Story by Kara Navolio, Northgate resident since 1991

The Nunez family moved to Northgate about one year ago and chose this neighborhood for many of the same reasons that others have: good schools, proximity to trails and parks, and friendly neighbors.

Jordan, a Bay Area native, and Becky met in downtown Walnut Creek in 2010. They quite literally bumped into each other and subsequently began a conversation. Becky, originally from Des Plaines, IL but more recently living in Colorado, was visiting the Bay Area while interviewing for a job in San Francisco. They exchanged numbers that night, but Becky returned to Colorado for the holidays and awaited news about the job.

Two months later, in January 2011, Becky, who has a degree in Communications from the University of Colorado at Boulder, was on her way to California to begin her new job writing proposals for an architectural/engineering firm. She chose a small apartment in Pleasant Hill that was close to BART. She and Jordan had their first official date at Chevy’s Fresh Mex in Pleasant Hill soon after she moved in. “A couple of days later, Jordan invited me over to his apartment for dinner,” recalls Becky. “Since I was brand new to the area, I just plugged his address into my GPS – “Turn left. Your destination is on your right.” Turns out I had moved to the apartment complex across the street from Jordan! I thought to myself, “This could either be really good or really bad.” Long story short, it ended up being really good!”

The couple, who both enjoy hiking and snow sports, were engaged at Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe in 2013. They exchanged their vows overlooking beautiful Lake Tahoe a year later in Tahoe City.

Jordan grew up in Antioch, CA and remembers when it was a small town with mostly green pastures. He earned his degree in Business Administration from California State University, Chico and began working for Dawson Electric, electrical contractors serving the Bay Area. Twelve years later, he is now a co-owner of the business.

The couple began a family in 2015. Ashton is now 3 ½ and enjoys soccer at Arbolado Park through the City of Walnut Creek Recreation program. He’s also trying out other sports, attending Skyhawks Tot Sports, also through Walnut Creek Rec. Addie arrived in 2016; the two-year-old enjoys gymnastics. And in May of last year, only weeks after moving into the Northgate neighborhood, the couple welcomed baby number three, Aria, who is about to turn one! Becky is now a stay-at-home mom to her busy tots. They enjoy being so close to Arbolado Park, the trails, shopping, and the kids’ preschool. They love doing all things outdoors, like camping and hiking; Jordan especially loves hiking the Castle Rock trail.

While Jordan is a die-hard Bay Area sports fan (Giants and 49ers), Becky loves her Chicago teams, the Cubs and the Bears. Both, however, root for the Golden State Warriors. Becky and Jordan had a chance to get away from the busy family life this past October for a University of Michigan vs. University of Wisconsin football game where they also enjoyed the Midwest fall foliage and apple cider and donut tasting at a cider mill. The Tahoe area is one of their favorite vacation spots, and they plan on spending more time there as they just purchased a home in the Truckee/Tahoe Donner area with Becky’s parents to be used for family get-aways. “We are looking forward to many wonderful family memories at our Truckee house!” says Becky.

Layla

The family also includes adorable Layla, a 5-year-old pointer/pit bull mix that Becky and Jordan adopted in 2014 as a puppy. Becky says, “I was determined to get a puppy, so I went online to preview puppies available for adoption at ARF. I came across “Candy,” who reminded me so much of my dog growing up. I went to ARF to meet her and immediately fell in love with her. The next day, I stood outside of ARF for a few hours before the doors were opened to make sure no one else would adopt her and took her home that day.” They changed her name to Layla, after the Eric Clapton song.

The young family would like to thank the neighborhood for being so welcoming; they have met many neighbors while out on walks and many came over when they first moved in to introduce themselves. If you see them out and about, be sure to say hello!
