Resident Feature They got engaged in the Maldives on Natalie’s 30th birthday. Natalie says, “He gave me a stuffed corgi (a dog that I always wanted) with the ring attached to a big red bow around his neck. I didn’t see the ring at first and asked if this meant we could get a puppy!” A year later they were married on Kauai, and she got a corgi too! Dan’s dad officiated the wedding, and this memory has become even more special as Dan’s father passed away unexpectedly this year, and they cherish hearing his voice on their wedding video. Dan went to Princeton and played on the water polo team. He graduated in 2004 and worked for Thomas Weisel Partners in San Francisco. The company was acquired by Stifel Financial in 2010, where Dan remains a private wealth advisor. Natalie graduated from the University of San Diego. After college she started a pet resort with her two brothers called The Pawington. It provides boarding, daycare and grooming for cats and dogs. “I’ve always loved animals,” says Natalie, “I was the kid who would bring home stray kittens and as a teen worked with feral cats.” Later Natalie also opened a Pilates studio. After her second child was born she sold her stake in both businesses to focus on being a stay-athome mom. But she still gets her pet fix with their corgi Poppy and a teacup Pomeranian named Tini. Natalie and Dan now have three children. Delilah is 6 and loves swimming, gymnastics and Girl Scouts. She swims for Woodlands Swim Team and was on the County 6 and under relay team. She is a great big sister to her two brothers and is proud of her “superpower of being kind.” Jack is 4 and in preschool. He says that the best days are the ones he gets to play football or baseball with his dad. Jack and Dan both have December birthdays,

he Holligans have built a life here in Northgate “on the best street in Walnut Creek,” says Natalie. “We moved to our street, lovingly nicknamed BOW, 5 years ago. We could not ask for better neighbors…We love it so much, we were able to convince my brother’s family to move next door!” They now have a gate connecting the two backyards so the kids can easily access each other’s homes. Dan, a Walnut Creek native, and Natalie, who grew up on the peninsula, met at a 4th of July party on Coronado Island. They were both living in San Francisco at the time but visiting different friends in San Diego. When they returned to San Francisco, they had their first official date but always commemorate that first meeting with their own 4th of July party.

so it has become a tradition to throw a huge holiday-double birthday party. This year’s theme was mistletoe and monster trucks. And Rory is the grand finale, “the sweetest little boy.” He is 9 months old and is fascinated with his siblings. He was born on 5/5/25 at 5:00 pm and is the 5th family member. “So, we hope he likes the number 5 because we foresee it being his lucky number,” adds Natalie Natalie volunteers her time as one of the social chairs for Woodlands Swim Team and a room mom in Delilah’s class. She runs the Walnut Creek and Area Moms’ Group on Facebook. This group is where moms can build community, get advice, and share fun happenings in the area. She also loves to cook and won the Woodlands Chili Cook-off this year! Dan loves music and is in a local band called Lizards of Lounge. He also loves all sports and he makes sure the family attends a 49ers game each year. The Holligans love to travel and show their children different parts of the world with the goal of inspiring curiosity. They enjoy cruises so they can see many places in one trip. “Dan and I joke that one day when the kids are older, we will be a singing duo on a cruise ship as part of the entertainment. If we don’t get the gig, it’s still a goal to one day do a world cruise.” A fun tradition is dressing up for Halloween in family themed costumes. They’ve done Batman and Crew, Adams Family, the band KISS, Peter Pan and Cinderella.
Their street has a big Halloween Block Party. This group of neighbors also gets together often for wine tasting, poker nights, birthday parties and impromptu gatherings. Natalie adds, “We didn’t buy our house thinking it would be our forever home, but we know now that we could never leave because of our wonderful neighbors have become our best friends.”

How to Get the Best Price on Your Remodel — Without Choosing the Wrong Contractor By Gordon Reese, Gordon Reese Design Build, Resident since 2008
W
e all want the Best Deal!
After 42 years of building and designing hundreds of homes across Walnut Creek, Lafayette, and Danville, the number one regret we still hear from successful homeowners is painfully consistent: “I wish I hadn’t chosen the lowest price.” A cheap estimate looks irresistible on paper, but price is only half the story. If you rely solely on a low bid without vetting the process, you are making a crucial mistake. You wouldn’t purchase a 1.5 million home based only on online pictures and the listing price without physically walking through the property, would you? In remodeling, talking to a contractor’s past clients with similar size projects is your equivalent of walking the property. Ignoring this step means you are entering a six-figure project built on a house of cards: professional guesses, missing details, and the assumption you’ll pay later through debilitating change orders and schedule delays. We’ve watched sophisticated homeowners save a tempting $60,000$80,000 upfront, only to spend double that (and wait 12–24 extra months) fixing surprises the low bidder never bothered to plan for. The truth is simple: You cannot get an accurate, predictable price without a complete, up-front pre-construction process. Relying on a low bid is an expensive form of self-sabotage that costs far more than it saves.
The Design-First, Price-Later Trap
Before comparing estimates, homeowners must guard against the industry’s most common pitfall: the Design-to-Trap approach. A company offers low-cost—or even “free”—design work based on vague ideas and a broad budget range. Without contacting past clients to learn what the real remodeling experience was actually like, homeowners often move forward unaware of the risks. They then spend months refining plans and falling in love with a vision that may never match the final price. Only after that emotional investment does the contractor reveal the real construction cost—often 1.5x to 2x higher than the original range. At that point, homeowners feel stuck: either pay the inflated price or start redesigning from scratch. It’s an unethical tactic that manipulates your time, energy, and financial goals.
Our Solution: Planning for Predictability
At Gordon Reese Design Build, our process completely reverses the industry standard. We don’t guess at a price; we invest in accurate information first. Every project we do begins with our Feasibility Study. This fixedprice, low-risk diagnostic stage protects your investment from the very beginning. During the Study, we focus entirely on due diligence. We: •
•
Visit in Person: Fully investigate the complex structural and infrastructure challenges of your specific home. We look beyond the surface to identify unseen expenses like necessary electrical or plumbing upgrades. Meet with all Decision Makers: Finalize your remodeling goals, priorities, and lifestyle needs, ensuring alignment between vision and reality.
•
Deliver the Truth: Establish a detailed scope of work and, crucially, deliver a realistic investment range you can trust.
•
This Study is your control stage. When it’s complete, you walk away with invaluable, reliable information. You can then make a clear, no-pressure decision to proceed with us, or not.
The Gordon Reese Promise: Design-to-Budget with 3D Clarity
If you choose to move forward, our Detailed Design phase is always governed by the investment range established in the Feasibility Study— we design to a budget, never the reverse. This phase includes cutting-edge 3D design, allowing you to see and virtually walk through your space before construction begins. It helps you make confident, informed decisions, prevents costly errors and second-guessing, and ensures the final result aligns with your vision and quality expectations. This entire sequence is the only way to lock in accountability and predictability. It keeps final construction costs within a tight 5-8% of the original range and ensures your project finishes on time and on schedule.
Take the First Strategic Step
The lowest price today is rarely the lowest cost tomorrow. We invite you to invest five minutes now to protect six figures later. You can join us for our free Remodeling Seminar on Wednesday, February 19th at 5:45 pm in our Walnut Creek design studio, or schedule a personalized consultation call with me. Looking forward to helping you get it right the first time. Happy Remodeling! Visit our website for more information: www.gordonreese.com

Business Profile
Combining Compassion and Care with Creativity By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991 Natalya Panda opened Permanent Makeup Plus Cosmetology School two years ago in Walnut Creek, at 1399 Ygnacio Valley Rd. She saw it as the perfect opportunity to merge her background in nursing with her creative side. “I’ve always been drawn to helping people feel confident and cared for. My background in nursing gave me a deep respect for precision, safety, and patient comfort, while my training in cosmetology opened up a creative side where I could enhance natural beauty. Permanent makeup felt like the perfect blend of both worlds it allows me to use my medical knowledge to ensure procedures are safe, while also applying artistry to help clients wake up feeling confident every day,” stated Natalya. The studio offers top-quality services in microblading, lip blush, eyeliner, and medical tattooing all designed to enhance natural beauty with precision and care. As a licensed cosmetology school, they also empower future artists with hands-on education and certification in the latest aesthetic techniques. Natalya’s philosophy is simple: “beauty should feel empowering, safe, and natural. I believe in enhancing what’s already there rather than
changing it, so every client leaves feeling like the best version of themselves. It’s about combining compassion with creativity to help people feel confident, cared for, and radiant, inside and out.” Natalya’s workday is made fun by connecting with clients, sharing stories and creating a welcoming atmosphere. “My business is built on more than just services; it’s built on relationships,” added Natalya. “Whether it’s playing good music, celebrating small wins, or laughing together, I believe beauty should always come with joy.” When not working, Natalya loves spending time with her partner, kids, and pets. They are an active part of this community, supporting other small businesses and volunteering when they can. “It’s all about building connections and uplifting one another. My family and I feel luck to be surrounded by such a supportive and vibrant community.” “Beauty is deeply personal, and I want people to know that this is a welcoming space where they can feel comfortable, confident, and celebrated. My goal is to make a positive impact not only
on how people look, but on how they feel.” Natalya is waiting to welcome you to this premier beauty and cosmetology center. website: permanentmakeupplus.com Phone: 925-766-2803

Nostalgic Comfort Foods with Modern Twists: Diners seek emotional refuge in classics like chicken pot pie, meatloaf, shrimp cocktail, and smashed burgers, but elevated—think gourmet versions with global spices or shareable formats.

Global Fusion and “Flavor Escapism”: Bold, escapist flavors
s we enter 2026, food trends are all about bold flavor, health, global influences, elevated comfort food, and truly authentic plant-based dishes. Restaurants are leaning into nostalgia, fearless global fusion, quiet luxury, wellness-focused menus, and the bold return of tallow as a star ingredient. Wine lovers rejoice: sparkling is everywhere, sophisticated non-alcoholic options are booming, heritage and indigenous grapes are back, new regions are rising, and luxury bottles are reaching new heights. Snacking gets smarter with evolved proteins, more fiber, gourmet air-fried bites, sourdough-infused treats, and irresistible plant-based options. 2026 is delicious, conscious, and unapologetically exciting.
Here are the trends: •

Malou predicts growth in Traditional English, Eastern European, and Asian fusions, with cross-cultural chef collabs reimagining street foods upscale. NRA ties this to a desire for “connection and creativity.” •

Low/No-Alcohol Wines Dominate Moderation: No- and low-alcohol wines surge as the “next big thing,” with sparkling formats leading (70% of no/low volumes) and low-alcohol stills growing through 2028. Heritage and Indigenous Grape Revivals: Forgotten varieties like Touriga Nacional (Portugal), Albariño (Southern England), and native EU grapes gain traction for their story-rich authenticity, blending tradition with innovation in lighter formats. Regenerative: Plant-Based Jerky or Upcycled Veggie Chips (e.g., DryFarmed Tomato Crisps) Authentic, eco-sourced picks like women-farmer jerky or upcycled mushroom “bacon” chips emphasize sustainability and whole-food nutrition.

Perfect Star Heating, Cooling & Electrical: A Story of Heart and Integrity Perfect Star Heating, Cooling & Electrical was born out of resilience and a simple but powerful vision: to serve families with kindness, integrity, and care. For founders Chris and Christina Donzelli, this company represents more than a business—it’s a testament to faith, family, and the belief that blessings are meant to be shared. Chris spent nearly a decade building a reputation as one of the Bay Area’s most respected HVAC professionals, known for his craftsmanship, integrity, and commitment to customers. In 2012, he co-founded a company that grew to nearly $10 million in revenue, and grew into a large, well-established operation. But in 2016, an unexpected and deeply challenging turn of events changed everything. Overnight, the security they had built was gone. “I couldn’t believe what was happening,” Chris recalls. “We lost income, health coverage, even our vehicles. I started to feel defeated.” That feeling didn’t last long. Christina reminded him of who he was—and what they could build together. “We founded this company with the freedom to help people whenever they needed us, without limitations,” Christina shares. “Even though it was scary, I believed in Chris and supported him every step.” From that moment, Perfect Star was born. Christina named the company, and together they shaped a vision rooted in family values and community care. From the start, Perfect Star wasn’t just about heating and cooling—it was about giving back. Their Perfect Star Gives Back program reflects their commitment to supporting local families and community initiatives. “Being able to give back to the people who give so much to us… that is the greatest reward of all,” Christina says. Chris’s passion for the trade runs deep. “I have a passion for the comfort business, and for keeping people comfortable,” he says with a smile. “When I walk into a home and help someone feel comfortable again, I feel

like Superman.” But his greatest joy comes from watching his team thrive—buying homes, starting families, and building lives they’re proud of. “Teaching others this trade is one of the biggest reasons I do what I do,” Chris explains. “I love to develop people and lead from the front.” Today, Perfect Star has grown from a dream born in adversity to a trusted name serving Contra Costa and Alameda Counties. A 3-time Best of Bay Area winner, with nearly 50 employees, the company remains grounded in its core values: We Are Family. We Are Kind. We Have Integrity. These principles guide every decision, ensuring that customers feel valued and cared for. At Perfect Star, comfort goes beyond temperature—it’s about peace of mind. When you invite us into your home, you’re joining a family that cares deeply about your well-being. As Chris reflects, “We didn’t know it then, but that moment of loss was really our Alpha and Omega—the end of one chapter and the beginning of something far greater. NORTHGATE LIVING CA 17

Girls Flag Football: The Future is Bright By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991
T
his year was the 3rd year that flag football has been a high school sport at Northgate.
It is growing in popularity with the female athletes; this year 55 girls tried out for 38 spots to fill the JV and Varsity rosters. It is the first year that Physical Education teacher Mike Ahn coached the team, leading them to a 6-6 league record and 10-12 overall record. Ahn has coached many teams over his 30+ year career but had taken the past ten years off to be home more with his children. “The only thing that could have brought me back to coaching was flag football,” said Ahn. “I love the sport. I had seen girls have the opportunity to play flag football in the private school system, but it had not been available in the public schools. I was so excited to coach this team.” Most of the girls are two or three sport athletes, also playing a variety of sports like soccer, basketball, lacrosse, track & field, etc. They did not grow up playing football, but as athletes have done well adapting their skills to this new sport. First year flag football player Taelyn Jriyasetapong is one of only three players in the DAL league to be named 1st Team in both offense and defense. Her records are: 22 Touchdowns, 100 Receptions, just under 900 yards rushing, and 7 interceptions on defense. She played half back and quarterback in the last 9 games.
Sophia Fulp, Taelyn Jriyasetapong, Donatella Borvice and Ashley Herman
Other athletes who were honored include: Honorable Mention Offense: Ashley Herman (Sr) and Zoe Respicio (Jr) Honorable Mention Defense: Avery Dell (10th) and Grace York (10th) 3rd Team Defense: Angie Zuniga (10th) 1st Team Defense: Sophia Fulp (Sr) and Taelyn Jriyasetapong (Sr) 1st Team Offense: Taelyn Jriyasetapong (Sr) Ahn added, “We have a great group of girls. The future is definitely bright!” Watch for their schedule next year. They play in the fall on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Support Walnut Acres Elementary at the 2026 Auction Gala By Stephanie Talyat
W
alnut Acres Elementary is gearing up for one of the most anticipated events of the year—our Annual Auction Gala, happening on Friday, March 27, 2026. This festive evening brings families, neighbors, and local businesses together in support of programs that enrich the learning experience for every student on campus. The Auction Gala plays a vital role in sustaining key academic and enrichment opportunities at Walnut Acres. Proceeds from the event directly support reading and math intervention, classroom teaching aides, instructional materials and subscriptions, and family & community events. These programs help create a dynamic, well-rounded education that inspires students and strengthens our community. As we prepare for this special event, we are inviting local businesses and neighbors to take part. We are currently seeking gift cards, event tickets, goods or services, and unique experiences, such as behind-the-scenes tours or special outings. We also offer a range of sponsorship opportunities for those who would like additional visibility at the gala and throughout our online auction. With participation from over 500 Northgate families, the gala provides a wonderful opportunity to highlight local businesses while supporting the school. All contributors are acknowledged on our auction site, and sponsors receive additional recognition in the event program and at the gala itself. If you are interested in offering an item, contributing an experience, or exploring sponsorship options, you can learn more and submit through our website: https://www.walnutacrespfc.net/auction Thank you for helping strengthen Walnut Acres Elementary and supporting the programs that make our school community exceptional. Please get in touch with us before Feb. 9.
