And once they hit, there won’t be any “barequipment. It’s supply and demand like always. Except for one thing…

Resident Feature
Meet the Nunez Family: A Young Family New to Northgate By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991
T
he Nunez family moved to Northgate about one year ago and chose this neighborhood for many of the same reasons that others have: good schools, proximity to trails and parks, and friendly neighbors. Jordan, a Bay Area native, and Becky met in downtown Walnut Creek in 2010. They quite literally bumped into each other and subsequently began a conversation. Becky, originally from Des Plaines, IL but more recently living in Colorado, was visiting the Bay Area while interviewing for a job in San Francisco. They exchanged numbers that night, but Becky returned to Colorado for the holidays and awaited news about the job. Two months later, in January 2011, Becky, who has a degree in Communications from the University of Colorado at Boulder, was on her way to California to begin her new job writing proposals for an architectural/engineering firm. She chose a small apartment in Pleasant Hill that was close to BART. She and Jordan had their first official date at Chevy’s Fresh Mex in Pleasant Hill soon after she moved in. “A couple of days later, Jordan invited me over to his apartment for dinner,” recalls Becky. “Since I was brand new to the area, I just plugged his address into my GPS – “Turn left. Your destination is on your right.” Turns out I had moved to the apartment complex across the street from Jordan! I thought to myself, “This could either be really good or really bad.” Long story short, it ended up being really good!”
The Nunez family gets into the Halloween spirit with Sesame Street themed costumes
The couple began a family in 2015. Ashton is now 3 ½ and enjoys soccer at Arbolado Park through the City of Walnut Creek Recreation program. He’s also trying out other sports, attending Skyhawks Tot Sports, also through Walnut Creek Rec. Addie arrived in 2016; the two-year-old enjoys gymnastics. And in May of last year, only weeks after moving into the Northgate neighborhood, the couple welcomed baby number three, Aria, who is about to turn one! Becky is now a stay-at-home mom to her busy tots. They enjoy being so close to Arbolado Park, the trails, shopping, and the kids’ preschool. They love doing all things outdoors, like camping and hiking; Jordan especially loves hiking the Castle Rock trail. While Jordan is a die-hard Bay Area sports fan (Giants and 49ers), Becky loves her Chicago teams, the Cubs and the Bears. Both, however, root for the Golden State Warriors. Becky and Jordan had a chance to get away from the busy family life this past October for a University of Michigan vs. University of Wisconsin football game
The couple, who both enjoy hiking and snow sports, were engaged at Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe in 2013. They exchanged their vows overlooking beautiful Lake Tahoe a year later in Tahoe City. Jordan grew up in Antioch, CA and remembers when it was a small town with mostly green pastures. He earned his degree in Business Administration from California State University, Chico and began working for Dawson Electric, electrical contractors serving the Bay Area. Twelve years later, he is now a co-owner of the business. 6

where they also enjoyed the Midwest fall foliage and apple cider and donut tasting at a cider mill. The Tahoe area is one of their favorite vacation spots, and they plan on spending more time there as they just purchased a home in the Truckee/Tahoe Donner area with Becky’s parents to be used for family get-aways. “We are looking forward to many wonderful family memories at our Truckee house!” says Becky. The family also includes adorable Layla, a 5-year-old pointer/pit bull mix that Becky and Jordan adopted in 2014 as a puppy. Becky says, “I was determined to get a puppy, so I went online to preview puppies available for adoption at ARF. I came across “Candy,” who reminded me so much of my dog growing up. I went to ARF to meet her and immediately fell in love with her. The next day, I stood outside of ARF for a few hours before the doors were opened to Becky and Jordan enjoying the University of make sure no one else would adopt her and took her home that day.” They changed Michigan football game last fall her name to Layla, after the Eric Clapton song. The young family would like to thank the neighborhood for being so welcoming; they have met many neighbors while out on walks and many came over when they first moved in to introduce themselves. If you see them out and about, be sure to say hello!

Jewel
Meet your forever friend at Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation, 2890 Mitchell Drive, Walnut Creek, during adoption hours: Noon to 6 pm Wednesday & Thursday, Noon to 7 pm Friday, and Noon to 6 pm Saturday & Sunday.
Three-year-old Pluto is a sweet, polite little guy. He is a little shy at first, but given some time, he will climb into your lap for pets. He would be a good fit for a mellow family that can give him lots of love. The adoption fee for puppies <6 months is $300, for adult dogs is $250, and includes a discount on the first six-week session of a manners class.
Would you like to be part of the heroic team that saves the lives of rescued dogs and cats? Can you share your talents to connect people and animals? ARF volunteers are making a difference! For more information see our website, www. arflife.org, or call (925) 256-1ARF.
Five-year-old Jewel is a warrior princess that has overcome some challenges in her life. She preciously walks up to friendly people and affectionately rubs against their legs when she’s comfortable. Although she enjoys being near people, she is still learning to trust petting and the attention she receives. She is eagerly looking forward to finding a gentle, patient adopter that can help her to feel safe and loved. Jewel would do best in a quiet home with someone that will take the time to help her become the gem that she is! The adoption fee for kittens <6 months $125 and for adult cats is $75.

KEEP PAYMENTS FROM RISING
If you want to get out from under high interest rate charges from credit cards, student loans, or other forms of debt, then a cash-out refinance might be the solution for you.
A great way to save money on your home loan is to refinance for a lower interest rate. Just a small drop in interest rate can lower your mortgage payment significantly.
Refinancing your home to take advantage of its equity can be a great way to get the funds you need for home improvements, retirement, vacations and more.
Do you plan to stay in your home for an extended period? If so, then refinancing to a fixed-rate mortgage is a great way to keep your payment from rising.

About Rats By Mike Scott, Honest Rodent Proofing
R
ats are incredibly hardy animals who have never shown any problem adjusting to change. Usually that change is the introduction of a new poison, as humans constantly work harder and harder to exterminate these animals. But perhaps no other animal resists such attempts better than the rat. Rather than looking for more powerful and potentially dangerous ways to kill rats, the only real answer to people’s conflicts with these animals is to alter the habitats in which they choose to live to make them less attractive and acceptable. Common conflicts and solutions Food: Rats will eat anything a human will, and more. But worse damage is done by their urine and feces, which are left behind on any uneaten food. Burrows: Although rats may create damage
with their burrowing, it’s usually more superficial than structural. Chewing: Since their front teeth grow all their lives rats, chew on things to keep them worn down. This can be dangerous when they gnaw on electrical wiring. Public Health: Rats can carry many diseases that are harmful to people. Tolerance Tolerating rats is not something many people want to do. For many reasons people and rats are unlikely to coexist peacefully. But coexist we will, as perhaps more than any other wild animal, rats have adapted to living among humans. That we do not generally tolerate their presence does not mean that we need to use dangerous and inhumane methods to destroy them—or accept a no-holds-barred way to controlling their numbers.
The best way to control rats is to discourage them from taking up residence in the first place. Typically, conditions that support high rat populations are left until there is a real crisis at hand. Then the poisons are used or trapping employed to reduce the population, only to leave unaddressed the cause of the problem in the first place. Any effort to limit rat populations must be followed by taking the necessary steps— exclusion and sanitation—to make sure the same problems never happen again. Identifying rat signs Inside • Gnawed holes up to two inches wide in baseboards or at doorframes (indicates they’ve been there a while). • Smudge marks (body oils) on walls. • Sounds of movement in walls and attics. • The family pet staring intently at a blank wall.
These are some of the most important decisions that you make in your lifetime.
Don’t make them alone. Consider working with a fiduciary.

Open Space
Spring,
Just Because By Nancy Dollard, Supervising Ranger, Open Space

s rangers in the Open Space, we spend the majority of our time interacting with the public by explaining environmental concepts and the science of what we see before us. We talk about how plants and animals live together each making life possible for the other. We discuss spreading seeds in many ways from blowing in the wind, hitchhiking on coyote fur, or traveling downstream in a seasonal creek. We are always looking for connections and the “why” of what is happening. I was traveling in Shell Ridge the other day because I had a report of a tree limb down, some homeowner action that was impacting the Open Space, and trying to plan for our next trail work. As I was looking at these individual issues it occurred to me that rangers might be exactly who was meant by people who can’t see the forest for the trees. We concentrate on the small picture. What type of tree is this? Is it native? Do any animals live in, on or under it? Early in our careers we all still took time to marvel at nature, but demands on our time can take that away if we aren’t careful. So my wish for you, neighbors of Shell Ridge, is take your time in nature this spring. Go into the Open Space to see the full farm ponds and trickling streams that are still running with water to fill up those ponds. The ground is covered with miner’s lettuce, buttercups, and woodland stars. The oaks and the buckeyes are leafing out and we soon will have the beautiful flower of the buckeye tree. If you’re really lucky you’ll see an adult coyote or bobcat out during unusual times of day searching for food to bring back to their den for their young. There is so much to see and appreciate just for being what it is.

Green Ideas
Walnut Acres Recycle Club & Zero Waste By Amy Golan, Resident since 2008, Owner of Planet Renu
A
s an eco-friendly business owner, I am concerned about the impact that society and all of our buying behaviors have on the environment and the earth. Everyone can do their part and working with large entities, such as a school, can be very impactful. I had the pleasure of meeting the ladies that run the Recycle Club at Walnut
Acres (WA) Elementary School when they reached out to me to help them create and offer Zero Waste Lunch alternatives for their school. This club is dynamically changing the way the school approaches trash, recycling & composting. I was so impressed, that I thought everyone should know about their positive efforts which can hopefully be duplicated by other schools. The two ladies that presently run the WA Recycle Club are Marci and Monique. Marci moved from Massachusetts four years ago and immediately took over the Recycle Club from its founder, Christianna Cohen, as she was transitioning out. Monique joined a few years later when her daughter started kindergarten after being inspired by one of her favorite environmentalists. She realized the best way to make a difference is to “think globally, act locally.” They have done a great job creating a school that is as zero waste as possible even recycling all markers through Crayola’s Color Cycle program. In addition to educating the students on recycling and setting up recycling bins around school, Marci and Monique realized that a few other issues needed to be tackled. One issue was that the recycling bins

inside the classroom were not making it to the recycling containers, and in fact, this recycling was being thrown in the trash. This ongoing problem in the school district relates to how the custodial contracts are written. To remedy this situation, they have the students transport the recycling in the blue bins to the recycling containers twice a week. To date, there has been some training by the district for the custodians to take care of the in-classroom recycling, but the students are still taking out the recycling. Another event that produces a lot of trash is parties- whether at home or at school. Think of all of the plastic or paper plates, plastic utensils, cups, tablecloths and water bottles that usually accompany festive gatherings and celebrations. So these ladies decided to reduce waste from parties and other celebrations by creating a reusable “Party Set.” To address the plastic water bottles,

Testimonial from a Resident
"We had a great experience with Jordan and his crew. I'm a stickler for communication. I always was able to contact Jordan by text or phone. He returned calls promptly which really helped our relationship. He also has a project manager who follows up on the progress. I remodeled a bathroom, two fireplaces, flooring, and new doors. The subs he uses are top quality and they were all polite and cleaned up daily. I have referred many friends and would not hesitate to use them again for another project." BT.W Danville, Ca

Discover & Go –
Free and discounted tickets to museums and more By Michael Beller, Community Library Manager at Ygnacio Valley Library
T they suggested that extra water not be provided for parties since the students bring their own water bottles to school and there are water fountains everywhere. To reduce the waste of plastic utensils, etc, they created the “Party Set” that consists of 30 reusable plates, bowls, cups, utensils (knife, fork & spoon) as well as a tablecloth. Walnut Acres has 3 “Party Sets” that can be borrowed by the classrooms and staff. The process to use these “Party Sets” is simple, including a signup form to reserve them and all sets need to be returned clean. These sets were graciously donated by Recycle Smart. Marci and Monique are excited to see this change at their school as even the teachers are using them for their teacher appreciation lunches. Walnut Acres also composts! Like many schools in our area, the Walnut Acres Gardeners put garden compost from their lovely school garden into the green bins at school, and the school cafeteria also composts all of the food waste created from school lunches. In the future, the school is working on plans for a working school food garden in which the compost can be used to help fertilize the food they grow.
his month’s library resource is Discover & Go. Discover & Go is a program provided by the Contra Costa County library that offers free and low-cost passes for museums, science centers, zoos, theatres, and other cultural destinations. All you need is your library card and you’re on your way. Last week, for example, my wife and I planned an outing to Napa. Before we left, we checked to see what Napa museums were available on Discover & Go. We have never heard of the di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, but there it was on the list of attractions. Curious, we decided that this would be a great adventure so we downloaded some Discover & Go tickets and got on the road. We were right. The museum is wonderfully interesting. Located in a lovely vineyard, the di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art is comprised of two buildings filled with a variety of art, and grounds filled with amazing sculptures. The cost of the adventure was free, except that we are certain to become regulars there. Other attractions include: The Asian Art Museum, the Legion of Honor, Safari West, the Blackhawk Museum, the California Academy of Sciences, and many more. To access the Discover & Go website and schedule an adventure of your own, take your library card to the following website:https://ccclib.discoverandgo.net/ If you have any problems, just contact your local librarian. We’re happy to help.
Their recent initiative is bringing the idea of the Zero Waste lunch to the students and their parents. Many families use reusable lunch bags and containers, but many do not, and the trash bins and recycling bins are full of used paper and plastic bags as well as packaging from chips and other pre-packaged goodies. The idea behind the Zero Waste lunch is to bring lunch to school and leave nothing behind. This is possible by packing lunch in a reusable lunch bag, in snack containers and lunch containers. Marci and Monique are partnering with Planet Renu to offer many eco-friendly products made from stainless steel, wheat straw (wheat straw containers are reusable, they look like plastic, but are compostable after years of use), compostable straws and Bee’s Wraps. Marci and Monique are also working with the school cafeteria to offer eco options for their cutlery and plates instead of plastic. It is exciting to see so many eco-friendly changes at Walnut Acres Elementary. I believe that if we adapt the motto “Be a Contributor, not a Consumer,” we can make great strides in reducing the amount of waste (plastic, trash, etc) that we produce. We all know it takes a village, but together we can start taking small steps towards making our world a better place.
