, are available at explorebeyondtheshore.ca.

In Hensall, the tour is titled “Train Town Tales” and it takes approximately one hour walking at a comfortable pace. The trail was developed last year with the help of the Huron Heritage Fund.

The tour has numerous stops of

historical significance, but many are stationed around the train tracks, which intersect with Hensall’s main street: King Street.

“Hensall was the brain child of two brothers – George and James Petty – a couple of Yorkshire Englishmen who’d been in Canada since at least 1851, farming in Hay Township around Kippen,” says the tour website. “They knew the railroad was coming to the area, so when the route was finalized, they bought some land and approached the London, Huron and Bruce Railway with an offer.

“They’d give them land for a

railway station and yard if the route went through their property and they got to name the station. This ensured easy transport of their crops to market.”

The railway accepted the offer and the men chose to name the town Hensall after the village in Yorkshire in which they were born.

The walking tour can continue as a driving tour by driving west to Zurich for the “Cradle to Grave” tour, then north to Bayfield for the “Heritage Village on a Great Lake” tour.

O

ne of the biggest draws in Huron County continues to be horse racing and there’s no better community to watch the ponies than Clinton.

Clinton has built its image around equine activities for a number of years. Not only is the Clinton Raceway and Slots central to the community, but years ago the Regional Equine and Agricultural Centre of Huron (REACH) was established, bringing students looking for an equine education to Huron County from all over the country.

Post time for the races every Sunday is 1:30 p.m., with races running throughout the afternoon.

Very often, the races coincide with a special event or a fundraiser at the race track.

On Aug. 4, the Huron Perth Lakers will be hosting a fundraiser at the raceway. The Stratford Warriors will be holding a fundraiser to coincide with the OSS three-year-old filly trot on Aug. 11. The Vanastra Curling Club will hold a fundraiser on Aug. 18 ahead of Kids’ Day on Aug. 25, which coincides with the Hunter Costello Memorial FUNdation fundraiser.

On Sunday, Sept. 1 the raceway will play host to the 39th Annual Charity Drivers’ Challenge, a fundraiser for the Royal Canadian Legion. That day is also the OSS twoyear-old colt pace race.

Horse racing in Clinton dates back to 1970 when the Clinton Kinsmen introduced Pari-Mutuel Wagering. In 1983, the Kinsmen turned operations over to a board of directors and the non-profit organization now known as Clinton Raceway Inc. was formed.

The raceway continues to excite audiences young and old with an average of 15 live race dates every summer, stretching from May to

September in the heart of Huron.

n this age when information is as close as a smart phone keyboard, it’s hard to realize that it’s not that long ago that there were isolated parts of Ontario where children had no chance of getting an education. The School on Wheels Railcar Museum in Clinton brings those days back to life.

The School on Wheels is the only remaining example of railway cars that were converted to serve as both a classroom for children and a home for the teacher and his family. This one is located in Clinton because it was home to teacher Fred Sloman and his wife Cela and their five children.

Sloman was the first teacher chosen for a school car, an experiment between the Ontario Department of Education and the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Railroads. In the case of the Slomans’ school car, each week a CN Rail “wayfreight” moved the school car to one of the specially-built sidings on the 149mile route between Capreol and Foleyet where it would remain for about five days. Pupils would come in from the village or the bush for a week of classes and Fred Sloman would leave them enough homework to keep them busy until his return after making the rounds of other stops along the route. More than 1,000 students graduated from this unique school before it was retired in 1967.

The Slomans themselves retired in 1965 to Clinton, which had been their summer home all those years. Fred passed away in 1973 at age 78. Cela was named a Member of the Order of Canada in 1984. A group of Clinton residents rescued and restored the school car. Touring the School on Wheels you can see what life was like for students and the Slomans.

The School on Wheels is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Thursday to Sunday, plus holidays, from Victoria Day until the end of September.

Admission is by donation.

T

he Royal Canadian Air Force Base in Vanastra, which was once declared top-secret, is now the setting for a new heritage walk that celebrates the community’s history.

The walk was created earlier this year as a Jane’s Walk – part of a worldwide network of walks created to honour Jane Jacobs, the late journalist, author, urban planner and community leader – which attracted over 150 people who attended the ribbon-cutting and inaugural walk.

Thanks to the foresight of Huron East Council, 10 heritage plaques line the trail, offering information and historic stories about the community that was so important to the Canadian Armed Forces for so many years. The site was integral in the development of RADAR in Canada.

A large sign directing visitors to the heritage walking trail has been erected at the Vanastra Recreation Centre. The centre serves as the natural beginning of the trail and the history of the community.

There are also plans to plant a small garden at the base of the large sign, that will also be home to a series of black and white photographs celebrating the site’s history.

W

hile Huron County is wellknown for its beaches along beautiful Lake Huron, wading in to the water or diving off a nearby pier aren’t the only ways to get wet in the area.

Many Huron County communities have installed splash pads as a lowmaintenance alternative to full pool facilities, or as additions to those offerings, to make for an easy way for kids of all ages to cool off during the summer months.

Between jets of water spraying upwards, aimable water cannons and showers pouring down from above, the sites below offer ample opportunities for people to enjoy water in the summer months in a unique way that doesn’t require cleaning sand out of every nook and cranny afterwards.

The Clinton Splash Pad (95 Park Lane) opened to the public in 2017, and was part of a major infrastructure project unveiled earlier this year when new washrooms and change rooms were connected to it via accessible pathways.

Wingham’s Riverside Park (West Riverside Park, William Street), located unsurprisingly by the Maitland River in the community, opened in 2005.

It features upward jets, archways and a mushroom-shaped shower to help visitors cool off in the summer heat.

The site is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., May through September.

Goderich’s Victoria Park Splash Pad (80 Victoria Street North) took the place of the community’s former outdoor pool, creating a different way to get wet.

The splash pad includes buttoncontrolled water features that change functions and provide plenty of sun and splash fun.

Aside from the splash pad, the site also features playground equipment and tennis courts, providing fun for all ages.

The Exeter Splash Zone (2-70 Andrew Street) is open all day from late May to September.

Featuring a unique design including mushrooms, butterflies and plants, the park offers plenty of ways to get wet without having to get in the pool.

The site includes a playground as well as a pavillion providing plenty of space for families to take a break while their young ones enjoy the splash pad.

The Hensall Splash Pad (157-171 Oxford Street West) opened in 2014, and was a project led by the Hensall

Kinsmen, among other community donors.

The site is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and closes in mid-September.

The pad includes colourful features providing plenty of water-based fun for visitors.

The site is located beside the Hensall Community Centre and at the same location as the Kinsmen Pavilion and playground equipment, providing a great place for the entire family to visit.

The Bayfield Splash Pad (Clan Gregor Square, 6 The Square) offers a unique opportunity for families to spend a day taking in some of the best Huron County has to offer.

The site is open 9 a.m to 8 p.m. daily until mid-September.

If visitors plan an outing for a Friday, not only can children enjoy the splash pad and nearby playground equipment, but the entire family can visit the

Bayfield Farmers’ Market as well.

Also located near the splash pad, which the local Optimist Club has made possible, are change rooms and washrooms, making the spot a quick and easy stop for families.

Aside from splash pads, Huron County also has a few wading pools for families with younger swimmers to enjoy.

The Blyth Lions Park Wading Pool (308 Gypsy Lane) opened July 1 and runs 1-4 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Monday through Friday throughout the season.

The site includes a playground and pavillion, offering a chance for the whole family to make use of the site.

The Seaforth Lions Pool (42971 Huron Road) offers a full-size pool, as well as a wading pool, a staple of the park since 1962. The site is open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 8 pm. and Saturday and Sunday 1-8 p.m.

n annual tradition that has been on calendars for over 40 years, Ciderfest at the historic Van Egmond House is set for Sunday, Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event has become famous among locals in recent years for the high-quality cider served up that day.

Ciderfest is just one of several events to be held at the Van Egmond House this year. A group of passionate volunteers have sought to reinvigorate the house and increase attendance. Earlier this year, the house played host to a special celebration that marked what would

or an impressive 174th year, the Seaforth Agricultural Society will host the Seaforth Fall Fair on Sept. 12-14. This year’s theme will be “Tractors and Tailgates”.

The Seaforth Agricultural Society was established in 1846, making it one of the oldest societies in Ontario.

In addition to all of the usual events celebrating all aspects of life in rural Ontario, this year the society is introducing a new $1,000 Tomato Trio. Tomatoes must all be grown by the exhibitor to qualify for the event’s grand prize.

A staple of the fair has always been its Ambassador competition, which, unlike many other area agricultural societies, takes place at the fair, not before.

The competition for both the Junior and Senior Ambassadors will be on Friday, Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m.

The Van Egmond House Museum, located at 80 Kippen Road in Egmondville, is a little piece of 19th century society, and the former residence of the Van Egmond family.

After immigrating to Canada from Holland, the Van Egmonds resided in Waterloo County until 1827, where they met Canada Company Secretary John Galt who had an interesting proposition for the head of the family, Colonel Anthony Van Egmond.

In exchange for a cash payment and 14,000 acres of land, Colonel Van Egmond agreed to aid Galt in the construction of a 45-mile-long road between Guelph and Goderich, which Galt believed would hasten the settlement of the Huron Tract, a 4,000 square-kilometre area in what is now southwestern Ontario.

The road was quickly finished, and the Van Egmond family soon packed up their things and moved from Waterloo to Huron County.

But the manoeuvrings of the Family Compact which controlled the province, made it hard for pioneers to prosper. Fed up, Colonel Van Egmond joined the ill-fated rebellion of William Lyon Mackenzie in 1837. He was captured and died in jail.

From pioneering to rebellion, the history of the Van Egmond family was a colourful one, and much of it can be gleaned from a walk through the old Van Egmond House.

The building has been refurbished using materials from roughly the same time period in order to maintain the appearance of an authentic 19th century manor.

However, motocross is still what the raceway does best and the TransCan is the crown jewel of the Walton Raceway and its biggest event, despite taking 2017 off for a variety of reasons.

The amateur championships run Aug. 13-16, while the Pro National Championship will take to the course on Saturday, Aug. 17.

The site offers challenging and innovative activities like climbing, balancing and tight-rope walking.

T

he Brussels Agricultural Society is going “Back to Our Roots” with the 2019 Brussels Fall Fair, the 158th time the organization has gathered for the annual fall tradition.

The fair runs Sept. 17-18 this year. It is a staple of life in Brussels and the Agricultural Society is active throughout the year fundraising for a number of events. In recent years, the society has introduced a tailgate dinner on the Tuesday night of the fair, which has sold out every year it’s been held.

The “Back to Our Roots” theme is a continuation of the 2018 fair, which invited people back to Brussels for the fair after it was held at the International Plowing Match in nearby Walton in 2017.

The fair will begin on Tuesday evening, Sept. 17, with the opening ceremonies, followed by the annual dog show and access to the inflatables, which have proven very popular in recent years, replacing the traditional midway.

On Wednesday, the annual parade will make its way through the streets of Brussels before ending at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre.

At the centre, there will be a day’s

worth of activities, including vendors, demonstrations and displays, along with the 4-H Beef and Sheep Clubs’ achievement days and other special events every year.

The Brussels Fall Fair Ambassador will be a part of the festivities after

being chosen in early August. The Ambassador will be joined by a Little and Junior Ambassador to help share in the workload.

he Brussels Four Winds Barn and Event Centre is the biggest development in the village in decades. And while it’s new to Brussels, much of what stands at its site is very, very old.

The Four Winds Barn is the brainchild of Brian Morton, who took on the project to give back to his community and stimulate economic development in Brussels.

What he’s done is move the

“Wheeler barn”, which was built in 1862, from a nearby farm to downtown Brussels. It’s been revamped with various stone and wood rooms to turn it into one of Huron County’s foremost wedding and event venues, as well as a yearround home for the Brussels Farmers’ Market and various other businesses.

Construction began in 2016, with many community members taking

part in various aspects of the project.

Since then, Four Winds has hosted many weddings, often being booked over a year in advance for nuptials. It has also become the home of numerous community events and fundraisers for several charities.

Fairy doors throughout Brussels

S

ome miniature abodes have recently popped up around the village as the Brussels Fairy Doors Trail has officially been implemented for the summer.

The program is a tourism initiative according to organizer and Huron East Councillor Zoey Onn, who said she and Terry Gray were trying to find something unique to bring people to the village.

“We presented it to the [Brussels] Horticultural Society, and they said yes to it,” she said.

The miniature doors signify the presence of a fairy abode, according to legend.

The program is borrowed from a few different places that Onn and Gray had noticed in other communities, especially in England.

“There are fairy door trails like this and Brussels is a nice place to walk around, so it fit,” she said. “There are some in the Brussels Conservation Area and others across the community and we think it will be something different that will bring people to town.”

Onn’s partner Thom Chisholm made several doors for the program while other people in the community made their own.

The first wave of doors has already been installed throughout the community, Onn said, and she plans more, hoping to eventually have 50 to 70 stops on the tour.

She said she plans to implement gamification into the trail eventually, setting up some kind of reward for visiting the different doors across the community. Currently, lists are available at Turning Heads and Making Waves, the 5Rs Community Thrift Store and JD and Company, all businesses on the community’s main street.

ne of Huron County’s most enduring traditions, this year the Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby Association will be hosting its 58th reunion at the Blyth Campgrounds.

Traditionally held the first weekend after Labour Day, the reunion serves to transport thousands back in time year after year, honouring the days of steam power, pioneer life and doing things the hard way.

The reunion began with just a handful of men around the table of Simon Hallahan and his family in East Wawanosh and has now grown to an event that attracts tens of thousands of people to Blyth.

Every year the reunion brings hundreds of area students to the site as part of their unit on pioneer life.

The Student Day is a crucial part of what the reunion does, organizers say, because educating the next generation of children about the pioneer way of life ensures that its stories will live on.

Every year a special tractor manufacturer and classic car are featured and collectors are encouraged to bring what they have to the reunion to show it off.

On Friday, the Threshers welcome students and seniors to the site with music throughout the day and plenty to see and do. On Friday and Saturday nights, there are also

concerts in the Blyth and District Community Centre.

For the second year now, the Stone Boat Pullers will be at the helm of a tractor pull on Friday night. There will also be the traditional corn roasts held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Another new addition this year will be the classic tractor pull for machines manufactured between 1958 and 1978. The fun pull will be on Friday, while the competitive pull will be on Saturday.

There are also several meals served over the course of the weekend, provided by church groups, the Fire Department of North Huron and the Blyth Lions.

can imagine and some that you can’t.

On Saturday, the fiddle competition is held in the location’s Shed 3, followed by the step-dancing competition on Sunday.

Also on Sunday morning is the annual church service in Shed 3. Not only is it a time for those on-site to come and worship together, but it’s also when members who have died in the past year are honoured for their years of dedication to the association.

In recent years, the association has created the Memorial Building, which not only will house some of its newly-donated equipment, but it will honour influential board members who have passed away over the years.

he Blyth Outdoor Market, the spiritual successor to the Blyth Artisan Market of last year, will run Thursday nights in July and August this year from 4-8 p.m.

Headed by Blyth-area native Courtney Bachert, the market will run 4-8 p.m. and, for the third time in two years, be moved, this time to the village’s downtown.

This year, the market will be held beside the new Blyth Pharmacy, on the east side of Queen Street across from the Blyth post office.

Bachert said she is hoping to attract 10 diverse vendors to create a “cozy space” at the market. She also plans to incorporate interactive activities to make the market more appealing.

“Live music and live art are part of my vision, with homemade food to enjoy on the spot, or fresh produce to bring home for later,” she said.

She said that the market will recognize the talents of its vendors, which is a way to celebrate the unique abilities that people in and around Blyth have.

fter a successful first year, Reece Sparling of Blyth has taken his passion for cycling and applied it to his hometown with the creation of Blyth Bike Tours.

There will be two tour options. The first will be a one-hour tour of the village that begins and ends just north of Memorial Hall on Blyth’s main street, near Pick-A-Posie. The second tour option will last two-and-a-half hours, including lunch at Cowbell.

In addition, Sparling has recently implemented bike rentals into his business model, as well as a 45minute walking tour option.

There will also be an option for private group tours that will have to be booked one week in advance. For those tours, he said groups can bring their own bikes and helmets, whereas on the public tours, the company can provide bikes and helmets.

Blyth

lyth’s Rutabaga Festival is being revived this year by the Blyth Community Betterment Group with fun, games, food and musical entertainment.

Set for Oct. 4 and 5, the event starts off with a special concert on Friday, Oct. 4 at Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company featuring Ontario country musician Kris Barclay.

Brussels artist Adam Cousins will open the show, which starts at 8:30 p.m.

On Oct. 5, a whole list of special events are set to take place throughout the community including breakfast at Blyth Memorial Hall served by the Blyth Lions Club, rutabagathemed yoga at Blyth’s horticultural park and activities for younger visitors including children’s entertainer BarryO at Memorial Hall from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and a ping pong tournament for youth, also at Memorial Hall, at 11:30 a.m.

Much of the action will take place at Blyth Lions Park including live music from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. then against 2-4 p.m. The park will also host food trucks which will be serving rutabaga-themed specials. Children’s activities, called the Baga games, will be held at the park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At 1 p.m., the festival’s Bed Races and Soap Box Races will be held on Gypsy Lane with information available at Blyth Lions Park.

A home run derby will be held at the Blyth Campground starting at 2 p.m.

Other events on Saturday include tours of Hubbard’s rutabaga plant, a cycling event in Blyth and the surrounding communities, a beverage tent at Blyth Lions Park and a community dinner.

ingham’s Lisa Kleyer is bringing the adrenaline and excitement of professional wrestling to Huron County and the surrounding area with Huron Wrestling Entertainment.

Founded last year, the first show for the organization was May 18 at the

Wingham Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. In a recent interview, Kleyer said it was a true grassroots movement.

Kleyer, a Woodstock native who moved after being encouraged to move to the area by a friend from Brussels, has had a long history with

professional wrestling, first having her interest sparked by early World Wrestling Federation bouts and stars like Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant. However her passion didn’t bloom until she saw Stone Cold Steve Austin wrestle.

Professional wrestling, Kleyer said, brings people together in a special way and live events provide a completely different experience and atmosphere.

After the Huron Wrestling Entertainment event scheduled for July 20 in Listowel, Kleyer says that wrestlers will be returning to the Wingham Royal Canadian Legion on Aug. 31.

Kleyer said she watched local wrestling entertainment leagues in Toronto when she was younger, and dated a referee from the organization.

She said when she first entertained the idea of bringing professional wrestling to Huron County, there were doubters, but she made it her goal to make it work.

160 years of the fair This September, the Howick Agricultural Society will be hosting the 160th Howick-Turnberry Fall Fair in Gorrie at the Howick Community Centre.

This year’s fair is scheduled for Sept. 27-29 and the theme is “Country Pride, County Wide”.

Because this year’s fair will be marking an anniversary, those at the society have some special events

planned, including a corn maze and special entertainment.

Just before the fair, the society will host its annual ambassador competition for 2019/2020. That means the fair will be saying goodbye to Kaitlyn Kamrath, the daughter of Laura Pottruff, who was the 2018/2019 Fall Fair Ambassador.

Belgrave

A day for kids

A

n annual tradition that will be celebrating its 99th year this September, the Elementary School Fair in Belgrave brings together area students to show off some of their skills. This year’s fair will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

The fair began in the days of oneroom schoolhouses and continued to celebrate local students and the agricultural way of life after larger schools were built throughout Belgrave, Blyth and Brussels.

With the closure of several local schools years ago, the fair was expanded to include students from Wingham. Since that decision was made, the fair has continued to thrive and expand.

The day begins with a parade to the Belgrave ball diamond where there will be a number of presentations from local politicians, school board representatives and students. In recent years, the fair has also created an ambassador program. This year’s ambassador is Bryn McInnes, taking over for James Speer.

After the program at the Belgrave ball diamond, the action moves indoors to the Belgrave Community Centre, where all types of produce, school work and other accomplishments of students are celebrated.

There is also an extensive program outdoors as well, including a livestock show and food vendors.

W

hile many people hike the Maitland Trail between Goderich and Auburn alone or in small groups, there’s one event each year that becomes a joyous gathering of those who love hiking.

The El Camino hike takes two days (Sept. 28-29 this year) to cover the 49 kilometres from the head of the trail near Auburn, along the beautiful, winding route of the lower Maitland River to Goderich. Hikers will traverse narrow trails, wide rambling trails, hills both up and down, through forests, past farmland, river vistas, autumn meadows and towering forests. They may see wildlife: from toads, salamanders and snakes to ravens, robins and majestic bald eagles.

get-together on Friday night, and each day starts off with an oatmeal breakfast bar at the Benmiller Community Hall. Saturday night there’s a harvest supper at the Goderich Legion.

practical steps have also been taken.

The county has undergone a pilot project, paving the shoulders of a stretch of road between Saltford and Benmiller. If the trail sees a significant uptick in usage, the county may consider paving more of its shoulders.

The committee is also in the midst of refreshing its cycling guide, which should be released later this year.

The pamphlet, which is available at locations throughout the county and online at the county’s website, features any information visiting cyclists would want to know about Huron County. It lists the times and locations of group rides, cycling shops, a map of paved roads, a guide to dirt roads and trails and a number of circuit routes.

Whether it’s in the north, the south, the east or along Lake Huron’s coastline, cycling in Huron County is a beautiful way to spend a day. Many quiet, cycling-friendly roads have been lined with “Share the Road” signs to ensure a polite symbiosis between cyclists and motorists, while its rural landscapes and small communities serve as the perfect getaway for urban cyclists sick of traffic, busy intersections and unpleasant interactions with motorists.

The two-wheel view

W

ith its rolling hills and picturesque countryside, Huron County is an ideal setting for cycling. Hitting the road with two wheels instead of four offers cyclists a closeness to the landscape of Huron County that cannot be experienced from the inside of a car.

As Huron County has become a cycling destination for athletes from London, Sarnia, Kitchener/Waterloo and beyond, the county has begun throwing its weight behind initiatives to get more cyclists on the road and ensure that Huron County roads are as cycling-friendly as they can be.

Working with the Share the Road Coalition, the Huron County Cycling Strategy Committee held a number of public workshops in 2016 to gauge public interest and receive input on how the county could improve its roads for cycling.

As a result of the work with the Share the Road Coalition and the

public workshops, the committee created the Huron County Cycling Strategy, which was approved in early 2017.

Work has been underway on a number of the strategy’s initiatives and while education has been a large component of the work, many

hat began as a small but ambitious initiative by the Lucknow Kinsmen to raise some money for the community has now grown into one of the biggest annual country concerts in Ontario.

This year’s event is slated for Aug. 23-25.

This year the Lucknow Kinsmen will be hosting the 11th annual Music in the Fields. Concerts will continue over three days and bring together some of the biggest names in country music – as well as contemporary Canadian music – to the small village.

In its first year, Music in the Fields attracted just over 1,000 people and now it routinely attracts nearly 10,000. This rapid growth has allowed the Kinsmen to purchase their own grounds for the event, dubbed Graceland Festival Grounds as a nod to former owner Grace Hopf.

Over the years, the Kinsmen have invested over $1 million into the community as a result of the success of the event.

This year’s event begins on Thursday, Aug. 23 with the Thursday Night Throwdown, beginning at 8 p.m. with DJ Johnny Rivex. Shawn Austin then takes to the stage at 9 p.m. before Andrew Hyatt at 10 p.m.

DJ Johnny Rivex then returns for the night’s after-party, beginning at 11 p.m.

On Friday, Aug. 24, Canadian legends Blue Rodeo will headline, beginning their set at 10:30 p.m. This will be the second time around for Blue Rodeo, who performed in Lucknow in 2013.

DJ Johnny Rivex gets things rolling again on Friday night beginning at 6 p.m. before East Adelaide takes to the stage at 8 p.m.

Madeline Merlot then performs at 9 p.m. before Blue Rodeo closes things out at 10:30 p.m.

There will also be two CMA Ontario Stage acts on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., though those musicians have yet to be announced.

On Saturday, Billy Currington is the headliner, taking to the stage at 10 p.m.

Sons of Daughters begins things at 4 p.m., followed by Kira Isabella at 5:15 p.m., Canadian legend Kim Mitchell at 6:45 p.m., the James Barker Band at 8:15 p.m. and then Currington at 10 p.m.

Artists will be on the emerging artist stage all night as well, but that lineup had yet to be announced at press time.

ne of the most well-known produce auctions in the area is the Bruce-Huron Produce Auction, which takes place from April to November at RR3, Holyrood, just north of Lucknow.

The auction operates with three distinct seasons. In the early season (May-June), customers can expect hanging baskets, bedding plants, vegetable transplants, asparagus, rhubarb, beets, lettuce, strawberries, peas, broccoli, cucumbers and tomatoes.

his year, the Lucknow Agricultural Society will seek to answer the age-old question, “Who Let the Hogs Out?” as its theme for the Lucknow Fall Fair, set for Sept. 20-22.

The fair begins on Friday, Sept. 20 with the arrival of the exhibitions.

The fair will open to the public at 6 p.m. that night so they can see the agricultural exhibits, the homecraft exhibits and the 4-H displays.

After some mutton busting in the beef show ring, the opening ceremonies will begin at 7:15 p.m., featuring addresses from local dignitaries, the ambassador competition, the pie and cake auction and the announcement of the field crop winners.

On Saturday, livestock shows, the 4-H beef show, the open sheep show and the dairy show will begin at 9:30 a.m.

The parade will make it down Lucknow’s main street at 11 a.m. followed by musical performances and remote-controlled truck demonstrations.

There will be numerous activities held throughout the afternoon until the Mastermind Hypnotist takes to the main stage for the evening show. For the youth of the community, there will be a dance at

the Lucknow Legion at 7:15-10 p.m.

On Sunday, there will be a breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. and then a community church service at 10 a.m., wrapping up the fair.

Attendance for both Friday and

Saturday costs $5 each for adults, while students Grade 8 and under are $3 each and pre-schoolers are free.

Sunday is free for everyone.

uron County has topography and natural features that are perfectly conducive to golf.

Whether it’s the county’s vast rolling hills or lakeshore property, Huron has all a golfer would ever want in a landscape.

Because of this, Huron has become a place where golfers feel at home.

Seaforth is home to a professional golf tournament, a rarity in rural Ontario, and every year, the Huron County Warden’s hallmark fundraising event is a golf tournament, always held at a course of the warden’s choosing.

This year, Warden Jim Ginn, also the mayor of Central Huron, chose to hold the tournament in his home municipality at Woodlands Links Golf Club, just west of Clinton.

Woodlands Links

Woodlands Links is a golf course where it’s said that no two holes play alike. It’s a shotmaker’s course where water comes into play on 11 of its 18 holes. Also making it challenging are 28 strategically-placed bunkers and natural rough running along the wellmanicured fairways.

Seaforth Golf Club The Seaforth Golf Club boasts a mature and challenging golf experience on its course. It is one that has been recognized on the national stage, playing host to the Seaforth Country Classic for over a decade.

The event began as a PGA of Canada tour event, but has since partnered with the Great Lakes Tour. This year, the tournament, scheduled for the first weekend in August, will break new ground in hosting two concurrent competitions, one featuring 36 male professionals and the other featuring 36 female professionals competing for their own, identical purse.

The 18-hole, Par 71 course measures nearly 6,300 yards from the Highland tees and offers all of the standard amenities, including a pro shop, power carts and lessons.

As far as the course is concerned, the 15th hole is one that’s been identified as a challenge in any round.

The hole presents a risk/reward decision on the approach shot with water both in front and behind the green. In order to land safely on the green, a golfer’s approach shot has to come in high and with plenty of control.

The course has been family-run by the Doig family for well over 50 years and it is open from 7 a.m. until dark throughout the warm season.

White Squirrel Golf Club An 18-hole, Par 72 course located on Highway 21 that boasts a total yardage of just over 6,200 yards, the White Squirrel Golf Club is a local favourite.

The course, formerly known as Bayview Golf Club, measures just over 6,200 yards from the blue tees with a slope rating of 118.

Water is a constant menace on this course, with small rivers and ponds coming into play on more than half of the course’s 18 holes.

Located north of Grand Bend, the course features power carts, club rentals and a pro shop.

The location also features the White Squirrel restaurant, which is located in the newly-renovated clubhouse. The menu is complete with daily specials like Wing Day Thursday, Wine Down Wednesday and Prime Rib Saturday.

Exeter Golf Club Exeter Golf Club is a nine-hole golf course located in Centralia and it measures just over 3,000 yards. It’s located two kilometres east of Highway 4 on County Road 6.

hough it is one of Ontario’s oldest summer theatres, the Huron Country Playhouse shows no signs of slowing down as it enters its 48th season this summer.

The theatre focuses on telling wellknown stories and staging musicals in Bayfield, much to the delight of the thousands who pass through the

theatre’s gates on an annual basis.

After productions of Thoroughly Modern Millie, Disney’s Newsies and Rocky: The Musical, based on the Academy Award-winning film starring Sylvester Stallone, the main stage season wraps up with Grease, which is on stage from Aug. 8-31.

The 2019 season for Playhouse II is

also robust, beginning with Glory, You’ll Get Used To It: The War Show and 12 Angry Men. Jack and the Beanstalk: The Panto, rounds out the Playhouse II season, running from Aug. 8-31.

Founder James Murphy had a dream that Grand Bend, as one of Ontario’s most popular resorts, should have a summer theatre. With the help of some enthusiastic local supporters the dream was realized in July 1972 when the first production Two for the Seesaw took place in a huge tent next to the barn on a farm at the current location, east of Grand Bend off Hwy. 81.

Murphy’s original idea was to turn the old barn into a theatre, but when that proved impractical, they found the solution of building a theatre that looked like a barn. And what a theatre! It is one of the largest summer theatre facilities in Ontario, seating 650 people with a large stage and orchestra pit so that full-scale Broadway and West End musicals could be staged.

Later a second barn-like theatre, Playhouse II was added seating 300.

This facility mostly hosts smaller scale comedies.

Huron Country Playhouse is now part of the Drayton Entertainment circuit that also has theatres in Drayton, Cambridge, Penatanguishene and St. Jacobs.

A wealth of Huron County art

he Blyth Festival Art Gallery has been part of the Blyth Centre for the Arts’ offering for 44 seasons and this year’s offering will be another great one.

The Blyth Festival Art Gallery was created one year after the Blyth Festival thanks to the vision and effort of Ron and Bev Walker, local artists and educators.

The annual season runs from May to September, including the annual Student Show, the Community Show and three professional art exhibits in the Bainton Gallery at Memorial Hall,

the home of the Blyth Festival.

The gallery is run by volunteers.

Admission is free, but donations are accepted to help the theatre bring forward shows season after season.

Debbie Schenk from Walkerton is the season’s second featured artist.

Her mixed media exhibit, entitled “Memories Mark Our Journey”, will run from July 26 to Aug. 18.

From Aug. 20 until the end of the season on Sept. 28, Catherine Weir and Elizabeth McQueen will take to the gallery with Weir offering ceramic pieces and McQueen will exhibit her paintings.

complement one another and they have been created in close collaboration between the artists. The exhibit is called “Heaven and Earth” and those themes are woven throughout the art.

This comes after the first professional exhibit of the year, which was called “Spirits Amongst Us” by Goderich-based artist Roman Turczyn. It will include a themed group showing in various media, including paintings, digital photographs, metal, wood-working and jewelry.

Theatre ‘Cakewalk’ Blyth Festival

N

ow in its 45th season, the Blyth Festival continues to be one of Huron County’s gems and a beacon of independent Canadian theatre in the country.

This year, the Blyth Festival has continued to chip away at its goal of expanding the season. Not only will the season run nearly to the end of September in Blyth, but it began early with the hit production of The Pigeon King produced for a two-week run at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

The 2019 season began with the world premiere of Jumbo, written by noted playwright Sean Dixon.

Jumbo tells the story of Jumbo the elephant, a superstar of the Barnum and Bailey circus in years past.

Jumbo is the Festival’s seasonopening show. It premieres on June 12 and runs until Aug. 10.

The second main stage production is Cakewalk. Colleen Curran’s comedy tells the story of a small town

cake-baking competition and all of the underhanded antics and backstabbing that takes place on the way to a victory at the competition.

Cakewalk is on the Blyth Festival main stage from June 26 to Aug. 10.

The third main stage play is The Team on the Hill, written by Dan Needles, who is best known throughout Huron County and beyond for his Wingfield productions.

The Team on the Hill premiered at Theatre Orangeville in 2013 and it tells a story of farm succession planning. It will be directed by Festival Associate Artistic Director Severn Thompson.

The Team on the Hill is on stage from July 31 to Sept. 5.

The next show, directed by Festival Artistic Director Gil Garratt, is the controversial In the Wake of Wettlaufer, which tells the story of a family’s encounter with long-term care at the same establishment where

convicted Canadian serial killer Elizabeth Wettlaufer worked.

The play, written by Garratt and Kelly McIntosh, aims to tell the family’s story about the current era of long-term care and a decision many families have to face.

In the Wake of Wettlaufer is on stage Aug. 7 to Sept. 6.

The final main stage production is Mark Crawford’s Bed and Breakfast, a comedy that tells the story of a young couple, Brett and Drew, taking over a bed and breakfast in rural Ontario.

The Festival will also produce Eco Echo as the season’s Young Company play (Aug. 15-17) and Sink or Swim (Aug. 20-24) and Rocko and Nakota (Aug. 27-31) at the Phillips Studio.

There will be a free will offering, with proceeds going to the Celtic Blue Highlanders.
