Resident Feature Elliot developed a love of dance during her years at Clayton Valley Dance Academy and Northgate High School and is currently studying Food Science and Technology at Clemson University. This summer, she interned with Nestlé’s Food Research &; Development group in Solon, Ohio, gaining firsthand experience in the science and innovation that drive one of the world’s leading food companies. Like their parents, both embraced community service from an early age, volunteering with organizations including TAPS (Teen and Parent Service Society), Rotary International, the Cancer Support Community, the Keep Tahoe Blue, and Planned Parenthood Generation Action. The Mendelsons’ commitment to service wasn’t reserved for weekends or special occasions. It became part of the fabric of daily life.

ome people talk about making a difference. Barry and Kristin Mendelson have built their lives around it.

For Barry, that journey began with a life-changing moment in 1998 when he was diagnosed with stage I testicular cancer. Fortunately, his treatment was relatively straightforward. Surgery removed the tumor, and he did not need chemotherapy or radiation. But the experience gave him something beyond a clean bill of health: a renewed appreciation for life and a determination to make the most of it. Just one month after his diagnosis, while attending a friend’s wedding, he met Kristin, who would later become his wife. They married in 2002, and together began building a life centered on family, community, and service. “Realizing how lucky I was,” Barry says, “I felt a responsibility to give back.” His first charitable venture began in an unlikely place: the garage. Inspired by his sister, Leslie Morris, whose handcrafted quilts raised thousands of dollars for charity auctions, Barry started building Adirondack chairs from reclaimed wood and old skis. What began as a hobby evolved into a nonprofit called Chairs 4 Charity. Over the next decade, those handcrafted chairs helped raise tens of thousands of dollars for schools and community organizations throughout the area. As Barry’s passion for service continued to grow, so did his family. Barry and Kristin raised two children, Sydney and Elliot, who grew up watching volunteerism modeled at home. Sydney excelled in competitive soccer with Mt. Diablo Soccer, Walnut Creek Surf, and Northgate High School. This past June she graduated from the University of Washington with degrees in Marine Biology and Oceanography. Today, she shares her passion for science and conservation as a Science Instructor at Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo, where she helps connect young people with the natural world and inspires the next generation of environmental stewards. 6

Inspired by the success of Chairs 4 Charity, Barry joined the board of the Cancer Support Community of the San Francisco Bay Area, where he spent eleven years helping guide the organization. During his tenure, he founded and chaired the Investment Committee and served on both the Fund Development and Finance Committees. At the same time, he was active in the Financial Planning Association of the East Bay, serving on its board from 2011 to 2017 and as Board President in 2015. There, he helped promote Financial Planning Day, an initiative that provided free, ethical, professional financial advice to people who otherwise might not have access to it. Community involvement has always been a family affair. While Barry coached youth soccer, Kristin devoted countless hours to local organizations, including the Highlands Elementary PTA, the Northgate High School PFC, TAPS, and the Walnut Creek Historical Society. Together, they demonstrated to their children that giving back is not merely an activity but a responsibility. That commitment continues today. In 2023, Barry joined the board of Youth Homes, a nonprofit dedicated to helping some of Contra Costa County’s most vulnerable children and teens. The organization provides housing, counseling, life-skills training, and support services for young people who have experienced trauma, abuse, neglect, or family instability. With a team of therapists, behavioral specialists, and life-skills coaches, Youth Homes helps SEPTEMBER 2026

young people build brighter futures and create paths toward independence. “Youth Homes is one of those organizations that quietly changes lives every single day,” Barry says. “Many of the kids they serve have experienced challenges that most of us can hardly imagine. What impresses me is that Youth Homes doesn’t just provide shelter or support in a moment of crisis. They provide stability, guidance, and hope. They’re helping young people heal, gain confidence, and build the skills they need to become successful, independent adults. It’s hard to think of work that is more important or more deserving of our support.” For Barry, serving on the board is another extension of the values that have shaped much of his life: helping others overcome adversity, creating opportunities, and investing in brighter futures. Whether supporting families affected by cancer, promoting financial literacy, or helping vulnerable youth find a path forward, the common thread has always been making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

The Mendelsons moved to the Northgate neighborhood in 2016, drawn by its beautiful open spaces, proximity to Northgate High School, and strong sense of community. The larger home also gave them an opportunity to expand one of their favorite hobbies: bringing people together. Friends and family regularly gather around their table for holidays, celebrations, and meals inspired by recipes passed down through generations. Hiking, biking, travel, and reading round out a list of interests that reflects their adventurous spirit and lifelong curiosity. When asked what motivates them, Kristin’s answer is simple: “Our passions are spending time outdoors, exploring the world, and giving back with the goal of making the world a better place.” That philosophy extends into their professional lives as well. Through Elevation Wealth Partners, Barry, Kristin, and their colleagues actively support numerous charitable organizations through both financial contributions and volunteer service.

Their efforts have benefited many of the organizations closest to the Mendelsons’ hearts, including the Cancer Support Community, Youth Homes, Redwood Empire Food Bank, Ruth Bancroft Garden, and Redwood Trails Alliance. Looking at where their children are today, Barry and Kristin see the same curiosity, compassion, and commitment to making a difference that have guided much of their own lives. Whether through science education, food innovation, community leadership, or philanthropy, the family continues to find meaningful ways to contribute to the world around them. Looking back, Barry often reflects on the cancer diagnosis that changed the trajectory of his life. What could have been remembered as a frightening chapter instead became a catalyst for something much larger. For nearly three decades, the Mendelsons have used that second chance to build a life rich with family, purpose, gratitude, and service. And in the process, they have made their community a better place for countless others.

From there, simply shop at Broadway Plaza, save receipts and upload them through the app to start earning points. How It Works School Cents makes supporting your local school as simple as shopping. For every purchase made at Broadway Plaza — whether it’s back-toschool shopping, a dinner out, a salon visit or a holiday gift — shoppers earn points for their designated school by uploading their receipts through the new School Cents app. The more receipts shoppers upload, the more points their school can earn. Bonus points opportunities will be available throughout the program year. Ten local schools were chosen to participate this year, competing for a shared prize pool of up to $15,000 based on the points they accumulate. The Charred Za’atar Cauliflower and Romanesco Salad starts with florets blistered until caramelized and smoky, then tossed with fragrant za’atar, lemon, and olive oil. Earthy, nutty notes from the cauliflower meet the herbaceous, tangy spice blend, while sweet dates and jewel-like pomegranate seeds add contrasting richness and bright pops of color. The result is a warm, aromatic dish that feels both rustic and refined. It is simple to prepare—grill, dress, and serve—and makes a stunning side that impresses guests. The Cara Cara Orange and Kale Salad offers a refreshing counterpoint. Tender massaged kale is brightened by juicy, rosy segments of Cara Cara oranges, their natural sweetness balanced by a light honey garlic dressing and a sprinkle of toasted nuts and cheese. The result is lively, slightly bitter, and wonderfully clean—perfect for lighter entertaining or as a colorful make-ahead option that holds up well. Charred Za’atar Cauliflower and Romanesco Salad Salad • 2 Cups Cauliflower florets • 2 Cups Romanesco florets • 2 Tablespoon Za’atar • 3 Tablespoons Olive Oil In a large bowl add the florets and toss with the olive oil and Za’atar seasoning. Add to a grill pan or regular grill. Cook for 5 to 10 minutes until lightly charred but not burned. Remove to cool. Dressing • 1/2 Shallot, minced • 1 Garlic Clove, minced • 1 Tablespoon Honey • 1 teaspoon Dijon Mustard • 3 Tablespoon Champagne Vinegar • 1/2 Cup Olive Oil • Salt & Pepper to taste Place all the ingredients into a small mason jar and shake well. Let it sit for at least an hour for the flavors to develop. Toppings • 1/2 Cup Pomegranate Seeds • 1/2 Cup Chopped Medjool Dates • 1/2 Cup Toasted Pine Nuts • Italian Flat Leaf Parsley for garnish 10

Cara Cara Orange and Kale Salad Dressing • ½ Minced Shallot • 1 T Honey • 1 Garlic Clove, minced • 1 t. Dijon Mustart • 3 T. Champagne Vinegar • ½ Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil • Salt and Pepper to taste Pour and place all ingredients into a mason jar and shake well. Let sit at least one hour for flavors to develop. Salad •

5 to 6 Cups Tuscan Kale, stems removed and chopped

3 Cara Cara Oranges (or mandarin orange) into segments

•

½ Cup Almonds, salted dry roasted and rough chopped

•

Cup Manchego Cheese, Grated

Add all of the salad ingredients to a large bowl and add half the vinaigrette and toss well. Taste and add more dressing if desired. If you like additional cheese or almonds, feel free to add those along with oranges. Enjoy! SEPTEMBER 2026

4 Oz. Salami, cut into strips

1/3 Cup Peperoncini, chopped small

Dressing •

2 ½ T. Red Wine Vinegar

2 T. Dried Oregano

•

1 T. Lemon Juice, fresh squeezed

•

2 Garlic Cloves, Minced

•

½ t. Salt

•

½ t. Pepper

•

1 ½ Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Add all of the ingredients for the dressing into a mason jar and shake. Let the flavors develop for at least 30 minutes. Add all of the salad ingredients to a large bowl and chill for at least 30 minutes. When ready to serve add a ½ cup of dressing at a time and toss. Add additional dressing to your tastes. Enjoy!

Northgate Cross County off to a fast and fun start By Ruth Seabrook, Cross Country Coach

Northgate Cross Country 10th Annual Alumni Race Castle Rock Regional Park is the annual venue for a fun showdown between our current high school runners and cross country runners of years past. The baseball field in Castle Rock Park provides a generous start line, and this year 60 runners lined up to tackle the 2.2 mile course featuring challenging technical terrain, hills, sand and rocks. Rising Junior Niko Windham won the race, threatened only by a sneak attack by alumni Laurence Seabrook (class of 2016), for the girls alumni Megan Malloy (class of 2022) and Chico State stand out runner, took top female, with Senior Olivia Joseph in hot pursuit and our first female high schooler. Forward Motion Sports in Danville provided prizes to the first male and female, but we also awarded to the following categories:

First Female Middle School Sibyl Soyoguz First Male Middle School - Colin Chen As a cross country coach this is easily my favorite day of the year. It was amazing to host over 80 runners, their families, and alumni, who represented many years past, with a large group from the class of 2021 who we had trained all through the pandemic and were the first in many years to qualify both boys and girls teams to the State meet. Talking to athletes over a fun potluck brunch about their experiences and knowing that the program mattered enough to them to come back to see everyone means a great deal and helped share the proud history of our team with the younger athletes.

Calving Safety in the Open Space By Kendra Strey, Communications and Outreach Manager Grazing animals play an important role in keeping Regional Parks healthy and resilient. Cattle, sheep, and goats help manage grasslands by reducing excess vegetation, which lowers wildfre risk and supports native plants and wildlife. During calving season, typically August through October, park visitors may encounter mother cows and their young along trails. It’s important to give them plenty of space, as protective mothers can become defensive if they feel threatened. • Never approach, touch, or take selfies with calves. • Avoid coming between a mother and her calf. • Keep dogs leashed and away from cattle. By observing from a distance and respecting grazing animals, visitors help protect both wildlife and themselves.
