Meet the Websters: An Adventurous Spirit

anelle Webster’s roots run deep in Northgate. She grew up here as Janelle Carter and graduated from Northgate High School in 1994. After attending college at Brigham Young University and meeting her future husband, Alex, in Utah, the couple married in 2000, started a family and moved back to Northgate in 2010.

Alex and Janelle met at a church Bunco event in Salt Lake City, UT. Janelle was working as a bonds broker. Alex is an electrical contractor. Janelle says of the fateful Bunco event, “he asked me out that night, and we stayed out talking until 2 am.

He had a date planned every night of our courtship. Whether it was just sledding in the snow or making paper airplanes and having flying competitions, he always had a plan, and I really liked that about him.”

Both Alex and Janelle are involved in giving back to the community, volunteering extensively at the public schools and at their church. Additionally Janelle volunteered as a refugee transition specialist with Jewish Family Services. “I would greet families and work to teach the mothers English, show them how to purchase groceries, use local parks, and transportation.” Now Janelle is back in school pursuing a Master’s Degree in counseling at St. Mary’s College. Alex is currently volunteering at their church as a youth pastor for teens 12-18. He arranges large activities for youth including dances, conferences, and opportunities for service and fun. Alex owns West Coast Sign Company and installed the digital reader signs at both Walnut Acres and Northgate.

He also remodeled the family’s home in the Scottsdale area of Northgate, doing most all the work himself.

The couple has four daughters. Liz, 16, attended Northgate High School up until

this fall when she saw an opportunity and interviewed for a new program through the Mt. Diablo Unified School District called College Now. This program allows students to take both their required high school courses as well as college courses at Diablo Valley College, allowing students to graduate high school while well on their way to completing an Associate of Arts degree from DVC. Janelle says, “We have been so happy with the program so far. The teachers, the counselors and the curriculum have been fantastic. Students who are in the College Now program can still participate in sports and social events at their home school. It has been an amazing opportunity for her.”

Allison is 13 and enjoys being part of the Leadership class at Foothill Middle School.

She will be serving as a Youth Ambassador for the City of Walnut Creek and traveling as a foreign exchange student to Walnut Creek’s Sister City Noceto, Italy this fall where she will stay with the family of an Italian 8th grader Nicole. Next spring, the Websters will host Nicole at their home. More information about this great opportunity for Walnut Creek youth can be found at www.wcsci.org.

Caroline is the couple’s 3rd child, a 5th grader at Walnut Acres. She is excited to attend Walker Creek’s Outdoor Education program, a rite of passage for 5th graders.

Caroline also loves performing with Curtains Up Youth Theater and is looking forward to Walnut Acres fifth grade play.

(She hopes it’s Aladdin this year!)

Suzanne is the youngest, a 3rd grader at Walnut Acres. She is a social butterfly and fills her life with play dates and swimming.

She just finished reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (the first book in the

popular series by J.K. Rowling) and will be hosting a Potter Party, complete with chocolate frogs and butterbeer.

The family loves spending time outdoors and traveling. Their cabin in Arnold, CA is a home base for their winter skiing and summer boating adventures. But they love, even more, boating on the delta. Janelle says, “We love tubing and docking at restaurants along the rivers for dinner then skiing home during the sunset. But,” Janelle adds, “our favorite place in all the world is Prairie Creek State Park near Orick, CA. We love to hike in the redwoods down to Fern Canyon looking for banana slugs and seeing the light filter through the trees. Seeing the elk during rutting season can be scary, but that adds to the excitement and wonder of being in the Redwood National Forest.”

The adventurous family has also designed a special tradition. Each child gets to plan a unique trip for her 12th birthday. The destination is chosen based on a place that matches her talents and personality.

She also has to pay for her half of the trip expenses, and she gets alone time with one NOVEMBER 2018

parent. Liz wants to be an archaeologist, so she and her dad traveled to Peru to hike Machu Picchu. The trip also included ziplining, river rafting and biking. Allison loves art, so she chose France. Allison and her mom spent 5 days in Paris and 4 days in the Loire Valley. Allison’s favorite spot was the gardens at Versailles, with its beautiful fountains and sculpture. Caroline, who is 10, is already planning her trip to a location where she can learn to scuba dive.

With all the adventures, the Websters are always happy to come home to Northgate. They love the walk-ability of the neighborhood and taking advantage of the trials in Shell Ridge Open Space. You can also find them cheering on Northgate’s football team on Friday nights. As Janelle reflects, “We are thankful to the teachers and administrators of our local public schools. We are thankful to all of the parent volunteers who make our community

great. We are thankful to our neighbors for being our friends and family here in Walnut Creek. We are thankful for the good children our kids have made friends

with and for all of the many opportunities through the schools and City of Walnut Creek recreation programs. We have loved living here.”

Old Borges Ranch has been honored to have a place on the National Register of Historic Places since 1981.

his is California; earthquakes are a fact of life. And, as an Act of God – unpredictable and unpreventable – earthquake damage is not covered by most home owners or renters insurance policies. Enter the CEA – California Earthquake Authority, a non-profit, publicly managed, privately funded entity that provides residential earthquake insurance.

As a legislatively created entity, part of the CEA’s mandate is to make earthquake coverage as affordable as possible for all Californians. Because they are not-forprofit and publicly managed, they have over $15 billion in claim paying ability and have an Excellent rating by A.M. Best Co., the world’s oldest and most authoritative rating agency of insurance companies.

The CEA, frequently in partnership with local agencies, provides education to home owners and renters to increase earthquake risk awareness. This education focuses on personal safety during an earthquake as well as methods for reducing property loss.

The goal of the CEA is to put Californians back into their homes as quickly and affordably as possible after a devastating earthquake. To do that, CEA policies focus on the basics, not the ornaments. For example, your earthquake policy will not cover swimming pools and landscaping.

On the other hand, increased rebuilding or repair costs due to current building codes are covered.

By law, insurance companies in California must offer earthquake coverage. You, however, are not required to accept. Yes,

earthquake insurance is an additional cost. However, could you afford to replace your home after a catastrophic earthquake without any coverage? Especially because government assistance can be slow, insufficient, and generally takes the form of loans.

Charity Spotlight

Have Fun, Meet People and Share the Fascinating History of Our City

hat could be more fun than hanging out with a bunch of wide-eyed third graders as they discover history by doing laundry the old fashioned way with washboards and clothes lines? Or sharing with them your amazing skills at hopscotch, marbles and jacks?

If you prefer, you might want to take those little third graders on an entertaining walking tour exploring the hidden gems, artwork and old buildings that make up our beautiful downtown Walnut Creek. The kids play bingo along the way and marvel at the photos of how our city used to look in bygone days.

If kids aren’t your thing, that’s quite all right. We have walking tours for both children and adults. This hands-(and feet) on experience opens up a memorable new way for the general public and local 3rd graders to see our city.

Children back in 1906 enjoyed games like marbles, jacks or hopscotch.

Many children who go through the Living History program have never experienced these games and are thrilled when they win a few marbles.

We also need docents to give tours through a magical old Colonial Revival home, completely furnished with beautiful antiques and a very rich history. The house has a working mechanical disk Stella music box from the early 1900s and a Victrola with plenty of old 78 records to spin.

125 miles an hour down to zero. I had a very difficult time relaxing. I was worried that my mind and body were quickly turning into mush. I needed something stimulating. I wanted to meet new friends. I wanted excitement!

No matter what your cup of tea--we have that, too--an enchanting Victorian Christmas tea that would put even Mr. Scrooge in the holiday spirit.

Fortunately, I found all of this as a volunteer with the Walnut Creek Historical Society. And the best part is, I did not have to give up my freedom. I am not locked in to a set schedule or a routine. I can work as much or as little as I want.

I moved to Walnut Creek in 1985 and probably walked and drove past The Shadelands house more than a thousand times before I even knew it was a museum. Then, in 2014, when Walnut Creek celebrated its centennial as a city, I happened to be passing by and stopped to check out the festivities. The house was open to the public and I got my first peek inside.

They say there’s no place like home. Well, in my case, it was someone else’s home, and I fell in love with it at first sight. I had to know who built it, how it got here and why it is so beautifully preserved. This home, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, is also the headquarters of the Walnut Creek Historical Society. It houses a rich archive of Contra Costa and Walnut Creek history in its collections of old newspapers, photographs, and government records.

When I retired from my career as a yearbook sales representative, I wanted to be able to make a contribution to my community.

I felt so blessed to have ended up in this great little city and I wanted to give something back. But I’m a pretty selfish person. I didn’t want to sign up for another full-time or even part-time gig.

After working for 45 years, I wanted to relax, spend time with my grandkids and travel with my husband.

Unfortunately, after about a month of retirement, I realized that I was spending way too much time playing Candy Crush and Words with Friends. I wanted to feel useful, needed and maybe even a little bit important. Retirement for me meant going from

The history of the Penniman family, who built the home, is like a juicy soap opera. I can almost feel the characters come alive when I tell their stories to our guests.

And there is nothing better, in my opinion, than seeing those bright little faces light up when I show them the butter churner or the soap saver. Playing jacks with them brings back so many wonderful memories of my own childhood.

If you’re looking for a great volunteer opportunity that’s educational, fun and flexible, we have it right here in our Northgate neighborhood. You could volunteer for one, two or even all three of these programs. Schedules are flexible. Training is provided. The rewards are priceless.

Interested in Volunteering? Potential docents shadow a few tours prior to committing. It takes time and commitment to learn a script, the ins and outs of how the tours operate as well learning how to keep the students engaged.

House Docent Volunteers – Wednesdays and Sundays from 12:45-4:15, February through October. Serving at the holiday tea in December is another option for house docents.

Living History Volunteers – Mondays and Thursdays from 9:30-1:30, spring and fall. Hours are flexible with morning or afternoon shifts available.

Long ago, before the Bay Bridge, BART and the Caldecott Tunnel, walnuts were a chief crop here in our valley. In the Living History program, third graders guess how many walnuts make a pound and weigh their nuts on an antique scale.

Pottering Around Universal Studios Orlando Resort

Most people traveling to Orlando, Florida do so with a primary intention in mind – to experience the thrills of the theme parks.

The Disney World, Sea World, and Universal Studios resorts offer the opportunity to suspend belief and enter worlds of imagination. At Universal Studios Orlando and Universal Islands of Adventure, you can race through the streets of New York City with Jimmy Fallon, transform into a Minion, escape dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, and frolic amongst the characters of Dr. Seuss.

Those two parks also offer the opportunity to enter the pages of J. K. Rowling’s world of magic at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter attractions.

At Universal Studios Orlando, wannabe wizards and witches can pass through a London backdrop through a brick wall to Diagon Alley and find the stores and shops of the Potter universe come to life. You can drink butterbeer at the Leaky Cauldron or grab an ice cream from Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlour. If you are more disposed to the dark side of magic, you can travel down Knockturn Alley. You can get your wand at Ollivanders and walk through the streets performing feats of magic – certain elements within Diagon Alley and Knockturn Alley receive remote control frequencies from the purchased wand to perform your magic. If you cannot get control of your wand, a knowledgeable witch or wizard (park employee) is near-by you assist in your tutelage.

This “world” is a sight, and more important to the illusion, you cannot see any other portion of the park while in the heart of Diagon Alley.

The most breathtaking portion of Diagon Alley is the Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts ride. Set inside the wizard bank Gringotts, the pre-ride line takes you to the entry hall of the bank where goblin bankers tend to their tasks only somewhat perturbed by your intrusion. You then meet Bill Weasley who is there with a goblin banker to take you on a tour of the Gringotts vaults. During your tour, you encounter Ron, Hermione, and Harry who help you escape the clutches of Lord Voldemorte, Bellatrix Lestrange, and the Gringotts dragon. The ride is a thrillpacked 3-D motion simulator combined with a roller coaster, providing an unforgettable experience for both the Potter fan and the non-Potter fan.

Once done with Diagon Alley, and if the witch or wizard possesses a Park-to-Park admission pass, you can proceed to King’s Cross Station to find Platform 9 ¾ to board the Hogwarts Express. This ride takes you from the Universal Studios Park to the Universal Islands of Adventure Park or vice versa. All riders need to have the Park-to-Park admission pass to ride. During our visit, some unfortunate parents had purchased single park, multiple day tickets which allowed them to only visit one park each day, thereby eliminating any opportunity to partake in this

ride. On board, the riders move from London through the English countryside to Hogsmeade. Along the way, Ron, Hermione, and Harry pass along the corridor of the train, Dementors and Hagrid fly outside your window, and then Hagrid either welcomes you to or bids you farewell from Hogsmeade.

Upon disembarking from the train, you proceed into the wizarding village of Hogsmeade with its perpetual decoration of roofs covered in snow despite the fact that it was over 97 degrees with 95 percent humidity on the day we visited in August. The visual sightlines at Hogsmeade are not as good as Diagon Alley, as neighboring The Lost Continent is visible when leaving Hogsmeade Station and Jurrasic Park can be seen from the other entrance near Hogswarts Castle. In Hogsmeade, witches and wizards can get their wands at another location of Ollivanders and dine at both the Hog’s Head and the Three Broomsticks.

There is also a short rollercoaster, Flight of the Hippogriff, set by Hagrid’s cottage with a tethered Buckbeak nearby.

The real attraction in Hogsmeade, however, lies within Hogwarts Castle, specifically the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride. In the pre-ride show, Ron, Hermione, and Harry agree to lead the muggles on a tour of Hogwarts and to take them to a quidditch game by use of enchanted benches in the Room of Requirements. The ride is another 3-D motion simulator combined with a roller coaster. Once aboard the enchanted bench, the muggles encounter a dragon, Aragog, the Whomping Willow, Dementors while flying through the Hogwarts grounds, the Forbidden Forest, a quidditch match, and the Chamber of

8 Things I Learned in Montevideo, Uruguay

Editor’s Note: Kate Bowman, a senior at Northgate High School, participated in Youth Ambassadors Program this past summer, a 3-week leadership exchange abroad for U.S. teenagers. It is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the U.S. Department of State in order to develop young adults who have a strong sense of civic responsibility, a commitment to their communities, an awareness of current and global issues, and strong interpersonal leadership skills.

s I was eating breakfast in my cozy Montevideo home this morning, it struck me that this would be the last time I would experience this opportunity. My travels in Uruguay have been a series of chances that I was handed, bigger than cereal and toast. The lessons I have gained from being here would not be available in any other context; the opportunity to learn in a country unlike my own will continue pushing me forward for the rest of my life. The last two weeks have been filled with educational and cultural awareness activities, shaping the way I view others and view the world. In my final day in Montevideo, I have decided to steer away from writing a traditional blog post and have instead compiled a list of what I have learned in Uruguay.

1. Trying New Things Whether it’s accidentally eating cow intestine because you don’t know the translation or learning how to prepare mate, travel is exciting! Travel is all about putting yourself into new situations and turning them into unforgettable opportunities.

2. Language Immersion Shadow Day was truly the day I was able to put my language skills to the test, and the results were positive! I have seen more improvement with my Spanish in the last two weeks than in the last year of high school Spanish. Immersion is truly the best, and most enjoyable way to improve your language abilities.

3. There is a Difference Between Bad and Different In America, bad and different are often used synonymously; however, being here has taught me this is far from the truth. Los Trebles, a community center in a low-income area in Montevideo, is labeled as bad simply because it is different. In reality, Los Treboles is a family of community members who don’t live at a standard considered normal in our society. We need not be quick to automatically label this as bad, or slap on America’s definition of different. Different can mean a different way of life, a different educational system, or different personal values. Whatever the case may be, it is important to understand others’ perspectives before judging through your own.

4. It’s all About the Little Things I did not come to Uruguay to take pictures for my Instagram feed or to include it on my college applications; I wanted to fully immerse myself in Uruguayan culture and compare it to my

own in America. This is why, for me, the best part of spending time with my host family was doing normal everyday things.

Going to the grocery store or talking for hours after dinner about our perspectives on the world gave me a chance to live like an Uruguayan. My favorite memory was celebrating after an Uruguay World Cup victory. After the game ended, my host family and I joined a party in the street. Although this was something so common for my host family to take part in, it is a memory that I will remember for my entire life.

5. Lifelong Friends Through travel, inseparable bonds are formed. Meeting people from new cultures, whether across the US or world, gives you the opportunity to connect with others who have different life experiences. By listening to their stories and understanding their world views, your connections become stronger and your friendships flourish. I know that I will keep in touch with my new friends; through them, the world has become more accessible and closer.

6. Hearing New Perspectives The world can simply not be taught through a textbook; history and culture can only truly be learned when you get out of your element and discover what is around you. Everyone has their own unique perspective shaped by their ideas, moral code, and family background. Travel is the only way to truly learn and experience these perspectives first hand.

7. Appreciating Life Throughout this trip, I have constantly reminded myself that I need to take it all in because I will never have an opportunity like this again. Traveling here has given me a newfound appreciation

for everything I have the chance to do, and everyone I have the chance to meet. I am grateful, not only for this opportunity to travel, but also for the chance to be here - alive and present.

8. We’re all Human From the crazy drivers in Montevideo and the calm farmers in the countryside to me, a USA Youth Ambassador, I have learned that we are not as unalike as we may think. Traveling makes life become personal. People should be our most treasured gifts in life, so go meet them! Develop a love for other cultures, religions and lifestyles; teach others that we are all one too. With this in mind, we can change the world - one traveling peacemaker at a time.

Cuba Opens Its Heart and Doors

W

hen we first heard that America was relaxing travel restrictions to Cuba in 2016, this seemed like an ideal opportunity to visit a country that most Americans hadn’t had a chance to visit in our lifetimes. Although some travel restrictions have become tightened, we started planning for a truly unique family trip for July, just before both our kids go off to college.

One of the easiest ways to visit Cuba is by taking a cruise out of Miami. The ship would dock in Havana for two full days, allowing us the chance to spend some quality time exploring, and seeing how Cubans live day to day. Traveling by cruise wasn’t exactly staying IN Cuba, but it was as close as we were able to get without going through a lot of bureaucratic hoops.

Theoretically, the only way an American can enter Cuba is by having a “state sponsor-approved tour”. Typically this means that most people would book a tour through the cruise, but that means a group tour of 40-60 people in a bus. We like to be more adventurous and flexible than a large group tour, so we organized a private tour through a company we heard about and booked a full day and night with a private guide and a tour customized just for our family!

Our guide was a former history teacher in Havana, and she was able to give as much detail about areas within Havana and Cuba that we were interested in. Not only did we walk throughout Old Havana learning how people lived and worked, but visited museums and revolutionary sites.

The government takes 90% ownership of whatever people own (businesses, etc), except their homes and cars (cars are too expensive for all but the wealthiest).

But people have figured out a loophole.

If they run a business inside their home, then the owner keeps 100% ownership to themselves. This leads to people running small stores and restaurants (called “paladars”) inside the first floor of their homes! Delicious Cuban food, and unique Cuban items (woodworks,

etc) can be found throughout the narrow streets of Havana.

After a few hours walking around Havana, we were escorted to a classic 1954 Cadillac for seeing some of the areas outside of Havana. Most private tours offer some kind of ride in a classic American car with a driver who is dedicated for the day and night. This is definitely not offered in most of the cruise tours! What is Cuba most known for? Cuban cigars of course! So we headed to the outskirts to the official Cuban Cigar factory, La Corona, which makes ALL the Cuban cigar brands. We didn’t realize that every Cuban cigar comes from this factory, and based on the size, strength, shape and quality… is given the brand name (Cohiba, Montecristo, Partagas, etc). Most cigar rollers have worked there over 20 years, and cigar aficionados will often request to purchase only the cigars made by (for example) Worker #20, or Worker #39. The factory is kept at a temperature of about 85 degrees, and 85% humidity, to ensure the tobacco leaves remain supple… and the factory hot, humid, and sweaty! None of us smoke, but considering we saw the cigars being made, touched and smelled the leaves, and watched how intricately they were made, we each bought a few to bring home! Seeing how each one is handmade, no wonder the costs even in Cuba are $7-15 per cigar (and many more times than outside the country).

At night we headed out to the Buena Vista Social Club, a club made famous

by Cuban musicians during the 1960’s, and bursting with Cuban flavor. Mojitos, daiquiris, beer, food, and boisterous music and dancing was the order of the evening. It reminded us of Ricky Ricardo’s Club Babalu from “I Love Lucy”, and the energy was pulsating off the walls! Out of 150 people in the club, we were the only Americans! And that was really what was most unique about Cuba for us. We’ve traveled quite a bit, but this is one of the only countries, that had zero American tourism influence.

way. So refreshing! It’s what traveling abroad must have been like in the 1930’s or 40’s, before airplanes opened up the world to expanded tourism.

Ernest Hemingway is revered in Cuba, and almost everywhere we’d go, there would be a notice of “Ernest Hemingway stayed here”, or “Hemingway drank at this bar” (there were quite a few of those!). We also drank mojitos where they were invented at Bodeguita de Medio, and had daiquiris at their place of origin, the Floridita. These places have gotten a little touristy, but the imagery is powerful.

With a car at our disposal, we also had the opportunity to visit the Christ of Havana statue, Cristo de la Habana, overlooking the city and Fusterlandia, a neighborhood that was turned into a work of mosaic art.

The people are friendly, excited to try out English, and welcome Americans to their country. Cuba is also incredibly safe for tourists, with almost no crime to report of any kind. As Cuba slowly makes its way back to re-entry into the larger world of travelers, this should be on people’s list as a destination to see… before Western influence takes root, and changes Cuba for good. We loved it, and hope to return one day.

Apple Pie with Crumb Topping

Make the topping first: • 3/4 cup of sugar • 1 cup of flour • 1/2 cup butter (softened) Mix all together to form a dough, I use a ziplock bag and knead it till mixed. Refrigerate while you peel and cut the apples so the dough firms up.

Dust pie pan with a little flour and add your favorite pie crust. (I use a ready-made one.)

Pie Filling 8-10 medium size apples peeled and sliced very thin.

I use two different kinds- one that is tart and one sweet (I decide based on which apples look fresh and firm.)

Dust the inside of the pie crust with a little bit of cinnamon sugar (about a teaspoon) Layer in your apples, first one kind, then the other. Dust with another teaspoon of cinnamon sugar and a teaspoon of butter shaved and sprinkled on top of the apples.

Keep layering - apples, cinnamon sugar, butter, piling the apples high in the pan.

When your pie has a heaping crown of apples push them down a little with your hands leaving some nooks and crannies to catch the crumb topping.

Take the topping dough out of the refrigerator and crumble it directly on the pie top catching and tucking in the pieces that escape.

Bake the pie at 325 degrees for about an hour or until the topping is a nice golden brown.

Don’t forget a drip pan under your pie plate.

Serve warm with Vanilla Bean ice cream, or my favorite; for breakfast with coffee.
