the Carrolls: Laying Down Roots Meet
By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991; Wedding photos by Amy Jordon Photography.
The Carrolls are a young family of four eager to become part of this community and build a life in the neighborhood they hand-picked while living in SF and researching suburbs in Marin, Alameda, and Contra Costa counties. Remy says, “We like to say we bought the worst house in the best neighborhood. It had termites, rats, asbestos and a pool that hadn’t been used in 15 years.” After a 5-month renovation, it became their dream home. Cody adds, “People who grew up here may not realize that Walnut Creek is one of the best cities in the country.” Cody and Remy especially love the walkability, the neighborhood feel, the weather, accessibility to nature and BART, and the impressive downtown.
Remy grew up in Boston, attended Penn State, and moved to New York City to start her career in an experiential sports marketing agency. They produced high profile global events for big brands like Oprah, Oracle, Ben & Jerry’s and Square. When her agency sent her to San Francisco in 2015 to help produce Super Bowl City for the 50th Superbowl, she quickly realized she would never go back to the East Coast.
She met Cody at a mutual friend’s birthday party that included wine tasting in Sonoma. Cody, who grew up in Prescott, Arizona and went to Arizona State University, was living at the beach in Orange County at the time. (They are big college football fans!) What started out as a longdistance relationship eventually became a “no distance relationship,” as Remy says because Cody moved in with her in December 2019, just before the covid pandemic and the world shut down. Cody’s
career has always been with commercial insurance brokers. At the time he switched jobs to work for Woodruff Sawyer in San Francisco, which is now owned by Gallagher. They became a Covid success story. They were engaged and married in an intimate pandemic wedding in August 2021 at Cline in Sonoma, as a nod to where they first met.
In late 2019 Remy changed careers and moved into residential real estate, just months before all global events shut down completely. She started with a top team in San Francisco, then when they moved to Walnut Creek, she worked on Lamorinda’s top team, the Dana Green Team. After helping hundreds of buyers and sellers over the years, she recently launched her own business and is excited to serve her neighbors directly.
The Carrolls have two daughters, Sadie, who is 4, and Penelope, who is 11 months old. Sadie attends KLA preschool in the Shadelands and will start at Little Acres in the TK program, part of Walnut Acres Children’s Center, in August. She loves gymnastics, arts and crafts, and books. For her birthday in June, they hosted a pool party with her entire KLA class.
Penelope is the “happiest, easiest baby,” says Cody. She wants to do whatever big sister Sadie is doing and is obsessed with the pool. They have plans to join Scottsdale Swim Team next year.
Remy and Cody love Walnut Creek so much that they convinced her parents and Cody’s mom to relocate here, and the girls are now lucky to have all of their grandparents nearby.
The Carrolls enjoy exploring the best hikes and adventures around the Bay Area and recently went camping with four families and eight little ones under 4. They love hosting parties and sharing their pool and their love of homemade ice cream. Remy is an ice cream afficionado who was lucky enough to return to Penn State a few years ago for their famous weekend-long ice cream course. Their family’s favorite flavor is Fresh Mint Chip, made with the mint that overflows in their garden. In order to get to know their neighbors better, the Carrolls hosted their first annual Lomond Lane Luau in late May, complete with leis and a slushie machine.
They would love to meet other families who are beginning Little Acres TK in August. They plan to bring some ice cream to share to the Walnut Acres
Others provided by Carroll family.

playground on Sunday, August 2nd at 4PM. Pass on the word if you know any soon-to-be Little Acres TKers or feel free to text Remy directly: 925.786.4623.
Remy and Cody are happy to be laying down roots and tending to them,

both in their garden with the vegetables, herbs and fruit trees they’ve planted, as well as building bonds with the neighborhood. Cody adds, “We’re excited to be part of the next generation of families building roots here in Northgate.”

The Remodel Regret We Hear Too Often: “We Should Have Called You First”
By Gordon Reese, Gordon Reese Design Build, Resident since 2008

After more than 42 years as a local company—and over 50 years in the remodeling industry—there’s one phrase that still tugs at the heart: “We should have called you first.”
It rarely comes at the start of a project. More often, it arrives after budgets balloon, timelines stretch, and the dream remodel feels more stressful than restorative. In the East Bay, where homes are often cherished family sanctuaries passed down through generations or carefully updated for modern living, these disappointments hit especially hard. The good news? Most of these heartaches are preventable with the right approach from the beginning.
Remodeling isn’t inherently difficult because of construction. It becomes overwhelming when homeowners must make hundreds of decisions about layouts, finishes, budgets, permits, and priorities—often without clear guidance or realistic expectations.
Expert Tips: 3 Common
Remodeling Pitfalls to Avoid
• Designing First, Budgeting Later Many homeowners begin with beautiful renderings and vague cost ranges. Months of choices follow on cabinets,
fixtures, lighting, flooring, and more. When final pricing arrives, the project can cost 50–100% more than expected. Establishing a realistic investment range upfront, then designing thoughtfully within it, prevents painful later revisions and keeps the focus on what matters most to your family.
• Choosing a Contractor Primarily on Price A dramatically low bid can feel like a win—until change orders and surprises erode the savings. Remodeling isn’t a commodity. The lowest number often signals incomplete scope or future extras. Doing it right the first time protects your home’s equity and delivers better long-term value through quality materials and energy-efficient choices that serve you well for decades in our local climate.
• Making Big Decisions During Construction Construction is not the time to finalize cabinet layouts, tile selections, or lighting plans. This isn’t a homeowner failing—it’s a common flaw in the traditional remodeling process, which often pushes major design decisions into the build phase. As a result, many homeowners find
themselves making these important choices on the fly while crews wait and costs climb, creating unnecessary stress, delays, and expensive revisions.
The difference between a stressful remodel and a smooth one usually comes down to process. Leading design-build teams integrate design, estimating, and selections from the start. Clients can validate choices against both their vision and their budget throughout—often with the help of advanced 3D visualization and immersive virtual walkthroughs that let them truly experience the proposed changes before any construction begins. By the time construction starts, the scope is clear, selections are complete, and major surprises are minimized. This allows the build phase to focus on quality craftsmanship and execution rather than ongoing decisionmaking, turning the entire project into the enjoyable transformation it should be.
Over the years, we’ve learned we’re not the right fit for every homeowner. Some prioritize the absolute lowest price. Others seek a collaborative, transparent process that delivers price certainty and peace of mind. That distinction matters—because the goal isn’t just finishing a project. It’s creating a home you love for years to come, one that truly feels like a sanctuary for family gatherings, quiet mornings, and everyday life in Northgate and Walnut Creek.
If you’re a Northgate or Walnut Creek homeowner considering a kitchen remodel, bathroom update, addition, ADU, outdoor living space, or whole-home refresh, the best first step might simply be an informed conversation with an experienced team.
You are invited to join our next virtual Remodeling Seminar to learn practical strategies for a smoother process, or schedule a no-pressure consultation at GordonReese.com.
Your home deserves to feel like a sanctuary—not a source of regret. Starting with the right guidance makes all the difference.

Broncos Make History Twice in One Day
Compiled by Tyler Rosecrans, Zack Torrey and Kara Navolio

May 30, 2026 was an absolutely LEGENDARY day for Northgate High School. On the same afternoon, both the baseball and softball teams walked off the field as NCS Champions. Let’s break down the glory:
Baseball made HISTORY. Coach Lou Cesario’s squad put together a season for the record books, bulldozing through local competition all year, and then went out and shut out Alameda 4-0 in the championship game. The FIRST NCS title in school history — nobody can ever take that away. Coach Cesario said, “This was a very tight group with internal leadership and chemistry. They were fun to coach. They worked hard and were great teammates. I couldn’t be more proud of our group this year.” The team advances to the NorCal region championships.
Softball - Running a DYNASTY. Ashley Herman stepped onto that mound and was simply untouchable — a complete no-hitter, with 15 strikeouts, against Foothill in a 2-0 championship win. Back. To. Back. NCS titles. That’s not a fluke; that’s dominance.
Coach Tom Herman said, “Our softball team this year was lead by a strong senior class. We had 6 total seniors and 4 seniors that all started all 4 years for Northgate. They have elevated our program to a different level. Over that last 4 years our seniors helped us achieve 2 DAL league championships and 2 NCS titles. They are all legends in our softball program.” Softball also advances to the NorCal region championships. Follow updates on Instagram at @northgate.athletics.
Two teams. Two shutouts. One unforgettable Saturday. The Broncos didn’t just win — they made history twice in the same day.

My 5 Favorite Napa Wineries to Visit
By Lisa Crossett, Resident since 2001
Napa Valley remains one of the world’s premier wine destinations, offering a perfect blend of stunning landscapes, world-class wines, and memorable experiences. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a curious newcomer, these five wineries are among my favorites — Handwritten Wines, Odette Estate, B Cellars, Louis M. Martini, and Priest Ranch — each delivering distinctive character, exceptional quality, and thoughtful hospitality.
Handwritten Wines (Yountville)
Handwritten focuses on small-production, hillside and mountain Cabernet Sauvignons sourced from micro-lots across Napa Valley appellations like Mt. Veeder, Howell Mountain, Stags Leap, and more. Their winemaking emphasizes gentle handling to coax out authentic terroir-driven flavors. The Bread & Butter Tasting is a standout. It features six prestigious Cabernets poured side-by-side for comparison, paired with fresh bread from Bouchon Bakery, artisan butters (Danish Lurpak, Italian Delitia, French Isigny Sainte-Mère), Spanish-inspired Jamón, and cheese. It’s a luxurious, sensory exploration of Napa’s diversity. Regarding the best wines, all of the red wines were supreme. Your host will share a helpful map where their delicious Cabernet Sauvignons from the various districts—look for brooding, dark fruit expressions from mountain sites and more elegant, earthy ones from valley floors. The built-in charcuterie and bread shine with the Cabs. At home, try with aged cheeses, prosciutto, or grilled steak. Tip: Book ahead (appointments required). Perfect for comparative tasting enthusiasts.
Odette Estate Winery (Stags Leap District)
Located in the historic Stags Leap District—Cabernet heartland— Odette produces elegant, balanced wines with a focus on sustainability (LEED Gold Certified). The modern estate integrates beautifully with the vineyard landscape. Enjoy the relaxed, intimate setting along with the tour of the production facility. Their Passport Experience offers a great way to explore the PlumpJack Collection. Best wines: Odette Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon – Flagship with power and finesse (“iron fist in a velvet glove”), Reserve Chardonnay, Adaptation Cabernet Sauvignon.
B Cellars (Oakville)
B Cellars excels in exceptional blends and single-vineyard wines from premier Napa sites. Their Oakville estate features a state-of-theart facility, caves, and an interactive open-hearth kitchen for elevated food-and-wine experiences. The life like statues that are sprinkled throughout the property make for great selfies. Don’t miss the seasonal tasting menus – you will be in a foodie paradise. Best wines: Blend 23 and Blend 25 (proprietary blends),Stagecoach Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Brown Ranch Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
Louis M. Martini Winery (St. Helena)
A historic icon (over 90 years), Louis M. Martini pioneered quality Cabernet in Napa. Their newly restored winery honors tradition while evolving toward classic, lively styles. We have been members for several years and go up often to enjoy the food and wine pairing experience. We are never disappointed. The service, ambiance and remarkable wine is incredibly memorable. Best wines: The Gryphon – A return to classic Napa Cabernet with energy and table-friendliness. Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon – Blackcurrant, cedar, elegant structure.
Priest Ranch Winery (Yountville Tasting Room)
Rooted in a historic 1869 property (now part of a large estate with diverse vineyards), Priest Ranch offers uncommon varietals in a welcoming

downtown Yountville setting. Many wines are tasting-room exclusives. You must try the bacon tasting. There are four flavored bacons to enjoy with the divine cabernet sauvignons. Best wines: James Joshua and Cabernet Sauvignon (flagships), Snake Oil, Block 144 Petit Verdot, Remedy, Peacemaker.
General Wine Tasting Tips for Napa Valley
• Book in advance— Especially for popular experiences.
• Pace yourself— Use the spit bucket, drink water, and have a designated driver or use rideshares.
• Ask questions— Winemakers and staff love sharing stories.
• Dress comfortably— Layer for weather; wear closed-toe shoes for any vineyard walks.
• Focus on the experience— Taste mindfully: look, swirl, smell, sip, and note what you enjoy.
• Bring a cooler — Especially on warm days, it will keep your wines at near perfect temps.
Napa’s magic lies in its diversity—one day you’re comparing hillside Cabs with bread and butter, the next savoring historic elegance or bold blends. These wineries showcase the best of the valley. Plan your visit, sip slowly, and create lasting memories.

Many of this year’s BSF recipients are first-generation college students balancing extraordinary responsibilities beyond rigorous academic schedules — contributing financially to their households, caring for younger siblings, serving as translators for family members, and dedicating hundreds of hours to community service while excelling in leadership roles, athletics, music, and academics. This year, BSF awarded eight $4,000 scholarships to:
• Lola Abdugapparov, Middle College High School Dual Enrollment Program with Contra Costa College- attending UC Berkeley-Sciences Po dual degree program studying Environmental Economics and Public Policy.
• Thania Duran Murillo, Pittsburg High School — attending California State University, East Bay to pursue a career in nursing.
• Isabela Flores Saldana, Pittsburg High School — attending University of California, Davis to study Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
• Yamileth Heraldez, Pittsburg High School — attending San Jose State University to pursue a career in Music Education.
• Lilli John-MonDragon, College Park High School College Now Dual Enrollment Program with Diablo Valley College — attending St. Mary’s College to study Communication and Media Production.
• Joanna Le, De Anza High School — attending University of California, Berkeley to study Early Childhood Education.
• Joyce Miao, California High School — attending University of California, Berkeley to study Engineering.
• Saira Trehan, Monte Vista High School — attending University of California, Santa Barbara to study Physics.
Thanks to the generosity of our community, BSF celebrated a major milestone this year, surpassing the half-million-dollar mark in scholarships awarded — investing more than $523,000 in the education of 127 young women since its founding.

The BSF Board also introduced the newly established Judy Slinger Memorial Scholarship, created in honor of former BSF President Judy Slinger, whose lifelong commitment to education and literacy impacted countless students and families. More than $43,000 was donated in Judy’s memory following her passing in 2025, helping to establish a lasting legacy through this annual scholarship. The inaugural Judy Slinger Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 was presented to Lilli JohnMonDragon for her focus on literacy and education.
As the luncheon concluded, current BSF President Klara Bleier thanked the donors, volunteers, and supporters whose generosity continues to transform lives. “Behind every scholar is a community that believes in them,” she said. “Let’s continue to be the reason someone says, ‘Because of YOU, I made it.’”
BSF welcomes volunteers, donors, and community members interested in supporting higher education opportunities for deserving young women throughout Contra Costa County. Fabulous Courses for Curious Minds: Discover Lifelong Learning at OLLI at Cal State East Bay
By Erin Saint-Hilaire

Foradults age 50 and better, learning doesn’t have to end with retirement. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Cal State East Bay offers opportunities to explore new subjects, meet new people, and stay intellectually engaged in a welcoming community of lifelong learners.
Funded by the Bernard Osher Foundation and Cal State East Bay, OLLI serves members throughout Alameda and Contra Costa counties through both in-person and online programming. Classes are held at the Cal State East Bay Concord Center on Ygnacio Valley Road, with many additional courses available via Zoom.
OLLI offers lectures, short courses, and field experiences covering topics in the sciences, social sciences, arts, humanities, history, literature, and current events. Courses are taught by Cal State East Bay emeritus faculty and other distinguished educators who bring expertise and enthusiasm to every session.
Unlike traditional college classes, OLLI courses are designed purely for the enjoyment of learning. There are no tests, grades, or homework assignments—just the opportunity to explore subjects that spark curiosity. Most courses meet once a week for two hours over three to five weeks, and many online classes are recorded for later viewing.
For Carolyn Sladnick, who joined OLLI three years ago after retiring, the experience has been both educational and rewarding.
“It’s been phenomenal! It’s so much fun! The teachers are knowledgeable, and I always get something out of lectures. In every
single class, I walk away with something I didn’t know. All kinds of ‘aha!’ moments, and it just expands the horizon,” says Sladnick.
“I’ve enjoyed every class, and I’ve taken a huge variety of them. I even did ones I didn’t think I’d be interested in, and I still loved them. In OLLI, you’re here not because you have to, but because you want to, so it’s true learning.”
Beyond the classroom, OLLI offers a variety of special events and member-led interest groups that help foster connections among members. Threads of Wisdom, OLLI’s needleworking group, brings together members who enjoy knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and other fiber arts. Movie Monday offers film enthusiasts an opportunity to watch and discuss movies, while the OLLI Theater Group connects members through a shared appreciation of live performance.
These groups, along with field trips, lectures, and social gatherings, help create a vibrant community where members continue to learn, share experiences, and build lasting friendships.
An annual membership costs $60 and includes one free lecture each month. Free parking is available for those attending classes at the Concord Center.
For more information about courses, membership, and upcoming events, visit www.campusce.net/csueastbay, email olli@csueastbay. edu, or call 925-602-6776.
At OLLI, learning is only part of the experience. Members discover new interests, new friendships, and a community that celebrates curiosity at every stage of life.

Seafood Board
Summer is the time for seafood to shine, and this board is definitely the place where it will. Whether you’re right on the ocean beaching it or miles away in your backyard, you can enjoy the seafood sampler of your dreams.
Instead of traditional cured meats, this board features items like shrimp cocktail, smoked salmon, crab meat and even oysters, paired with crisp crackers, toasted baguette slices and light accompaniments such as lemon wedges, capers and herb-infused spreads. Veggies like tomatoes and peppers can provide more options for red, but other veggies like cauliflower and jicama can also be used for the white. feels both sophisticated and refreshing, bringing a taste of the seaside to any table.
When I think of seafood, I immediately think of all things nautical. The timeless, simple touches of the nautical theme are the perfect way to add detail and decoration without overcrowd ing the board. The addition of seashells and driftwood, along with the subtle draping of fishing netting and sand across the board’s empty spaces, can completely elevate it visually. Remember that the seafood is the star of the board!
