Resident Feature Ann-Marie is a tap dancer and sings in the local chapter of Sweet Adeline’s, a women’s barbershop organization called Diablo Vista Chorus. She attended UC Santa Barbara for her undergraduate degree and Santa Clara University for her Master’s. After working for Stanford University and Yahoo!, she took time off to raise her two children. She recently returned to work as Director of Marketing & Development at Contra Costa Christian Schools. Mike, who attended De La Salle High School and is an avid mountain biker, received his BS from Cal State Hayward. He also worked for several tech companies like Facebook and Pinterest before his current position as Principal Software Engineer at Silicon Valley Bank. The couple’s two children, Parker and Payton, are also quite talented and involved with technology. Parker, a sophomore at Northgate High School, has been acting professionally since he was six years old. Early on he was in commercials for Duracell, Nickelodeon, and others. A performance on a commercial for Million Dollar Listing NY won him the Young Artist Academy Award in 2019. But the role he is most known for is Billy in Billy Elliot the Musical. He is the youngest person to ever play the role, starting at age 9. He won multiple awards including the 2019 BroadwayWorld Award for Best Lead Actor in a Musical Professional for his portrayal. He has released several songs including an original pop song called Dreams Come True. He has also appeared on the TV show Dance Moms. He is an Instagram influencer with several partnerships. He and his sister, Payton, recently appeared on a new Disney show called Disney’s Magic Bake Off. The first episode aired in August; Parker and Payton appeared on the Lion King themed episode on Sept. 11 as team “2 Ps in a Pate a Choux.” The Fullmores always go all out for Halloween

T
he Fullmores have been residents of the Bay Area their entire lives, but just recently landed in Northgate this past March, moving here from the Larkey Park neighborhood in the northern part of Walnut Creek. AnnMarie grew up in Saratoga, and Mike is from Concord. Their paths crossed in 2001 when both were working at National Semiconductor’s headquarters in Sunnyvale. They married in 2003.
Payton is now 13 and a 7th grader at Contra Costa Christian School. In addition to her time on Disney’s Magic Bake Off, she is an avid baker, a Miss Preteen California, and an equestrian. Her posts on Instagram of her baking creations is what caught the attention of Disney’s casting director. She used her platform from the Miss Preteen pageant to raise money and awareness for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and also trains with her horse, Amara Z, in the Hunter/Jumper category. The Fullmores moved to Northgate, in part, to be close to the equestrian center and to Northgate High School. “We love the friendly neighbors and the large quiet cul-de-sac where the neighborhood kids play out in the front like we used to when we were kids,” says Ann-Marie. “It feels very much like going back to a simpler time.” They also attend St. Matthew Church on Wiget Lane and make it a priority to help

others. The family has been putting on an annual haunted house, and this year it will raise money for Make-a-Wish Foundation of the Greater Bay Area (see article on page 11 for information on this year’s Spooktacular). Meanwhile, during the pandemic, Parker sold off most of his Billy Elliot memorabilia and raised $6000 to help the Civic Theatre, a theatre he had performed at in Pennsylvania that was in danger of closing during the shutdown. The Fullmores did have a three year stint away from the Bay Area when Parker expressed his dream to be in musical theatre. They moved to Manhattan and lived in a high rise in the middle of Times Square for a year. “That was an incredible experience,” shares AnnMarie. “We loved the hustle and bustle, getting around without a car and seeing Broadway shows every week.” After Parker landed the role of Billy Elliot, the family traveled with him as he performed across the country for three years.

W
e love the holidays, especially Halloween, and we love theatre. Between us, we have been involved with theatre for over 30 years in various roles including actor, director, choreographer, set decorator, stage manager and make-up artist. This year, we have combined our two passions and are excited to give back to the community by offering this free spooktacular event! We’ve taken our Halloween decorating to a whole new level and created a theatrical home haunt, filled with sets we’ve built and professional actors to scare you. We have converted our side yard and garage into a Haunted Victorian home and decorated it with actual furniture and items from that era, so perhaps you’ll get more frights than even we’ve planned!

Resolving Trauma is for the Brave By Katie Coelho, BA, ACN with Body Love Cafe
T
he truth is, we all hide our emotions occasionally. We pretend, avoid, and deny uncomfortable emotions as a defense mechanism in an effort of self-preservation. We do this most often with difficult emotions like shame, fear, or rejection. When we experience events that emotionally overwhelm us and we’re unable to process what is happening, we bury them deep inside where our “weaknesses” can’t be seen
or further exploited. We end up hiding them from ourselves too. Yet, they’re still there. These unresolved emotions get trapped in the body where they constantly emanate a vibrational frequency. Essentially, they fester: draining our energy, leading to burnout, emotional imbalance, and eventually dis-ease. When we chronically repress emotions, we build heart-walls that further separate us
from authentic connection. Even without consciously burying emotions we can’t seem to stop the recurring patterns of worry, resentment, sadness, hopelessness or unworthiness despite best whiteknuckled efforts. Identifying and resolving past trauma is the key for those brave enough to say enough is enough. “I’m done grimly struggling with (fill in the blank)”.

Oncology Nurses in Walnut Creek Honored By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991

he nonprofit Cancer Support Community (CSC) of the San Francisco Bay Area supports over 2000 people annually who are dealing with cancer. All services are free to patients and their families, and the organization primarily raises funds through donations and events. This year’s gala had to shift to an online film festival due to COVID-19 concerns and took place on Sept. 18. The in-person dinner that was slated to accompany the film festival was to honor oncology nurses working at John Muir and three Epic Care oncology centers in the Bay Area. “Instead of simply canceling [the dinner]…,” said Read Phillips, founder of Beets (the catering company), CSC suggested we work together to bring meals to oncology nurses at local medical facilities.” So on Sept. 10, CSC staff delivered 140 box lunches to oncology nurse at John Muir Hospital and three other facilities.

W
ith 50 years in the making, Rancho San Miguel (RSM) Swim Club wins the Diablo Club Swim League (DCSL) Championship in 2021. “The atmosphere was absolutely electric,” said Christian Rassmussen, Head Coach of RSM. “This win has been a long time coming -- 50 years to be exact.” According to Rasmussen, the last time RSM won the DCSL League was in 1971. In addition, RSM also won the Dual Meet against arch-rival, Scottsdale. RSM has not won the coveted title since 1974. The 2021 season appears to be one for the record books, and Rassmussen credits it to years of building up the competitive swim team. “Many of our swimmers have been with us since they were four years old,” said Rasmussen. “Today, they remain committed and have become excellent competitors, even though many also swim on the Northgate High School team.” RSM is one of eight teams that compete in the Diablo Club Swim League, whose mission it is to balance individual skill development with competition, sportsmanship, spirit, and stewardship of swimming. The eight teams in the DCSL are Forest Hills, Rancho San Miguel, Las Trampas, Scottsdale, Livorna,

Springwood, Pleasant Hill Aquatics, and Walnut Country. RSM says that their success is maintained by keeping a balance of fun and structure. According to Rasmussen, the moment they join the program they learn key swimming techniques as well as team commitment. “We also make it a priority to allow time for fun,” said Rasmussen. “Many of our swimmers have stayed committed to us because of the culture we embrace.”

The importance of caring for our mental health By Zach Diestler, Counselor at Contra Costa Christian High School
“W
hy don’t parents care more about their children’s mental health?” she asks me, her wide eyes avoiding mine, peering over her mask as if to find the answer hiding in the corner of the classroom. She tells me that it’s not a good time to talk to either of her parents about her needs, because her mom is handling a lot of stress at work and her dad is going through a significant health challenge. “But the whole family is trying to help him get better by reminding him to take his meds, not eating certain foods and all that...” she trails off, eyes misty as she tries to reconcile her family’s prioritization of physical over mental health. The reasons families are resistant to therapy vary, but it usually comes down to some variation of stigma. When a child is physically ill, no one looks to blame the family or shame them for seeking treatment. Instead, the community rallies around the family, brings over meals and encourages them with stories of their own recovery. However, when someone is suffering from a mental illness, the stigma conjures up images of people living in padded rooms or cardboard boxes. The community is unsure how to respond, and I understand their fears.
The emotions I felt the first time I took my son to therapy were similar to when my wife first introduced kale into my breakfast smoothie: I was intrigued and trepidatious, knowing it was good for me but concerned about the process. I found out pretty quickly that therapy is hard: my parenting was challenged, issues from my childhood came to the surface, and we even had homework! However, we also experienced the guidance of a skilled therapist who helped us deepen our connection with each other, shifted our paradigms and changed our lives. When things were really tough, our family was “on the couch” weekly, when things got better we paired down to monthly and now we go in when we need a “tune up”. All the while we’ve maintained a strong relationship with our community and my testimony to them has always been the same: “If you need help, seek it. It’s difficult, but so worth it.”

Being authentically transparent is one of hardest things a person can do, but in the right environment, it is also one of the most rewarding. That’s why therapy isn’t for the weak. It’s for those who choose to look in the face of illness and say, “I see you, I’m with you and we will do whatever it takes to help you recover.” My prayer is that authentic transparency would spread

O
n Sat., Sept. 4, five adorable mini horses made overworked critical care staff at John Muir Hospital smile and melted their stress away. Two critical care nurses, Dana Maiorana and Christina Amate, who have been friends since 6th grade, organized the visit from Angels for Minis, a nonprofit horse rescue located on Northgate Road. Dana and Christina, who both rode horses when they were young, have been volunteering at Angels for Minis for the past three years and noticed how their time with the horses helped relieve stress and gave them a sense of peace and happiness. “The past year and a half have been really hard [on the nurses and staff due to the pandemic],” said Dana. “We’ve seen a lot of anxiety and stress. We thought it would be nice if we could bring the minis to our co-workers.”
After approvals from the hospital and paperwork, that thought became a reality. Scout, a certified therapy animal, was allowed inside to the break room to visit with staff who were working in critical care. Four other horses, Fiona, Angel, Willow and Cisco, were outside the hospital near the employee entrance for all employees and family members to enjoy. Some even came on their day off and brought their children. “It was a very special thing to see,” added Dana. “It was so therapeutic to see some teary-eyed people being able to hug and love on the animals. This was 100% for the staff. If you are like many people, your gums can sometimes be puffy and irritated, and even bleed a bit when you brush or floss. This condition, either gingivitis or gum disease, is caused in part by not cleaning effectively enough to remove all the plaque from your teeth, resulting in a bacterial infection. The infection progresses to the more serious condition called periodontitis. Studies have shown an association with periodontal disease and diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even Alzheimer’s! It makes sense that an active infection in your mouth can have effects throughout your body, since it’s all connected through the circulatory system. It’s about much more than simply the risk of tooth loss.
WHAT TO DO?
Keep yourself in optimal health by first taking care of your mouth and smile! Addressing any bacterial infections in your oral cavity is a simple, conservative first step. So how do we prevent or treat periodontal disease? The basic idea is to disrupt the biofilm - the sticky, slimy layer of bacterial colonies - that constantly forms on our teeth. Effective teeth cleaning at home is essential, possibly followed by an antimicrobial mouthwash or rinse. Good nutrition is also important. These should be addressed at home on a daily basis. However, in addition, regular visits are needed with a hygienist at your dental office to treat the areas below the gumline, where the bacterial biofilm is out of your reach. So three things have to be in place to have healthy teeth and gums: what you do at home on a daily basis, what the dental hygienist does when you visit the dental office, and the appropriate frequency between professional dental hygiene visits. Everyone has a unique “balance point,” an optimal interval for visits to the dental hygienist; waiting too long between visits will keep gums in a state of ongoing health risk.
