Finding great local food Taste of Huron tours lead to great food processors, restaurants Taste of Huron, an opportunity for visitors and local food lovers to experience the real taste of the county, has been reborn this year with new members, new tours and a new website.

The goal of Taste of Huron is to celebrate all that Huron County’s culinary landscape has to offer. Whether it’s one of the county’s many food producers, its award-winning restaurants or burgeoning beer, wine and cider scene, Huron County has plenty to see, eat and drink and Taste of Huron endeavours to highlight it all.

A different trip to the lake

Goderich-to-Guelph Rail Trail a new county adventure recent years. It is even the subject of a book by Lynda Wilson called Walking Home, which details her and her husband’s trek from one end of the trail to the other. They were the first to walk the trail from end to end before it was officially opened to the public.

This year, has seen an increase in activity on the G2G. The Canada

On the Blyth Greenway portion of the G2G trail the path goes through “the arch” which used to carry the “Butter and Eggs” railway over the Guelph-Goderich CPR line.

With the Goderich-to-Guelph (G2G) Rail Trail now in full swing, hikers, runners and cyclists are now free to travel from Goderich to Guelph and to all points in between on an abandoned rail bed that has been converted into a fine, smooth trail.

The process began several years ago, when several trail enthusiasts saw the potential of the G2G and began preparing the necessary paperwork and clearing the trail.

In the years since, plenty of work has been done and improvements have been made and the G2G has even hosted a number of events in

The Fitzgeralds are among the groups playing at the 25th edition of the Celtic Roots Fesival in Goderich, August 10-12.

Celtic Festival brings great music to Goderich The Goderich Celtic Roots Festival will be bringing the best of the best from the world of Celtic music from around the world to venues throughout the Huron County town.

The event runs August 10-12 at the Lions Harbour Park on West street, overlooking the Goderich Harbour and Main Beach.

Marking its 25th year, the event features acts from overseas, like Goitse, an award-winning quintet from Ireland, Kevin Burke, also from Eire, Fara from Scotland and The Hut People from England. From across the country, the event will be 8 Stops along the way Mid-Summer 2018

welcoming Mama’s Broke and Alys Howe, both from Nova Scotia, Zigue and Méllisandre Tremblay-Bourassa from Quebec and Heather Rankin from Cape Breton.

Acts from across Ontario and from Canada’s Prettiest Little Town of Goderich are also on the schedule.

In honour of the event’s silver jubilee, the Celtic Roots Festival has produced a live album of the 2016 festival. Twelve main stage performances are included on the album from festival favourites like The Once and Hoyt.

Tickets for the event are on sale and discounted in advance until July 31. After that, or at the gate, ticket prices increase. Special rates are available for full-weekend tickets, senior and youth packages.

Celtic College and Kids Camp offers fun, skills training The Goderich Celtic College and Kids Camp, held leading up to the now 25-year-old Goderich Celtic Roots Festival, offers over 100 classes in folk music, song, dance and crafts throughout the Prettiest Little Town in Canada.

Held August 6-10 this year, the event brings over 60 world-renowned experts in the above passions to Goderich Public School at 125 Blake Street West, with some classes held off-site.

Courses include both Scottish and Irish fiddle instructions for all levels of performers, vocal harmony, harp lessons for all levels, step dancing, silversmithing, introduction to stained glass, celtic creature creation, Chainmail 101 and Celtic

design, to name a few.

The Celtic College is for anyone aged 13 and up. Each day consists of four 80-minute classes.

The college also offers, free of charge and to the general public, entertainment through the Celtic College Evening Concert series. As of 2015, the concerts were moved to the performance stage in courthouse park.

Alongside the Celtic College, the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival also runs a Kids Camp, also from August 6-10.

Programming includes art, drama, rhythm and other instructional opportunities.

The school is also held at Goderich Public School and for students aged 4 to 12.

A spectacular view from Menesetung Bridge Who could have imagined, nearly 30 years ago, that one of the most spectacular views in Huron County would be from an abandoned railway bridge, rescued from the scrap heap.

When CP Rail abandoned its line running from Goderich to Guelph, the railway planned to demolish the trestle that had carried its trains high over the Maitland River. Some farsighted local residents, however, thought this bridge should be retained and citizens formed the Menesetung Bridge Association to purchase it and convert it into a walking bridge and trail. Hundreds of people rallied to the cause, donating money to help with the preservation and conversion. If you look down you can see the names of donors on the planks that now carry pedestrians where heavy loads of road graders, salt and grain once chugged along.

The view is spectacular. You may look down and see seagulls actually flying beneath you. To the west you can see the harbour and Lake Huron and to the east the Maitland Golf and Curling Club. The noises of the town and the highway traffic are muffled and the loudest sounds are often the sighing wind and the cries of the gulls.

The Canadian Pacific Railway was a relative latecomer to the area,

that when it was build in 1839 it was an example of a new, more humanitarian prison design.

From the moment you enter the long entrance hall, your footsteps echoing and the atmosphere chilly even on a hot summer day, you get a sense of what it must have felt like being a prisoner here between its 1841 opening and its final days in 1972. Some of the cells have been restored to their original construction of hand-hewn timbers and wooden benches for sleeping.

The Gaol housed some famous prisoners, from James Donnelly, father of the infamous Black Donnellys of Lucan in the 1860s to 14-year-old Stephen Truscott who was in this jail in 1959, facing a death sentence for the murder of schoolmate Lynn Harper. The death sentence was commuted to life in prison by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker and decades later, Truscott’s conviction was overturned.

There’s a break from the oppression of the gaol if you step into the open-air exercise yards, surrounded by 18-foot walls but even here, there’s a chill in the knowledge

arriving only in 1907. It carried passenger traffic only until 1961 and by 80 years after the first train was welcomed, the railway was seeking governmental permission to pull up the tracks.

It’s not just the bridge that was saved. If you cross the bridge you can follow the former railway right of way east to the grave of Tiger Dunlop, who founded Goderich and helped open up the Huron Tract. You can go all the way to Auburn on the Goderich to Auburn Rail Trail (GART) and something even bigger is in development, the Guelph-toGoderich (G2G) Rail Trail, a 127km. trail through Huron, Perth, Waterloo and Wellington Counties to Guelph. Unfortunately for the hardworking volunteers of the group, there weren’t far-seeing volunteers all along the line back in 1988 and several bridges must be replaced to allow people to retrace the entire route of the railway.

the yards were used for hangings, including Canada’s last public hanging of Nicholas Melady in 1869.

In the early days, it wasn’t only the prisoners who braved these grim conditions. On the top floor of the gaol you can see the room where one court was held and Huron County Council met, before the stink from the latrines drove them to meet at a local hotel until the downtown courthouse was built.

The contrast of living in the Gaol compared to the restored home of the gaol’s governor next door is memorable. Here the gaolor’s family lived a relatively refined life by comparison.

Tours of the Gaol are available during regular hours from Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday, 1-4:30 p.m. until August 31.

Admission is $5 for adults, $4.50 for seniors, $4 for students, $3.50 for children 6-11 and $18.00 for families.

Walking trail traces Goderich’s marine history With its rich marine heritage, it’s no surprise that its Marine Heritage Walking Tour is a perfect complement to a summer afternoon in Goderich.

Pamphlets outlining the tour, its route and the history behind its points of interest are all available at the Goderich Tourism Centre, which is on Hamilton Street.

The tour spans several different points of interest from the remains of a ship, to the breathtaking elevated view from Goderich’s lighthouse to the black hole in Lake Huron.

A drive down Harbour St. and then Cove Rd. takes you to the south end of the beach where the you can begin your walk.

One of the early stops on the tour is the “bone yard”. Several ships are laid to rest in this corner of Lake Huron.

As the walk continues north to the main beach, this area is often busy as there are snack shops, a restaurant and other attractions at the mouth of the harbour.

All along the trail and Goderich’s famous boardwalk are public beaches and plenty of places to stop and cool off. There are also several children’s 12 Stops along the way Mid-Summer 2018

playgrounds for the youngsters who aren’t so inclined to sit down and take a quick rest.

Goderich turns blues for September 1 festival The West Coast Blues Festival is bringing blues to downtown Goderich this year, with main stage performances and the Downtown Shuffle, set for September 1.

On the main stage, which features live blues in Courthouse Park from 1 p.m. to midnight, kicks off with The Sterling Blues Band at 1 p.m., the Trevor McKenzie Blues Band starting at 2:30 p.m., Lucas Haneman at 4 p.m., The Chris Trowell Band at 5:30 p.m. and Ginger St. James and the Grinders at 7 p.m. Headliner Jack de Keyzer, touted by Ken Wallis of 101.5 FM The Hawk as a “master of live performance” and a “Canadian Icon” takes to the stage at 8:30 p.m.

The Downtown Shuffle starts at 8:30 p.m. and runs until midnight, also on September 1. One ticket can get blues fans into eight venues around The Square in Goderich.

Venues like Joe Friday’s Sports Bar in the Bedford Hotel, Paddy O'Neil's, Pat and Kevin’s, Part II Bistro and the Park House restaurant offer a different performer each.

Free Sunday night concerts a 40-year Goderich tradition Sunday nights from late June until Labour Day weekend offer a special summer treat in Goderich when the Harbour Park Summer Concert Series, sponsored by the Goderich Laketown Band, is held.

The Outdoor Summer Concert Series has been a part of summer in Goderich since 1970 when then-band president Don McMillan approached the town council to ask if they’d be able to provide the band with some kind of structure in Harbour Park.

This led, eventually, to the current bandstand.

The concerts have been running every Sunday evening for over 40 years offering audiences the pleasant opportunity to listen to live music outdoors in the cool of the off-lake

breezes while the sun sets slowly over Lake Huron.

All concerts start at 7 p.m. and end as the sun sets. There is no fee, only a goodwill donation.

The Crippled Ducks perform August 5. The concerts make way for the Celtic Festival August 12, then resume August 19 with the Stratford Concert Band. Ayr-Paris Community Band performs August 26 and Whiskey Jack Music Company winds up the season on September 2.

Huron County Museum has a history of its own For 67 years the Huron County Museum, 110 North Street, Goderich has been entertaining and informing visitors to the county and local residents alike with the fascinating story of the county.

It’s a much larger museum today than it was back in 1951 when J.H. Neill used his personal collection, assembled over many years, as the foundation of the museum in a former school.

Today you can see a full-sized Canadian Pacific Railway steam locomotive, the heart of the Main Street display where nearby shop windows give you a glimpse into various businesses from the past, ranging from a printer’s shop to an undertaker’s establishment.

Elsewhere there’s the agriculture gallery featuring equipment from the county’s most important industry, including a spectacular display of farm windmills in front of a massive window. The military gallery shows the county’s role in two World Wars, particularly the second when Huron was home to four training bases for airmen.

You can learn about the arduous voyage early settlers endured and their difficult days in the bush and see how they progressed with early industries and the emerging of urban communities. The role that Lake Huron played in transportation and fishing is explained and the salt industry from its first accidental discovery to the modern industry is highlighted.

There’s plenty to capture the imagination of anyone with an interest in history.

Special exhibits this summer

include Farmtastic! A Celebration of Agriculture in Huron County, running until January 5, 2019.

Discover the story of modern agriculture practices, successes and challenges in Huron County. Learn more about farming, one of the major industries of our county, from perspectives such as those of the generational farm family, retiring farmers, young farmers, migrant farming, and farm business specialists will be investigated.

Until October 31 the Museum is open Monday – Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (until 8 p.m. on Thursdays) and Sunday from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Celebrating sunset with Goderich’s pipe band The Goderich Celtic Blue Highlanders will once again be bidding adieu to the sun on Friday nights in Goderich at the Piping Down the Sun event.

Held at the Rotary Beach, the southern-most beach in Goderich, just outside of the Rotary Wheelhouse, the members of the Celtic Blue Highlanders play their bagpipes through the setting of the sun.

The events run eight Fridays between July 6 and August 24 and originally started out as an idea by former Goderich Tourism Manager Bob Marshall who thought one piper would be nice, but the Celtic Blue Highlanders took it to a whole new level. They committed most of their band.

The event has evolved over the years and now the pipers will march in, play a few tunes and then pipe down the sun.

The event is fun for all ages as children can play games while they enjoy the tunes and older listeners can sit and relax and listen.

The spectacle can also be taken in from the cliffs above at the park at the end of Sunset Drive.

Goderich has Huron’s oldest farmers’ market The Goderich Farmers’ Market is proof that you can teach an old dog new tricks.

As one of the oldest Farmers’

Markets in the area, the event, which has survived relocations due to a tornado and becoming a sidewalk sale in the interim, continues to innovate to create a unique shopping experience.

The market is held on The Square in Goderich from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday until Thanksgiving and brings together more vendors than the average market.

“We have an amazingly broad spectrum of local products,” Goderich Business Improvement Area Manager Susan Armstrong said.

Escape Room offers challenges for groups Escape Room Goderich is a new addition to Canada’s Prettiest Little Town that offers alternative experiences for visitors.

Escape Rooms encourage groups of participants to work together towards a goal of solving the puzzles necessary to unlock the room they are in.

The Goderich location features different scenarios for between two and 10 participants. Smuggler’s Den, a higher difficulty room, fits two to five people, The Nursery, a familyfriendly room, fits two to four people, Viking Curse, a higher difficulty room, allows two to four people and the Wreck Room, a medium- to higher-difficulty offering, has room for up to 10 people.

Groups are given an hour to escape the rooms, and, depending on success and proficiency, groups may get their names on the high score boards.

Typically groups need almost the full hour to get out although some groups have clocked lower times.

Open Tuesday through Sunday, the location also offers a board game café for visitors to Goderich looking for a cool place to relax and play some of the latest and greatest board games.

Special tournaments are held each Sunday which allow visitors to earn points by competing and collect a prize at the end of the season.

Bayfield antique show boasts dozens of dealers Antique lovers by the thousands will have a rare opportunity to indulge their passion when the 33rd annual Bayfield Antique & Collectibles Show and Sale is held at the Bayfield Community Centre.

The show and sale, to be held from August 10-11, will feature dozens of dealers whose specialties range from furniture to postcards, china, glass, sterling silver, all kinds of jewellery, linen, coins, toys, photos and maps and books.

The show and sale begins with the gala preview night from 6-9 p.m. on Friday night, August 10. For a $10 (in advance, $12 at the door) entrance fee, the guests not only get the opportunity to shop, browse, meet and chat with the dealers in a more relaxed atmosphere, but they get a reception with live entertainment and refreshments.

Saturday it’s time for serious browsing and shopping when hundreds of people can be expected to pass through. The doors are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5.

For those who want to take a break from shopping, Trinity Anglican Church operates a café with home-baked goodies and refreshments.

The antique show and sale was inaugurated as a fundraiser by the late Doris Hunter who was an antique lover and member of Bayfield’s Trinity Anglican Church. The proceeds of the sale go a long way to help keep the church’s doors open in these days of declining attendance.

Trinity has a long history. The first Anglican congregation was organized in 1849. Historians think construction of the current building began in 1855.

It takes dozens of volunteers to keep the show running, including everyone from co-ordinators who recruit the dealers throughout the year, to people helping with set up, those who bake the goodies, serve in the café, provide security or collect front door admissions.

Farmers’ Market adds to Bayfield’s tasty tradition Bayfield has its own relaxed way of doing things and that includes the village’s farmers’ market which began in 2014.

The market is nestled in a shady corner of Clan Gregor Square, just steps from the shops, restaurants and art galleries on Bayfield’s tree-lined main street.

cost of one dollar. Forty women cooked up 600 pounds of dry beans along with ingredients to create the meal. There were also wagon-ride tours of local bean fields.

Wrench Benders Car Show attracts classic car lovers The Wrench Benders Car Show, part of the annual Zurich Bean Festival is also an attraction all by itself.

The antique and classic car show, first added in 1987, is now billed as the second largest in Ontario, drawing more than 1,000 hotrods, cars and trucks each year at the ball diamond.

The cars will begin rolling into town on the Friday night, August 24, to take part in the Wrench Benders Cruise Night. The cars will go through Hensall, Exeter, Crediton, and Dashwood and finally end up in Zurich.

There are two routes so you will see all the cars in two runs and both will meet up in Zurich. There will be fireworks and a flame show on the ball diamond after the cruise. If you’re a car owner, there’s no need to pre-register – show up at the gate prior to the 7 p.m. start, with your ride polished and ready to go.

Back in Zurich there will be entertainment throughout the evening with Jamie Baldwin on stage at 7 p.m., Potentially Wasted at 8 p.m. and the Geoff Masse Band at 10:30 p.m.

Midway rides will be in action along Zurich’s downtown streets.

At dusk there will be fireworks at the ball park.

Saturday, August 25 the gates open at 8 a.m. for the car show.

Indoor bike, skate park redesigned for 2018 Rain or shine, there is always a place for more adventurous skaters or cyclists to test out tricks in Huron County thanks to the All In Skatepark in Zurich.

Located in the former Zurich arena, the park boasts ramps, half-pipes, rails and everything else that wheeled athletes need to catch some air and have some fun.

Opened five years ago as of February, the 40,000 square foot indoor riding facility has been the site of continuous upgrades and, thanks to equipment rental and purchase opportunities, is the perfect place for all level of trick skaters and cyclists.

All In representative Derek Fewster said that the entire facility has been redesigned over the past year and there is going to be a focus on overnight and day camps. He said more information about those activities can be found on Facebook.

The centre is currently open Wednesday through Friday, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and noon to 8 p.m. on the

weekends. When the summer starts, the park will be open Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 8 p.m.

Bad Apple Brewing Company Ltd. has a unique story Bad Apple Brewing Company, one of Huron County’s newest craft breweries, began after Jason and Sarah Ingram decided they wanted their children to grow up in Huron County, just as they had.

The property they bought in 2011 was a small apple orchard on Highway 21, along the shores of Lake Huron near Zurich.

Fall came and they suddenly found they had a ton of apples on their hands and no idea what to do with them. So Jason and his dad Sandy decided to start experimenting and creating some interesting hard cider recipes.

Jason also experimented with making his own beer. One thing led to another and now they have their own brewery creating small batches of delicious craft beer and cider beer blends.

Their brands include: West Coast White, Jim’s Juicy IPA, Born In a Barn, and Rusty Hinges. They sell their beer in 750 ml bottles, or a 1.9L growler.

Playhouse home to major musicals Across Ontario many professional summer theatres have opened and disappeared over the years so the fact the Huron County Playhouse will stage its 47th season in 2018 proves the theatre’s remarkable success.

Founder James Murphy had a dream that Grand Bend, as one of Ontario’s most popular resorts, should have a summer theatre. With the help of some enthusiastic local supporters the dream was realized in July 1972 when the first production Two for the Seesaw took place in a huge tent next to the barn on a farm

at the current location, east of Grand Bend off Hwy. 81.

Murphy’s original idea was to turn the old barn into a theatre, but when that proved impractical, they found the solution of building a theatre that looked like a barn. And what a theatre, one of the largest summer theatre facilities in Ontario, seating 650 people with a large stage and orchestra pit so that full-scale Broadway and West End musicals could be staged.

Later a second barn-like theatre, Playhouse II was added seating 300.

This facility mostly hosts smaller scale comedies.

Huron Country Playhouse is now part of the Drayton Entertainment circuit that also has theatres in Drayton, Cambridge, Penatanguishene and St. Jacobs. You can see

Lambton Heritage Museum marks 40 years with special show Lambton Heritage Museum, south of Grand Bend, is celebrating its 40th year of telling the story of the surrounding county.

The museum opened in 1978 with the goal to “preserve and interpret the history of Lambton County�. And it has. From pre-settler days through the Lambton County oil boom to the county’s early industries, Lambton Heritage Museum has a fascinating story to tell.

While there are plenty of historic buildings and plaques on display along Ontario’s West Coast, most date from the time of European settlement in the mid-1800s. At Lambton Heritage Museum you can learn about the region before the settlers made their way into the area.

The museum’s Lambton Gallery tells the early origins of the area that is now Lambton County. It explains, for instance, the endless battles between plant and wind that shape and reshape the sand dunes along Lake Huron.

Moving on to human habitation, displays explain the early occupation of this area by the Attawandaron people who lived in the region between Lakes Huron and Erie more than 400 years ago. They were known as the Neutrals because they refused to get drawn into ongoing wars between the Huron aboriginal tribes around Georgian Bay and the Iroquois south of Lake Erie. But after the English settlers in the U.S. armed the Iroquois with muskets, and the French from Quebec armed the Hurons, the Iroquois wiped out the 20 Stops along the way Mid-Summer 2018

Hurons, and then turned on the peaceful, Attawandarons destroying them.

The exhibit goes on to explain the early years of settlement, the farming and household tools, the mills and other early industries including the story of the county’s role in the early oil industry.

But Lambton Heritage Museum is more than just the indoor displays.

Out back you’ll find a blacksmith shop, a beef-ring slaughterhouse, a church, a school and a home, all fully furnished for the times, as well as two large implement sheds housing a fascinating assortment of agricultural implements. The outdoor buildings are open mid-April to midDecember.

To mark the museum’s own significant 40th year, a special exhibition 40 Years, 40 Objects, Celebrating Lambton’s Past will be on view until October 8.

Until October 31 the museum, eight kilometres south of Grand Bend, is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends and holidays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and students over 13 years of

age, $3 for children 4-12 and free for younger children.

Dark Horse Estate Winery becomes a major Grand Bend attraction Dark Horse Estate Winery opened in Grand Bend in the summer of 2016 and includes a 31,000-square foot facility, the ability to host weddings and special events and, of course, wine.

In just its first year of production, the winery received two silver medals in the 2016 Canadian National Wine Awards. Dark Horse’s Chardonnay and Ice Wine were both honoured.

The winery was founded by John and Sue Ann Rasenberg and it builds on a strong foundation of agritourism that is now booming in Huron County and much of southwestern Ontario.

Originally, the site was a collection of antique vendors that opened in the 1960s. It has grown into a large, open-air market that offers a unique opportunity for people to get fresh air and find unique items.

Exeter Rodeo brings old west ridin’ and ropin’ to town For the 22nd year, Exeter will be home to the biggest rodeo in Huron County on the weekend of August 10-12 when the Exeter Ram Rodeo hits the ring.

The weekend has been a big draw in the county for over two decades and has grown substantially in recent years as part of the Ram Rodeo Series.

A rodeo kick-off party starts things off on the right note on Friday night, but the real action begins on Saturday with a tailgate party featuring a performance by Ty Baynton, a Waterdown native who has shared the stage with the likes of Blake Shelton.

party runs from 2-3:30 p.m. and will be the first of two Baynton performances that day, as he takes to the stage from 6-11 p.m. that night for the main event concert.

The day will also include a sheep scramble, sponsored by the Exeter Lions Club and a loonie search for the kids, sponsored by Crabby Joe’s, before Baynton takes to the stage again that evening.

On Sunday, the Exeter Legion Ladies Auxiliary will be serving up breakfast from 8-11 a.m., followed by the Ram Rodeo again at 2 p.m. (the gates open at noon). Again there will be a sheep scramble and loonie search that day before the weekend draws to a close.

All of the action takes place at the South Huron Recreation Centre and its rodeo grounds on Victoria Street

East in Exeter.

Advance tickets are $20 each for adults, $15 for youth aged six to 12 years old and admission for a child under the age of six is $5. A family pass, which includes two adults and three children, is $60 and then $10 for each additional child.

Exeter Farmers’ Market has beautiful location Few farmers’ markets could boast a more beautiful setting than Exeter Farmers’ Market.

In recent years the market has moved to the delightful horticultural gem of MacNaughton Park in the northern part of the town.

The market still operates Thursdays, as it has from the beginning in 2009 when it was started as an initiative of the local

Business Improvement Area. Today it’s been taken over by The Cultural Collective, a South Huron-based organization working to provide opportunities for artists and cultural workers in South Huron and area.

The market is held Thursday afternoons from 3 to 7 p.m. Shoppers can choose from local produce, baked goods, meat, eggs, preserves and plants while enjoying performances by different local musical groups or stopping to sample the barbecue.

The market opens May 24 this year and goes until October 4. The market has a Facebook page at www.face-book.com/exeterfarmersmarket.

Walking tours show off Exeter’s classic Victorian architecture The Exeter and District Heritage Foundation has published a pamphlet and map that offers two different walking tours of the historic town – one of the downtown business district and one of the town’s classic Victorian homes.

The Foundation is a story in itself, created in 1976 by a group dedicated to saving Exeter’s 1877 Town Hall from demolition. Through the group’s determined vision and fundraising, the restored hall was reopened in 1980. Now it is the focal point of the Main St., located at the corner of Main and Sanders Streets where it has a new neighbour, a dramatic new branch of the Huron County Library.

The downtown walking tour takes in three blocks of Exeter’s long business area starting at the corner of Main and Huron Street West and going north on the west side of the street before crossing over near the town hall and returning on the east side of the street. Featured are 10 locations with paired photos of each building today and what it looked like in much earlier times. Short stories on each building reveal something of life in earlier times such as stores that had 40 or more clerks to serve customers or a hotel that’s now been turned into apartments and retail shops.

features an 11-stop tour of Victorian homes plus stops at the majestic Trivitt Memorial Church and the Exeter United Church, formerly the Bible Christian Church. Several of the homes have connections to early business families such as the Carlings and the Pickards.

Kirkton comes alive with Fall Fair, September 7-9 The hamlet of Kirkton, east of Exeter on the border between Huron and Perth Counties, takes centre stage, September 7-9 when it holds its annual Fall Fair.

The fun begins Friday, September 7 when there’s a live musical performance by Odd Soul Co. The exhibit hall is open from 7-9 p.m. for viewing of the competition entries.

Saturday there’s a parade at 10 a.m.

At the fair grounds there are great events all day long including a remote control car demonstration, pony rides, a kids’ pedal tractor pull, inflatables, hands-on exotics, a Highland Games competition, the Optimist Fun Zone, a baby show and a magician. The fair will also be home to the Kirkton 4-H Dairy Club Achievement Day. At 6:30 there will be a tractor pull.

On Sunday the gates open at 10 a.m.

From 9:30-11:30 a.m. there’s a coffee house at the Community Centre providing an opportunity to socialize while enjoying music and a light breakfast.

Throughout the day there’s fun at the fair grounds with inflatables, a bale maze and the Optimist Fun Zone.

There’s a classic car show sponsored by Dale's Performance Automotive.

At 1 p.m. there’s a demolition derby.

You can buy a weekend pass (Friday to Sunday) for $15.00 in advance from the Kirkton Market.

Friday night admission is $5 as is the Saturday daytime admission. Tickets for the tractor pull in the evening are $10. General admission for Sunday is $10.

South Huron Trail links two popular attractions The South Huron Trail represents a beautiful vista in the southern end of Huron County that provides hikers with options.

The trail consists of a four-kilometre stretch of the MacNaughton-Morrison section that starts at MacNaughton Park in Exeter and the Morrison Dam Conservation Area two kilometres east of Exeter, which forms an eightkilometre trail. However, hikers could simply complete the four-kilometre MacNaughton-Morrison loop if they’re so inclined.

In 2014, the trail celebrated its 10th anniversary and completed a number of projects to help mark the occasion, including the creation of a trail brochure, a DVD and a historical book.

For years, the trail was home to the South Huron Trail Run. This will be the first year in many that the event won’t be run.

MacNaughton Park a small gem of Exeter’s main street Its most popular use may be that people drive by and look — but that’s their first mistake. Exeter’s MacNaughton Park, a labour of love for a community, is a place anyone would love to stop and visit.

It was in the 1980s when the local Lions Club pitched the idea of turning a simple flat parkland located on Hwy 4, north of the downtown core, into a beautifully landscaped area for recreation or relaxation.

Bluewater offers walking, driving tours The Municipality of Bluewater now offers online walking tours of each of its villages (Hensall, Zurich and Bayfield), as well as driving tours of the rural townships of Hay and Stanley.

Community Development Coordinator Karen Rickers explained each of the tours has a unique theme specific to the community. The theme in Zurich, for instance, is “Cradle to Grave” which features several local churches and the history of the convent in the area.

Huron County Plowing Match near Clinton, August 23, 24 This year’s Huron County Plowing Match is set to be held in Central Huron, west of Clinton, August 2324.

Hosted by Stephen Thompson, 80832 Stone School Line, the match will begin with the Junior Day on Thursday, August 23, followed by a day of competition on August 24, ending with the awards banquet later that evening.

The match has served as one of the county’s largest agricultural events of the year for decades, rotating throughout the county based on the home municipality of the Huron County Warden – in 2018 that’s Central Huron’s Jim Ginn.

2015 saw the completion of the 60acre grassland, a habitat created by the Friends of Hullett, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ducks Unlimited, for the preservation of the Eastern Meadowlark, the Bobolink and other grassland species.

From February 1 to June 15, a 400metre buffer zone surrounds the eagle’s nest at the HPWA and provides the birds with an undisturbed environment during breeding season. In 2015 two eaglets successfully hatched.

Hullett Wildlife Area a great spot for bird, nature lovers Visitors who like watching waterfowl and other birds have a unique opportunity at the Hullett Provincial Wildlife Area (HPWA), a 5,420-acres wetland and upland reserve northeast of Clinton.

Situated along the Maitland River between Seaforth and Clinton and one concession north of Highway 8, the HPWA offers marshes, fields and forests for wildlife habitation.

The HPWA is located along the migratory paths of the Atlantic and Mississippi waterfowls, and has two viewing stands that allow visitors to see the birds in the Pintail and Bluebill pools. The Hullett Marsh Waterfowler’s Association also works with other HPWA volunteers and contributors to protect and promote the habitat of the waterfowl.

This year there will be weekly racing beginning at 1:30 p.m. until September 1 with 10 races, and there’s no admission charge or parking fee. Attendance generally ranges from 300-500.

Because Clinton is a small venue than some of the larger tracks such as London, patrons are able to take behind-the-scenes tours with racetrack staff, even going upstairs to the lofty perch of the judges and track announcer.

Clinton Raceway was started by the Clinton Kinsmen and Kinettes who turned its administration over to a volunteer board of directors in 1982.

With the Super Sunday Show offering games, trivia, and prizes between each race, there is a lot of action to keep people of all ages entertained.

Maelstrom Winery and Cidery now offers tours Huron County’s first winery, just outside of Clinton, offers tours of its vineyards by the owners and tastings of any of their five wines, and three ciders.

Catherine and Jim Landsborough and their son Brian pioneered wine making in Huron, when they turned a passion for wine and a difficult piece of land on their farm on Sanctuary Line, just east and south of Clinton, into the county’s first vineyard.

When the vineyard became productive they opened Maelstrom Winery and Cidery several years ago and now have a retail store and hold tours of the vineyard and winery.

Wine tastings are available during store operating hours for groups of fewer than 10 people. If you have 10 or more they ask that you book a tour, that will last 30-75 minutes, by calling or by email.

Tastings and tours are run by the Landsborough family which means questions asked will be answered by the family that started it all.

Clinton Slots: new management, same fun The Clinton Raceway and Slots is now under new ownership and management, but it still invests proceeds back into the industry and into the community.

It was in May, 2017 that Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Limited purchased the slots at Clinton Raceway. The purchase agreement also included the Hanover Raceway, Woodstock Raceway, Dresden Raceway, the Western Fair in London and a casino in Port Edward.

At the time, the company signed a 20-year casino operating and services agreement with the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation.

Seaforth Museum is the product of one visionary collector On the upper floor of the Huron East municipal office sits the Seaforth and Area Museum: a tribute to the community dating back to the late 1800s.

The museum has been operating for over 15 years, after opening on Canada Day, 1999 thanks to the hard work of community volunteers and financial support from the Canadian Millennium Partnership Program and the Town of Seaforth.

The vast majority of the collection once belonged to Frank Sills and is well over 100 years old.

On display will be the best of the community’s bounty when it comes to food, needlework and artwork, among others. There will be several 4-H livestock shows and plenty of activities for the young and the young at heart.

There will be educational entertainment for all ages throughout the day as well as face painting clowns.

Brussels Farmers’ Market gets new home at Four Winds Barn The Brussels Farmers’ Market is poised for a big year in 2018 with its new home at the Brussels Four Winds Barn.

This will be the first time the market will have an indoor home after several years on the village’s

downtown Brussels. It’s been revamped with various stone and wood rooms to turn it into one of Huron County’s foremost wedding and event venues, as well as a yearround home for the Brussels Farmers’ Market and various other businesses.

Construction began in 2016, with many community members taking part in various aspects of the project.

In the time since, Four Winds has already hosted its first wedding and is due to host its grand opening later this summer.

The meeting held its first vendor organizational meeting in late April and is looking to expand upon the number of vendors it has offered in the past.

There will also be weekly food vendors and entertainment at the market, which is carried over from its outdoor days.

Walking tours visit Brussels’ Victorian architecture The village of Brussels has some classic Victorian architecture, both on main street and in the residential area and walking tours help you find these treasures and discover the fascinating history behind the buildings.

Several years ago a group of students from the university of Waterloo visited the village and mapped out two different walking trails. You can find these maps in large displays downtown at the Brussels Foodland.

In the late 1800s Brussels was an industrial centre with a large woolen mill, a planing mill and furniture factory, flax mills, carriage works and even a factory making fire engines.

One of the trails also takes you past the imposing Melville Presbyterian Church (built in 1915), Dunedin Manor, built in 1887 and modelled on Scotland’s Dunedin Castle, and its neighbour, the turreted Leckie House, built by Brussels’ first reeve, John Leckie.

Conservation area, Logan’s Mill offer waterside picnic area The Brussels Conservation Area is one of the county’s most attractive spots to take in a view of the Maitland River. It is classified by the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority as a day-use area with a small reservoir and picnic facilities.

This reservoir, which fills in the summer and creates a beautiful area in the village, has been made possible by the local council recently funding new logs for the Brussels Dam. The site itself has plenty of history.

It is also the site of Logan Mill, which, itself, is looking for a face lift in the near future. A group of dedicated volunteers is currently working on that effort as well.

A mill was first built on the Brussels site in 1859 by William and James Vanstone, but fire destroyed the first mill and a subsequent mill was constructed.

John Logan eventually built the current Logan Mill and put a cement cap on the dam in 1914-1915.

In recent years, the facility has been upgraded to include washroom facilities thanks to the Brussels Optimist Club and the Trillium Foundation. The site now includes walking trails and playground equipment.

Festival of Wizardry comes to Blyth, September 21-23 The Blyth Campground will be magically transformed into a haven for witches and wizards of all school houses this September with the arrival of the Festival of Wizardry.

The Festival is in its second year, in Blyth, third year over all and last year drew 9,000 participants to the village.

New this year on Friday and Saturday is The Borealis School of Wizardry which offers aspiring

witches and wizards courses on Defence Against Dark Magic, Divination, Magic Animal Care and Potions. Each student will be sorted into one of the following houses: Rougarou, Yelth, Mishipeshu and Muine. Each house has their own common room and corresponding activities and entertainment.

The festival will feature professional Quidditch teams from Quidditch Canada competing in the Perdue’s Cup Tournament.

Music will be performed by “Wizard Rock” bands such as The Lovegoods and the Dandies. There are costume contests, photo booths, vendor tents, The Great Hall for all ages featuring themed food and drinks, another area with themed alcoholic drinks for those 19 and over, informative and parody panels, and workshops and celebrity autographs including Bonnie Wright who played Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter films.

Local businesses will also get in on the action, selling themed-items and coming up with special, magical creations for the fans of fictional

wizardry set to come to the village.

Artisans Market adds variety to downtown Blyth After years of doing without a farmers’ market, Blyth has a new Artisans and Farmers’ Market for the summer of 2018.

Organized by the Blyth Business Improvement Area, the market has set up shop for this summer. The object, says Deb Sholdice, who is in charge of the market for the BIA, is to animate the village’s downtown.

The market offers an eclectic blend of food and arts and crafts with everything from flipflops to ice cream. The number of vendors has been growing steadily since the market began in the spring.

The emphasis, Sholdice says, is on providing a total experience with vendors encouraged to create their products such as pottery and jewellery right on the spot.

Entertainers fill the downtown with music to add to the experience.

The market is held from 4-8 p.m.

on Thursdays in the parking lot of the Blyth Christian Reformed Church on Queen Street south of King Street.

Cowbell Brewing Co. becomes an instant destination Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company has made quite a name for itself across the province recently, despite being open to the public for less than a year.

Not only are the beers produced by the Blyth-based brewery sweeping through liquor stores across the province, but its Blyth home farm has proven to be a destination for tens of thousands since it opened last August.

The farm is located on 111 acres just south of Blyth. It features a closed-loop water system and a carbon-neutral model that has been honoured with numerous awards since its construction. Plans are also in the works to create a large outdoor amphitheatre to host festivals and concerts throughout the summer.

Tens of thousands have made their way through Henry’s Hall (named for Henry Blyth, the founder of the village) for dinner, while many others have stopped in for a pint of beer and a tour of the facility, led by one of the company’s chief storytellers.

The facility is also equipped with a fully-stocked general store, featuring beer and other merchandise and Threshers Hall, which has already played host to several weddings.

The railway happened to run beside Blyth Brook as it passed through the village (in fact the river was actually relocated a few feet north back in 1907 to make room for the freight yards) so it makes a pleasant place for a stroll or a quiet place to escape to contemplate nature.

There are also kiosks that explain the importance of Blyth Brook and the history of the railway.

Blyth Greenway Trail is part of the Guelph-to-Goderich (G2G) now being developed which allows hikers to travel on a groomed trail all the way from Guelph to Lake Huron.

Young entrepreneur offers bike tours of Blyth Reece Sparling of Blyth has taken his passion for cycling and applied it to his hometown with the creation of Blyth Bike Tours.

The 16-year-old Sparling is hoping to have a storefront open just north of Memorial Hall soon and his website, blythbiketours.com, is now operational.

Sparling says that he and his family have taken a number of organized bike tours over the years in cities like Chicago, Washington D.C. and Seattle and felt that, with all of the tourism and development ongoing in Blyth, such a tour would be a good fit for the village.

There will be two tour options. The first will be a 90-minute tour of the village that begins and ends at Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company, which his father co-owns. The second will last between two-and-a-half and three hours. It will begin at Sparling’s storefront at 441 Queen Street and the tour will be split into two sessions with a lunch at the brewery in between.

There will also be an option for private group tours which must be booked one week in advance. For those tours, he said groups can bring their own bikes and helmets, whereas on the public tours, the company can provide bikes and helmets for tour participants.

Blyth is a centre for Canadian theatre The village of 1,000 people has an outsized role in theatre in Canada, having produced more new Canadian plays in the past 43 years than nearly any theatre in Canada.

When villagers wanted to honour the dozens of local men who gave their lives in battle in World War I, they decided to build Blyth Community Memorial Hall. The hall includes a gem of a theatre which by 1975 was seldom used. But local residents saw an opportunity to bring the exploding theatre scene in Canada to a rural location.

Because there were few plays written for rural audiences, the Blyth Festival began producing new scripts on rural themes. schools were closed and students bussed to Maitland River Elementary School in Wingham. Fair organizers have adapted to the changing times, however, and the fair goes on.

Annually, the event features 4-H competitions including livestock events, local students’ artwork and agricultural accolades and special events including on-site demonstrations and meals and snacks.

Students from across the northern part of Huron County attend and kick the event off with a parade through the side streets of Belgrave.

Tour explores Alice Munro’s literary influences Even before Alice Munro won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2013, fans from around the world were travelling to Huron County to absorb the sense of “Munro country”. A self-guided tour of her hometown of Wingham lets visitors see some of the locations that shaped Munro’s upbringing or appeared in her stories.

Just outside the North Huron Museum (directly across from the Wingham Town Hall), which was the town’s post office when Alice Laidlaw was growing up, is the Alice Munro Literary Garden which was opened in 2002 and provides a quiet corner on the busy street with a bench and a walk with the names of her books carved into marble slabs.

By following the tour you can see the hospital where she was born on June 10, 1932, the location of the schools she attended, the town hall where she performed in a school operetta in 1946, and on to Lower Town where she grew up.

The Alice Munro Literary Garden is located at 273 Josephine Street.

Lucknow’s 10th Music in the Fields attracts thousands What began a decade ago as a small but ambitious initiative by the Lucknow Kinsmen to raise some money for the community has now grown into one of the biggest annual country concerts in Ontario.

This year the Lucknow Kinsmen will be hosting the 10th annual Music in the Fields. Concerts will span three days and bring some of the biggest names in country music to the small village.

In its first year, Music in the Fields attracted just over 1,000 people and now routinely attracts nearly 10,000.

This rapid growth has allowed the Kinsmen to purchase their own grounds for the event, dubbed Graceland Festival Grounds as a nod to former owner Grace Hopf.

Over the years, the Kinsmen have invested over $1 million into the community as a result of the success 42 Stops along the way Mid-Summer 2018

of the event. This year, the proceeds from the event will be donated to Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

This year’s event begins on Thursday, August 23 with George Canyon, who recently headlined last year’s International Plowing Match held in Walton. The night will then wrap up with a special 10th anniversary after-party with DJ Johnny Rivex.

On Friday, August 24, Canadian country music sensation Brett Kissel will take to the stage. The Juno Award-winning artist will be joined on the stage by brother/sister duo The Reklaws and Bowmanville native Meghan Patrick.

Brett Eldredge will perform on the Music in the Fields stage on Saturday, August 25, along with Gord Bamford, Aaron Pritchett, Aaron Goodvin and Leaving Thomas.

Camping on the site is available and both weekend passes and singleday tickets are available.

155th Lucknow Fair coming up Sepember 14-16 Lucknow, straddling the border between Huron and Bruce Counties, will hold its 155th Fall Fair Friday, September 14 to Sunday, September 16.

Friday the arena opens at 6 p.m. so people can see which entries won in the homecraft competition. There will be a street hockey tournament in the front parking lot and a Tug-oWar at the volleyball court.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 7:15 then the ambassador competition will take place as well as a cake and pie auction.

Kobbler Jay the Eccentric Juggler will give two performances in the front parking lot at 6 p.m. and again at 8 p.m.

There will be a Family Fun Zone on the arena floor offering inflatables, carnival games, face painting, little tykes’ play area, a sundae bar, pumpkin decorating and more.

Saturday will see livestock competitions throughout the day

beginning with the 4-H beef, dairy and open sheep show at 9:30 a.m.

The fall fair parade will go down main street at 11 a.m.

Meanwhile there will be live entertainment on the main stage with Slim Pickens. There will be radio controlled truck demonstrations in the ag building.

At 11:30 the light horse show will begin at the ball diamond. The Family Fun Zone will reopen on the arena floor.

At 12:30 the pedal tractor pull will begin. At 1:15 the baby show will take place on the main stage while outdoors there will be log sawing, bale rolling and bale throwing contests.

At 2:30 p.m., Shemanigans, a kids’ sing-along will be held on the main stage.

Saturday night beginning at 7 p.m. there will be a cocktail hour and chicken wings will be on offer, leading up to Mastermind the Hypnotist at 8:30 p.m.

For younger people there will be a youth dance at the Lucknow Legion hall from 7:15-10 p.m.

Sunday morning the fair breakfast will be held in the Paul Henderson Memorial Hall from 8:30 until 11 a.m. At 10 a.m. there will be a community church service on the arena floor. From 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the Wee-line Zipline will be operating in the parking lot. At 12 noon there will be a pet show in the gazebo.

Bruce-Huron Produce Auction a unique event North of Lucknow in the summer and fall months there’s a unique event when the Bruce-Huron Produce Auction is held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays until Thanksgiving.

There’s a large Old Order Mennonite population north of Lucknow and an Amish settlement south of the village. Many of these farm families grow fruits and vegetables but because they depend on horses and buggies, they are limited in how far they can travel to find markets for their produce. So the auction was set up in 2011 to bring buyers for wholesale companies,

the summer include a concert in association with Goderich’s Celtic Festival on August 8, an August 18 performance by Stratford’s Strings ’n Traps, which plays everything from old rock to country and contemporary folk, and the Celtic Blue Highlanders’ Ceilidh on September 28.

The auction is set up to attract buyers of larger quantities so isn’t really meant for regular shoppers, but it makes for a fascinating peek into the small scale food business.

Auctions begin at 3 p.m. The auction barn is located at 733 Kairshea Avenue – that’s three corners north of Lucknow and then go east for two kilometres.

Beautiful, historic church becomes community centre Rural Ontario was built by people coming together to make their communities better. That spirit lives on in the lakeshore hamlet of Kingsbridge where the community organized to save St. Joseph’s Catholic Church when it was closed in 2012.

Jennifer Miltenburg is a director on the committee formed to renovate the former church which now operates as the Kingsbridge Centre.

She says the church was the only meeting place for the community, and they weren’t prepared to see that disappear. They formed a charitable organization, bought the church from the diocese for $1 and set about renovating the building and bringing it up to current code.

When the Centre opened, about 300 residents of Ashfield-ColborneWawanosh gathered to celebrate.

Barn quilts decorate hundreds of buildings

Barn quilts, like this one for the Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby Association at Blyth Campgrounds can be seen around the county.

One of the lasting legacies of 2017’s International Plowing Match in Walton is the trail of over 160 barn quilts it inspired throughout the county.

Local business owners Tim and Donna Prior sponsored a barn quilt competition as part of the IPM’s beautification program and as a result barn quilts have been erected on homes and barns in all corners of the community.

Many of the barn quilts are situated in the centre of the county, ranging north from Hensall to Seaforth and Clinton through to Blyth, Walton and Brussels in the north, but there are barn quilts in all corners of the county, including north of Fordwich in the north, to near Port Albert in the west and Exeter and Dashwood areas in the south.

Barn quilts are often eight feet squared panels of wood that have been expertly painted and hung upon barns or homes or erected on lawns in rural areas. They may reflect favourite farm equipment brands, family heritage or history, all in an artistic manner that has become the envy of many.

The quilts were brought together in a book that was sold out at press time but the Huron trail is also documented as part of the Ontario Barn Quilt Trail and can be found and mapped at barnquilttrails.ca.

Shortly thereafter, in mid-summer of 2017, the Sparling family in Blyth began Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company, something entirely different – a huge destination craft brewery in a building modeled on a typical Huron County barn, with a restaurant, tours and spacious grounds that will host special events in an amphitheatre. Its beers are also sold through LCBO stores across the province. (See Blyth pages for more information.)

In the past few months have come two new small, personally run craft breweries. River Road Brewing & Hops is a farm-based brewery, just outside of Bayfield (see Bayfield pages for details). Bad Apple Brewing Company, on Hwy. 21 nears St. Joseph is located on a farm with an apple orchard (see details in Zurich pages). It bring the total to six breweries and two wineries – at last count but who knows what might be coming just around the corner?

Huron has become such a magnet for beer and wine lovers that special tasting tours are beginning to be offered.

Take up the challenge A look at the signature holes at Huron’s 10 golf courses

Each of Huron’s courses has a special reason for you to remember it.

Huron County offers 10 golf courses of varrying lengths and challenges. Here are a few highlights of each.

Bayview Golf Club Bayview Golf Club is an 18-hole, Par 72 course located on Hwy. 21 near Zurich that boasts a total length

of just over 6,200 yards.

Golfers will find water to intimidate and challenge them on 11 of the course’s 18 holes as small ponds and creeks meander throughout the grounds.

It boasts four Par 3 holes and three Par 5 holes on the way to a total

round of 6,215 yards from the blue tees.

One hole to watch out for is the Par 5, 13th hole. It’s been described as a fun hole that presents a great risk/reward second shot. If you make a good shot, you’ll be in good shape, but if you don’t, you’ll be in trouble.

With water in front and to the right of the green and bush to the left, a firm, straight approach shot is crucial.

Located north of Grand Bend on Hwy. 21, the course offers power carts, club rentals and a pro shop.

Bluewater Golf Course Bluewater Golf Course is a targetstyle nine-hole course that has been described as challenging. The course features plenty of bush with a lot of sand traps and water hazards along the way.

As a nine-hole course, to give it a new look for a second time around, it offers a multi-tee system that can transform the course significantly the second time, making it play nearly 400 yards longer for a total of 6,122 yards.

The changes are the most dramatic on the course’s ninth hole, which turns a 395-yard Par 4 to a 473-yard Par 5 the second time around.

One of the course’s most challenging holes, however, is the seventh, which is a dog leg that features a very demanding green with trees on either side of an approach shot towards the hole.

Bluewater Golf Course is located on Bluewater Highway just north of Bayfield. It offers power carts, club rentals, a pro shop and a snack bar.

The course is open from April 1 to the end of October.

The course also features an adjacent campground that’s home to over 100 seasonal sites, open from May 1 to the end of October. In addition, there are over 25 adult yearround living sites.

Exeter Golf Club Exeter Golf Club is a nine-hole golf course located in Centralia and it measures just over 3,000 yards. It’s located two kilometres east of Highway 4 on County Road 6.

It’s a Par 36, nine-hole course that features a charming clubhouse, a converted century-old barn that is now home to The Barn restaurant and pub.

Water hazards make the course a challenging one, as the course’s winding creek comes into play on five of the course’s nine holes (holes one, two, four, five and six).

One hole to watch out for is the fourth, which is a pretty hole that makes golfers decide whether to drive to the creek or over it. The hole then ends with a framed green.

The course offers a driving range, power carts and club rentals.

Goderich Sunset Golf Club Goderich Sunset Golf Club is located just seven kilometres north of Goderich on Highway 21. It features an 18-hole regulation course, a ninehole Par 3 course and a driving range equipped with a practice putting green and chipping area.

The club also features a clubhouse, a snack bar and a patio, in addition to power carts, club rentals and a fullystocked pro shop.

The club also boasts professional lessons with Ashley Gravett, who graduated with honours from the Professional Golf Course Management course at Georgian College. She became a golf professional and a member of the PGA of Canada in 2014.

One of the most demanding holes on the course is the ninth. Golfers have to drive to the top of the fairway hill with a bunker on the left and trees on the right. Shooting into the wind, the hole demands a straight tee shot and then presents a challenging approach shot into a difficult green.

Ironwood Golf Club Ironwood Golf Club is located at 72 Wellington Street in Exeter. It features over 6,100 yards of rolling landscape that has been described by many as being very user-friendly.

The course is 18 holes and a Par 71.

The course, now in its 52nd season, has recently become part of the GolfNorth family, which operates 31 golf courses across Ontario.

Those who know the course well have said that the seventh hole is the key to the round, despite the fact that the 12th hole is the course’s signature hole. Depending on the wind and the temperature, getting over the water is going to be the biggest challenge in playing the seventh hole.

You can also see the hole from the clubhouse, so many golfers will finish their round and watch golfers take on the challenge while they enjoy a post-round beverage.

Maitland Country Club The Maitland Country Club in Goderich features a picturesque ninehole golf course that’s artistically threaded through the scenic Maitland River valley. The course is both scenic and challenging and the club also features tennis and curling.

The club offers a fully-stocked pro shop, power carts, pull carts, club rentals and CPGA golf lessons.

One of the course’s most demanding holes is the eighth, one of the course’s two Par 5 holes, which is a challenging dog leg right that can test even the most experienced golfers.

The nine-hole course is a Par 34 with a total length of over 5,600 yards. It’s open from April to November, from 8 a.m. until dark.

Oakwood Resort Oakwood Resort has plenty to offer

at its location just north of Grand Bend on Highway 21.

The resort offers a 126-room hotel as well as a newly-built pub to complement the 18-hole, Par 70 golf course.

The 5,356-yard course is the heart of the operation, which dates back to the 1920s. The course also offers a fully-stocked pro shop, lessons and memberships. It is open from 7 a.m. to dusk from April through to October.

The location also boasts practice putting greens, tournament packages, tee time reservations, private lessons, carts and a driving range.

One of the course’s most challenging holes is the 13th, which includes a green that has been described as being sloped and very fast.

Seaforth Golf Club The Seaforth Golf Club boasts a mature and challenging golf experience on its course. It is one that has been recognized on the national stage, playing host to the Seaforth Country Classic for over a decade.

The event began as a PGA of Canada tour event, but has since partnered with the Great Lakes Tour.

This year, the tournament, scheduled for the first weekend in August, will break new ground in hosting two concurrent competitions, one featuring 36 male professionals and the other featuring 36 female professionals. The winner of each tournament will win an identical purse.

The 18-hole, Par 71 course measures nearly 6,300 yards from the Highland tees and offers all of the standard amenities, including a pro shop, power carts and lessons.

As far as the course is concerned, the 15th hole is one that’s been identified as a challenge in any round.

The hole presents a risk/reward decision on the approach shot with water both in front and behind the green. In order to land safely on the green, a golfer’s approach shot has to come in high and with plenty of control.

The course has been family-run by

the Doig family for well over 50 years and it is open from 7 a.m. until dark throughout the warm season.

Wingham Golf and Curling Club Wingham Golf and Curling Club is located at 40292 Jamestown Road, south east of Wingham and it features a Par 35, nine-hole golf course, in addition to its restaurant, patio and curling facilities.

The course’s signature hole is its final hole, the ninth, which can result in a high number on your scorecard if you’re not careful.

However, many who play the course regularly say that the very first hole really sets the tone for the rest of the round.

The hole, which has been described as tough, but fair, really rewards precision. If you hit the ball too far, it

will end up in the water, but if you hit it too short, it will end up in the sand. With such a tough hole right off the bat, the Wingham golf course challenges golfers from their very first swing of the club.

The club also offers a driving range, carts, club rentals, a pro shop as well as lessons. It’s open from April until mid-October.

The course has recently made an attempt to bolster its calendar of activities, hosting special dinners and events throughout the year to keep the club busy year-round.

Woodlands Links Golf Club Woodlands Links is a golf course where it’s said that no two holes play alike. It’s a shotmaker’s course where water comes into play on 11 of its 18 holes. Also making it challenging are 28 strategically-

placed bunkers and natural rough running along the well-manicured fairways.

The championship Par 72 links course is 18 holes and over 6,600 yards long and it boasts a full practice facility as well.

The course’s ninth hole is said to be one of its most challenging, making it tough to make par on it.

The hole calls for a strategicallyplaced drive along the uphill fairway that then turns into a steep downhill where everything kicks to the left. It calls for a fade from lefthanded players or a draw from the righthanders.

How sweet it is!

New facility adds juice to Huron County’s menu With its craft wineries and cider makers and breweries, Huron County has plenty of products for those wanting to sample an alcoholic drink but a new venture means there’s a wide variety of juices available too.

The Beyerlein family at the Bayfield Berry Farm has made an investment of over $1 million into a new processing plant that is allowing them package their multi-blend ciders in bags and boxes versus the traditional jugs.

The advantage is health, convenience and shelf life.

“We were looking to make a fresher product that keeps well,” says Marlene Beyerlein, who manages the family business.

The new equipment is used in the wine packaging industry and was imported from Europe. It allows the Berry Farm to move away from packaging their apple, apple-pear, apple-blueberry and other apple combination ciders out of two litre jugs and into three litre bags and boxes.

Air exposure to juice in jugs means potassium sorbate has to be added to the juice to preserve it. Even then, the juice has a limited shelf life.

With the bag and box technology, no air enters the packaging which eliminates the need for chemical additives.

Along with the bag and box machine, the Beyerleins updated their processing equiment to speed the process of making juices and jams.

Previously, they could make 12 litres of jam in the store kitchen. The new kettle allows them to make 80 litres of jam at a time.

New lifters, filters, crushers, holding tanks, pasteurizers, kettles and fillers were installed as well.

“We do require one more person to run and wash the equipment but it is much more efficient,” says Marlene.

T h e expansion has been a plan of Fritz Beyerlein, Marlene’s father, to maximize profitability out

of damaged apples from the berry farm’s apple orchard. The business needed to make an end product with the apples and cider was a natural choice. However, cider in jugs has to be used in a few weeks. The new technology allows quicker processing of apples into a cider that has a shelf life of over a year in the new bag and box technology.

The Bayfield Berry Farm is a multi-faceted business selling berries, jams, breads and other goods at local farmers’ markets. They also have an on-site store, cafe and wholesale market their produce.

Show-stopping entertainment Huron County is home to 2 of Ontario’s largest, longest-running summer theatres

The New Canadian Curling Club has been the smash comedy hit of the Blyth Festival’s 2018 season.

For more than 40 years, Huron County has been a centre of attraction for professional summer theatre in Ontario with two of the larger summer companies producing work on four stages.

The Huron Country Playhouse and the Blyth Festival have taken different paths to reach their success but both have made their mark on audiences and within the industry.

BLYTH FESTIVAL: Beginning in 1975 in historic Blyth Memorial Community Hall the Blyth Festival aimed its programing at the local audience and so because there weren’t many plays about rural Canadians, it had to create plays. The Festival has since become famous for new plays about Canadian, and particularly local and rural, themes.

Still, many of these plays have gone on to be seen by audiences across Canada and around the world.

There have been more than 120 world premieres.

The season: Because the Festival runs on a repertory system, all but one of this season’s productions are still available in early August.

Crawford’s latest comedy The New

Canadian Curling Club kicked off the Festival’s main season and it’s his best script since his first play, the national hit Stag and Doe. Set in a small town curling rink, the play features new Canadians from China, India, Syria and Jamaica who have been invited to “Learn to curl”

introductory lessons as a welcoming gesture by the local community.

Unfortunately the woman who organized the outreach event falls and breaks her hip and can’t carry out the lessons. Instead the instructor becomes Stuart, a former champion curler who is now the custodian at the curling club and who, unfortunately, has some impolitic opinions about immigrants.

It’s a very funny, and ultimately heart-warming play. The cast is excellent but Lorne Kennedy as Stuart and Omar Alex Khan as Anoopjeet Singh, the clumsy assistant manager at the local Tim Hortons, often threaten to steal the show.

The New Canadian Curling Club plays in repertory until August 23.

A second world premiere at Blyth is Judith: Memories of a Lady Pig

Farmer, Heather Menzies’ adaptation of Aritha Van Herk’s novel Judith.

Georgina Beaty plays Judith, who buys a pig farm with an inheritance from her parents after earlier turning them down when they wanted her to take over the family farm. Now, dealing with their loss and the end of an ill-fated affair with her boss back in the city, she’s looking for a new start.

Beaty is excellent as Judith and so is Nathan Howe as the young neighbour who keeps insisting on helping her even when she says she doesn’t want or need help. Still, there are long moments when little seems to be happening on stage that make you wish the script was more tightly written.

The story of the rebellion that nearly made Canada a republic is told in 1837: The Farmers’ Revolt which opens August 3 and runs until September 15. It’s a return to its roots for this story in a way since the play was rehearsed and collectively created by Theatre Passe Muraille in 1974 in Blyth Memorial Hall. The theatre at that point was closed to the public because of structural deficiencies in the roof (which was soon replaced).

A young, diverse cast tackles the play this time around telling the story of farmers so fed up with the selfserving Family Compact elite of the colony that they’re driven to take up their muskets and attempt to overthrow the government.

Collective creations, where the actors and director research and create the show themselves, are a big part of Blyth’s summer, beginning with a remount of last year’s hit The Pigeon King back in June, continuing with 1837: The Farmers’ Revolt and winding up with Wing Night at the Boot. For months the cast and director Severn Thompson have been digging up stories from the past and

El Camino hike celebrates Maitland Trail While many people hike the Maitland Trail between Goderich and Auburn alone or in a small group, there’s one event each year that becomes a joyous gathering of those who love hiking.

The El Camino hike takes two days (September 29-30 this year) to cover the 49 km. from the head of the trail near Auburn, along the beautiful, winding route of the lower Maitland River to Goderich. Hikers will traverse narrow trails, wide 50 Stops along the way Mid-Summer 2018

rambling trails, hills both up and down, through forests, past farmland, river vistas, autumn meadows, towering forests. They may see wildlife: from toads, salamanders and snakes to ravens, robins and majestic bald eagles.

The event begins with an informal get-together on Friday night, and each day starts off with an oatmeal breakfast bar at the Benmiller Community Hall. Saturday night there’s a harvest supper at the

Goderich Legion.

There are different options for the length of trails hikers want to tackle and shuttles will take hikers to the starting points each day.

Those who want to take the hike need to register by September 15.

Those who want to be part of the Harvest Supper need to register by September 8.

Bayfield-area facility offers unique water adventures Windmill Lake Wake and Eco Park, a newer attraction to Huron County’s tourism landscape, is offering more than just wakeboarding and paddling experiences with its annual Wind and Waves Outdoor Eco Festival.

Scheduled every August long weekend, the event features live music, vendors, attractions, beverage gardens and of course, wakeboarding and paddling.

The event is a three-day affair, running August 4-6 with on-site camping and bunkie rentals available.

Co-owner Jen Pate said the event includes live music on Saturday and a film screening on Sunday night with the professional wake board competition being held on Monday.

Other levels of competition are held over the weekend including Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and pro classes.

Pate said the event draws riders from all over the United States and Canada as well as from other countries.

While the event is sure to be a great experience, Windmill Lake offers a unique tourism experience all summer long with wakeboard and paddleboard instruction and experiences.

Art and theatre in partnership Blyth Festival Art Gallery brings art to theatre-goers`

Huron County artist William Creighton was one of the members of the Huron Society of Artists. His painting of an orchid will be part of In Retrospect.

When James Roy founded the Blyth Festival in 1975, he wanted the Festival to be more than just a theatre so by the second season, an art display was set up in the basement/lobby of Blyth Memorial Hall.

Now, 43 summers later, the Blyth Festival Art Gallery offers three professional shows each year.

Until August 18, the gallery is presenting In Retrospect, an exhibition in various media by a group of artists whose professional collective, the Huron Society of Artists, dissolved over 20 years ago.

The final show which runs from August 24 to September 15, is a show of whimsical marionette puppets and sculptures, titled We’ve Been Here for So Long – the Huron County Show. Gemma James-Smith creates the pieces as caricatures of notable local residents and historical figures.
