Hendersons: The Legacy of North Gait Equestrian Center Meet the

In 2004 the Hendersons purchased a 2.39 acre parcel on Northgate Road. It quickly became more than just their dream home. It was the foundation of a life they built together, raising their four daughters and creating something lasting. The property also became home to North Gait Equestrian Center, where thousands of children and adults came to ride, gain confidence, and experience the joy of being around horses.
Jill moved to the Bay Area after attending Southwestern Law School. She began working as a law clerk for Steve Henderson. The two quickly became close friends, and that friendship grew into something more. They married in 1993 and went on to build a life together, welcoming two daughters, Rachel and Hannah, into the family.
Steve grew up in Castro Valley and went to Lincoln Law School in San Francisco. Steve had two daughters with his first wife: Elizabeth and Valerie. He opened his law practice in 1983. Jill adds, “Steve is fluent in Spanish and chose to open his office in Pittsburg, California because he saw it as a place where he could make a meaningful difference.” He practiced criminal and immigration law initially and then moved to personal injury. He was a founding member of Contra Costa Senior Legal Services in Contra Costa County and remained on the board for over 20 years.
Jill practiced both personal injury law and workers’ compensation, while also dedicating substantial time to pro bono work for those who could not afford legal representation. “We are proud of the work we’ve done, serving the community for more than 80 years combined,” Jill says.
In 2004 Jill saw an ad for the property at 1101 Northgate Rd. She clipped it out and saved it, dreaming of someday being able to live there. Just three months later, Steve was looking at a property in Lafayette. Jill then retrieved her little black and white newspaper clipping from a drawer. At that point they had
one horse – Sundance, a Rocky Mountain gaited horse. They fell in love with the home nestled in the scenic foothills of Mt. Diablo and the 30-stall barn, complete with an indoor arena, wash racks, tack rooms, etc. They bought the property.
Rachel and Hannah grew up running barefoot down the barn aisles, riding bareback on the Mt. Diablo trails, playing hide-n-seek in the pitch-black barn. They attended Walnut Acres, Foothill Middle School, and Northgate High School. Despite sports, choir, and leadership programs, their love of all things horse never faded. When they were 15 & 16, they began to teach horseback lessons.
When Rachel left home to attend the University of Nevada, Reno, Hannah ran the riding program herself. She became the sole instructor and director of North Gait and truly formed the foundation of what it later grew to be. She volunteered at the Walnut Creek Library reading to children and also at Xenophon Therapeutic Riding in Orinda. She did all this while attending community college at DVC.
Once Rachel returned from college, Hannah was able to trade places and study at UC Santa Cruz, where she earned her teaching credential and a master’s degree in childhood education. Rachel knew she had BIG shoes to fill when she took over the reins at North Gait Equestrian Center. She was so impressed by her younger sister’s lesson program and wasn’t sure she had what it took to run things. Her mother remarked, “Rachel had nothing to worry about. At just 22 years old, she built a very successful full-time business. She had a staff of 16+ and a herd of 25 horses. They were groomed, trained, ridden, and loved every day. Summer camps were sold out as soon as they were posted. Kids learned how to work here. They learned discipline and respect working around horses, and that carried over into how they treated each other. It was oldfashioned rules. It was fantastic. And people loved it.”
Rachel, now 32, says, “I was so incredibly lucky to have grown up at North Gait, and even luckier that I got to share it with so many people.” North Gait Equestrian Center became one of the premier locations for students of all ages to learn practical and natural horsemanship. Rachel emphasized safe horse handling so that riders could feel capable and confident in any “arena”. One of the most special things about North Gait was that many young adults were able to “earn” their riding time and mentorship through volunteer work at the barn. Her most
successful pupils graduated from the program as capable, independent, and hard-working young people. Her students have gone to ride competitively in rodeo, collegiate level jumping and reining, vet school, and so much more.
Rachel hosted Girl Scout troops from all over Contra Costa County. She ran summer camps, birthday parties, and themed camps for Halloween and Winter Break.
Rachel and Hannah were both married in 2024. Hannah was married at North Gait Equestrian Center, in the beautiful backyard, with the reception and dancing held in the large, covered arena. She now has an 19-month-old and lives in Moraga. Hannah is now a 3rd grade teacher at Sun Terrace Elementary in Concord.
Rachel married a 4th-generation cattleman and moved to his 100-acre ranch in San Juan Bautista where she is learning everything about running a cattle operation.
Jill and Steve are now ready for a new chapter and plan to relocate to Rachel’s ranch. The North Gait property is now for sale, with the hope it will be enjoyed by others who can take full advantage of its setting in the foothills of Mount Diablo, with exceptional trails for riding, biking, and hiking, while being 10 minutes from downtown Walnut Creek. Jill reflects, “We have enjoyed living here beyond anything I can describe. I can only say that this property itself, this location, and everything you can do here is just magical.”

A Proper Dinner Party is One of Life’s Most Civilized Pleasures

In an age of casual cookouts and happy hours, a proper dinner party still stands out as one of life’s most civilized pleasures. Done well, it creates connection, comfort, and lasting memories. Yet the smallest misstep, can leave everyone slightly off-balance. Whether you’re hosting or attending, thoughtful etiquette turns a simple meal into something memorable.
A well-laid table signals care. Begin with a crisp tablecloth or placemats. Place dinner plates in the center, one inch from the table edge. Forks go to the left of the plate (salad fork outside, dinner fork inside). Knives and spoons align on the right, blades facing inward, soup spoon farthest out. The dessert fork and spoon rest horizontally above the plate, fork prongs right, spoon bowl left. If you want to mix up the silverware to all one side, you can add your personal twist.
Glassware forms a neat triangle above the knives: water goblet directly above the knife tip, red-wine glass to its right, white-wine glass slightly forward. You can put wine glasses on one side and the water on the
opposite side. A small bread plate with butter knife sits at the upper left. A quick tip – put your hands out, touch your index fingers to your thumb. The left hand forms a “B” which is the side the bread goes on and the right hand forms a “D” for where the drinking glasses go. Napkins rest on the plate or to the left of the forks. Keep centerpieces low, so guests can see one another. Unscented candlelight is best, so it doesn’t compete with the food.
As host, your job begins long before the doorbell rings. Be ready at least thirty minutes early so you are calm when guests appear. Greet each person warmly by name, take coats, and offer a drink within five minutes. Seat guests thoughtfully—pair lively talkers with quieter ones, separate couples to encourage new conversation.
During the meal, keep an eye on pacing: clear plates only when everyone is finished, and never stack dishes at the table. If someone’s glass is empty, quietly refill without drawing attention. Should a guest spill wine or drop a fork, smile and say, “No worries at all—happens to the best of us,” then replace it discreetly. Your calm sets the tone.
As a guest, arrive 5 to 10 minutes after the stated time—never early, rarely late. Bring a modest gift: a bottle of wine (unless the host specified otherwise), fresh flowers already in a vase, chocolates or a nicely wrapped candle. Hand it to the host with a genuine “Thank you for having us.”
At the table, wait for the host to sit and unfold their napkin before you
do. Place your napkin on your lap immediately. If you must leave the table, rest the napkin on your chair, not the table. Never begin eating until everyone is served. If you finish early, rest utensils side-by-side on your plate to signal you are done. Compliment the host sincerely—“This salmon is perfectly cooked”—but avoid comparing it to other dinners.
Silverware rule is simple: start from the outside and work inward. Cut one bite at a time; never slice the entire piece of meat at once. If you need to sneeze or cough, turn away and cover with your napkin. For wine, hold the glass by the stem, never the bowl. When toasting, make eye contact, clink gently, and sip—do not drain the glass.
Good talk flows like the wine. Offer open-ended questions: “What’s the most interesting thing you’ve read lately?” rather than yes-or-no queries. Avoid politics, religion, money, and health complaints unless the group is very close. Steer away from inside jokes that exclude others. A well-mannered guest remembers: the goal is connection, not performance.

Maybe you’ve seen a neighbor on the cover of a recent edition, or you have a striking story that needs to be told. Either way, contacting Knavolio@bestversionmedia.com with your information is the first step to moving forward.
Give Us The Facts
The next step is providing your story. It’s as easy as describing your favorite hobbies and restaurants in the area, what activities your family participates in within the neighborhood, and why you love your community. All you have to do is fill out a questionnaire or complete a short interview. This process is entirely free and you can provide as much information as you’re comfortable with. We
would also like photos of your smiling family as they are out enjoying all our neighborhood has to offer. You’ll even get set up with our Photographer to capture professional photos of your family doing what they do best—having fun!
During this phase, you will also sign our Feature Article Release, a form that allows us to publish the information you provide.

Once you’ve sent off your completed questionnaire, our Content Coordinator will get started whipping up your article! The best part? You’ll get a sneak peek of the story before it goes to print! We’ll give you an opportunity to review the story to ensure all facts are correct and that you’re happy with the information being shared! We know waiting is the hardest part, but during this time you’ll also be able to place an order to receive copies and share with all your friends and family.

Northgate Sophomore Yuna Ko Receives National Recognition in the Arts

Northgate High School sophomore Yuna Ko has earned national recognition at the 2026 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, receiving both a National Gold Medal and the prestigious Best-in-Grade Award/Scholarship for her comic book, Daltokki ex Machina. The Best-in-Grade distinction is especially notable, awarded to only two students per grade from among all Gold Medal recipients nationwide.
All entries to the Scholastic Awards are judged through a fully anonymous process, ensuring that selections are made without consideration of a participant’s gender, age, ethnicity, or hometown. Works are evaluated by leading figures in the visual and literary arts, including past jurors such as Marc Brown, Kay WalkingStick, Michael Bierut, Philip Pearlstein, and Edward Sorel. Jurors look for works that demonstrate the Awards’ core values: originality, technical skill, and a strong personal voice or vision.
In addition to these honors, Yuna has been invited to the national ceremony at Carnegie Hall this June to celebrate her achievement. We proudly congratulate Yuna on this outstanding accomplishment.

Wrestler Symone Jewell Continues to Achieve Beyond the High School Wrestling Season

Junior Symone Jewell, already a standout wrestler at Northgate High School, has just earned a 4th place medal at the USA Junior National Wrestling Championships in Spokane, WA. The 4th place at nationals secures her standing as a nationally formidable wrestler after she finished 3rd in the California State championship last month. In her Junior year at Northgate, she is 42-2, with 112 career wins overall, three state medals, an NCS championship and a League championship. She was also chosen for the Contra Costa County Youth Hall of Fame for the category of Teamwork. The announcement reads. “Symone Jewell exemplifies excellence in academics, athletics, and service. A 4.0 student, she demonstrates discipline and determination, overcoming personal challenges while maintaining a commitment to her studies and athletics. Symone is also dedicated to
her community, volunteering through her church, the food bank, and the Richmond Homeless Center. She also serves as a Cadet with Contra Costa Fire. She is a standout wrestler, ranked 2nd in California and 6th nationally, and serves as Captain of the Northgate High School Women’s wrestling team, mentoring younger teammates. Symone inspires those around her and represents the highest ideals of character and service.”
