Man arrested for disorderly conduct at Buford fast food restaurant

BUFORD — Gwinnett County Police responded to a call about a suspicious person at an area fast-food restaurant � The incident occurred at the KFC located at 4368 Buford Drive in Buford, Ga on August 12
Upon arrival, officers located the suspicious person who was identified as Nigel Mosley, age 24 of Lawrenceville He told officers that he went to the KFC and while trying to order food, he was locked out of the restaurant and could not enter the dining room doors � A restaurant employee told officers that Mosley was banging on the dining room doors and that he went over to inform Mosley to use the drive-thru
window because the dining room had already closed Mosley then started calling the employee names and even tried to take a swing at the employee � Ten minutes later, Mosley comes up to the drive-thru window on foot screaming at the employees � The employee attempted to lock the window but that Mosley was holding it open like he was trying to get into the restaurant At that point, the employee told him that he was going to call 9-1-1 Mosley then left the window�
Officers verified the employee’s version of the events by viewing surveillance video� It showed him yelling and screaming at employees at the drive-thru window The video also showed Mosley trying to open the sliding window to go through the window The manager could be seen attempting to close and lock the window while other employees were frightened enough to run to the backroom of the restaurant � After viewing the video, Mosley was placed under arrest for disorderly conduct He was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail at 10:57 p m and was released hours later on bond in the amount of $140 �

Hall County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 42-year-old Micah John Slabiak of Flowery Branch on August 24 after responding to a call for service at approximately 4:45 p�m� when an employee found a phone in the air vent of the

Micah John Slabiak, age 42 of Flowery Branch was arrested for allegedly leaving a phone recording in an employee bathroom at Margaritaville.

After the phone was removed from the vent, management determined the phone belonged to Slabiak, an employee at that time When confronted with the allegation, Slabiak attempted to flee on foot but was detained by staff members until deputies arrived�
According to the preliminary investigation, two victims have been captured by the phone’s video Slabiak was arrested and booked into the Hall County Jail� He was released on Monday afternoon, August 26, on a $9,200 bond� The case remains under investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division of the Hall County Sheriff’s Office

An officer arrived on the scene to find the front door plexiglass had been damaged The officer observed items from the store
Purohit let the officer into the store Once inside the store, the officer stated that he saw items on the floor and counter The cash register and cash drawer were also on the floor of the store�
Video footage showed that at approximately 2:15 a�m�, a white male, around six feet tall, 170 lbs wearing a gray hoodie and black pants come onto the property At 2:23 a m the video shows the male enter the business Once inside the male is observed loading an assortment of items into a cardboard box After just a couple of minutes, the male exited the store� The male left on foot from the location

Historic preservation is not just about preserving buildings, it is also about preserving a community’s stories� These stories add to a community’s character and can sometimes outlast a building or a physical reminder of the past This past month, Sugar Hill resident Darrell Pruitt began the difficult but very important task of interviewing and video recording some of Sugar Hill’s most important long-time residents, native sons and daughters� Darrell’s unassuming and gentle nature makes him the ideal leader for this project of the Sugar Hill Historic Preservation Society His first interview was a big one – a native son and local mover and shaker named Wayne Hill� The interview was conducted in the History Museum at Sugar Hill City Hall,
the back-drop was interesting – a display cabinet that includes memorabilia from Sugar Hill’s former volunteer fire department Inside that display cabinet are several items donated by Wayne, including his firefighter helmet, lapel pin, and patch To say that Wayne played an important role in the community’s past is an understatement� In many ways, individuals like Wayne, Maron Buice, Glad Sudderth, and many others made Sugar Hill what it is today� Their legacies are born out in their descendants and, equally important, through their stories Glad Sudderth passed away recently, but many others from our past are still alive and make Darrell’s story recording project a critical race against time�
It takes a unique skill-set to be able to conduct video interviews Darrell admits that he was nervous, but he worked hard in advance of the interview to be prepared with questions and background information on Wayne that would be relevant to a modern listener� Any interview with someone that has the life
experience and accomplishments of Wayne would be intimidating for even the most seasoned interviewer� Darrell said the interview, once it took place, was easy He focused on big-picture questions with Wayne, but let him have the freedom to expand Wayne had a lot to talk about Darrell noted that sometimes during these interviews, once both parties got comfortable, you really got a feel for the person’s personality He noticed that Wayne has a gift of connecting with people and making people feel that connection Darrell learned a lot of relevant information from Wayne – historical information on Sugar Hill and Gwinnett County, as well as glimpses into various leadership styles�
Wayne grew up in Sugar Hill and graduated from North Gwinnett High School� For nearly 2o years, he ran a cabinet company in the city that his father started in 1953 Wayne would later serve as Chairman of the Gwinnett County Commission for 12 years and has a long list of accomplishments that have
greatly impacted the county that he has called home for many years His life is fascinating and full of great stories that are all book-worthy� Wayne remembers the poverty that was prevalent in Sugar Hill, when Lake Lanier was created in the 1950s, rabbit hunting along Georgia Highway 20, and many other things that seem like fiction but happened and are true glimpses into Sugar Hill’s past These experiences imprinted onto the Sugar Hill and Gwinnett County we all call home

A New Era of Student Interests

For several years, North Gwinnett High School (NGHS) has been home to athletic, academic and artistic students alike Students spend four years learning not only what is required to get them into a great college, but rather, what they want to be as an adult � Clubs and activities at North Gwinnett High School have always played a key part in developing new interests in a student and enhancing individual skills In recent years, they have grown and developed into a large cluster of diversity� An interview of selected students who have started new clubs within the last year showed that they gained experience in areas of leadership, team building, and decision making For students who are part of one or more of these clubs and activities, they overcome the fear of change and become open to trying new things � The clubs range from education-related DECA (Distributive Education Club of America), to foreign language clubs for Spanish, French, German, and Latin Clubs such as AASA (Asian American Student Association), ISA (International Student Association), and ELF (English Language Friends), promote unity among students from different ethnicities and backgrounds, encouraging students to learn more about other cultures and traditions � Meanwhile, GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) and Girl Up focus on the concept of empowerment for a specific group of students There are even the unique athletic clubs such as the NGHS Air Rifle Team, the Equestrian Team, and the Fencing Team, all of which compete at various different competitions to represent the school For the arts, NGHS Players continues to put on productions like “Cinderella,” “The Crucible,” and “Alice in Wonderland,” to encourage students to explore their interests in theatre production � These are only a few of the several clubs available to students at North Gwinnett High School � However, this wide variety was not always present Over the last 20-25 years, students
have been responsible for taking on leadership roles and forming the many clubs that are present to this day Mrs. Alicia Couch Payne , alumni of North Gwinnett High School and current editor of The North Gwinnett Voice , states that there were not nearly as many options available for clubs and activities during her time as a student � Those that were available, were Key Club, Jr� Civitan, and National Honors Society (NHS) � Current students at the high school believe this was due to the concept of clubs being fairly new during that time and that they were just a group of ideas in the making They feel that only the academic clubs, like those present during Mrs Payne’s high school years, were started by the school as an initiative to get students to become more involved and create their own clubs � North Gwinnett High School is ranked as the number two high school in Gwinnett County and student life is one of the primary reasons for it � With all of the clubs and activities run by the students of NGHS, the diversity and unification within the school will surely keep it one of the best schools for many years to come

It’s the time of the year that so many have waited on � It’s FOOTBALL season! Georgia is a state that takes its high school football seriously� The state has ranked in the top four states for four- and five-star recruits in the nation The class of 2020 in Georgia ranks third in the country, beating states much larger like California It is something of a religion in the state, especially in Gwinnett County which is a hotbed for talent within Georgia According to ESPN, Gwinnett County ranks fourth for the top recruits in the entire nation � We know good football around here and we wait with anticipation for this time of year�
Gwinnett’s first-ever state championship title came in 1978 when Buford High School defeated Charlton County Gwinnett would not see another state title until 1996 when Brookwood brought home the title In the years since Brookwood’s 1996 win, Gwinnett has 21 state championship titles as listed below
According to MaxPreps Sports’ August 18, 2019 state rankings, Gwinnett County has four high schools in the top twenty rankings with Parkview as the highest in the 4th spot followed by North Gwinnett at 7th, Archer at 10th, and Grayson at 11th � Dacula ranks 30th, Buford comes in at number 31, Mill Creek at 43rd, and Lanier rounds out the schools in this area at number 56

This past week marked the first official week of high school football Buford was due to play last year’s state AAAAAAA champions Milton at Coolray Field as part of the Corky Kell Classic but the game was rained out � The game has been rescheduled for September 6 at Milton High School Also playing in the Corky Kell Classic was North Gwinnett at Mercedes-Benz Stadium � Last Friday night, Lanier took on a
much different Peachtree Ridge than the one that they beat 47-0 a year ago� Playing at Peachtree Ridge, Lanier just managed to beat out the Lions 21-14 � Taj Barnes opened the scoring for Lanier with a 77-yard return in the first half � With 2:14 left to go in the third quarter, Cole Thornton would score a touchdown on a 44-yard pass from Lanier QB Andrew Blackford to tie both teams at 14 each � Lanier would win on a special teams touchdown when Peachtree Ridge’s punter was pressured to kick straight into the air Lanier’s Michael Radman caught the ball in the end zone for a touchdown for Lanier in the fourth quarter North took to the road this past Saturday to play in the Corky Kell Classic
at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium North Gwinnett lost a tough one to Colquitt County who they defeated in the state championship title game in 2017 � Colquitt won 17-6 over North North only managed to put together two field goals in this game although North’s defense was very strong holding Colquitt to just 160 total yards offensively North shows a lot of promise with players like four-star wide receiver Josh Downs on the roster Buford’s season will officially start on Friday night at home against Jonesboro High School Lanier will have its home opener against Central Gwinnett and North Gwinnett will host Armwood High School from Seffner, Florida

LAWRENCEVILLE — On Saturday, August 17, an enthusiastic crowd representing many members from the Buford community found themselves cheering on the Gwinnett Stripers at Buford Night to commemorate the start of a new school year Engaging with the community is a major part of the Buford City Schools initiative; even so, it was immensely encouraging to discover that over 600 tickets were sold in the Buford City Schools section alone�
According to Director of Communications Kerri Leland, Buford Night at the Stripers game was intended to not only inspire comradery among community members but also to introduce Dr Robert Downs, Superintendent of Buford City Schools Dr Downs was honored with the role of throwing out the first pitch at the game When asked about his experience, Dr Downs described the event in glowing terms� “There were Wolves of all ages filling the stands for Buford Night at the Stripers,” said Dr� Downs�
“It was a fantastic evening for our Buford families to enjoy time together as a kick-off to the school year I enjoyed the opportunity to meet families and spend time with so many members of our community�”
Additionally, the Buford Middle School Band performed admirably during the seventh-inning stretch, representing their community tremendously well The Stripers game also served a third purpose as a fundraiser for the band, with a percentage of the Buford section ticket sales donated as proceeds Dr Downs also commented on their performance� “The Buford Middle School band did an excellent rendition of ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame’� Our new middle school band director, Kathy Mason, did an outstanding job getting our students prepared to play with only eight school days to practice We are looking forward to seeing that program continue to grow under her guidance ” All in all, the evening was a great example of how BCSS partners with the community to benefit our students and families�

Buford fastpitch softball program reaches 500 wins
BUFORD — Buford’s fastpitch softball program records it’s 500th career win Tuesday night with their win over Brookwood Following their third-place finish at the GHSA state tournament for slowpitch softball in 2001, Buford made the decision to cease their slowpitch program� So in 2002, Buford’s fastpitch softball program was born with Brandon Manders serving as the program’s first head coach Buford started off ambitious with a full region schedule in the fall of 2002 During that first season they had an overall record of 9-11 and a Region 8AA record of 4-5 � 2003 saw a vast improvement over their inaugural season going 27-13 � In only their second year, they made a trip to the GHSA Elite Eight and finish fourth in Class AA The team for 2005 made history with their first ever Region title They also advanced to the GHSA Elite Eight and finished third overall in Class AA
After the 2005 season, Manders stepped down as the head coach to assume other duties within the school system� He left the program with an overall record of 9148 Jacob Travis who was Mander’s assistant coach was selected to take over as the program’s head coach Travis only coached one season before he left Buford for a job at Adairsville High School During the 2006 season, the team went 26-11, made it to the Elite Eight tournament, and finished third overall in the state� 2007 marked the start of a new era for the Buford fastpitch softball program when Tony Wolfe was selected to take on the head coaching position Wolfe was the baseball coach and an assistant football coach at the time he took on the softball head coaching position � He got to be the head coach as his daughter Whitney was entering the fastpitch program as a freshman � Whitney continues to be actively involved in the program serving as the Director of Softball Operations
The 2007 team broke a record that still
stands to this day� They had an impressive 33 wins that season and was able to qualify to go to the Elite Eight tournament �
The team was hungry and was able to bring home the program’s first ever state championship title which also happened to be Buford High School’s first ever state championship title for any female sport at the school� 2007 kicked off a run of ten consecutive state title wins which is a record that still stands within the GHSA fastpitch program to this day�
“Since the fastpitch program’s inception back in 2002, the Wolves have won 10 Region championships, finished in the “Final Four” at the state tournament 5 times, and have won 10 state championships (20072016),” says Brad Brown, the program’s statistician� He goes on to add, “The state championships have been won at every classification that Buford High School has competed in, from Class AA up to their present classification of Class AAAAA ”
