Now in its 14th year, One City, One Book invites the community to read a single book – in this case, The Library Book – and then come together for an array of intriguing programs and fun activities that connect to the theme of the book throughout September and October.
Wednesday, September 18, 2019 Fire Investigations, Fire Behavior, and Arson Walnut Creek Library, Oak View Room | 7:00 – 8:30PM
The process of establishing the origin and cause of fires utilizing current methods and techniques has become a science-based and technical discipline used by public and private fire investigators world-wide. The presentation from Captain George Laing will present an overview of the process used to investigate fires, especially criminal fires, by the Fire Investigation Unit of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, and examine the challenges from the 1986 LA Library Fire.

Senior Librarian Jason Gibbs shares about his personal experience saving books at the San Francisco Public Library in the aftermath of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Having served as a librarian for over 30 years, Gibbs will discuss the role of librarians and why libraries remain an essential part of the community.
