Meet the Einspahrs:
A family devoted to service and adventure
By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991
Faye and Matt met at a church in Walnut Creek. Their first date would set the stage for a life filled with adventure and a love of the outdoors. They went surfing in Pacifica, and after that first date they both knew that they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. They were married 18 months later in 2008.
Faye grew up just down the highway in Alamo. She attended college in Southern California at Azusa Pacific University. Matt grew up in Port Orchard, Washington (near Seattle); he was a Packers fan because most of his family was originally from Wisconsin. He came to California for college, attending UC Berkeley as a recruit for baseball. He played various infield positions for the Bears, and in his senior year he was Captain of the team, batting .313. During his summers he played in the Northwoods League earning the Sliver Slugger Award, team MVP and was a 2-time All-Star. Post college he went to play for an independent minor league. After one year, Matt decided to leave the baseball field and focus on a career and family.
Matt first became an EMT, then a paramedic working in Oakland. In 2009 he joined the Berkeley Fire Department as a firefighter and has been there ever since. He also coaches youth sports and was honored with the prestigious Positive Coaching Alliance award for his work in youth softball. He also enjoys running and surfing.
Faye works in fundraising, helping schools and local sports groups raise much needed funds. She and fellow Northgate resident Jenny Roy started the DREAM Committee at Valle Verde Elementary School, a committee that celebrates diversity and equity (DREAM stands for diversity, representation, equality, activism and multiculturalism). They recently hosted Valle Verde’s first ever Cultural Food Fair as an opportunity to share and celebrate the diversity of cultural backgrounds present at the school and in our neighborhood. Faye connects with a group of neighborhood women in a book club she started four years ago. Both Matt and Faye also volunteer in the classroom at Valle Verde and at their church.
The Einspahrs have three children who they model and teach their family motto to: “Be kind, be inclusive, be honest.” Avery (9) loves sports, plays the piano and performed in her first musical last fall. Following her parents’ example, she started a club called the Anti Bully Club to spread understanding and acceptance.
Jack is six and plays baseball and soccer and practices Tae kwon do. Joshua is three and keeps everyone running with his unstoppable energy and good humor. He’ll start t-ball this spring. Twelve-yearold Maverick, the family’s yellow lab, is doted on by all. Faye says, “Our three kids are adopted, and we feel so blessed to have formed our family this way. People will sometimes tell us our kids are lucky, but the truth is that we are far and away the lucky ones. It is the greatest honor of our lives to have the opportunity to parent these three amazing kids.”
Family time is often spent outdoors, exploring National Parks or hiking in our open space. During the pandemic they had a family camping trip on Mt. Diablo and visited many of the Bay Area’s outdoor parks and trails. Living in the Walnut Green subdivision, they love their

proximity to Arbolado Park and the trails and spend most summer afternoons at their neighborhood pool. They are fortunate to have great neighbors who plan block parties and some they even vacation with!
Last summer they enjoyed an action -packed trip to Montana riding horses, off-roading, floating the river and trying out ranch life. As Faye adds, “While we love exploring and traveling, we are always so happy to come home to Walnut Creek. We couldn’t imagine a better place to live.” We are fortunate to have this caring family as part of our community.

a new best friend at ARF in Walnut Creek! View available dogs and cats online or visit ARF in-person: Wednesday-Sunday, 12-6pm, with early-bird sign-in available on weekdays beginning at 9 am. Our team is excited to guide you in choosing a pet, share information about their history and behavior, and provide helpful resources. This process can take time—please allow 60-90 minutes for in-person appointments. Here are a few of our adorable animals looking for love:
Four-year-old Douglas is a fabulous, easygoing boy with a penchant for cuddles and loves. While he’s low-key, he also loves a good play session and won’t turn up his nose at some fun and a good romp! This handsome boy has already started his doggie education and knows ‘sit’ and ‘shake’. He would love to continue stimulating his sharp mind and learning more tricks and obedience training, especially to earn tasty treats as this pup is highly food motivated. He would also love to get plenty of physical exercise and he will be a great buddy to encourage you to have a more active and healthy lifestyle. Your life will be so much better with Douglas in it, as he’s sure to make a loving, loyal, and life-enriching companion .He has a positive history with other dogs and currently weighs 52 pounds.
One-year-old Harlequin is an incredible young lady with a disposition beyond her age. This bubbly gal is like sunshine on four legs, and her soothing warmth is a joy to be around. She will endearingly and gently request pets and attention, and the soft, soulful look in her eyes will tell you how much she loves and appreciates you. She is also fun little lady who enjoys an energetic romp with doggy pal, and she’d appreciate an adopter who will provide her with plenty of play and adventure to accompany all the loves. Truly, Harlequin is a total gem of a dog who you do not want to miss! She currently weighs 43 pounds. Bonus: Harlequin’s adoption fee has been prepaid by a generous donor
ARF adoption fees: $250 for an adult dog, $375 for a puppy (<6 months), $150 for a special-needs dog, $200 for a special-needs puppy (<6 months), and $150 for a senior dog (7+ years). Adoption fees are waived for US military Veterans.

NORTHGATE LIVING CA 11 Charity Spotlight
Hello, my name is Gordon Reese, and I’m excited to take you on an exhilarating journey through the world of mountain biking with the Contra Costa Composite Mountain Bike Team. As a design build remodeler by day, I’ve channeled my passion for mountain biking into coaching on this team of riders from 6th through 12th grade, representing schools in Walnut Creek and the surrounding areas.
Being an avid mountain biker and racer myself, I bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team. As a coach, I am dedicated to shaping the next generation of mountain bikers and guiding them to reach their full potential. But I am not alone; our entire coaching team is passionate about helping each rider thrive on the bike and achieve their personal best every step of the way.
As part of the NICA league (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) we compete against other schools within a 75-mile radius. The league is nationwide, with local chapters of teams competing in most states around the country. We take pride in being a

competitive force, but our focus is always on supporting each rider to participate at whatever level they determine. Whether they want to be a race winner or simply enjoy the team comradery, improved health, and self-confidence that come with developing mountain biking skills, we welcome all riders to participate in the way they choose. The ultimate goal for our team is to have fun, and we know that every rider can achieve that with the support of their teammates and coaches.
The NICA mountain biking league distinguishes itself as a sport that prioritizes inclusivity, offering opportunities for every rider to participate in events. Unlike other sports that may have limited spots or require players to sit on the bench, NICA events are designed to be accessible to all riders, regardless of their skill level. This approach creates a welcoming atmosphere where riders can develop their abilities and enjoy the sport without the stress of competition. The league’s commitment to inclusivity is exemplified by the Contra Costa Mountain Bike Team, which strives to provide a safe and supportive environment for riders to grow and thrive in the sport.
The team’s first competition of the season was held February 18-19 in Modesto. The course didn’t have many hills, but the twists and turns challenged even the most skilled riders. It was a great opportunity to see how we measured up against other teams in the league and represent our school and community.
Join us on this adventure of a lifetime with the Contra Costa Composite Mountain Bike Team and our amazing coaches. Visit our website at https://cccmtb.com/ to learn more about the team and how you can get involved. Together, we will provide support to the youth of today by empowering the next generation of mountain bikers, thus creating a lasting impact within the local chapter of the NICA league.

Top Five Reasons Why You Should Switch to Waterless Auto Detailing with No-H2O
By Brian Stranko, Owner, No-H2O Auto Detailing
Waterless Auto Detailing is quite new. Some of you may have never even heard of it. Like any new service, it raises questions, especially since it applies to something as expensive as your car! Will it scratch my car or eat away the paint? Does it use nasty chemicals? How in the world does it work? Does it even work at all? Below I answer these questions and more while giving you the top five most compelling reason, to give waterless and No-H2O a try.
1.
We Come to You
No-H2O is mobile. We come to your house, your business, your fitness center, the Boundary Oak Golf Course – wherever it is most convenient for you. We save you the time and hassle of heading out to a car wash facility, and, while we detail your car, you can keep working, take care of the kids, finish your workout, beat your handicap on the golf course, or even take a nap!
2. We Help You Save California Water
We all know that we have been in a drought. And, despite recent rains, most of the state, including our area, remains classified as in drought conditions. Together, each time we detail your car, we will save, on average, 35 gallons of water. If all Californians were to switch to waterless for a year, we’d save enough water to provide for the nearly 1 million Californians who go without safe drinking water each year!
3.
We Produce 5-Star Results
Our products are not only scratch-free, but they also produce a shine and level of cleanliness that leave customers wowed and that last longer than typical detailing results. Our crew prides itself on surpassing expectations by sticking to a proven process and conducting a multi-point inspection to ensure that they don’t miss anything.
4. Our Products Are Eco-Friendly
We don’t only care about water. We are wedded to a philosophy of sustainability, health, and safety. We use a series of proprietary mists that emulsify your car’s dirt and grime but cause no harm to your vehicle and are safe for people, pets, and the planet. What’s more, because we use no hoses, electrical cords, or massive foam clouds, we create no runoff or mess.
5. You Get an Automatic Polish with
Your Wash
Our No-H2O formula includes a polymer finish that allows us to wash your car with one specialized cloth and immediately after polish it with another.
The future of auto detailing is waterless. It’s good for the environment (especially in California), produces amazing results, and allows us to bring an eco-friendly, mess-free service to you.

My JourneyCrochet
By Andrew Halverson, Resident since 2010
It all started on a rainy Saturday in December 2021. I was in 5th grade at Walnut Acres Elementary. My friend and I decided to head over to the Northgate High School Winter Craft Fair to look for Christmas presents for our families. As we browsed, I noticed a few vendors selling little crochet creations - things like donuts, apples, cupcakes, all made out of yarn. At the time I didn’t really know what crochet was. I have always been a very creative kid and like making things, so I was curious. I asked the vendor what she was selling and she answered with, “ I’m selling crochet.” Instantly I wanted to learn all about crochet, but it took a long time to get to where I am today.
At the beginning, I had no knowledge of what I was doing. I had to borrow a crochet hook from a neighbor and another friend of my mom’s gave me a lot of hat yarn. This was a problem because the crochet hook I borrowed was way smaller than the yarn size, so trying to practice was very difficult. Fortunately, Christmas was coming and the main present I wanted was this crochet starter kit I found online. On Christmas day I was so happy to unwrap this crochet kit. With all of my essentials, I was ready; I made my first crochet creation: a pink glazed donut with sprinkles.
That first creation took me a while. Like anything, the first time you try something new, it was a little tricky. I found a tutorial on YouTube and followed along with the instructions. I would press pause and rewind to make sure that I got it right. I made some mistakes, but once I finished it I felt so good! I never knew that this donut would be followed up with so many other crochet masterpieces!
Soon I was making frequent trips to the store to buy more yarn and other essentials. I started brainstorming ideas for what else I could make. I was inspired by videos on YouTube and crochet books I borrowed from the library. I followed up with more crochet creations. In a few months I had gotten the hang of it and had made enough inventory to start selling my creations. I sold some to friends at school, and set up a stand on the side of the road near my house, with lemonade and cookies. Finally I landed on an amazing idea: What if I sold my crochet on my mom’s Instagram account!? My mom and I made a new account on her phone and there the true business started.
My first big sale was during Easter. I made these super cute Easter baskets filled with a bunny, Easter eggs and a baby chick.
This was very big for me, I sold 9 of these baskets which I sold for $15 each. That meant that I made $135 just that Easter. This gave me a huge boost of confidence, so I kept with it. I made new projects like crocheted succulents and fruit. I also made new seasonal themes for my crochet like a back-to-school line, a Halloween line, and a Christmas collection. I got so many orders, and my business kept soaring. People started sending me requests for things to make like Mandalorian characters and crochet cats that looked like their real pets. These requests are fun
challenges because I get new ideas and I have to discover a way to make them. Sometimes I’ll come up with the pattern myself, and other times I’ll search online for a pattern.
To this day I still am excited to crochet. There is still so much to learn! I love getting special orders. This hobby changed my life in so many ways.

Taking a HikeFour ways interest Rate Hikes Can Affect Your Finances
By Kmotion on behalf of Chris J. Held, CFP ®, Private Wealth Advisor, Element Wealth Management
Unlessyou live on another planet, you are fully aware of this thing called inflation — whether you’re at the grocery store, a gas station, buying clothes online, hiring a contractor or doing almost any other thing that requires spending money for something. Earlier this year, the Federal Reserve started raising interest rates to rein in inflation, which reached another 40-year high in June. By raising rates, the Fed hopes to slow the economy and inflation. That’s because as borrowing becomes more expensive, consumers tend to reduce spending. The drop in demand for goods eventually leads to lower prices.
The Fed doesn’t set interest rates on credit cards, mortgages, auto loans, and savings accounts, but its actions influence those rates. Here are four ways interest-rate hikes can affect your finances and how to deal with the impact:
Credit Cards
Most cards charge a variable rate that’s tied to the bank’s prime rate — the rate banks charge their best customers (many consumers pay an additional rate on top of prime, based on their credit profile.) Banks typically raise their prime rate quickly after the Fed boosts its key rate. HIKING TIP: It may take a couple of statements before you notice the impact of a rate increase. Start paying down any balance before rates get much higher, focusing on the card with the highest rate first.
Mortgages
If you have a fixed-rate mortgage, your monthly payments will stay the same. If you refinanced over the last few years and locked in a rate in the 2% to 3% range, that was really good timing. However, if you have an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM), you may be faced with having to make larger payments, depending on the terms of your loan. HIKING TIP: If you have an ARM, budget for higher payments. Or, if you anticipate buying a home within the next year or two, take steps to improve your credit score so you can secure a lower interest rate.
Home Equity Line of Credit
This allows you to borrow against the equity in your home as
needed, usually at a variable interest rate. Borrowers typically pay only interest on the amount borrowed for the first 10 years, and thereafter must repay interest and the principal over the next, say, 15 or 20 years. Your Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) rate can adjust monthly or quarterly. So, if you have an outstanding balance, your payments will likely go up when the Fed implements a rate hike. HIKING TIP: If you have a HELOC, budget for higher payments. You can also pay down your HELOC balance to reduce the interest you pay, or talk to your lender about options, such as refinancing.
Auto Loans
It’s already more expensive to buy a new or used car, as their prices have increased dramatically over the last two years. This is due to a number of reasons that have resulted in supply not keeping up with demand. Unfortunately, if you’re planning on financing the purchase of a vehicle in the near future, you’ll need to add in the higher cost of borrowing. HIKING TIP: Make a down payment of at least 20% of the purchase of a new car, and no less than 10% for a used car. A sizable down payment will lower your monthly payments and could help secure a lower interest rate.

Explore NapaFood & Wine Tasting Experiences
By Lisa Crossett, Resident since 2001
There is an undeniable vibe in Napa Valley of casual sophistication. The soil is the foundation of great wine. The character and charm of Yountville, St. Helena or Calistoga embody the soul of wine country. Experiencing the vibe of the valley through reserving a wine and food pairing experience is a unique, memorable, and extremely enjoyable activity for food and wine enthusiasts.
Hubby and I have continued our monthly jaunts to Napa Valley to explore this local jewel destination. With my inaugural article for Northgate Living in October, I shared three incredible wineries that offer a bespoke food and wine experience. You can read online at www.northgatelivingca.com under the October issue to learn more about B Cellars, Handwritten Wines and Sequoia Grove Winery. Since then, I have three more fantastic wineries to share with all of you.
Trefethen is one of Napa Valley’s pioneering wineries that practices sustainable farming, precise winemaking, and gracious hospitality. We had a curated tour of the property and history of the winery while ultimately being seated at a poolside table for an extraordinary food and wine experience. We started with a spicy eggplant dumpling paired with a dry Riesling and red kuri squash soup with a perfectly buttery chardonnay. Next, we tasted a cabernet franc, merlot, and reserve cabernet. The pairings were phenomenal, which included crispy brioche with sage compound butter and a fresh fig along with a brown butter almond biscuit with mushroom mouse and handmade beef jerky. I highly encourage you to put this on your “must go” list. (www.trefethen.com)
Clif Family in St. Helena is owned by the folks who create Clif Bar. Clif Family is guided by their values to sustain the planet through organic farming methods. They strive to have an immense enjoyment of wine, food, and connection. Right when we walked through the door, this imprint was quite prevalent. Our wine host Tyler was so welcoming and started us off with a glass of tasty chardonnay before delivering a beautiful plate of small bites to pair with our wines. Our small bites comprised of a lamb meatball, imported prosciutto shaped into a flower with spiced almonds, cowgirl creamery red hawk with house made fig jam and a gougere with gruyere and mushroom. We enjoyed the Croquet, Cold Springs, and Cima cabernet sauvignon wines – all were simply divine. Next time you are in St. Helena, plan a visit to Clif Family. (www.cliffamily.com)
Priest Ranch tasting room in Yountville is a bit of uncommon Napa that is a comfortable and sophisticated space to enjoy fantastic wines and unique food pairings. During the January storms, we ventured to this beautiful winery with another couple to celebrate a special birthday and chose the “Bacon and Wine Experience”. We started with a brut rose to kick off the day with a toast to the birthday boy. The individual plates of flavored bacon arrived, and our eyes immediately lit up. The plate comprised of “Chinese 5 spice BBQ”, “Honey Mustard”, “Spicy Tamarind” and “Black Pepper Strawberry Fig” and each was paired with a tasty cabernet sauvignon – “2019 Double Barrel”, “2019 Cabernet Sauvignon”, “2018 Peacemaker” and “2015 Coach Gun”. This is a concealed gem that can’t be hidden anymore. (www.priestranchwines. com)
With Spring around the corner, it is a perfect time to visit Napa Valley. I encourage you to make your reservation a few weeks ahead of your visit. Cheers!
