Buccine Family: Meet the
Jumping into Northgate and discovering community and connection
By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991 | Photos provided by Buccine Family
Paige and Chad Buccine came to California from Maryland, where they both grew up in suburbs of Washington DC. They and their four children have jumped right into the Northgate community with a splash, joining Scottsdale Swim Club and building new friendships.
Their story began in college. Although they grew up close to each other, they did not meet until college. They both attended the University of Maryland. It took Chad two years to muster the courage to ask Paige out on a date. The first time she said, “no,” but he persisted. They dated for four years and married in 2011 in Maryland. Chad got his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering; Paige got hers in American Studies. They moved to California in 2009 for Chad’s first job as a solar engineer with BP Solar. Chad later attended UC Berkeley for his MBA. Paige got her California teaching credential and became a teacher.
Later Chad founded a solar engineering firm called Jolt Engineering. Jolt designs photovoltaic and energy storage on commercial properties across the country. Paige says, “He feels very lucky to have found a career that both provides a service to the greater good of the planet/community and also provides well for his family.” Paige left the teaching profession to stay home with their four children. They lived on the west side of Walnut Creek until this past March when they found their dream home on Comistas Drive.
Giada is 10 and loves singing and performing. She played Dorothy in her school’s production of The Wizard of Oz. Briggs is 8 and loves chess and basketball. He even won the school’s chess tournament last school year. Giada and Briggs swam for Scottsdale this summer and play soccer for WC Surf. Sophia is 5 and recently celebrated with “Five is a Vibe” birthday party with a disc jockey and 70’s theme. She attended Northgate High School’s Bronco Cheer Camp and is a budding cheerleader. Allie is two and loves Bluey. The kids are now attending Walnut Acres and forging new friendships. They recently adopted a puppy named Bo, a labradoodle who adds a bit of chaos and energy to this lively family. “We are truly living our dreams,” adds Paige. “Living in the beautiful community, we have felt so very welcome. Our lives are certainly busy and often chaotic but filled with lots of joy and noise. We wouldn’t have it any other way.”
The Buccines also enjoy Tahoe several times per year, both in summer and winter. The kids are learning to ski. But their travels are not limited to California. They have a goal to visit another country each summer and learn about the culture and customs of each place they go. Their first international trip will be in June 2025 to Italy. Paige’s mother is Sicilian and has never been to visit where her family is from. “It’s such a blessing to be able to take her and have her share it with her grandchildren,” says Paige.
Paige reflects with gratitude, “I think my husband and I are very proud of how far our families have come and how hard

adds Paige.

SECRET TO SUCCESS
Marketing your business means focusing on how you solve customer problems and create a sense of progress. By demonstrating exactly how you alleviate both current and future customer problems, you’ll become trusted experts and build a loyal customer base. Here are a few ways to get started:
▶ UNDERSTANDING THE COMMUNITY
Local businesses have an advantage in understanding the specific challenges and pain points faced by their community members. By actively listening to customer feedback and engaging in conversations, businesses can identify the problems that matter most to residents. Addressing these problems through products, services, or even community initiatives can position your business as a valuable problem solver.
▶ WRITING HOW-TO CONTENT
You are the expert in your field, so what may be common knowledge to you is new information to your readers. Teach your audience something they might not even know they should be aware of. By breaking down complex problems into clear, actionable steps, you provide value for your readers and establish yourself as a knowledgeable source.
▶ BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH PERSONALIZED SERVICE
Knowing customers by name and going the extra mile to provide exceptional service creates a sense of loyalty and trust. A personalized approach is valued by consumers, with 80% of people being more likely to do business with a company that offers personalized experiences.1
▶ LEVERAGING COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
A commitment to the community is especially potent for small businesses. Collaboration is key for local businesses because it allows you to expand your reach and create positive goodwill in the community. They donate about 250% more than larger businesses to local nonprofits and community causes.2 Local partnerships demonstrate a commitment to building a stronger community.

Transform Your Space: Inspiring Home Remodeling Ideas for Every Room (Part 2)
By Gordon Reese, Gordon Reese Design Build, Resident since 2008
Welcome back to our exciting journey of home transformation. In Part 1, we explored inspiring remodeling ideas for the living room, kitchen, and bathroom. Now, let’s continue with ideas to refresh your bedroom, optimize your home office, and enhance outdoor living spaces.
Refresh Your Bedroom
Your bedroom should be a sanctuary of rest and relaxation. Start by selecting a soothing color palette that promotes calmness and tranquility. Shades of blue, green, or gray are known for their calming effects. Update the flooring with soft carpeting or hardwood floors paired with area rugs.
Invest in a quality mattress and stylish bedding to ensure comfort. A memory foam mattress and high-thread-count sheets can make a world of difference. Modernize your storage solutions with builtin closets or sleek dressers. Custom closet systems with adjustable shelves, hanging rods, and drawers can maximize storage and organization. Incorporate blackout curtains for better sleep, and add layers of lighting, such as bedside lamps, overhead fixtures, and accent lighting, to create the perfect ambiance.
Optimize Your Home Office
With more people working from home, having a functional and inspiring home office is essential. Start by selecting a quiet location with plenty of natural light. A room with a large window can help reduce eye strain and boost your mood.
Invest in ergonomic furniture, including a comfortable chair and a spacious desk. Ergonomic chairs with lumbar support and adjustable height can prevent back pain, while a large desk provides ample space for your computer, documents, and other work essentials.
Use shelving and storage solutions to keep the space organized and clutter-free. Wall-mounted shelves, filing cabinets, and desk organizers can help keep everything in its place. Add personal touches like artwork, plants, and decorative accessories to make the space feel inviting. A piece of art that inspires you or a plant

that adds a touch of greenery can make your office a more pleasant place to work.
Ensure your office is well-lit with a combination of task lighting and ambient light. A desk lamp with adjustable brightness and overhead lighting that illuminates the entire room can create a balanced lighting environment.
Enhance Outdoor Living Spaces
Don’t neglect your outdoor areas—they’re extensions of your home. Whether you have a small patio or a sprawling backyard, there are plenty of ways to make it more functional and inviting.
Consider adding a deck or patio with comfortable seating, a dining area, and a grill for outdoor entertaining. Composite decking is durable and low-maintenance, while outdoor furniture with weather-resistant cushions can withstand the elements.
Incorporate greenery with potted plants, garden beds, or even a vertical garden. Choose a mix of flowers, shrubs, and trees to create a lush, vibrant space. Add ambient lighting with string lights, lanterns, or built-in fixtures to create a cozy atmosphere for evening gatherings. Solar-powered lights are eco-friendly and easy to install.
Conclusion: Your Dream Home Awaits
Remodeling your home is a chance to infuse it with your unique style and improve its functionality. Each room offers opportunities for creative expression and practical enhancements. By focusing on modern design elements, high-quality materials, and thoughtful layouts, you can transform your space into a haven of comfort, style, and efficiency.
Gordon Reese Design Build is here to help you realize your remodeling goals, from design through construction, within an established investment range. With our expertise and commitment to excellence, we ensure your home transformation is smooth, successful, and perfectly aligned with your vision. Transform your space and rediscover the joy of living in a home that truly reflects who you are. Happy remodeling!
Joybound Dog Grooming Academy: Empowering Careers and Elevating Pet Care
By Chelsea Blackburn, Joybound
In July 2024, Joybound People & Pets launched the Engelstad Dog Grooming Academy, thanks to the generous support of the Engelstad Foundation. This academy, located on Joybound’s Walnut Creek campus, is more than just a grooming salon; it is a comprehensive career-training program designed to open doors for individuals facing barriers to employment.
Now fully operational, the Grooming Academy welcomes the public to bring their dogs—of all sizes, shapes, breeds, and ages—for quality grooming services. These include professional nail services, baths, brushing, and full styling, all provided by students in training under the close supervision of experienced instructors and groomers. What sets the academy apart is not only the quality of care offered, but the academy’s unique role as both a learning environment and a service provider.
The Academy’s program is rigorous and hands-on, consisting of a four-week, 150-hour curriculum. Students spend 25 percent of their time in the classroom, learning essential grooming techniques and industry knowledge, while 75 percent is devoted to practical, hands-on training with real pets. Upon completion, graduates are well-equipped to step into entry-level positions such as bather/brusher in grooming salons. The programs offered are foundational in the journey toward becoming professional, licensed groomers and pet stylists. Graduates can also pursue careers in a variety of settings, including doggy daycare centers, boarding facilities, and retail pet supply stores. With the pet care industry continuing to grow, there are many opportunities, and these in-demand jobs are abundant.
Joybound’s shelter dogs also play a key role in the academy, serving as the primary clients for students’ hands-on training. These dogs receive regular grooming, which is vital for their health and happiness as they prepare for adoption. In addition, Joybound staff and volunteers bring their own pets to the academy, giving students the chance to work with a diverse range of family pets and service dogs, further enhancing their practical experience.
“The vision behind Joybound Dog Grooming Academy was to create a vocational school that removes barriers to employment, providing free education and career guidance to those who need it most,” explained Bernadette (Bernie) Machado, Director of the Joybound Dog Grooming Academy. Machado, a seasoned expert in animal welfare with a successful dog grooming business in San Francisco since 1989, has brought her wealth of knowledge and passion to the academy. “We wanted to offer people a chance to find work they truly love, and that’s how the academy was born— an amazing partnership that combines our dedication to serving the community with the financial and expert resources necessary to bring this vision to life.”
The Joybound Dog Grooming Academy is not just about grooming pets; it is about preparing people for a future in the animal wellness sector. By providing accessible, high-quality training, Joybound is helping individuals turn their passion for animals into a viable and rewarding career. This initiative underscores Joybound’s commitment to fostering the human-animal bond and making a positive community impact that extends far beyond the walls of the grooming salon.
Whether you are looking to have your pet pampered or are seeking a new career in a growing industry, the Joybound Dog Grooming Academy is ready to welcome you. Join us in celebrating this new chapter of opportunity and service in our community!

Ladies' Lunch featuring late summer tomatoes
By Lisa Crossett, Resident since 2001
In the true spirit of *Northgate Living* magazine, I am beyond excited to share the delightful “Ladies Lunch” I recently hosted for the wonderful women on my court. With a strong sense of community among us, we’re always finding reasons to gather—whether it’s impromptu outside potluck with wine, progressive dinners through our homes, or simply sharing a bottle of wine. This time, I wanted to celebrate our connections with an intimate, multi-course lunch at my home, creating a special experience to welcome the weekend and celebrate the joys of summer.
The theme for our lunch was a “Tomato Tasting,” a tribute to the vibrant flavors of the summer season. We began with a delicate amuse-bouche: a deviled egg with tangy tomato jam and a confit tomato on brioche topped with whipped ricotta. From there, we savored a refreshing summer gazpacho, followed by a bright tomato salad paired with warm, melty goat cheese. For the main course, I served Italian meatballs simmered in homemade tomato sauce over a bed of creamy Parmesan polenta. And to top it all off, we indulged in a perfectly moist citrus olive oil cake—a sweet and subtle finale to our afternoon feast.
The tablescape was a true labor of love, inspired by a whimsical tablecloth I found at TJ Maxx, featuring branches and birds in soft, earthy tones. I layered the table with twig placemats and a butcher paper runner adorned with twigs, moss balls, faux birds, and bursts of fresh flowers to tie the outdoors into our dining experience. I always aim for my décor to complement the menu, creating a seamless, cohesive ambiance that engages all the senses.
It was such a joy to gather with these incredible women—neighbors who have become wonderful friends—and create lasting memories over delicious food and lively conversation. We are truly fortunate to live in this wonderful community and call Walnut Creek our home. Here’s to many more celebrations and shared moments! Cheers!
Citrus Scented Olive Oil Cake
Recipe from Tori Ritchie
½ C. Mild olive oil (not extra virgin)
1 C. Sugar
2 Eggs
Finely grated zest of 1 lemon and 1 orange
½ C. Dry Marsala
1 ¼ C. All-purpose flour
½ C. Finely ground cornmeal
2 t. Baking powder
1 t. Salt
2 to 3 grinds of fresh nutmeg
2 C. Shredded carrots (about 3 large)
Confectioner’s sugar for dusting

Heat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly coat an 8-inch round baking pan with olive oil and a dusting of flour. In a large bowl, whisk together the ½ cup olive oil, sugar, eggs, lemon and orange zest, and Marsala until well blended. (the sugar will not all dissolve)

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, sea salt, and nutmeg. Pour the flour mixture into the egg mixture, whisking all the while to avoid lumps. Using a silicon spatula or wooden spoon, mix in the shredded carrots. Scrape the batter into the prepared baking pan.
Bake for 35 minutes, or until the cake tester inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. Transfer the pan to a rack to cool for 20 to 30 minutes. Remove the cake from the pan and set it on the rack to cool to room temperature. Dust lightly with confectioner’s sugar right before serving. Makes one cake.
