Proceeds from this magazine fund the North Gwinnett Voice internship program through which eligible Buford High School juniors and seniors have an opportunity to explore a potential career in journalism and media. A note from Dr. Downs Dear Members of the Senior Class of 2021: This month 353 green caps and gowns will walk out of the Buford Arena and cross the threshold into the world as Buford High School graduates. As you clasp your diploma, be proud of all the dedication and hard work it has taken to achieve this great accomplishment. Your class has pivoted during the last two school years operating with restrictions and prescribed ways to gather during a global pandemic. I am so very proud of the way you all have responded. You met restraint with innovation, mask mandates with maturity. I cannot count the creative ways you all have managed to stay connected and continue participating in extracurricular activities, part-time jobs, and family obligations while giving your studies your very best effort. For all the challenges you have faced, not one of them kept you from achieving your goals. Your graduating class exemplified our motto of Triple “A” Excellence! There are too many accomplishments to name individually, but each of you has represented our school well. As you look back on your path to this success, think of all the teachers, classmates, friends, family, and most of all, your parents, who have helped you reach this point. Make sure you have shown your gratitude for them. No one achieves success alone, and I am confident that they are as proud of you as I am. A note from Principal Hagelthorn Dear Class of 2021, Congratulations! It is my honor to have served as your principal during this unique school year. I know that there have been highs and lows throughout these last two years for all of you. As juniors, you missed out on the end of your junior year events and special activities. And as seniors, school events had to be innovative, and lots of grace and flexibility had to be given to even pull them off. I can only hope that through this last year you have made memories that you will never forget and that in the midst of the pandemic you still felt important and honored. The faculty and I are all very proud of your ability to accomplish great things even while dealing with the modifications brought on by our “new normal.” Famous film director Nora Ephron said, “Your education is a dress rehearsal for a life that is yours to lead.” Continue striving and continue reaping the benefits of your hard work throughout the rest of your life, and always remember that Buford High School is here to support you. Each year, the Georgia Department of Education recognizes outstanding English language learners who have excelled as high school students. To qualify, the student must have earned a GPA of at least 3.5, participated in extracurricular activities and demonstrated exemplary character. This year, the Georgia Department of Education has recognized one member of the BHS Class of 2021: Mohammed Al-Eethawi.
The Math Award is presented to Vachan Patel. The Science Award is presented to Alex Catalan. The Social Studies Award is presented to Lizbeth Gomez. STAR STUDENTS The STAR student is the member of the Senior Class who has earned the highest SAT score. This year, there was a tie, so Buford High School is proud to recognize three STAR Students: Monroe Harless, James Morgan and Vachan Patel. VALEDICTORIAN AND SALUTATORIAN The valedictorian for the Class of 2021 is Alicia Ross. Alicia is the daughter of Cheryl and Michael Ross and has attended Buford City Schools since kindergarten. During high school, she has been a member of the softball team, National Honor Society, BETA Club, yearbook, the IDEALS Leadership Program and the Writing Center. She plays travel softball and helps coach an 8-10 year old girls’ softball team. Alicia plans to attend Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, where she will continue playing softball while majoring in biology or neuroscience with hope of a career in the medical field. The salutatorian for the Class of 2021 is Vachan Patel. Vachan is the son of Dhvani Patel and Kashyap Patel. Vachan has attended Buford City Schools since third Grade. He is a Scholar Athlete who has participated in varsity baseball, student council, BETA Club, NHS and Spanish Club. He also serves as a research assistant at the University of North Georgia and a youth mentor at the BAPS temple. Vachan plans to attend Georgia Tech and study public policy or biochemistry with the goal of becoming a physician.

Valedictorian speech — by Alicia Ross —
F
irst, I would like to say thank you to the incredible support found within this arena tonight. Without each of our family members, teachers, coaches, friends, and their endless contributions and encouragement, none of us would be walking across this stage. I am sincerely grateful to have spent the last 18 years in such a strong and selfless community. Throughout our time in high school, we have been asked on numerous occasions to check boxes and bubble in circles. From standardized tests to college applications and beyond, we are continuously required to define ourselves by our race, gender, ethnicity, and other qualities beyond our personal control. Walls are built around us, dividing us based on countless traits, and forcing us to focus on what makes each individual different from the next. While it is essential to acknowledge, respect, and educate ourselves on each of these external distinctions, I have found it is even more important that we seek to define ourselves by our choices and our actions — characteristics that will not be listed on answer sheets and demographic questionnaires. Over my time at Buford High School, I have been a member of several organizations, but the most valuable one I have been fortunate enough to join was the IDEALS Leadership Program, led by Jack Williams. Throughout this program, student-athletes from the Atlanta area develop their professional and team skills, but some of the greatest takeaways I had came from interactions with other students. When I first walked into the IDEALS conference room, I felt intimidated and overwhelmed. I was surrounded by 43 students I had

never met before, and was expected to engage in team activities and to be vulnerable and honest with groups of complete strangers. Although everyone experienced great hesitation at first, silence was never an option during these classes, so we all came to know each other rather quickly. On paper, each member of IDEALS was unique: we played different sports, went to different schools, and had different interests and personalities. Nonetheless, we all carried the same objective in mind — to better ourselves. This desire allowed us to collaborate and pressured us to dive beneath our surface-level dissimilarities to truly understand each other. I feel tremendously lucky to have had such an eye-opening experience
as that program was and to have met such an extraordinary group of wonderful people. With that being said, I have realized that we are often much more alike than we are different when we explore past our superficial features. If we follow our future pursuits with open minds and generous hearts, we have the opportunity to meet people that we may have never met otherwise, and we can learn from and grow with each other along the way. As we begin the next chapter of our lives, I hope we can recognize that one commonality within our generation is our capacity to create immeasurable change in the world. I can say with conviction that each and every one of the 353 graduates in this room is motivated,
intelligent, passionate, and dedicated. Otherwise, we would not be sitting here today. These past few months alone have challenged us in unimaginable ways, and our perseverance alongside the strength we have demonstrated through these hardships is truly a testament to the potential that lies within every single one of us. As author John Green says in his novel Paper Towns, “It is so hard to leave — until you leave. And then, it is the easiest thing in the world.” Many, if not all, of us are feeling wary of what is ahead of us, and the truth is, no one knows what we may encounter in the coming years, months, or even days. Despite this, the vast number of paths we can travel upon in this moment is limitless. Step forward with not fear, but excitement, and take advantage of every minute of life you are given. No matter what route you take after today, you will have the opportunity to make a positive and meaningful impact on others, if you choose to take it. After we depart from this building, and leave the last four years with it, we will each embark on our own journeys and venture into the unknown. We will certainly face obstacles, but we will always strive to empower and uplift one another, so that we may work together to create a world that is just as beautiful as the people in it. Without a doubt, success and happiness are ahead of us. In the end, when our history books are written, let the authors not only depict the remarkable and significant diversity our generation held, but, more importantly, how we united to find peace, show love, and care for humankind and the world, together. Thank you, and congratulations to the Class of 2021.

Salutatorian speech — by Vachan Patel —
I
asked my parents if they remember any of their commencement speakers: high school, college, or graduate school? They don’t remember a single one. I looked up many commencement speeches online and noted how so many said ironically how what they said would be forgotten by the audience. Words alone cannot capture this moment. No other graduating class has had a senior year like yours — ever. It has been a year of struggle, uncertainty, and tragedy. At a time when we should be allowed to embrace life with all its wonder and noise, we have had to contend with fear and isolation. The world stopped making sense for a while. And yet here we are on the other side. Each of us triumphant in our own way. And if you don’t remember my words, please remember this moment. We did it, baby! I was asked to inspire you with this speech and quite frankly I kind of found that funny. I am at the same point in life as all of you guys are, and like many of you, there is still so much more I don’t know about the world and myself. For crying out loud my mom still yells at me to clean my room or throw my laundry. These past four years of high school were inarguably the best years of my life. It didn’t hit me until baseball was over, as I was hanging my jersey up for the final time. Baseball was everything to me, and when I was playing it, that’s when I was the happiest. But in the moment though, I failed to appreciate it. I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you’ve actually left them. These are the good old days

— sometimes things and people we find insignificant or even annoying will shape us, our choices, and our lives for years to come. I look back on these small glimpses of my history at Buford, and I cherish every moment of it, even if at the time I hated it. It made me who I am today. Each of my relationships, friends and teachers, made me who I am today. It is easy to look forward when times are easy and when obstacles look like mere speed bumps. That is often how graduates feel, but we know differently. Our experiences will forever be marked by struggles of historical proportions. We have had to persevere. By definition, perseverance earns its value
has said, do your best and leave the rest. Not giving your all for your dreams and aspirations is not acceptable, that’s not what these past four years have taught us. The time, effort, and sacrifice you made will be worth it and you will bear the fruits of your labor in the future. I came to this understanding because of those I was blessed to know over the last several years. First and foremost, Thank you to my Guru for giving me purpose and motivation and the motto I live by — in the joy of others lies our own. Thank you mom, dad, and sister for never giving up on me and showering me with unconditional love even when the light at the end of the tunnel seemed to dim. Thank you to my boys, my brothers. Thank y’all for hours of basketball, the hours of goofing and fooling around, and the lifetime of memories. Thank you to my many friends, peers, and you all sitting before me. You have pushed me to be better, whether that was directly or indirectly, and I am forever grateful. We’ve all had our different paths and journeys, but they have all intersected at this specific moment in time ... our graduation from high school, and I am honored to have shared this moment with you all. Cheers to us Class of 2021. We’ve officially done it. We are finishing this chapter of our lives, and starting a new one. It has been one crazy, unexpected, and unforgettable ride. Career, Technical and Agricultural Education Pathways Department Students at Buford High School may decide to pursue one of seven pathways in the Career, Technical and Agricultural Education department. CTAE combines core academic knowledge with technical and occupational skills to better prepare students for postsecondary education and the workforce. Buford offers the following pathways: Graphic Communication, Audio Video Technology and Film Entrepreneurship, Teaching as a Profession, Therapeutic Services: Sports Medicine and Patient Care, Sports and Entertainment Marketing, Nutrition and Food Science and Carpentry. There are student organizations that fall under the CTAE umbrella. The CTAE-based student organizations at Buford High School are DECA, FBLA, FCCLA and HOSA.

‘Bright Star’ shines to take One-Act win By Torin Smith
Literary Team takes win at state By Torin Smith
Each year, The Georgia High School Association holds a Literary Competition for high school students to showcase their talents in areas such as writing, speech, singing and dramatic interpretation. Students from schools in each GHSA region compete and represent their schools in hopes of winning the region championship and having a chance to compete at the state competition. The competition is structured much like a track meet, with individual top four finishes earning points for the team, and the team with the most points at the end of the day wins the state championship. Earlier this year, the Buford High School Literary Team won the region competition and secured another trip to the state championship. In 2015, Buford set a record for the most consecutive state championships with seven. This year, the team extended that record-holding streak to 12 consecutive state wins with a dominant showing over the other 6A schools. The Buford team breezed past the competition at this year’s event on April 24, 2021, easily securing another win and another trophy for the school. This year’s team featured performances from some Buford High School’s most prolific writers, speakers, actors and singers: Monroe Harless (senior), Lauryn
Brown (senior), Torin Smith (senior), Asher Thornton (senior), Ross Wilson (senior), Sydney Holton, Mara Eva Cline, Dylan Appling, Rachel Bryson, Alyssa Lovern, Carter Hamby (senior), Mason Fenno (senior), Geo Nam and Mauricio Garduno Rea. The team finished with 47 points, while the second place team, Lee County, finished with only 22. The Buford High School Theatre Program competed in the GHSA State One-Act competition on Feb. 20, 2021. We would like to congratulate the Wolf Pack Players on winning the 6A state championship with their performance of the show “Bright Star.” The championship marks Buford’s third straight state title and fourth championship in five years, as the school won in 2016, 2018, 2019 and now in 2020-21. This year was Buford’s first time competing in the 6A division, and the Wolf Pack Players dominated in their debut. The one-act play competition is an opportunity for programs to display their talents as they adapt a show to fit specific time and performance constraints. This means whole sections of shows have to be condensed and changes have to be precisely perfected to shorten the show. When programs go to compete, they get one shot to perform in front of three judges who then score the show, and the program with the best score wins the title. There are also individual awards that are given for best actor and best actress, as well as best supporting actor and actress, best ensemble and all star cast. The 6A state one-act championships were held at Veterans High School. The championships were moved from the fall to the spring due to the pandemic and to allow for safety protocols. Buford competed against seven other schools in its division, edging out Cambridge High School and Houston County for the title. In addition to winning the state championship, Buford’s own Asher Thornton was honored with the best actor award and Mara Eva Cline received the all star cast award for the 6A division for their outstanding performances. The complications of the pandemic were huge obstacles for the Wolf Pack Players this season. Masks, contact tracing and social distancing all added to the stresses of preparing for the competition. Despite these setbacks, the cast and crew persevered through the obstacles, and their hard work paid off for them and all of BHS, as the Wolves have added yet another championship to the trophy locker this year. The past year has been tough for students in the performing arts, but the importance of moments like these are not lost to the pandemic. Congratulations to the BHS theatre program as all of the students’ hard work and dedication to excellence and performance triumphed over the obstacles of the pandemic.

Isaac Arroyo Isaac Arroyo is the son of Angela and Damian Arroyo. Isaac and his two brothers, Eduardo and Gabriel Arroyo, were raised in Buford. He has attended Buford City Schools since kindergarten and is proud to be a Buford “lifetimer.” Seven years ago, Isaac found his niche within Buford City Schools. He discovered his love for music through the band department. Isaac has been a part of the marching band for the past five years, the wind ensemble for three years, indoor drumline for two years, jazz band for two years and concert band for a year. Through his hard work and leadership, Isaac has earned accolades for his participation in the BHS Band of Wolves. He was trumpet section

leader in 2019 and brass captain in 2020. Isaac received the MVP Award in 2017, Director’s Choice Instrumentalist Award in 2020 and was named Most Outstanding Marching Band Member in 2020. “The reason why I love band so much, especially in Buford, is how much it feels like a family,” Isaac said. “Just having those connections with each other helps the group as a whole feel and play more connected to create more beautiful sounding music.” While the band took up a good portion of Isaac’s time at BHS, he found the time to also participate in the Spanish and Hope clubs. During his four years at Buford High
School, Isaac maintained a 3.45 GPA. Punctuality and reliability are the two things Isaac said he learned during his four years at BHS. He feels those two things are vital to his future success. He urges those younger than him to master them and they will take them far in life. No doubt Isaac will take all of the lessons learned at Buford with him into the future. A future that he hopes involves college. He would like to major in computer science and minor in music composition. With his many accomplishments during his career within the BHS band department, it is easy to see why Isaac was selected as the senior spotlight for band. Congratulations, Isaac!
A note from Mr. Mason and Mrs. Wildes Class of 2021, What an adventure we’ve had together over the last year! You all have experienced the strangest period of time that we can imagine, and you have handled it with class, dignity, and honor. We never imagined that what we would dream of would be the ‘same old, same old,’ but at times this year, humdrum would have been a blessing. What impresses us about each of you is how well you received the small blessings we have had and your ability to roll with changes that at times felt like daily occurrences. We got to be a part of a state championship football season, performing at ten games, including a very memorable game at Georgia State. We got to be together; practicing, spending time together, and sharing our performances with thousands. In any other year, all
of this would have felt average, but we feel lucky to have had the opportunity to do all of it with each of you. We also know that changing band directors before your senior year is not what any of you hoped for. At the very first meeting we all had together, we were told that the Band of Wolves is a family, and we can truly feel that you welcomed us and made us a part of your family. So many of you actively reached out to us and made great efforts to make us feel accepted, and it did not go unnoticed. That means more than either of us can ever express, and we hope that we’ve made you proud of the family that we have become this year. It would be easy to overlook your musical accomplishments this year amongst the sea of change, but what you achieved is remarkable. We were able to prepare four concerts, two
of them live, and all of them amazing. Your growth this year has impressed us and shows what your drive, passion, and hard work can bring. We could not be prouder of our eleven District Honor Band and seven All-State Band members but this year’s spring concert was an event that will be remembered by many for a very long time. That night was transformative for our program and we cannot thank you enough for sharing your gifts and talents with us and with this community. As you move on to the next stage of your lives, know that we are always here for you. A note from Mr. Greer What a wild year! We have been truly blessed in Buford City Schools to have a year that feels “normal.” Students have been able to come to school, perform together and even perform for an in-person audience for all spring productions. The challenges and limitations faced this year only further showed the students’ resilience in the face of adversity. Specifically, this senior class has been so positive through the craziest of times. Each day, they came in ready to work and prepare for the next performance. Not only did they miss many events as juniors in 2020, but their entire senior year was completely changed because of circumstances outside of their control. Seniors, you really took the challenge of this school year and showed truly admirable character through it all. I am so proud of you! Go Wolves!

Jacob Smith If there is anything Jacob Smith is known for, it is his dedication to the Buford High School choral program. After joining the program his freshman year, “because [he] was told it was a very fun and involved pathway,” Jacob would spend the next four years “learning about music and the detail that goes into performing a song well.” According to Jacob, “Being in chorus really helped develop my confidence around larger groups and was just a fun experience.” Jacob is the son of Dion and Sheri Smith and the brother of Cameron, a student at the University of Kentucky. Aside from his participation in the chorus program, Jacob was also a member of the two-time state championship-winning BHS football team as well as the BHS wrestling team, where he placed sixth in the individual state tournament his sophomore year. He is also an honor graduate. Jacob’s football career began in the third grade. “I have known that it was my niche ever
since,” he said. “I love the game, the lessons learned over the years, the relationships and the memories made each year. It’s just an amazing thing to be a part of.” Next year, Jacob will attend Army West Point to play football. His favorite teacher at BHS was Dr. Chris Fowler, his choral director. “He was the one who guided me down this path to begin with,” Jacob said. “He made me believe I could be a member of chamber chorus and taught me to embrace being outside of my comfort zone.” When asked what his favorite BHS memory is, Jacob described the feeling of winning two football state championships. “The atmospheres of those games and the battles we fought will stay with me forever,” he said. Outside of athletics, Jacob also fondly remembers the Variety Show performances. “That had to be some of the most fun I had in my four years,” he said.

A note from Mrs. Smith Dear Buford Dance Class of 2021, What a year! This year had its share of ups and downs, but you have persevered and overcame each obstacle you’ve faced! I am so proud of each of you! Whether you’ve been in dance all four years, or just one, you will always be part of our Buford dance family. It has been a joy and honor teaching you and watching you grow into the amazing young men and women you are today. The Class of 2021 has produced some of the hardest working and talented students that we have seen on our stage at Buford High School. From your freshman year dancing in "I Wanna Rock" to your senior year leading the stage in "In It to Win It." You’ve shown immense talent and confidence. I know no matter what you pursue in life, whether it be a career on stage, in an office, hospital, or classroom, I know you will approach life with the same confidence. Remember the only impossible journey is the one you never begin. I wish you all the best as you enter into this new chapter in life. I am proud of this class and hope to see many of your smiling faces in the theatre at future dance performances. Lillian Trippe Lillian Trippe, the daughter of Kelly and Bill Trippe, began attending Buford in the ninth grade, however, she was raised in Flowery Branch her entire life. Her older brother Jake, 24, is her only sibling. Throughout her time at Buford, Lillian has taken two AP classes and managed to uphold an unweighted 3.7 GPA. Her favorite subject is history, because she enjoys getting to understand how our world came to be what it is today, and her favorite teacher is Ms. Smith, because she has helped her grow as both a dancer and a person. Lillian has spent her entire life as a dancer. She has always danced at Heather Wayne's Performing Arts, and for the past 10 years, she has been a member of the Heather Wayne Dance Company, where she has competed in regional and national competitions. Lillian danced through her four years of high school. She spent three years on the dance team, three years in musical theatre and she spent her senior year as a varsity sideline football cheerleader. When asked what dance has taught her, Lillian said, “It has taught me that if you really want something, you have to work hard and set your mind to it until you get it. “I’ve learned that at the end of the day it’s not how good you are or the trophies or wins that matter, it’s the fact that you still love it and continue to do it.” In her free time, Lillian enjoys sleeping, going shopping, hanging out with friends and watching dance videos.
After high school, Lillian plans to attend Oklahoma City University, where she will be able to earn an undergraduate degree in dance. “What’s unique about Oklahoma City University is that they have so many connections to the professional dance world and they bring in a lot of industry professionals to teach us and help us prepare for the industry,” she said. Congratulations, Lillian! We can’t wait to see what the future holds for you!

Everything else is an inconvenience.” — Robert Fulghum, “Everything I Need to Know, I Learned in Kindergarten” Class of 2021: This was a year in which you learned to turn a problem into an inconvenience! Who would have dreamed a year ago that you would be on stage with an audience? That you would have an opportunity to win two State Championships in One Act and Literary? That you would be able to share the art form that you love so much? Knowing most of you well before the pandemic, I am not one bit surprised. You have always looked for solutions and opportunities, choosing to focus on what can be done. (That’s the theatre part of you: nothing is impossible if you work hard enough.) And work you have! What a pleasure it has been to watch you grow as performers and adults. Watching you step up to lead your peers, offering encouragement and support, in even the darkest of times, was wonderful to see. Seeing you attack difficult work until you mastered it, spoke louder than anything you could have vocalized. I know you will continue to persevere when things don’t always go your way. Kennedi Nichols
Kennedi Nichols is a musical theatre performer at BHS. She’s been at Buford since freshman year and said her favorite memory from this year was winning “Bright Star” at the state one-act competition with her cast. “It was a long year of hard work and it took lots of focus and I love to produce a great product,” Kennedi said. “I made so many amazing friendships and hope to carry them with me throughout my whole life.” Kennedi is also involved in dance, quiz bowl and improv. She would like to give the freshman class coming into BHS next fall this piece of advice. “I would say remember who you are and stay true to who you are,” she said. “Do not let any part of high school change who you are at your core; you will grow but remember that you are amazing and showstopping. Don’t let anyone ever convince you otherwise.”
Kennedi is most proud of winning the state championship in one-act play three years in a row. “Only I and one other girl have had the privilege of being in the winning cast three years in a row,” she said. “My proudest accomplishment though was winning the first year. It was my first time in the competition show and my first time with a lead role. It was a whirlwind of emotions and it just made me so happy to be a part of such a great theatre program and family.“ Kennedi would like to tell her teachers, “Thank you so much for all the knowledge you have bestowed upon me. I appreciate every teacher that has made an effort to unearth my potential. And for every teacher that has ever stayed late or answered one of my emails in a desperate panic, I want to thank you.” Kennedi plans to go to college at the University of Georgia and major in theatre and nursing.

The National Art Honor Society is an organization that seeks to inspire and recognize students who have shown talent and interest in art. Members must submit three pieces of artwork, complete a minimum of three community service hours and maintain an academic weighted GPA of 90 or higher. Senior NAHS members who have been members of NAHS for at least two years and are in good standing received cords for graduation. Those members are Ryanne Alvarez, Faith Arends, Lauryn Brown, Adriana Cascio, Alexander Catalan, Thao-Nhi Dinh, CJ Fish, Miriam Lowery and Gerardo Parra. Lauryn Brown received the NAHS scholarship of $500. Lauryn has taken art classes all four years of high school and has been an active member of NAHS for all four years as well. This year, the four-year senior art students had a chance to have their work displayed in the first-ever Senior Art Gallery. The artwork took three months to complete and was done on 24” x 36” stretched canvases. The artwork will permanently grace the hallways of Buford High School. The senior students who have their work on display are Faith Arends, Lauryn Brown, CJ Fish, Miriam Lowery, Kailey Mendoza-Tellez, Gabby Osiek and Lily Perry.

Miriam Lowery
iriam Lowery was born in Oxford, Mississippi, but her family moved to Atoka, Tennessee, when she was 2. She grew up in Tennessee and moved to Georgia the summer before her seventh grade year, when she started at Buford. She says the transition was difficult, but Buford’s close-knit community welcomed her and eased the struggles. Miriam has a younger sister, Celia, who is a seventh grader at Buford Middle School and a 2-monthold brother, Pierce. Miriam ran cross country and played soccer all four years of high school. She also was a member of the Buford chamber chorus since her junior year. She was also in the National Honor Society, Beta Club and the National Art Honor Society. One of Miriam’s art pieces was recognized at the 2020 All State Art Symposium at Columbus State University. She also received the visual arts award, as well as first place at the Buford City Schools Art Show. Outside of school, Miriam is an active member of the youth group at Restoration Presbyterian Church.
Miriam’s favorite subject in school has always been math. She loves problem solving because she has a great logical mindset and ability to come up with creative solutions. Miriam said her favorite class she took at Buford High School was AP chemistry because it was challenging and interesting and because Ms. Cole was an amazing teacher. At BHS, Miriam’s favorite teachers were Ms. Cole and Ms. McAdam because they are both very committed to their students and they always pushed her to be the best student she could be. In her free time, Miriam enjoys creating art, reading, playing violin and spending time with her family and friends. She also works at WolfPack, the after-school program at Buford Academy, where she has worked since the beginning of her junior year. Next year, Miriam will be attending the Georgia Institute of Technology for a B.A. degree in architectural design and master’s degree in architecture. Her current plan for life after college is to go into the residential architecture field. Miriam is excited for the future, and she is proud to be a Buford Wolf!

A note from Coach Wolfe Congratulations and thank you to the Buford High School Senior Class of 2021. No class in the history of our great school has faced so many challenges, and yet you have overcome every obstacle and achieved greatly and represented our school and community honorably. I am so thankful for the leadership, commitment and discipline the senior class has displayed this year. In an unprecedented school and athletic year, this senior class has overcome the pandemic, close contact tracing, COVID-19 protocols, and digital learning, to achieve excellence throughout the school year. Your career has seen many changes and challenges, but you have continued the great traditions of excellence, poise, and class in every arena. Your career has included two school buildings, many changes in leadership, a complete school shutdown, and attending school during a pandemic. I take great comfort in knowing how prepared you are to begin the next chapter of
your life. You have put in the work, you have displayed both academic growth and personal maturity, and have developed a resilience and toughness that will serve you well in your future. This senior class has been patient, flexible, determined and committed. The 2020-2021 athletic year has been remarkable in many ways and our senior class has led the way. The 2021 class has continued the standard of excellence again this year by giving greatly of themselves to their teams, their teammates, our school, and community. Gabe Ervin A note from Coach Appling To The Class of 2021: In a year like nothing we've ever experienced, one constant remained: you knew how to play Buford Football. Buford Football has been successful for many reasons over the years, but some of our core beliefs are: 1) Your Seniors must play the best ball of their careers — YOU LEFT IT ALL ON THE FIELD. 2) Your Seniors must be able to lead the underclassmen, and they must be willing to follow — YOU LED AND THEY FOLLOWED. 3) The foundational intangibles of Buford Football of poise, class, effort, toughness, belief, grabbing on when it gets difficult, and the true meaning of FAMILY must be protected within our team by the leaders of our team — YOU STAYED "ABOVE THE B." I am proud of you. Your coaches are proud of you. This community is proud of you. The experiences we shared in your march to a second consecutive State Championship (our first in 6A) is something that can never be taken away from any of us. Buford football powers to state championship By Alicia Couch Payne
O
n Buford’s game banner, the team had the saying “Continuing the legacy,” and they did just that when they managed to pull off the win for the GHSA AAAAAA State Championship title in overtime 34-31 over Lee County on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020. This team added state title No. 13 for Buford football, the second-most titles in the state. For years, people said Buford wouldn’t be able to hang with the big boys in AAAAAA. The team just took that and let it fuel them this season. Despite an opening season loss to North Cobb, Buford knocked off opponent after opponent in its new classification, making it through to the final
game against another powerhouse Lee County. The two teams were evenly matched in almost every way, and they continued to trade off “punches” the entire game. When one would score the other would come back to tie it up. The win gave Buford its first state title in Class AAAAAA adding to titles in six different classifications spanning from A to now AAAAAAA. Eleven of Buford’s 13 state titles have come since 2001. That is a lot of legacy and tradition to honor. This year’s group of players and staff never gave up, adding to Buford’s fabled legacy. No doubt they made those that came before them extremely proud.

We started with over 20 freshmen in your class four years ago and you were the only six who made it all the way through. The Class of 2021 has been very successful. In your four years in high school, our wrestling team has finished in the top 2 in the state all four years, including winning the state championship your freshman and senior seasons. Your hard work and leadership has set a good example for the younger classes to follow and hopefully our success will continue. We wish you the best of luck in the future and hope that the life lessons that you learned through your experience wrestling these last four years benefits you throughout your lifetime. Buford wrestling wins at state Team brings home two titles

In Buford’s first year in Class AAAAAA, the varsity wrestling team brought home not one but two state titles this year. The Wolves won the GHSA Team Duals Wrestling State Championship and the GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Championship titles for Class AAAAAA in their 2021 season. To get to the finals in the Team Duals Championship on Jan. 30, 2021, at Lassiter High School, Buford had to knock off Richmond Hill and Alexander. In the finals, the Wolves were able to defeat Creekview 46-17 to claim their first Team Duals Championship title in their new classification. The BHS wrestling team picked up its second championship title on Feb. 12, 2021, at the Macon Centreplex. Buford, which amassed 183 points, took home first place, while Lassiter came in second with 171 points. Richmond Hill rounded out the top three with 138.5 points. Two seniors placed in the top five at the traditional meet. Nick Cambria finished second in the 132-pound weight class and Jacob Downing came in fifth place. Buford’s lone individual state champion was freshman Rylan Ibold.

A note from Coach Daniels The 2020 season will definitely go down in history for being one of the most special for Buford volleyball. We started our season with all of the challenges of COVID, and over the summer, we didn’t even know if we would get to play. The girls were in the gym all summer though, conditioning, preparing, and praying that we would get at least a few games in. Somehow though, we made it through a whole season, and I couldn’t be more proud of how the girls did it. The seniors were a phenomenal group of six girls, who each had a different leadership style. This ultimately was the biggest factor in our success this season. They each took on a role and owned it. Another major factor was that this team played for each other and not for individual accolades. They came together on and off the court, respected each other, and had fun together, which was apparent on the court. They stepped up their game when a teammate was struggling, they encouraged each other in a way they knew was needed, and they had one team goal of going the whole way. After getting knocked out in the semi-finals for two years in a row, we were thankful for the opportunity of getting to play in the state championship, and we will never forget that day, with the support of the school and the community, where we played our best volleyball of the year, and marked our place in Buford volleyball history! ynamic is a word that comes to mind when describing this year’s Buford volleyball team. The team had a great season culminating with an overall record of 33-2. The Wolves had a team of girls who believed in each other and played for each other, not to mention a roster full of talent. The team took its talent and drive all the way to capture the GHSA Class AAAAAA State Championship title this year. The Wolves played Pope in the championship match at the Lakepoint Sports Complex in Cartersville on Nov. 7, 2020. Pope had only one loss going into the match, so Buford’s players knew it would be a challenge. The Wolves took the first set 25-16 but lost the second set to the Greyhounds 19-25. Buford rallied and took the next two sets 25-13, 2521 to seal the win. Buford volleyball brought home the school’s first state championship title in their new AAAAAA classification. It was a long road to get to that final game, a lot of hard work, commitment and lessons learned. Head coach Hadli Daniels attributes the success of the season to the ability to call on a number of offensive players to make the kills, as well as strong leadership from seniors. The Wolves were led by a group of six seniors, five of whom played volleyball for Buford in middle school under current BHS assistant volleyball coach Christina Lecoeuvre. “They all were leaders in very different ways, so the combination of them together was very special. Macy and Grace, as I have said, were phenomenal leaders on the court, and led by their play. Chloe Kerr and Mary McSwain were my talkers and encouragers and had a special relationship because they shared a spot on the floor,” Daniels said. “They were two of the most unselfish players I have had and were each other's biggest supporters. Carleigh Hillier and Parker Venable were more of my quiet leaders, but each had a huge impact not only this season but as players that came up through our middle school program and have helped build an amazing legacy for Buford volleyball.” With this season in jeopardy due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Daniels said this win was extra special, especially for her senior players getting to play and win a state championship.

Malik Cunningham
Malik Cunningham was born and raised right here in Buford. He is a lifetimer of Buford City Schools, attending from kindergarten through his senior year. Malik played football through most of his years at Buford. He was a two-time state champion and a three-time region champion for high school football. He was also recognized as first team defense, and he lettered in varsity football all four years of high school. Malik also received the Deano Kilgore Award for excellence in varsity football. In his spare time, Malik likes to spend his time with his family and friends. He enjoys playing video games, but his favorite thing to do in his free time is play basketball. Malik’s favorite class at BHS was team sports because he could unwind from the stresses of his core subjects and laugh with friends while playing basketball. Malik’s favorite subject in high school was math. He has always been good with numbers, and he loves to try to solve problems. Malik’s favorite teacher at BHS was
Ms. Armstead. Malik said she always expects a lot from her students because she wants to make sure everyone is fully prepared for college. During the months that Malik was a digital learner during the school year, her advanced composition class was the most involved. He said the members of the football team who were digital would have to be at school for football practice at a certain time, and they would always have a Google Meet session with Ms. Armstead to discuss a book or content that the class was learning before they went on the field. Malik said Ms. Armstead always reiterated how important self-accountability will be in college, and he grew to appreciate her for her care and dedication this year. After graduating from BHS, Malik will continue his education at Reinhardt University on a football scholarship to major in business. He is excited for the future, and he looks forward to using the valuable skills and lessons learned at BHS in his college years and beyond.

Abbi Perkins
Abbi Perkins is a lifetimer at Buford. Her favorite memory from this school year was being able to attend in-person school all year and getting the opportunity to play sports for her senior year. Perkins is involved with varsity softball and basketball, she also gives softball lessons in the community and volunteers as an assistant softball coach for the Buford Middle School team. To the freshman class of BHS coming next fall, Perkins said, “Soak in all the moments, there will never be another time like this in your life. There will be hard days ahead, but just remember you are loved and cared for throughout the halls, there truly is nothing like Buford. Also, pour into each person you can, I promise it will make a difference in their life.” The accomplishment Perkins is most proud of is winning three basketball state championships and making it to the Final Four in softball each year. She wants to tell her BHS teachers, “Thank you. The amount of time and
effort you have invested in me is second to none. I will always look up to you and the way you love and care for your students; you will always be more to me than just a teacher. You have left a lasting impact on me and will always have a special place in my heart. If it wasn’t for teachers like you I wouldn’t want to wake up every day and go to school! You make me a better student-athlete each and every day. I love each of my teachers very much!” Perkins plans to attend Jacksonville State University and continue her softball career in college. “Buford City Schools went above and beyond and put in countless hours to make sure that we were able to return to school for face-to-face learning and also have extracurricular activities,” Perkins said. “The school year has been everything but normal, but I am so thankful for a school system that found a way to make all the little things possible from Friday night student sections to having a senior prom! I am proud to be a Wolf and will always be a Buford Wolf.”

Macy Upshaw
Meet Macy Upshaw, Shelley and Tod Upshaw's daughter. Macy was born in Gainesville but raised in Buford, where she began her education in pre-kindergarten. Austin, 24, is Macy's older brother who graduated from Buford High School in 2014 and graduated from Kennesaw State University in 2019. Macy has taken three AP classes while maintaining a 3.8 GPA. Her favorite subject is history, she says, “because it is all one big story of why our lives are the way they are now.” Ms. Shoemaker is Macy’s favorite teacher because she "always had such a cheerful attitude and taught us in such a way that it was more enjoyable." Macy plays volleyball as part of her extracurricular activities. She was a member of the Buford volleyball team all four years of high school, one year as a JV player and three years as a varsity player. Macy has also been a member of Atlanta Extreme

Volleyball Club for the past seven years. “Volleyball has taught me what you put into something, is how much you will get out of it,” Macy said. “If you work hard for something, in some way the hard work will pay off.” In her free time, Macy enjoys taking pictures, whether it be capturing a moment, taking pictures of her friends or taking pictures of nature. After graduating from Buford, Macy plans to attend Kennesaw State University where she will study business. “I’ve always wanted to start my own business,” she said, “so for that to happen I have to study the business side of things to be successful.” When asked what advice she has for underclassmen, Macy said, “Do not take anything for granted, and do not wish your days away. “Live in the moment and take it all in. The seniors are right when they tell you high school flies by.”

Grace Adams
Grace Adams is the daughter of Holly and Rusty McGiboney. Despite being born in Philadelphia and raised in Orlando, Grace started at Buford in the fifth grade. Grace has one older brother, Sean, 20, who was a Buford graduate in the class of 2019. Grace has accomplished many things in her four years at Buford. She has taken eight AP classes, has a 3.9 GPA and has participated in a variety of extracurricular activities, including NHS, Beta Club, Spanish Club and the Spanish National Honor Society. Volleyball is Grace's most important extracurricular activity. Grace has been a member of the Buford volleyball team for all four years of high school and was named captain her senior year. Grace enjoys volleyball because she gets to play with her best friends, and it has taught her how to bring people together and establish common ground. Grace’s favorite teacher at
Buford High School is her AP calculus teacher, Coach Justin Johnson. Her reasoning behind that? Grace said, “He makes calculus bearable.” Grace spends her free time socializing with her closest friends and making priceless memories. Grace plans to attend New York University after high school, where she will study global health and Spanish with a focus on epidemiology. She said the COVID-19 outbreak has prompted her to pursue a degree in such a field. When asked what advice she has for underclassmen, Grace simply said, “Focus on friendships, not relationships.” Grace Adams is without a doubt going to revolutionize the face of the health care business. We are extremely proud to call her a Buford Wolf because she has accomplished so much as a young adult. Grace, congratulations and best of luck at NYU!

Jackson Buchanan Jackson Buchanan came to Buford City Schools in the sixth grade. He was born in South Bend, Indiana, and raised in Dacula. In high school, Jackson has been a big part of the success of the Buford golf program. He has an older sister, Kylie, who also graduated from BHS. Kylie plays soccer at Mercer University, and she will be a senior next year. Jackson also has a younger sister, Lindsay, an upcoming seventh grader at Hebron Christian Academy. Jackson is a member of the BHS golf team. He has seen individual success in golf, and he will be attending the University of Illinois to continue his golf career and to major in operations management at the Gies Business School. Aside from golf, Jackson’s extracurricular activities include volunteer work at the North Gwinnett Co-Op and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Jackson’s favorite subject in high school was math because he enjoys the algorithms and mind power it takes to figure out problems. His favorite class he took at BHS was AP calculus with his golf coach, Coach Johnson. Jackson said it was his favorite class because Coach Johnson is a fun and excellent teacher, and he also enjoys being surrounded and supported by intelligent peers and friends. Jackson’s favorite teacher at Buford was Coach Johnson because is a great golf coach as well as calculus teacher. Jackson said Coach Johnson takes pride in everything he does and stays supportive even through the toughest struggles. Jackson is very excited to continue his academic and athletic endeavors at the University of Illinois, and he is forever grateful for his years in Buford City Schools.

Nick Cambria
After spending four years on the Buford High School wrestling team, Nick Cambria is ready for whatever the future holds. Nick is the son of Pamela Steele and Sam Cambria, and the brother of two sisters, 7 and 20. Nick began his wrestling career at the age of 6 after joining a West Forsyth wrestling club. He then went on to become an impressive athlete — Nick is a four-time State Wrestling Place-Winner (second, sixth, fourth and second, respectively), and 1st Team All-Gwinnett County, and he even served as the BHS wrestling team captain. “But where the awards were really won,” he said, “was in the Buford High School wrestling room and Teknique Wrestling.” Throughout his career, Nick has seen the most growth in his mental state; “I have learned various life lessons (from wrestling) and have implemented them frequently throughout my life.” Aside from wrestling, Nick was
also a member of the BHS lacrosse team. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, hanging out with friends and watching sports. He was also an honor graduate and an AP Scholar. His favorite teacher at BHS was Mr. Thomas Varini. “His unique personality and fun class really led to a lot of great memories,” Nick said. “He really made learning Spanish enjoyable.” When asked what his favorite memory of BHS was, Nick recalled simpler times. “My favorite memory was the conversations I would have at the lunch table junior year,” he said. “Sitting next to my friends Mikey Canavan and Josh Voorhees really led to some funny conversations and great memories.” Next year, Nick will be attending Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina, on a wrestling scholarship. “I’m excited to see what the next level is like,” he said.

Caroline Snell
Caroline Snell knows what it means to embody Triple A Excellence and has since she entered the Buford City Schools system 13 years ago. Academically, Caroline excelled, graduating 29th in her class and maintaining an impressive 4.0 GPA throughout her high school career. She was even awarded the title of AP Scholar. She dominated athletically, earning 21 total varsity letters (17 for athletics); her athletic career saw her on the varsity competition cheerleading squad where she was awarded the 2021 Emerald Award and the Scholar Athlete Award. She was also on the varsity football cheerleading squad, the gymnastics team, track and field, cross country, and the swim and dive team. Through her time in the advanced dance program, she channeled the arts, even winning the “Dancing with the Wolves” competition in 2018. Of these commit-
ments, Caroline says track and field was her favorite. “I loved getting to have my dad as my coach, and I really enjoyed running and pole vaulting,” she said. “It was a stress reliever for me.” When asked what it was like to juggle so many commitments, Caroline admitted it could be difficult. “But in the long run, I feel like it made me better at time management, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” she said. Caroline’s favorite teacher at BHS was Coach Justin Johnson. “He was always so encouraging to me in all aspects of my life and would go to any length to help me understand the material,” she said. Her favorite BHS memory, she says, is cheering on the football team during state championship games her junior and senior years. “We won both games on miracle endings,” she said, “which added to the excitement of it all!”

Callie Snell
During her 13 years in Buford City Schools, Callie Snell has definitely left her mark. At BHS, Callie, the daughter of David and Amy Snell and the sister of twin Caroline, managed to balance cross country, cheerleading and dance, all while excelling in academics. “It was definitely a challenge at times,” she admitted, “but I wouldn’t trade my experiences for the world! I loved being able to stay busy and, of course it was fun when all the hard work paid off!” And did it ever pay off — Callie graduated 20th in her class, more than earning her title of honor graduate. Aside from the BHS cross country and cheerleading teams, Callie was also a member of the gymnastics team, and competed for the swim and dive team for a year. In total, she earned 22 var-

sity letters during her high school career. She was also a member of both the National Honors Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Leadership Team. Of all these activities, Callie considers dance to be her favorite. “But,” she said, “I loved everything I did so much!” Her favorite BHS teacher was Ms. Lisa Cole. “She was always there for me when I needed help and truly made learning fun,” she said. For Callie, it’s hard to pick a favorite high school memory, but the most unforgettable, she said, was the football team’s most recent state championship win. “Because I cheered on the sideline, I got to storm the field and give my dad a huge hug right after we won in overtime,” she said. “I will never forget that moment.”

Martin Luther King Jr's, “I have a Dream” speech, Stems from many sermons he did preach. Next, Michael Jordan the G.O.A.T of basketball, Who jumped over defenders and made them look oh so small. Also, Rosa Parks boycotted a bus, She wouldn't give up her seat which caused a great big fuss. Harriet Tubman led hundreds of slaves to be free, The Underground Railroad really helped them flee. Finally, I can't forget about Deion Sanders the great defensive back, Who blitzed the Quarterback and got many sacks. — Extra Special Thanks to Ms. Lisa Cole — An extra special thank you to Ms. Lisa Cole for her devotion to the students, especially the senior class at Buford High School. Ms. Cole is the senior class sponsor and tirelessly gives her all to the job every year. As the senior class sponsor, she plans senior week activities that involve dress-up days and gifts for the seniors each day of that week. Ms. Cole plans and coordinates the graduation practice and the graduation ceremony. She also is in charge of ordering diplomas, organizing cords and seals on the diplomas for
the senior class. If that wasn’t enough, Ms. Cole is the Science Department Chair, Director of Cheerleading, BHS Instructional Coach, Testing Coordinator, Summer School Coordinator, oversees homecoming activities and the parade, as well as being one of the top AP chemistry teachers in the nation. Ms. Cole, the entire Buford community would like to acknowledge your selfless dedication to the betterment of the youth in this city and offer our sincere gratitude for your service to the students at BHS.
