Meet Lisa and Charles:

Living life to the fullest

Ablind

date turned into a happy marriage of over 20 years for these two Bay Area natives who love adventure, wine, food and entertaining. In fact, Lisa Crossett loves her entertaining hobby so much that she named her two “4-legged babies” after Martha Stewart. Marty and Stewart are 8-year-old Havanese siblings.

Lisa met Charles Kreling in 1997 when two sisters set them up. One sister worked with Lisa, and the other worked with Charles. Their first date was at a Walnut Creek brewery named The Fault Line, which is now the location of Sauced. By the 3rd date they knew they were destined to be married.

The food and wine loving pair were married, appropriately, at the winery Murrieta’s Well in Livermore in 1998. After living in San Mateo, they moved to the Diablo Shadows neighborhood in 2001. At that time seven new homes had been built on the land that was the prior home of the Ginocchio family estate and orchards. “We have

a great group of neighbors on our court,” says Lisa. “The majority are original homeowners, along with a couple of fantastic new additions. We have seen the kids go through grade school, high school and college, and now several have gotten married this past summer.”

Lisa and Charles love throwing dinner parties, making trips to Napa for wine tasting adventures or enjoying Shadowbrook Winery, which is just 4 minutes from home, just off Northgate Rd. Lisa adds, “I have an immense affinity for delicious food, great wine and entertaining. I published a food blog in 2009 called Authentic Suburban Gourmet

and am currently working on a lifelong dream of writing a cookbook.”

Lisa graduated from Cal State University, Hayward (now Cal State East Bay) with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration and has had a long successful career in the staffing and recruiting industry. She is currently Head of Talent Acquisition for Mechanics Bank with headquarters in Walnut Creek. She is also currently President of the board for California Recruiters and also volunteers her time locally as a board member on the Community Arts Foundation, which provides scholarships and advocacy for arts education.

Charles first started his college career at the College of San Mateo, earing a certificate in Commercial Pilot Technology. He then went to UC Berkeley and received his B.S. in Business Administration. He held various careers in accounting, finance, and IT. He now works for Central Garden and Pet where he is the head of Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance. But his main passion is flying. He takes Lisa and friends on day trips around California and has his own plane based at Concord’s Buchanan Field. Charles also volunteers his time. He is a volunteer deputy and pilot for the San Francisco Sherriff’s Dept. and was a past commander of the SF Sherriff’s Air Squadron. He also serves on Contra Costa County’s Merit Board overseeing the employment system for county employees and recently was appointed as a Walnut Creek Design Review Commissioner where he is currently Chair of the Commission.

With so many volunteer commitments and dinner parties to throw, it’s amazing they have time for travel. But one of their fondest memories allowed them to combine two of their passions: enjoying a gourmet four course meal and outstanding wines while flying at super sonic speed on one of the Concorde’s last flights to London.

This couple certainly lives by the motto: Enjoy every day and live life to the fullest. [Look for Lisa’s articles starting this month in Northgate Living magazine under the column Food, Wine and Entertaining!] Cheers!

ARF Helps Betty Heal

– Inside and Out

When officers from a municipal animal shelter just outside Redding, California first met Betty, she desperately needed help. The 3-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix had been neglected and was heavily pregnant, yet her soft tail wag indicated she knew she was safe now. Just a few days later, Betty gave birth to four puppies at that shelter’s facility. But while safer than having them on the street as a stray, crowded shelters put vulnerable, underage puppies at high risk for contracting life-threatening illnesses.

To protect the puppies, this shelter called Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation for help. ARF’s rescue team brought the entire family back for evaluation and placed them in a loving, volunteer foster home where the puppies could grow up strong

and healthy. Once old enough to be adopted, all of Betty’s puppies quickly found loving homes.

However, Betty needed extra time to find the right fit. She is very intelligent, loves to cuddle, and tires out quickly with a game of fetch, but when she first arrived, she pulled on her leash and overreacted on walks when she saw another dog. ARF’s expert behavior team immediately started dedicating time to training Betty using positive reinforcement techniques to improve her physical and behavioral health.

Paired with the consistent efforts of our wonderful foster volunteers, Betty has shown significant improvement and now enjoys walking with well-matched canine friends, in addition to the humane ones she’s always adored. She has come a long

way and is an excellent representation of dogs who need support and direction to learn how to enjoy life. Yet despite the great strides she’s made, Betty has been in ARF’s care for more than 365 days – and is still looking for a loving home.

Betty’s adoption includes a training package valued at over $500. The package includes several training items, like treats and food puzzles, plus four private consultations, up to one hour each, with ARF’s Behavior and Training team. Plus, her adoption fee has been prepaid by a generous donor!

If you know someone who may be interested in adopting this sweetheart, please have them reach out to ARF. We know the perfect home for Betty is out there. Can you help us find it?

Northgate community member returns as vice principal with great enthusiasm

With the start of school, new faces at Northgate High School include about 400 freshmen who make up the incoming class of 2026 and a new vice principal.

However, Vice Principal Tucker Farrar is far from new - he is actually a familiar face to many students and staff as he lives in the Northgate community and is returning to the school where he previously taught math starting in 2012 and served as the Dean of Students in the 20182019 year. When the Mt. Diablo Unified School District eliminated that position due to enrollment falling below 1,600 students, Farrar left to become an administrator at California High School in San Ramon for the past three years.

When Farrar learned last summer there was an administrative position at Northgate, he jumped at it, soon joining Principal Kelly Cooper and Vice Principal Tyler Rosecrans at the school that serves the community where he lives.

“Northgate has an ambiance around it, one that cannot be matched,” Farrar explained recently, about a month after the Aug. 11 start of school. “There are some tangibles that are very much real such as the rallies and the athletic spirit. There are intangibles such as the attitude of students and how students love being at the school. Teachers enjoy teaching, and there are many that have been at this school for many years. Ms. Cooper is doing a wonderful job as a school leader, and I knew that this is where I wanted to be.”

Farrar taught algebra and geometry during his previous tenure with the Broncos, and during his last few years, he also worked as a TOSA - a Teacher On Special Assignment. For half of the day, he dived into the equations of mathematics, and for the other part of the day, he helped teachers integrate technology into their classrooms. He was the bridge between standard education and modern innovations, assisting with all aspects of technology including installation of smart TVs in every classroom.

When not enhancing Northgate to its best version, Farrar is busy as a parent with a sophomore at Northgate, and an eighth grader and a fourth grader at NorthCreek Academy in Walnut Creek. His wife, Jen Farrar, is a science teacher for sixth, seventh and eighth grade at NorthCreek.

Farrar is also one of the many driving forces of the Rancho San Miguel Swim Team, where his children have swum for ten years. Over those years, he has built a relationship with many of the community members. He recalls seeing many of the parents from this community at Northgate back-to-school nights.

“It was really fun. They were really gracious and complimentary, encouraging me, saying ‘Welcome back’. It made me feel really good - I felt as if I was part of a community.”

Outside of the Northgate community, Farrar built another community. He used to run a summer camp for disadvantaged children from ages 8 to 18. The program ran all year long, but the highlight was the summer. For five days the children would go away, swim, cook on an open fire, build teepees, and more.

Returning from three years at California High School, Farrar is glad to be back in his community. In fact, he rides his bike to school many days. He envisions many great things for Northgate such as establishing a desperately needed seating area outside for the students.

His work in the school and community has brought people closer and has made significant changes within it. “It’s great to be able to live and work and serve in the community where you live,” he said. “It has a special significance to it.”

Eva Trujillo is a sophomore and a member of the Sentinel staff at Northgate High School.

Northgate Vice Principal Tucker Farrar visits with students during lunchtime on Sept. 15. Farrar, a Northgate community resident and a former math teacher, joined the administration team this year.

Court

Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Contra Costa County is a nonprofit organization that recruits, trains, and supports volunteer advocates as a powerful voice for the best interest of abused and neglected children living in foster care during the court process, in order to help every child ultimately thrive in a safe, stable, and permanent home.

As we celebrate our 41st year of serving the children and youth in our community, we are excited to share the launch of our new CASA Tutor Program. As you can imagine, children and youth in foster care face many additional academic hurdles. Finding ongoing, quality

academic support at no cost can be a challenge, so we are taking a big step to help fill that need. We’d love for you to join us!

CASA Tutors will provide consistent and accessible educational support to children in grades TK-12 who are already working with one of our CASA Volunteer Advocates. They will assist with homework and learning concepts in a supportive, trauma informed environment and help students reach their educational goals, build their confidence, and feel supported as they navigate through their school years.

We are filling our first CASA Tutor training cohort and are looking for volunteers who want to make a lasting difference in the lives of local children who have been abused or neglected.

If you have a background in teaching or tutoring, have approximately 6-12 hours a month to give, and are interested in learning more about the CASA Tutor Program, we invite you to email volunteer@ cccocasa.org and to join us at an upcoming Informational Session.

A few Napa Valley Wine and Food Tasting Experiences

Just a short drive from Walnut Creek, is the world-renowned wine growing region of Napa Valley that is a wine appellation with 16 diverse AVA’s (American Viticultural Area). Many of the exquisite producers of cabernet sauvignon originate from these famous AVA’s: Mount Veeder, Howell Mountain, Atlas Peak, Rutherford, Spring Mountain, and Stags Leap. Nestled in the valley are more than 400 distinctive, award winning and picturesque wineries yet to be discovered.

The best things in life are the experiences we share, savor, and uncover to create lifelong memories. Napa Valley is where anyone and everyone can experience the taste of the good life. To take advantage of Napa being in our relative “backyard”, where people from around the world make this a destination, my husband and I have set a goal to visit a new winery each month. Over the last few years, wineries have popularized tasting experiences that envelop a tour, ability to learn about the history of the winery along with a curated wine and food experience.

It brings me immense joy to head to Napa Valley each month with my hubby. I would like to share three fantastic wineries that offer wine experiences with all of you. Handwritten Wines is in the quaint town of Yountville just down the road from Thomas Keller’s Ad Hoc restaurant. The décor is a mix of luxurious upholstered

furniture, leather couches, marble, and stone tables and lots of great accessories including unique light fixtures and distinctive open-air brass etageres. We selected the “bread and butter” tasting experience that included a variety of butters from around the country, elk and blueberry salami, aged gouda, truffle potato chips and baguette slices from Bouchon bakery. We started with a Relie Cuvee followed by a Pinot Noir then 5 different small lot cabernet sauvignons in a comparative format. This winery will become a fast favorite for all cabernet lovers. (www.handwrittenwines.com)

B Cellars is in Oakville nestled among a picture-perfect garden, unique figurative bronze statues by Seward Johnson, lush greenery, a stunning wine cave and a aspirational Michelin star kitchen. We were welcomed by Christopher who gave us a highly personalized wine and food pairing experience. We began with a taste of their signature Blend 23 wine that was paired with a sophisticated bite

paired with a crostini topped with grainy mustard, handmade rabbit sausage and adorned with a cornichon. comprised of heirloom peach, whipped goat cheese, cider syrup on a cucumber slice. We took our glass of Blend 23 on a tour of this stunning property. Upon our return, we enjoyed a curated wine tasting experience paired with amuse bouche bites including a sushi roll, duck confit bundle paired with apple relish and a lamb slider. Our wines included Rose, Pinot Noir, Petite Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. We were delighted to have the opportunity to taste three wines produced from Andy Beckstoffer’s six heritage vineyards. B Cellars is a destination if you are a foodie and aspiring home sommelier. (www.bcellars.com)

Sequoia Grove Winery in Rutherford has a rich history and earned the distinction of being a certified Napa green winery. The winery is highly regarded for producing world class reserve and single vineyard cabernet sauvignon wines. Upon entering the winery, you are greeted by enormous and beautiful sequoia redwood trees. Named after their prized Cabernet Cambium, we entered this stunning room that was named “The Best Napa Valley Tasting Room” to enjoy our food and wine pairing experience. We began with a Montana Dorada Chardonnay that was simply divine and

After visiting wine country for years, I wanted to pass along a few tips. Best to book several weeks in advance to ensure a reservation. Pack a portable cooler in your trunk with ice or ice packs to store any wine you purchase, especially during the warm summer months. Be curious; ask questions with your wine experience host or wine maker. Discover the winery history, wine making techniques or the hidden and/or favorite must visit places in the valley. Cheers!

Tips from an Expert: The Secrets of Bathroom Remodeling

Make Space

Many people like a bathroom with a lot of open space, so taking the space back is a major tip most are unaware of. A bathroom can look unique by removing an existing feature or altering. For example, you can clear a large bathroom vanity and install a simple pedestal sink, leaving you with more mobility area. In addition, you can consider downsizing the toilet and removing some shelves from the wall. Removing those extra features will make way for future openings. Sometimes, eliminating some of what you already have is an excellent way of remodeling.

Lighten Up

Consider the addition of recessed lighting throughout your ceiling to lighten up the room. You’ll want to think about how you’ll be using the mirror in your bathroom and whether you want aesthetic lighting or purely functional. Whether you’re applying make-up or shaving, bright light fixtures go a long way in helping you to see what you’re doing, especially when they’re placed appropriately for space. If you’d like to have the option of lighting versatility in your bathroom, consider adding a dimmer switch to the recessed lighting.

Color Pop

Ever thought of adding trim around your bathroom? It can punch up the entire look and inject a pop of color where you might not have anticipated it. You can add a simple tile trim, vibrant wallpaper, or simply paint an accent wall. Speak with a team member

to see what color will look best and what material will add the most value.

Out of Sight

Think about installing a vanity with drawer storage rather than doors. Drawers are easier to gain access to and offer more options for organization. In addition, they can be cut out around the plumbing and extra-large to accommodate more oversized items.

Inside Out

Why not utilize window treatments that let light in or add a new window altogether. You’ll be surprised at the lighter, airier, and more open feel of your bathroom once you allow more natural light in.

If your bathroom doesn’t border on an area where a window can be added, fake it. Try adding plants to brighten the room substantially, and they also freshen up the air. Even artwork that mimics the look and feel of nature will inject a spa-like element into your bathroom.

The Fullmore Family Haunted House is baaaack!

This family combines their passion for theater, the holidays and philanthropy into one spooktacular event, and you’re invited!

For 10 years, the Fullmore family has been growing their haunt, from exterior decorations to a full walk-thru attraction. In 2020, they put on a Covid safe haunted event where you were invited to walk through their front yard and up onto their porch where you could look in the windows at all the Halloween scenes set up in each room of their home. That year, they were chosen as a winner of Walnut Creek Rec’s Spooky Streets & Halloween Haunts contest.

In 2021, they moved from Larkey Park to Northgate where they hosted their first full walk-through event. It was a hit with thousands of people attending over 3 days. It evolves each year and this year, they have added 200 additional square feet with lots of new surprises and scares in store for you! But be warned, it’s not for the faint at heart.

To keep it accessible to all, admission is FREE, and donations will be accepted for Make-a-Wish of the Greater Bay Area for those inclined to contribute. (They raised $5300 in 2021)

It is open from 6-9 pm October 28-30 at 244 Corte De La Reina, Walnut Creek.

Hope to see you there if you DARE!

Dental Careers

Most people are accustomed to visit their dental office regularly for a professional cleaning and checkup with x-rays, as a part of maintaining good general health. Many may not consider, however, the wide variety of employment positions that make this type of healthcare possible. We might be biased, but our whole team thinks that the dental field is a great place to work. We’d like to share a little bit about our positions, in part because we are proud of them, but also in part to inspire young people to consider a career in dentistry.

Dental hygiene - The dental hygienist has been specially trained and licensed to do the procedures necessary to keep your gums healthy and to help you navigate your ongoing dental needs. Dental hygienists typically fulfill college requirements and then attend a two-year program for dental hygiene. In our area, DVC has a popular program. Dental hygienists work independently, choosing their own workdays and taking responsibility for the needs of their patients. In many offices, there is a need for dental hygienists who only work one, two, or three days per week. This flexibility appeals to many dental hygienists. If you have an aptitude for studying general sciences, love working with people, and are a hands-on type of person, this could be a career to consider.

Dental assisting - Commonly, dental assistants work chairside with the doctor to help facilitate a patient’s treatment, but they can also work behind the scenes in various capabilities. A dental assistant can function with varying levels of credentialing, starting with an entry-level assistant who is trained “on the job”; one example of initial credentialing is to become certified to take dental x-rays, which a beginner dental assistant can learn fairly easily. Becoming a “registered dental assistant” involves licensure allowing more complicated responsibilities, like making and cementing a temporary crown. At the highest end of dental assistant credentialing is the “registered dental assistant with extended functions.” With this credential, a dental assistant can be licensed to help on a more advanced level. For example, after the doctor removes any decay and gets a tooth ready for a filling, and RDA-EF2 is licensed to place the filling material, adjust the bite, and polish it. Many dental assistants enjoy the challenge of these higher responsibilities.

The administrative team - Helping to schedule appointments, managing patients’ accounts, and fielding questions are just some of the responsibilities of a dental administrator. If you love working with people and forming relationships with them, and if you enjoy multitasking and talking on the phone, this could be a good position for you. If your strength is more with numbers and computers, a behind the scenes administrative position like bookkeeping or payroll might suit you well.

Dental technician – Most of you have probably never seen or met a dental technician, but you may have benefited from their work. They make many of the restorations, like porcelain crowns, which are used to restore broken down teeth. They also make orthodontic appliances of various types. Dental technicians must be proficient with working with their hands and can often listen to music or

podcasts while they work. Doesn’t that sound fun? For an introvert especially, this can be an enjoyable position, combining technical talents with artistic talents in a way that is very rewarding.

Doctors - Of all the positions in the dental office, becoming a doctor requires the most number of years of education: usually four years of college are followed by four years of dental school. An additional two or three years would be required for those who wish to specialize, i.e., limit their practice to only doing one type of dentistry: root canals, children’s dentistry, gum treatments, oral surgery, or orthodontics. But a general dentist can branch out into any of the specialties to the degree he or she wishes. The flexibility to do what you enjoy the most and what suits your strengths is one of the advantages of being a doctor. Dentists in private practice can combine many excellent things: being an entrepreneur and owning your own business, hiring and working with people you like, or (if you prefer) working just the days and hours you want and letting someone else run the business, using the artistic half of your brain by making beautiful smiles, using the technical side of your brain to work with so many instruments and materials that make up dentistry, and much more. It’s a wonderful way to serve other people and help them be healthy.

Each different team member plays an integral part in working together to provide excellent treatment for patients. Can you see yourself in any of these roles? Give us a call to ask about job shadowing, to come see in person if a career in the dental field might be for you!
