Welcome to our August issue of Northgate Living CA. Even though school seems to start earlier every year, there is still plenty of summer weather left, and I hope you are enjoying the warm days, backyard barbeques, and opportunities to attend events in our great city!. In this issue you will find lots of information about events going on around Walnut Creek. We also present the Shahvar family as our cover story this month, a family that has been providing a place to gather and enjoy home cooking right here in Walnut Creek for over 30 years at the Buttercup Diner and Bar. It’s a true family run business with several locations in addition to Walnut Creek. Enjoy reading about their legacy.
I’m eager to hear from you and share your stories whether you have gardening or book tips, an adorable pet, an interesting adventure to share, a hobby, a recipe, a charity you’re involved with, or any other topic you think the Northgate neighbors would like to hear more about. purchased Buttercup Kitchen on North Main Street in 1988. “We envisioned a casual welcoming place where families could gather and enjoy scratch-made, homestyle food,” adds Debbie. “In the early years I was a stay-home mom. As the business grew, I became more involved and eventually took over recipe development and menu design. After 8 years on North Main Street, they moved the restaurant to Ygnacio Valley Road, where they are still located today. In 1999, they decided to move their family to Walnut Creek to be part of the community they served. They chose Northgate for its good schools and family-oriented culture.
Their three kids attended Northgate High School, where Jon and Ben played football, and Jessica was a cheerleader.

avid and Debbie Shahvar have built a family legacy together. Its roots go way back to their college days when each of them worked in restaurants to pay their way through college. In 1980 David was the regional manager at Smugglers, Inc., a steakhouse in southern California. Debbie was a waitress, still in college at Cal Poly Pomona. She shares they story of their first meeting, “One day, I was asked to wait on him while he was having lunch with my boss—and I accidentally spilled part of his meal on his lap! That must have made an impression, because a few days later he asked me out. Our first date was at a Chinese restaurant, where David told me he was ready to settle down and wanted six kids! While we didn’t quite make it to six, we’ve been happily married for 44 years and raised three wonderful children together.”
The Shahvars moved to northern California in 1984 when David, who was then working for El Torito restaurant, was transferred to San Leandro. After living in Dublin and San Ramon and years of working for large restaurant corporations, they decided to take the leap and open their own restaurant. They
Over the years they changed the name to Buttercup Diner and Bar to better reflect their mission of being like an East Coast Diner where food is made from scratch. The menu is full of homestyle classics like meatloaf, turkey dinner, pork chops, and burgers, sandwiches and salads. Breakfast options and homemade pies are also served. They have also added locations in Oakland, Concord and Vallejo. All three of their kids have joined the family business; Jon and Ben run the business operations and Jessica, who attended culinary school, now handles recipe development. Debbie adds, “Our family legacy is something we are incredibly proud of. We’ve had our restaurant business for 38 years, which in itself feels meaningful—but what’s even more special is seeing it continue into the next generation. It started with the two of us building something from the ground up, but now our children have taken active roles in the business in their own ways. It’s one thing to build something for

yourself, but it’s another to see it become something your children want to be part of and grow. Even our grandchildren talk about wanting to work at Buttercup one day, which is something that makes us very proud.”
Jon is married to Rachel, and they have two daughters, Cece and Stella. They live in Orinda. Ben is married to Brianna, and they have two sons, Lior and Elan, and live in Pleasant Hill. Jessica lives in Oakland with her 16-year-old Pomeranian/Pekingese mix who is very much a part of the entire Shahvar family. Being together with their kids and grandkids for holidays and special events is also a priority for the Shahvars and is possible since they all live close by.
Debbie shares, “Walnut Creek has always felt like a warm, family-oriented community. We value the friendships we’ve built here. One of our favorite neighborhood traditions is visiting the horse stables, something we started when Jessica was young and now continue with our grandchildren.” Debbie is also a member of the Northgate Afternoon Book Group, meeting monthly at different members’ homes. She and David are also part of a food and wine group that gathers at each other’s homes, each couple bringing a dish paired with wine. “It’s a fun and social way to
connect with friends in the neighborhood.” And Debbie reflects, “We feel very lucky to be part of such a warm and welcoming community.”

Crowd-pleasing dips for your summer barbeques

With summer in full swing, casual entertaining takes center stage. Whether you’re hosting backyard gatherings, poolside parties, or intimate dinners on the patio, appetizers are my go-to choice. And nothing disappears faster than a great dip. Here are three of my all-time favorites - each one a crowd-pleaser with its own personality, from fresh and crunchy to warm and indulgent to deeply personal.
Parmesan and Pecan Dip
This bright, fresh dip is a consistent crowd favorite—almost like enjoying a one-bite salad. The combination of savory Parmesan, toasted pecans, and crisp vegetables delivers a beautiful burst of flavor and texture in every scoop. The colorful presentation, served with vibrant green and purple endive leaves as the perfect edible vessels, makes it as beautiful as it is delicious. I pick up the endive leaves at Trader Joe’s— they’re always fresh and make assembly effortless.
Ingredients
• 1 C. finely diced celery
• 1 C. chopped roasted pecans
• 1 C. chopped parmesan
Dressing:
• 2 small garlic cloves minced and mashed with ½ teaspoon of salt
• 1 T. Mayo
Directions
• ½ C. chopped flat leaf parsley
• Endive leaves (3 to 4 whole endives)
• 2 T. Fresh squeezed lemon juice
• 2 T. Olive oil
• 3 to 4 grinds of fresh pepper
1. Roast the chopped pecans for about 10 minutes in a 375-degree oven. You can skip this step by purchasing the dry roasted pecan pieces at Trader Joes. Blend the dressing ingredients in a small mason jar and shake until well blended. Place in the refrigerator until ready to use.
2. Chop the first four ingredients and put everything, except the pecans in a bowl into the refrigerator until ready to serve. Set pecans aside. When ready to serve, add the pecans and dressing. Toss well and transfer to a pretty serving bowl. Add to a platter with the endive leaves. Use a small spoon to have guests top each endive leaf.
Warm Bourbon French Onion Dip
If you’re looking for something warm and utterly addictive, this is it. Rich, deeply caramelized onions meet a splash of bourbon for a sophisticated twist on the classic. I serve it bubbling hot straight from a cast iron skillet, surrounded by golden homemade croutons. Warning: it will vanish quickly—don’t say I didn’t warn you!
Ingredients
• 2 large, white onions thinly sliced
• 4 tablespoons butter
• 2 teaspoon brown sugar
• 1 package (8 oz), cream cheese softened to room temperature
• 1 cup Sour Cream
• ½ Cup Mayonnaise
• 1.5 cups shredded Gruyere
Directions
cheese (plus extra for the top).
• 2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
• 1 teaspoon garlic powder
• ½ teaspoon dried thyme
• ½ teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon pepper
• ¼ Cup Bourbon
1. Melt the butter in a pan over medium heat. Add the onions and brown sugar. Cook for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring often, until the onions are soft and deeply golden. Just before taking off the burner, add the bourbon and let cook one minute. Let them cool for a few minutes.
2. In a bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, mayonnaise and sour cream until smooth. Softening simply means leaving the cream cheese on the counter for 30 minutes before mixing so it does not get lumpy.
3. Stir the cooked onions, cheese, and seasonings into the cream cheese mix.
4. Spread the mixture into a baking dish. Top with a little more cheese. Bake at 375°F for 20 to 25 minutes until it is hot and bubbling on top.
5. Service with toasted crostini’s. I use a Semi Freddie’s baguette, cut thin slices, brush with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Bake until golden brown.
Cathy Dip
This creamy, flavorful dip holds a special place in my heart. Originally a Martha Stewart recipe for Shallot and Peppercorn Dip, it was a family favorite that my beloved sister Cathy made for every holiday gathering. She always served it simply, with a big bowl of Lay’s potato chips— the classic pairing that everyone loved. I have made it and used it for individual crudité’s. On June 18th, my dear sister passed away suddenly. The loss has been heartbreaking surreal. I always called her “My Sister, My Sister,” and we often talked about growing old together. As I shared in my eulogy at her service, I will continue her tradition by making this dip for every gathering—but I’ve lovingly renamed it Cathy Dip in her honor. I love you My Sister, My Sister and will miss you terribly!
Ingredients
• 1 cup sour cream
• 2 tablespoons buttermilk
• 2 large shallot, finely minced
• 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
Directions
(freshly cracked)
• ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
• ¼ teaspoon salt
Put the sour cream and buttermilk into a medium bowl. Stir until smooth. Add the minced shallot, cracked black pepper, and salt. Mix well to combine. Cover the bowl and let it chill in the fridge for 1 hour so the flavors can blend together.

Gordon Reese – A different approach to remodeling

Gordon Reese has been helping homeowners transform their homes for over 50 years. His process might be different than what you might expect because he approaches remodeling with the belief that it should be exciting, not stressful. It should help homeowners solve design issues and be beautiful.
Gordon’s process is to first help homeowners envision what is possible. He says, “There’s something incredibly rewarding about helping create spaces where families gather, connect, celebrate milestones and create memories. I enjoy solving complex problems and helping people improve their daily lives through thoughtful design and construction.” Next, he helps create a realistic budget and provides clear expectations. He adds, “We invest heavily up front because careful planning creates better projects…I learned homeowners value predictability and peace of mind just as much as beautiful design.”
Gordon began working in construction at 17 years old because he loves working with his hands and creating something tangible. He worked alongside a contractor for years, then in 1984 he started his own company in the Piedmont/Oakland area. “Over time,” he adds, “I realized homeowners weren’t struggling with construction nearly as much as uncertainty. They wanted someone they could trust…That realization led me to create our Design Build process, which we brought to Walnut Creek nearly 20 years ago.”
Gordon and his wife Michelle live here in Northgate. They enjoy mountain biking and hiking with their dogs, spending time downtown and with their three daughters and three grandsons.
In April Gordon received the NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) Peter H. Johnson Image Award, which recognizes initiatives that strengthen the industry’s reputation through undertakings like civic or charitable projects, workforce development, and community initiatives. Gordon says, “It was especially meaningful because it recognized the values we’ve worked hard to build our business around. We strongly believe in giving back and are proud supporters of Arm of Care and Save Mt. Diablo.” Gordon has helped run a cycling club for youth who want to learn the sport and enjoy the natural beauty in and around Mt. Diablo.

Celebrate National Thrift Shop Day with
the 2026 East Bay
Thrift Store Crawl!

National Thrift Shop Day, celebrated each year on August 17, is a reminder that thrift stores do far more than offer great finds at great prices. Many thrift stores are nonprofit organizations, using pre-owned items and store sales to support meaningful work in their communities. When you shop or contribute items at a nonprofit thrift store, the dollars raised are reinvested back into the community through programs such as healthcare, housing support, job training, youth mentorship, animal welfare and protection, mental health programs, and other essential resources.
From August 1-18, 2026, explore the East Bay while supporting local causes during the 2026 East Bay Thrift Store Crawl. Visit any participating store and make a purchase of $10 or more to receive your crawl brochure and first sticker. Continue visiting the remaining locations and collect a sticker with each qualifying purchase. Once you’ve collected stickers from all 11 participating organizations, turn in your completed brochure for a chance to win the Grand Prize Bundle, eleven $25 gift cards, one from each participating shop. The drawing will take place during the week of August 25.

Pre-game Alumni Gathering on Northgate’s football field 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm. Food and Fun. Cost to be determined.
Northgate Varsity Football Homecoming Game 7 pm. If not attending pre-game dinner and not contributing to Scholarship Fund, cost of game is $10

Tour of Northgate HS 11 am - Free Reunion gathering at The Greenery in W.C. 6 pm - 12 midnight. $125 - includes buffet dinner and band/dancing. (a compiled band of notable musicians in our area!)
