The club first dedicated the village’s new Lions Friendship Arch at the intersection of Blyth Road and Donnybrook Line followed by a special meeting and dinner at the Auburn Community Memorial Hall. This spring the Auburn and District Lions Club celebrated the 40th anniversary of its formation, dating back to its charter date of May 18, 1977, which was just under a month after the first recorded meeting. However, last week, the club held an official celebration on June 21 to mark the 40th anniversary of the club’s charter night, which was held on June 25, 1977. That night, the club installed a new member, installed its new officers for the coming year and also dedicated a Lions Club Friendship Arch in the community of Auburn at the intersection of Blyth Road and Donnybrook Line. A special invitation-only dinner and Lions Club celebration was also held that night at the Auburn Memorial Community Hall. The Lions Club was formed in the spring of 1977, with the first recorded meeting of the club held on April 20 at the Auburn Memorial Community Hall. The Blyth Lions Club served as the Auburn club’s sponsoring club and appointed long-time Blyth Lion Charlie Shaw as the club’s Guiding Lion. Going above and beyond his duties as a Guiding Lion, Shaw would attend all club meetings and functions in that first year, providing invaluable guidance for the charter members along the way. At the time, Lions International was pushing for the formation of more clubs across the province. It was this push that resulted in the formation of the Londesboro and District Lions Club that same year with sponsorship help from the Blyth club as well. Charter member Bud Chamney says there were plenty of men at the time who were willing to join with no motivation other than they wanted to help make their community a better place to live. Fred Lawrence was elected as the club’s charter president and the club’s charter night was held in Blyth on June 25, 1977. The first

installment of the Auburn and District Lions Club included 36 members that night. Seven charter members remain with the club to this day: Marinus Bakker, Steve Campbell, Bud Chamney, Doug Chamney, Eldon Chamney, Jim Schneider and Bob Worsell. And while they may not be charter members, many of the club’s 27 current members have been with the club for decades. Walter Marchl has been a member for 38 years and Bill Robinson has been a member for 36 years. Ken Grigg, Tony Martens, Ben Miller and Bill Seers have all been members for over 20 years, while Edgar Daer, Jim Whytock and Lloyd Morley have been members for over 15 years. The Auburn and District Lions Club got to work immediately in that year, hosting a food booth at Blyth’s centennial celebration and then again at Pluc’Kin Fest in Clinton. Bakker says that Lions Club members themselves built that first food booth, which was hot in the summers and didn’t provide much ventilation in those days. While Lions members were busy travelling to neighbouring communities and spreading the word, the work soon began in their home community as well, as the club undertook a massive transformation of the village’s ball park. Thanks to the support of the community and its members through numerous fundraisers, the club was able to direct much of those funds towards the ball park, which remains a focal point of the community and its residents to this day. The club worked to raise the funds to install lighting at the ball diamond. The park would become one of the club’s most ambitious projects, which included the pouring of an asphalt pad that’s now used for basketball and street hockey, as well as the installation of playground equipment, washrooms, bleachers and fencing.
The park, which is located next to the Auburn Hall, now includes an off-leash dog run and is regarded as the social centrepiece of the village. In 1983, the club sponsored a Leo Club for the community to help inspire and encourage local youth to volunteer. The endeavour, however, was short-lived as membership dwindled and the club was eventually disbanded just one year later. As with any service organization, fundraising ideas come and go with the times and the Auburn and District Lions Club has been no different. Over the years, the club has spearheaded fundraisers such as dances, ball tournaments, bingo nights, card parties, cash lotteries, rummage sales and film nights to name a few. Currently, the club’s biggest fundraisers over the course of the year are its monthly pancake breakfasts, which typically bring in between 250 and 300 diners per month, the community birthday calendar and hockey and baseball draws, which now generate much of the funds the club redistributes back throughout the community. The club remained active in the community through the 1990s. First, there was the installation of the “Welcome to Auburn” sign in 1991, which includes a weather station. The sign has greeted many visitors over the years and remains a staple of the community. In 1994, the club began another of the largest projects in its history with the establishment of Manchester Riverside Park, a green space rehabilitation project located along the Maitland River at the south entrance to the village. Over the years the club has placed picnic tables, benches and a picnic shelter at the park, in addition to planting numerous trees. The club also owns a large variety of health aids that are available to residents who need them free of charge including walkers, wheelchairs, crutches and canes. In addition, the club contributes to dozens of worthwhile causes throughout the world every year through Lions International. This is done in addition to contributions to local sports and school organizations, youth activities and local health and social assistance programs. The club has also worked for decades with the Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby Association to help with dusk-to-dawn security at its annual reunion in Blyth. The Lions have also partnered with other local Lions Clubs to host beer tents at Huron County Plowing Matches and International Plowing Matches in the county over the years. Lion Ken Grigg served as the Zone 3 South Chair in 2000/2001, while Steve Campbell was the Zone Chair in 1994/1995 and again in 2008/2009. He would then advance to be the Region 3 Chair in 1998/1999. Lion Ben Miller was the first member of the Auburn and District club to advance to the position of District Governor. Miller held many Executive positions before becoming the District A-9 Governor in 2004/2005. Members of the club celebrated their milestone anniversary with the dedication of a Lions Friendship Arch in the village, followed by a special dinner for club members, their spouses and dignitaries from other local Lions Clubs. The arch has been placed thanks to the generosity of long-time Auburn resident
