It’s the season of giving thanks, and I truly hope that each and every one of you, my neighbors, has found reasons to be grateful this year. I continue to be grateful for this magazine that focuses on good news and helps us all get to know our neighbors better. Jesse’s job with Citrix as a network engineer brought them to California, but now he is back working at Cisco. Misha is a real estate agent with Compass in Walnut Creek, specializing in the Northgate area. Her expertise in real estate is anchored in her upbringing as the daughter of a real estate investor. Growing up surrounded by home design and renovation projects, her passion for real estate developed organically. In 2015, she embarked on her independent real estate journey, commencing her career in property management and real estate sales with a local brokerage, Park One Properties, Inc., based in Walnut Creek. Their first “baby” was a fur baby named Cameron, a Schnoodle (Schnauzer and Poodle mix). They adopted him in 2012. “He is a sweet boy who loves to hike and play with Jaxon,” adds Misha.

he Davis family came to Northgate in 2020. Misha and Jesse were both born and raised on the east coast but dreamed of moving to California someday. They got that chance in 2014 and found their first townhouse in Walnut Creek. They love Northgate for the schools, the walkability, the open space, and their neighbors. “It really feels like a community here,” says Misha. Misha grew up in Connecticut and attended Fairfield University. Her first job was with the Department of Justice. Jesse grew up in the Maryland/Washington DC area and attended Cisco Boot Camp as a high school student, earning college credit and an opportunity to become a Cisco intern in IT. “A girl who I worked with said she knew a guy that would be perfect for me,” says Misha. They went on a blind date and 8 months later they were engaged. Jesse says, “From the moment I met her on our first “blind date,” it was clear that she possessed a captivating blend of fun-loving spirit and genuine warmth. Her infectious laughter and sparkling personality created an instant connection. As we spent more time together, it became evident that Misha was the one I had been searching for. It wasn’t just her magnetic charm and sense of humor; it was the way she made every moment feel special, the way she listened intently, and the way she cared deeply for those around her.” In 2012, they had an intimate wedding at the at the Waterview in Monroe, CT.

Their son Jaxon arrived in 2017; he is 6 and in 1st grade. Jaxson loves sports, chess, drawing and making/designing things out of paper. He just learned to ride a bike, and now the family enjoys bike rides around the neighborhood. For his 6th birthday, the Davis’ went to Disneyland where they all dressed up as Star Wars characters. Jesse, a huge Star Wars fan, and Jaxon bond over Star Wars Legos, collectibles, and movies. Jesse also helps coach Jaxon’s Little League team and his Surf Soccer team. Misha volunteers at Walnut Acres as often as she can and also enjoys belly dancing as a way to connect with her Persian roots. Jesse is musical too, playing the guitar in his free time. They bought their home here in 2020 and began remodeling and fixing it up. “All of our neighbors are so kind,” adds Jesse. “One even helped us build a new fence and trim our trees. Everyone is friendly and watches out for each other.” Misha adds, “All of our family is on the east coast, so we rely on our friends and community for support, and we are always here to help others in return.” Their family motto is “Be Kind: a small act may make a huge difference in someone’s life.” Welcome to Northgate Jesse, Misha and Jaxon! We hope to see them riding their bikes around Walnut Acres or hiking in the Castle Rock Park area with their sweet schnoodle Cameron.

When not traveling to visit family for Thanksgiving, they like to host or attend Friendsgiving. “We adore Friendsgiving because it’s an opportunity to gather with cherished friends, celebrating our unique connections and creating cherished memories. CASA supports kids in foster care By Denise Coyne, Resident since 1999 and Colleen Miller, CASA Development Director

ASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Contra Costa County ‘s mission is to provide programs to support abused and neglected children in foster care and to help every child find a permanent home and complete their education. CASA does this by recruiting and training volunteers to advocate in the best interests of children in foster care. Advocates not only work with the child, but they also interact with the child’s social worker, attorney, educators, foster parents/caregivers, and other service providers to ensure that judges have everything they need to make the best decisions for each child. But the work doesn’t stop there. CASA also provides tutoring, reproductive health services, help for youth in the foster care and juvenile system, and a greatly needed therapy program. CASA and its partner, A Home Within, provides much needed mental health services for young people who have all been impacted by trauma. In California, it can take up to a year for youth to get mental health services – that is far too long. Starting new programs requires funding, but thanks to the visionary nonprofit, Impact 100 East Bay, CASA and AHW received funding to make this program a reality. Over 100 youth have been served since the beginning. We are grateful to Impact 100 and their support. Impact100 was created as an empowering model designed to help women to see themselves as philanthropists and to support transformational grant-making within their local communities, with a minimum grant of $100,000. The model works with members each donating $1,000 annually. These donations are pooled and

are subsequently awarded to qualifying nonprofit organizations in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. For CASA, AHW, and our young people in foster care, Impact 100s grant was a game changer…and actually a life changer for so many young people. Impact 100 continues to partner with CASA throughout the project, giving support and ensuring that the program is successful. On October 21, 2023, CASA of CCC will have its annual Evening of Promise event at Boundary Oak Golf Course. This year CASA will be presenting its Light of Hope Award to Impact 100 for their amazing support and commitment to our young people in foster care.

Ten Things I Learned Walking the Camino de Santiago By Mike Wenzell, Resident since 1995

recently completed the Camino de Santiago in Spain – a roughly 500mile journey that starts in St. Jean Pied de Port in France and finishes in Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The “Way of Saint James” is a Christian / spiritual pilgrimage that dates back to the ninth century. My wife, Kassie, walked a portion of the Camino – from Sarria to Santiago, then continued out to Finisterre at the Atlantic Ocean (once called “the end of the world”) in 2018. Her pilgrimage, with one of her dearest friends, Diane D., covered over 120 miles. Kas raved about this experience and the impact it had on her life. We spoke about it often and planned to do the entire Camino together – possibly for our 40th wedding anniversary, which was this past May. Unfortunately, Kas was diagnosed with cancer in March of 2021 and passed away in July 2022. After nearly a year of soul-searching, I decided to walk the Camino on my own, and take Kas with me in spirit. It was something that I needed and something that I believe would make her proud. The experience far exceeded my expectations. I carried the same backpack that Kassie carried five years earlier, albeit a bit heavier because of what I was now carrying. I completed the journey in 30 days – and it was challenging – physically, mentally and emotionally. The first day, crossing from France into Spain through the Pyrenees, covered 16 miles and nearly 5,000 feet of elevation. I hiked many hours on my own – which is what I wanted and needed. I also met many, many people from all over the world. For roughly a two-week stretch, I walked, talked and shared drinks and meals with a group of about 12-15 pilgrims, or “peligrinos”. Most of these folks started off doing the Camino on their own, like me, yet we became a close “Camino Family”. It is amazing how close you can become with total strangers in such a short period of time. Then, for the last five days of my trek, two of our best friends, Rob and Diane D., joined me in Sarria and walked with me to Santiago, where the amazing Cathedral is the ultimate destination of “The Way”. I would like to share ten lessons that I learned while walking the Camino de Santiago: 1.

Get Out of Your Comfort Zone. Try something new, something different, that you never thought you would or could do – you are never too old to try something new. You will grow as a person and be better for it. People are Good. Between the media and social media, there is way too much judgment of people, creation of divisiveness and, to a certain extent, manufacturing of hate. It was nice to disconnect from the world for over a month. Look a person in the eye, shake their hand, hug them – people ARE good! Spend Time by Yourself. Be proactive in making time to spend alone to reflect on where you are, where you came from and where

you are going – be at peace with yourself. It is good for your mind, body and soul. 4. Look for Signs to Make Sure You are on the Right Path. Along the Camino, there are many different signs – the Camino scallop shell and yellow arrows - pointing the Way to Santiago. This reminded me to always pay attention to where you are going – whatever your goals, dreams and aspirations may be – and look for signs (maybe even in the mirror) to make sure you are headed in the right direction. 5. I feel Dumb only Being Able to Speak One Language. I met so many people from all over the world on the Camino – and nearly all speak multiple languages. Most Americans speak only English (and arguably, I struggle with that!). 6. Don’t Wait ‘til Tomorrow. Do it now, today, whatever it is! Too many people wait too long to take that trip, plan that vacation or embark on their ideal adventure. Book it today – there are no guarantees you’ll be here tomorrow to do whatever it is you dream to do! 7. Your Mind and Body are Stronger than You Think. When it feels like you cannot take one more step, or face one more challenge – you’d be surprised at how resilient you are and how a strong will can overcome nearly anything. It’s all about attitude! 8. Look Back Every Once in a While. Most of the Camino is headed in the western direction. Each morning, I learned to look back – and was often rewarded with beautiful sunrises from the east. We are all so focused sometimes on where we are going or where we want to get to – that we don’t always appreciate from where we came. Look back occasionally to see how far you have come, and take pride in your accomplishments. 9. The World is Exceptionally Beautiful. Get outside, travel, look around and appreciate the natural beauty around us every single day. There is so much wonder for which we should all be grateful. 10. Walk the Walk. I talked about walking the Camino for a while, just as I “talked” about doing a lot of things. Then, last April, I spent an afternoon walking the beach in Bodega Bay – one of Kas’ “Happy Places”, and I decided to stop “Talking the Talk” and “Walk the Walk” – so I did – literally. So, stop talking and start doing!! I used a guidebook called A Pilgrim’s Guide to the Camino de Santiago by John Brierley, but there are many blogs, books, and YouTube videos where you can learn more.

Private or Public School?

hen choosing a school, you have a choice of sending your student to either a private school or a public school. Which one do you choose? You might start off the process with a list of pros and cons and then move to touring the schools. But what is it really like at each school? Glad you asked that question! As a teacher who has taught at both, I have a unique perspective. In my experience, the public schools were more convenient for families, offered a wide range of sports and activities and a broad range of classes. Yet, they also faced their challenges. The average class size was over 30 students, and there were several students who couldn’t get the classes they desperately wanted because they were impacted. Some students failed to find a friend group and sat alone at lunch all year. Now I teach at Contra Costa Christian Schools and see how the private school environment is vastly different from the public school environment. What I first noticed was that the class sizes are significantly smaller. Teaching a class of 18 instead of 30 +, you can really get to know your students and help them reach their full potential. Our students are able to have 1:1 conversations with their teachers and get extra help if needed. We also offer a wide range of sports and activities, but since we are smaller, most, if not all, of our students actually get to participate! I was surprised to see that a smaller

school like ours offers so many activities including drama, clubs, cheerleading and multiple sports per season. Our school’s theme for the year is “Known and Loved,” and I can attest that this is true. The staff knows all of the kids by name and cares about them deeply, even if they don’t have that child in their classes. If we see a child eating alone, we intervene and try to help get them connected with a friend group. As a Christian school, we also encourage the students to build their faith by teaching them about the bible and offering chapel. Teaching at CCCS has changed my perception of private schools and ultimately improved the way I teach.

Northgate athletes are on fire as the fall sports season is coming to an end in October; November means playoffs for many of our outstanding teams. Northgate´s first ever girls flag football team has won six consecutive games as of mid-October, defeating Las Lomas on October 11. Girls water polo is 13-2 as of mid-October, and playoffs look promising. Girls basketball is 16-8 so far. Check www.northgatebroncos.org for up to date playoff information. Homecoming

Northgate Leadership has been working tirelessly to plan a week of fun leading up to the homecoming game against Alhambra High (October 27th) and for the awaited dance that follows (October 28th). With Halloween right around the corner, our theme for this year´s celebration was all out Hocoween! There were fun spirit days, from Candy Day, where students dressed in theme of their assigned candy, to coming to school in your favorite past costume. Following a long Northgate tradition, each grade level performed a fiveminute skit during the pep rally.

Now, imagine a wine bar that takes this experience to a new level - The Library Social Club is the latest sensation to grace Walnut Creek. It is a combination of an above ground speakeasy and a wine bar. JB Balingit, chef and owner of the Hideout Kitchen in Lafayette, started a wine club in 2020 in a room at the Hideout Kitchen aptly named “The Library”, which kept his customers connected along with outside dining, events, and concerts during the pandemic.

The wine list has been carefully curated by JB, Leo, and Eddy along with a food menu that changes quarterly. Since they have been open for about three months, I believe we will be in for a treat with the upcoming menu. JB’s current favorite pairing is the smoked salmon crudo and a glass of Chablis with its citrus fragrance, minerality, and high acidity.

JB shared that he wanted to expand the library concept through opening a spot in Walnut Creek along with including Leo and Eddy Negrette as partners, who are like brothers to him. The interior design is a culmination of antiques, cozy seating vignettes, assorted textured and colored pillows, eclectic furniture, and a visual feast of unique artwork. JB’s mission is to serve world class wines paired with unquestionable hospitality and have their guest’s experience be memorable.

My husband and I visited a few weeks ago for our 25th wedding anniversary before our dinner reservation at La Sen. We had the pleasure of being hosted by Benjamin. He took the time to ask us about our wine preferences and gave us a taste of four different wines to choose from. He was warm, engaging, knowledgeable and completely authentic. We enjoyed the mascarpone toast with truffle honey and almonds which elevated the wine tasting experience.

They range from the Petaluma gap, Livermore, Burgundy, Loire Valley, Alexander Valley to Paso Robles. JB enjoys Gruner Vetliner, which reminds him of growing up in the Philippines and swimming in a lake that was near an active volcano. Gruner Vetliner has notes of ash, minerality, citrus and white pepper. JB wears many hats including chef and takes meticulous attention to the recipe development and execution of each dish to further elevate the wine tasting experience. Northgate Girls Water Polo is poised to take on new challenges By Shannon Polkinghorn, Resident since 2004, Sports Photographer

resh off the first North Coast championship in program history, the Northgate girls water polo team is back for another season. But if you thought the girls would rest on the laurels of last year’s championship season, you would be wrong. Very wrong. Team captains Chloe Pappas and Sophia Weise explained that getting a taste of the success that last year’s championship brought has given the team an even bigger desire to do it all over again this season. In order to do so however, they will have to work even harder since they were moved up to Division I this year. Last season’s hallmarks of accountability, hard work and relentless effort will have to remain strong this year if they want another championship. And second year head coach Jane Bergez isn’t shy about reminding the girls about that every day. But Bergez doesn’t just talk. According to the team captains, she has created a culture unique to most high school sports programs with this simple mantra: listen. Bergez understands that in order to get the most out of her players, she has to give them a voice and input into how the team is organized and run. In other words, it’s not about her as the coach, it’s about the players. It’s their team. And Pappas and Weise say that the girls feel empowered by that culture and that it gives them ownership of the team and thus accountability to themselves, their coaches and each other. The team is off to a 7-0 start this year and the girls and coaches are working hard to bring home even more wins for the Broncos. Maybe even the second North Coast championship in program history!
