And now this: The Walnut Creek area is warned to “Brace for a Surge in Natural Gas Prices.” So, how much is this surge supposed to be? Oh, just a little 20% increase on top of your already high heating bill! If you paid $180 or so per month last winter, count on spending $220 a month this year. Increases appear unavoidable. And once they hit, there won’t be any “barequipment. It’s supply and demand like always. Except for one thing…

Meet the Thomsens:
Bonded through Music By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991
I
n a family where music plays a central role, it is no surprise that Karl and Emeline Thomsen met while both were studying music at Louisiana State University. Karl was earning his Doctorate of Musical Arts (after studying music at Yale, University of Northern Iowa and Murray State University and earning BA’s in Legal Theory and Metaphysics at Trinity University); Emeline was earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Music. “We were in the same friendship circles and we, over time, got to know each other…I left LSU the next year to teach at Wesleyan College in Iowa,” explained Karl. After a year apart and extremely costly phone bills, they reunited in Iowa while Emeline got her Master’s degree at the University of Iowa. After they moved to New York together, Karl added, “I do remember, quite vividly, when I knew she was going to be special to me: we were standing outside of a church (we were hired singers) with a group of musicians and were deciding where to eat for lunch. Emeline was wearing a taupe dress that had some trim lacing around the front. As we were talking, I remember fixating on her eyes and not being able to contribute to the food conversation.” The couple married soon after in 2000. Karl’s career has spanned several industries including education, music, finance and technology. After teaching at the college level, he worked in finance at Bear Sterns in New York then spent time in advertising. But, eventually his love of music drew him back to teaching. He took a position at St. Xavier High School in Ohio where he taught, coached lacrosse and developed the school’s music program. In 2015 a job in San Francisco at the software development company Infuse brought the family to Walnut Creek and the Northgate neighborhood. When not teaching yoga, Emeline sings opera and musical theater. She also donated her talents to Valle Verde Elementary School where she produced three musicals. She also gives her time to the Woodlands Swim Team where the couple’s two youngest children swim and is the current President of the Northgate High School Parent Faculty Club. “I believe it is important to give to the community to which you belong. When my daughter decided to go to Northgate, I knew that I wanted to find a way to be involved - although I never anticipated it being PFC President. When the opportunity was presented to me, I thought it definitely fit the bill for involvement (!) and it would also be an opportunity for me to try something new.” The four Thomsen children range in age from 26 to 11. The oldest, Lauren, is married to Thomas Boeing and lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. After she finished her degree at the University of Tennessee
The Thomsen family at Redwood Canopy Tour near Santa Cruz
in Knoxville, she began a nursing program at the University of Cincinnati. Both Thomas and Lauren enjoy music and the arts. Olivia is 22 and attends UC San Diego studying sociology. She has found her voice in advocating for the under-served. She is engaged to Brian Wintz, an audio engineer. Lydia is 14. Between singing, music, lacrosse and friends, she is a very busy Northgate High School Freshman. Jonas, the only boy in the family, is 11 and attends Foothill Middle School. He loves to play lacrosse, swim, and sing. At Valle Verde he starred as young Simba in the Lion King and the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz. In addition to making music together, the family enjoys playing cards and board games and discovering new foods and restaurants. Karl coaches lacrosse at Northgate and is the Boys Director of Walnut Creek Warriors Lacrosse Club. He says it is a good way to stay connected to his kids. “I also have the opportunity to build the program, grow the sport and work with high school students again. Lacrosse is a bit of an under-served sport. As it gains in popularity (fastest growing sport in the country), the need for knowledgeable personnel and sound structure is spiking. I would love to see the sport build the kind of infrastructure that will contribute to long term success.” Karl also somehow manages to continue with music, performing with a group at San Francisco’s Bohemian Club. The family also includes four furry members. Moxie is the eldest, a 10-year-old Shih Tzu, who now spends her days lying about

and warding off the other pets. There are two French Bulldogs: Boudreaux, who is named for a character from Emeline’s Louisiana roots, and Mr. Bojangles, a puppy who is cared for mostly by Jonas. The 11-year-old gets up at 6:45 each day to feed him and take care of him. Lastly, there is Mable, the 2-year-old tabby cat adopted from a neighbor. Recent trips have taken the Thomsens to Kauai and New York City. They are planning a trip to Korea this summer and want to say thank you to the neighborhood. “We love this area and love the friends we have made,” says Karl. The result of the Thomsen family motto, “Go, but go passionately,” is in full force as the relative new-comers have

If you want to get out from under high interest rate charges from credit cards, student loans, or other forms of debt, then a cash-out refinance might be the solution for you.
A great way to save money on your home loan is to refinance for a lower interest rate. Just a small drop in interest rate can lower your mortgage payment significantly.
Refinancing your home to take advantage of its equity can be a great way to get the funds you need for home improvements, retirement, vacations and more.
Do you plan to stay in your home for an extended period? If so, then refinancing to a fixed-rate mortgage is a great way to keep your payment from rising.

Cortisol:
Too Much of a Good Thing? By Carolyn Krieg, DO and Paul H Kim, MD, Medical Institute of Healthy Aging (Previously Previ Medical Group)
S
tress has been linked to just about every health problem there is. And unfortunately, few of us are free from the multiple stressors of everyday life. Stress comes in many forms: divorce, loss of a loved one, high pressure job, illness, surgery, chronic pain, to name a few. Our bodies are hardwired to react to stress in ways that protect us. Most of us are familiar with the “fight-or-flight” response of our body when under an acute stress. This response is a combination of nerve and hormonal signals that prompts your adrenal glands (located above your kidneys) to release a surge of hormones, including adrenalin and cortisol.
a natural rhythm. It should be high in the morning, allowing us to wake up and start the day, and then gradually decreases. It should be at it’s lowest at night, allowing us to sleep. This rhythm can get out of sync, for example low in the morning or afternoon when we need it to keep us going, and high at night causing sleep disruption.
Adrenalin increases your heart rate, elevates your blood pressure, and increases blood supply to your brain and muscles. Cortisol mobilizes energy (glucose) to fuel the action necessary to deal with the stressor. It also enhances the brain’s use of glucose and increases the availability of substances for tissue repair. Another important role of cortisol is to inhibit functions that are non-essential or detrimental during fight-or-flight. It alters the immune response and suppresses the digestive system, reproductive system, and growth processes.
Chronic stress and its negative impact on our health is so common that we do adrenal testing on many patients we see. If adrenal dysfunction is identified, there are ways to treat this with nutritional supplementation, dietary changes, and lifestyle modification to get them functioning normally again. Restoring our body’s ability to “rest and digest” is crucial to our health and well-being. Testing is an important first step. Call today to learn more about adrenal testing and how we can help.
With all the vital functions cortisol plays during times of stress, it can wreak havoc when chronically elevated by a stressful lifestyle or a long-term stressor. Furthermore, when we’re in a constant state of fight-or-flight, our body can get “stuck” in the stress response and forget how to “rest-and-digest” even when the stressor is gone. High cortisol levels can be deceiving, giving us energy to be highly productive, but at the same time robbing us of much needed sleep and keeping us wired too much of the time. Chronically high cortisol production puts us at increased risk of numerous health problems, including: • • • • • • • • • • •
mood swings and depression sleep problems memory and concentration impairment blood sugar dysregulation and insulin resistance digestive problems thyroid imbalance female hormone imbalance weight gain (especially around the belly) chronic fatigue loss of muscle and bone density impaired healing and cell regeneration
Standard tests for adrenal function aren’t very helpful for the majority of people experiencing symptoms. If your doctor orders the typical cortisol test, it’s difficult to see anything other than the most severe cases of adrenal dysfunction (eg, Addison’s disease or Cushing’s syndrome). We use a salivary or urine test to check your cortisol at multiple points during the day to assess how well your adrenal glands are functioning throughout the day. Cortisol follows

Stories from a Walnut Creek Seniors Club Van Driver – Part 2 By Frank Napoli, Resident since 1996
I
’m lucky to be one of several volunteer drivers for the Walnut Creek Seniors Club. I have the privilege of taking out a WC minivan for several hours on Thursdays to drive seniors to do grocery shopping, or doctor visits, or down to the Community Center for some socializing over myriad of activities. Over the years I have enjoyed the stories that the seniors share with me. Last month I shared some of my favorites; here are two more. The stories are amazing! Samia Darwish regularly attends Acalanes Adult Education for their art classes. Originally from Cairo, Egypt and raised Muslim, her mom sent Samia to a private Catholic school at age 14 run by nuns. This school had special classes for art students, and Samia’s mother noticed a certain inclination and natural ability in her daughter to draw and use oil paints. As the story goes, in those days students made their own canvases by buying special material and then hire a carpenter to stretch it on a wooden frame. They then would add a special product to the canvas in order to make the paint adhere to the surface. A lot different than today where you can just go into an art supply store and buy any number of ready-made framed canvases. This artist painted over two hundred oil paintings when she lived in Chicago. The paintings remained in Chicago when she moved to California many years ago. Lately Samia finds a lot of enjoyment working in colored pencils. And finally, there is the story of Edward (Eddy) Rettagliata, born and raised in the Bay area in 1934 (85 years-old). Eddy played Triple AAA baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals organization.
He was being heavily recruited by major league teams at the ripe age of 19, a 2nd baseman who could turn a double-play with blinding speed. Of course, baseball players didn’t earn what they can command today, and there was a lot of bus rides to different ballparks to deal with. Eddy was dating is current wife, Marline, whose dad was the owner/founder of Colombo Bakery in Oakland, opening its doors in 1896 and famous for its sourdough bread. As much as Eddy loved playing baseball, the reality was that he could not earn enough money to raise a family, even holding a second job during the off season as many ballplayers did at the time. So, Eddy took the sure bet and went to work at the bakery earning much more money without the hassle of the constant travel and never looked back.

Testimonial from a Resident
"We had a great experience with Jordan and his crew. I'm a stickler for communication. I always was able to contact Jordan by text or phone. He returned calls promptly which really helped our relationship. He also has a project manager who follows up on the progress. I remodeled a bathroom, two fireplaces, flooring, and new doors. The subs he uses are top quality and they were all polite and cleaned up daily. I have referred many friends and would not hesitate to use them again for another project." BT.W Danville, Ca

Even after Eddy took a full-time position at Colombo and was doing well, he was still being pursued by major league teams – such was the talent of this senior. The stories are endless and serve as a valuable lesson to those of us who have come after. At the risk of sounding preachy, I get to hear about a common value system absent from today’s society. These seniors seemed to share a sense of personal responsibility contrasted with the age of blame we live in today. Their sense of humility, dignity and modesty is admirable. And their selfless work ethic exemplifies what today’s parents should instill in every child. Great role models. It’s no wonder they are referred to as the “The Greatest Generation.”

Who would have thought?! By David N. Nissim, Managing Partner, Nissim & Gavidia Wealth Management & Financial Planning, LLC
T
he month of December is historically a good month for the financial markets, but not in 2018. Who would have thought that from the beginning of October to the end of December the S & P 500 would go down 20% from its high of the year? Not unheard of, but very unusual. What might have triggered that sharp, and I would say violent, selloff in the markets? There were still two items hanging out there. The China trade agreement, but more importantly, a comment by the head of the Federal Reserve who stated that even though we had already seen our economy slow down from its previous levels, that we could see another 2-3 more hikes in interest rates in the next 12-14 months. Anticipating that might happen, the markets sold off very quickly. As we now know the Fed should not have made that statement that essentially spooked the markets. And as soon as they started to realize that it would not be necessary, or smart, to raise interest rates under the circumstances, the market snapped back to the upside. The point of all of this is the market got very emotional and there was really no fundamental change to warrant such a considerable move in the markets. In a nutshell, keep control of your emotions when it comes to investing. Anybody that panicked at the end of last year and sold their investments left a lot of money on the table. I hope that this has been helpful.
These are some of the most important decisions that you make in your lifetime.
Don’t make them alone. Consider working with a fiduciary.

Tips for Stay at Home Parents Who Desire to Return to Work By Kristin Shopp, Resident since 2014
A
re you a stay at home parent considering a move back to work? Have you been frozen by your fear of failure, or have you been applying for dozens of jobs with no other action? Most parents say that starting a job search after being home with the children for a period of years is a real struggle. Stay at home parents face diminished self-confidence in their abilities and feelings of guilt about putting their children into day-care. Many feel that they have not kept up with the latest trends in their field, and most have do not have an updated resume. Add to this the very real bias that occurs on behalf of the employer against parents who have had a career gap to stay home with their children and it can feel that the dice are really stacked against them. This bias was noted in a study in the Harvard Business Review, where employers were half as likely to interview applicants who were stay at home parents compared to those who had been laid off for the same period of time.
Research resumes online and select an updated resume format that is suitable for your field. There are many online resources and examples. Include your volunteer work if applicable. 3. Create a spreadsheet and use it to list your network contacts, jobs you have applied for, and meetings you have had with contacts or employers. 4. Update your LinkedIn profile with the same information as your resume. Participate in Linkedin’s networking groups and frequently post on your profile. 5. Prepare your elevator pitch- a short speech up to 30 seconds that tells an employer or someone else who you are, what you have been doing, what you are looking for, and what you have to offer. This pitch can be used with modifications for your cover letters when needed.
The stay at home parent needs to utilize the same methods as any other effective job seeker does in their search, but in order to overcome the employer bias and create the maximum number of opportunities they must spend twice as much time on their job search! This penalty for a career gap may not seem fair but it is the reality, and achieving your goal requires that much more focus and commitment in your approach:
6. Have conversations with recruiters in your field so they can be looking for positions on your behalf.
1. Network! Networking is the most important part of a job search-it is estimated that 85% of jobs are found through networking. Take the time to rekindle relationships with your previous employers, and friends, and notify them of your job search. Review your network of friends and parents at your school and in your community to see if they might be a valuable contact for you. Do not go with your hand outalways offer to help others as well.
8. Help overcome your interviewing fears and build your network by asking for informational interviews at employers of interest. The informational interview is a lower pressure way to have a conversation with a potential employer and gain information that will facilitate your understanding of what the employer is looking for in an employee.
2. Update your resume. Consider working with a resume coach as they can help you to sell your best accomplishments.

The time you have spent at home with your children is priceless, and despite what you might think, you have been building skills during this time that are desired by employers. The road back to employment will likely be a bit longer and bumpier than you like, but if you stay focused, you WILL achieve your goal! Kristin Shopp has twenty years of experience in the career field as a recruiter, career coach, and talent acquisition manager. She is currently a stay at home parent for her children at Walnut Acres Elementary.
7. Build your skills by taking classes in your field that will bring you up to speed on the latest jargon or technology. These will build your confidence and will allow the business lingo to flow in your speech more naturally.
9. To ease the transition into work, you may consider contract or part-time roles. Sites like Flexjobs and Upwork have many home-based contract opportunities, and the Mom Project NORTHGATE LIVING 15
