Erectile Dysfunction – Beyond the Blue Pill?

E

rectile dysfunction (male impotence) is the inability to get or keep an erection firm enough to engage in intimacy. One source has noted that up to 30 million men presently suffer from erectile dysfunction.

There are many causes to erectile dysfunction that may signal further health problems. For instance, erectile dysfunction may be a harbinger for coronary artery disease, which can lead to a heart attack. It may also indicate a sugar problem such as diabetes. The complicated mechanisms of erection also involve nerve inputs that could be severely compromised by such factors as high stress or smoking. Finally, as an example, low testosterone states have been linked to erectile dysfunction. Therefore, before initiating any therapy, it is important to speak to your doctor to get a thorough medical history and exam and lab work, so reversible medical causes of erectile dysfunction can be addressed. With that being said, the PDE5 inhibitor class of medications which started with sildenafil (Viagra) in the United States revolutionized the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

Prior to PDE5 inhibitor class of medication, there were not many effective oral therapies for impotence. Most of the therapies involved cumbersome and physically altering treatments such as penile injections, vacuum devices, penile implants, etc. There are now four (4) FDA approved PDE5 inhibitors on the market. They all work on the same mechanism of action -- enhancing the effects of nitric oxide on smooth muscle relaxation for firmer erections. However, the need to take product in anticipation of intimacy as well as side effects, precautions and occasionally ineffectiveness has diminished some of the allure to this class of medicines.

Newer therapies are starting to emerge that may reduce or remove the need for the “blue pill.” One that has been popularized by Dr. Charles Runels and termed the “P-shot” or Priapus shot involves the use of autologous blood components that are harnessed and inputted directly into the penile tissue. Another more recent advancement involves the use of high intensity electromagnetic field to strengthen the musculature of the pelvic floor to help with erections. Please contact the Medical Institute of Healthy Aging to learn about these and other newer options for erectile dysfunction.

Meet the Gomez Family: Rooted in Northgate

I

t is not uncommon to find Northgate residents who, like Jon Gomez, grew up in the neighborhood and have returned to raise their own family here.

Jon moved to the neighborhood as a Walnut Acres first grader. He and his two brothers attended the neighborhood schools, played in their backyard tree house, grew up and moved out of Walnut Creek. The 2000 graduate of Northgate High School attended San Francisco State University, preparing for a career in law with a degree in Criminal Justice. After college, he took the summer off to work in a bike shop in Sausalito. As life often does, this “fun break” led Jon on a new path. It turned into a 10-year career in the bicycle industry. Eventually he turned his love of selling bikes into a love for selling homes and is now part of Climb Real Estate, a boutique brokerage that is housed in a converted cottage on N. California St. Jon met Tyler through friends in college. He had a circle of friends who came from Sacramento where Tyler grew up. The two crossed paths a few times through these mutual friends. But it was years later, when Jon started living with some close friends of Tyler’s, that the two really connected. They were married in 2009.

Tyler worked in restaurants all through her teen years and after high school was managing restaurants in Sacramento. After trying out some other career paths, Tyler found her passion as a hairstylist. She thrived at a salon in Oakland for six years; and then two years ago opened her own salon in Walnut Creek, Hearten Salon.

Although Jon never imagined returning to the neighborhood he grew up in, when he and Tyler were searching for a place to raise their two daughters they were drawn back to Jon’s childhood home. It worked out since his parents were also looking to move to a smaller home. “We sold our house in Oakland and took the chance to move in to my childhood home as a way of dipping our toes in suburb life,

something we still weren’t sure was for us. Turns out “suburban life” is AMAZING, and we could not be more thrilled with the day to day lifestyle this neighborhood offers us. We love the feel of the wide tree lined streets filled with beautiful homes, the network of trails, the parks, and how close we are to twelve years of fantastic schools. Add to this equation all of the amenities available within a couple of stop lights from home: all of the food and beverage choices and shopping options,” says Jon. Milo, their oldest daughter who proudly states her age as 8 and a half, attends Walnut Acres just as Jon did. Milo’s 2nd grade teacher was also a Northgate High School grad. Jon loves running into people he knew growing up, who have also decided to return to the neighborhood. Milo is now in 3rd grade. After trying out T-ball, soccer and basketball, she has found a love of gymnastics and takes classes at Encore. She also enjoys performing in theater, crafting, baking, riding her bike and swimming.

Their youngest daughter, 4-year-old Frankie, attends a play school in the Diablo Shadows neighborhood lovingly run by another Northgate alum. Jon says, “Chances are you have seen a woman pushing a fiveseated stroller on Oak Grove on the way to the library or bagel shopthat’s the Mini Me Play and Learn crew!” For now, Frankie spends most of her time trying to keep up with her big sister.

Sprinkles, the cat, is the 5th member of the Gomez family, and Milo is planning on adding dogs in the future.

Summertime fun includes swimming in pools, rivers, and oceans and

doing flips off the diving board at Oak Grove Swim Club. They love Tahoe and Hawaiian vacations as well. In winter, they embrace snow sports like skiing, snowboarding, sledding and snow ball fights. Although Jon used to ride fast road bikes, he now cruises the neighborhood with the girls.

They also enjoy camping and meeting up with friends at Calicraft. Jon has recently taken up golf, enjoying our local course Boundary Oak. Tyler is involved with a local book club, enjoys spin classes and as Jon says, “teaches our girls to be brave and strong.” Both volunteer at Walnut Acres and cheer on the S.F. Giants and Golden State Warriors. But more than anything, the family enjoys spending time with friends and the large extended family they are blessed to have. “We have realized that so many of the families that have come to this special corner of Walnut Creek share many of the same passions and values as us, and are working hard to make the most of life while being kind and caring to those around them. We love that, with the age of our kids, we know that we will be part of this community for many years to come, and that many of our friends and neighbors will be doing the same. We love the network of families who can lean on each other for help, whether in a real emergency or a borrowed tool or missing ingredient. Even in just the five years we have been here we feel like we have really woven ourselves into the fabric of this community, and we are excited to see what the next fifteen years bring.”

A favorite story from the neighborhood that Jon enjoys telling is one of a new friend Milo made at school. It turned out that this friend was the niece of one of Jon’s childhood friends. Like Jon, the father of this girl has returned to Northgate to raise his kids in his childhood home. It was a special moment when he dropped off his daughter for a play date at the same house his parents had dropped him off at years ago.

Safely Re-Landscape Around Mature Trees

H

as your lawn seen better days? Is the turf not as thick and green as it used to be?

Does a more climate-friendly lawn appeal to you because of the amount of water you currently use? Perhaps you’re considering replacing it with drought-tolerant plants or even better, decorative mulch to eliminate the need for water altogether. Whatever you do for whatever reason, we at Traverso Tree Service urge you to consider the affects re-landscaping will have on your beloved mature trees already growing in your yard.

Here are some important facts about trees that you should know before starting your re-landscaping project: FACT 1. Trees adapt to the environment they are planted in.

When a tree is planted, it often grows a dependency on the amount of water it receives. If it is planted in or next to a lawn, the tree is going to take advantage of the watering that is being applied to the lawn. If the lawn is being watered three times a week for 10 minutes at a time, the tree is going to adapt to that watering pattern and depend on it for its survival. Therefore, eliminating the lawn and that source of water could have a profound effect on the health of your tree whether its species is considered droughtresistant or not.

FACT 2. Roots are aqua-tropic; they are designed to seek out water. Trees will propel their roots as close to a water source as possible. It is not uncommon to have a lawn eventually be completely full of tree roots. This is a critical consideration because if you are thinking of completely replacing the lawn, which may require

rototilling of the soil and re-trenching for a new sprinkler system, you are in danger of destroying a significant number of roots on your mature tree and therefore, destroying a substantial source of water for the tree.

Here is the good news!

You can update your aging landscape. We recommend you have an arborist to visit your site while you’re in the design phase to determine:

FACT 3. A recipe for disaster: turning off the sprinkler system during construction.

Imagine you’re a tree. You just had a bunch of your absorption roots cut off due to rototilling and trenching activities. To add insult to injury, that irrigation system you’ve always counted on has been turned off, and in the middle of the hot summer months no less! This is a dangerous scenario that could lead to a potential decline or even death of your mature tree.

- Whether your mature trees are worthy of retention. To begin with, there is no sense preserving trees that are not performing well. Construction projects are harsh on trees. The arborist can point out which trees are vigorous enough to withstand the abuse.

rom El Cerrito to Crockett, over to Oakley and Brentwood, and then down to San Ramon, all the libraries that make up the Contra Costa County Library make up one single collection of resources. Except for certain non-circulating collections, we can have any of our books, DVDs, magazines, and CDs sent to your most convenient library for you to pick up. It gets better, though.

We know that there isn’t a library out there that has everything that their patrons are going to want. To better serve our communities, many libraries and library systems up and down the West Coast are participating in a collaborative project known as Link+! What that means is that if the Contra Costa County Library doesn’t have what you want, there is a good chance that we can get it. The libraries that make up Link+ include other major library public library systems like San Diego, Sacramento, and San Francisco. Link+ also includes research institutions like Santa Clara University, Saint Mary’s College of California, and Loyola Marymount University. If after searching the Contra Costa County Library catalog (https://catalog. ccclib.org) for a book you would like to read, it turns out that we can’t provide it, look for the “Search Link+” link at the bottom left corner of the webpage and search the collections of over 70 library systems and have the book you want sent to the Contra Costa County Library of your choice.

And while we’re talking about library services, with school starting up again, please don’t forget that the Contra Costa County Library gives access to a wide variety of academically helpful electronic resources. Through our subscription to the family of Explora databases, we have research resources for our grade school, middle school, and high school (and beyond) patrons. Through our subscription to LearningExpress, our patrons can access test preparation for the important SAT, ACT, AP tests and more. And through our subscription to Brainfuse, our patrons are connected to free tutoring on all subjects, at all levels. There are plenty of other electronic resources available, too, including language learning through Rosetta Stone, streaming movies through Kanopy, and access to the electronic version of many popular magazines through Flipster. here’s lots of reasons to love summer squash.

Wow, just the nutritional value alone makes this veggie worth every bite. Zucchini is a favorite among low-carb dieters and anyone who wants to drop some weight. Zucchini has a very low score on the glycemic index. They also have high water content, low in calories, carbs, and minimal sugar. High in potassium, magnesium, and antioxidants. Zucchini squash, both yellow and green, have therapeutic compounds.

This makes a wonderful, very tasty vegetable, so easy and convenient to prepare. I really appreciate simple, tasty, and healthy food. I like this zip dish - ready in under 10 minutes.

2 medium size zucchinis (washed well), slice to a near ¼ to ½ inch.

2 tablespoons butter 1 small sweet onion, diced 8 fresh cherry tomatoes, sliced in half 1 teaspoon fresh or dried Italian seasoning Salt to taste

Using a medium nonstick skillet, pump up the stovetop burner. Add 2 tablespoons butter. Melt and brown. Carefully add zucchini and stir for about three minutes.

They should be nicely browned. Add fresh tomato, diced onion, sprinkle with Italian Seasoning, and lightly salt. You’ll have to watch closely, as they crisp-up quickly.

Recipe takes about 5 to 6 minutes to make.

Angels For Minis -

Miniature Horse Rescue Needs Volunteers

I

ntroduce anyone to a horse in a tiny package and you will hear a chorus of “aw..so cute!” Indeed, miniature horses are sweet, affectionate and downright adorable. But, what happens when these very special creatures are mistreated, neglected or have outlived their human family? The lucky ones find their way to Angels for Minis.

Nestled at the base of Mount Diablo, Angels for Minis, founded in 2013, is a non-profit sanctuary dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption of miniature horses. Home to approximately 24 minis at any given time, Angels for Minis rescues these unique animals and provides them with shelter, food, veterinary care and lots of love. The horses, who come from all around the western U.S., are referred to AFM by humane societies, animal control officers, and the tips from concerned parties who become aware of an abandoned horse. We are one of very few miniature horse rescue facilities in the country.

Although everyone who meets a mini is immediately enamored, few people know much about the tiny horse. Originally enjoyed as palatial pets, the miniature horse was specifically bred by the Fallabella family in Argentina. These horses found a role in this country as mine workers, pulling the miners’ carts. Often misunderstood to be a type of pony (which is much larger), miniature horses cannot be ridden. In contemporary society the diminutive horses are most frequently companion animals. They can be seen in the show rings demonstrating their jumping prowess and cart pulling skills. They can be trained as (riderless) therapy or guide animals and you may even find one to calm your nerves at the airport!

Those horses rescued at Angels for Minis require a great deal of attention. Some horses come to AFM fully wild; others have never experienced human touch; some have been starved. Some require special feed. Others come needing wound care or medication. A dedicated corps of committed volunteers provides day to day care, socialization and patient training. Although tiny, minis need the same maintenance care as do their larger counterparts. In addition to basic environmental care and nutrition, the minis need veterinary and dental care. While they do not wear horseshoes, minis do require periodic visits and hoof trimming from the farrier. The average expense per horse after an initial veterinary visit is $350-$1050. With the help of sponsors and those who can donate their services we are able to provide those we rescue with proper veterinary treatment, feed and whatever necessary care they may require for successful rehabilitation.

Angels for Minis is seeking to add to its dedicated corps of regular volunteers. Angels for Minis depends on volunteer work parties from corporations, local businesses and affinity groups. Work parties build, paint, and assist with a variety of essential major projects.

Angels for Minis relies solely on donations and public contributions to transport and care for the rescued horses. The goal for every horse is a new “forever home.” In the five years since Angels for Minis was founded, more than 410 horses have been placed with new families.

T

he Las Trampas Hills towering over Danville were once haunted. Or rather, they were inhabited for several years

by Eugene O’Neill, the “haunted poet” of the American theatre.

O’Neill lived from 1937 to 1944 with his wife Carlotta at Tao House, now the Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site, managed by the National Park Service in partnership with the Danvillebased Eugene O’Neill Foundation.

This year marks the 20th Eugene O’Neill Festival, put on by the foundation. And the theme of this year’s Festival is “Haunted Poets.” But O’Neill was not the only haunted poet. (More on another in just a bit.)

O’Neill was a member of a family that did not put the “fun” in dysfunctional. The playwright had major artistic differences with his father, James, an Irish immigrant actor who made a name for himself in stock melodramas. His son, on the other hand, wanted to create plays that broke the melodrama mold and explored, in a contemporary vernacular, the inner recesses and hidden passions and desires of his characters.

And there were plenty of both in his family. Eugene blamed his father for an itinerant life necessitated by constant moving around while James was on tour and for the impact this had on the family. His brother, Jamie, drank himself to death at age 45 (O’Neill himself had a fondness for the bottle in his early years).

And his mother was a morphine addict (see above).

Finally, in 1941, O’Neill exorcised some of his family demons by writing his greatest work, the semi-autobiographical Long Day’s Journey Into Night, in which the Tyrone family stands in for the O’Neills. He composed this masterpiece in his study at Tao House. Journey headlines this year’s festival and will be presented Sept. 14–29 in the Old Barn, just a few steps from the playwright’s one-time residence.

Another Haunted Poet Tennessee Williams’s The Glass Menagerie (presented Aug. 30–Sept. 15 at the Village Theatre) parallels Journey in several respects. Menagerie’s Amanda Wingfield is not a drug addict, but she is a faded “southern belle” trapped in the past and unable to cope with the mentally fragile state of her daughter, Laura.

Both are financially dependent on Laura’s brother, Tom. This young man longs to be a poet but feels burdened and hemmed in by family obligations. His greatest desire is to escape this stifling environment.

Williams coined the term “memory play” to describe Menagerie, which—along with Journey—was written in the early 1940s.

O’Neill’s masterwork could be described as a memory play,

bringing to light as it does long-buried and painful family memories.

Photo by John Carter. in Journey, Cathleen, becomes the main character in a Downton Abbey–like drama, titled The Second Girl (presented Aug. 24–25 at the Museum of the San Ramon Valley), that imagines observations of a Tyrone-family servant, a recent Irish immigrant. This follow-on to Journey was written

by Ronan Noone—originally from Ireland—and now living in Boston. And it rounds out the “trifecta” of plays presented at the 20th Annual Eugene O’Neill Festival. The Festival started on August 24 and features several other events through September.

Danville Is Alive with the Sound of Music Another Festival event of note is a Sept. 5 concert of airs and arias by noted Irish soprano Clodagh Kinsella, accompanied by Irish pianist Keith Stears. A graduate of the Royal Irish Academy of Music, with first class honors in Vocal Studies, Kinsella is also a multi-instrumentalist, starting on violin at age 5 and piano at age 8, who will sing Irish favorites such as Danny Boy, The Kerry Dance, The Tinker’s Daughter, and The Leprechaun, and home favorites Shenandoah and America the Beautiful.. Stears has received numerous prizes and awards, including the coveted Lucien and Maura Teissier Scholarship Award, a competition of pianists studying at the RIAM. The concert is presented at the Village Theatre.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk will be held on October 6 Submitted by Anh Nguyen, American Cancer Society

T

he American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) of Walnut Creek walk will be held on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at Heather Farm Park to unite communities, honor those touched by the disease and raise awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, with more than 1 million passionate participants supporting the noncompetitive three- to five-mile walks each year. Registration for this 5K walk begins at 7:30 am, with opening program begins at 8:30 am and the walk is set to start at 9:00 am.

Since 1993, more than 14 million supporters have raised more than $870 million nationwide. Last year, 2,500 walkers in Walnut Creek and neighboring communities helped raise more than $97,000. Over 100 survivors received event t-shirts and gift bags upon checking in and lead the walk at the start line.

Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society fund innovative breast cancer research; provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk; and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most.

In 2017, ACS staff helped guide more than 40,000 cancer patients through every step of their journey as they moved through the health care system, including helping with insurance problems, referring them to ACS and other local services, assisting caregivers and addressing obstacles to care. In 2018, the ACS Western Region received a generous donation of new wigs. Each of the 95 Western Region wig banks-including the Walnut Creek ACS Office and the ACS Wig Services at Stanford Health Care – ValleyCare Resource Center in Pleasanton-received approximately 300 wigs to pass along to cancer patients. As of March 2019, ACS is currently funding more than $64.3 million breast cancer research grants and plays a part in many of the scientific advances against breast cancer, including funding early work that eventually lead to the development of lifesaving therapies like tamoxifen and Herceptin.

“By taking what we’ve learned through research and translating it into action, we’ve contributed to a 26 percent decrease in the overall US cancer death rate since 1991,” said Anh Nguyen, Community Development Manager in the Walnut Creek office of the American Cancer Society (ACS). “That means that we helped avoid nearly 2.4 million cancer deaths during that time.”
