As winter is turning to spring, I have been enjoying hiking all around our Walnut Creek open space trails searching for this year’s first wild flowers and letting nature fill my quarantined mind with beauty and hope. We’ve already had plenty of rainbows, and hopefully soon more opportunities to see the people we love. This month we are so pleased to introduce you to the Farahbakhsh family. They have lived in the Rancho Paraiso neighborhood for 10 years now with their three children and three dogs. I hope you will enjoy getting to know them. We’ve also got some great expert articles and resident content to let you know what’s going on around the neighborhood. We are dedicated to sharing your stories and interests. If there is anything you would like to share with our community, or see in our magazine, please don’t hesitate to email me at knavolio@ bestversionmedia.com

Resident Feature
Meet the Farahbakhsh Family: “Kindness, inclusion, respect above all else” By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991
T
orrey and Bejan met through their sisters, who were friends. They started dating in 1992. “One of our sweetest memories is when I graduated from cosmetology school,” says Torrey. “That weekend Bejan asked my parents’ permission to marry me. Bright and early the next morning, Bejan asked to take me for a walk on the beach, he got down on one knee and asked me if I would marry him and the rest is history.” They married in November 2000 and just celebrated their 20th anniversary. Both Torrey and Bejan attended Chabot College in Hayward, CA. Torrey went on to pursue a modeling career, which allowed her to travel all over the world for about 15 years. She later attended the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Santa Monica, CA where she earned her license in cosmetology. Bejan went onto own and operate many Arco AM PM gas stations. Over his 25 years in the business he has built gas stations from the ground up, done major remodels and won franchise of the year. He currently manages 16 gas stations for Arco AM PM and enjoys team building, providing a wonderful customer experience and running top performing stations. The
hard-working Bejan also recently began an new venture as a co-owner of a cannabis beverage company called Spacestation. Spacestation currently manufactures some of the top cannabis brands in California. He believes cannabis infused beverages will play a big role in the cannabis industry. The Farahbakhsh family includes three children who have all attended Seven Hills School in Walnut Creek. The oldest, Javad, is 19. The family moved from Roseville to Walnut Creek when he was 5. After attending Seven Hills through 8th grade, he graduated from De La Salle High School and now attends St. Mary’s College in Moraga. You can also find Javad helping shoppers at our local Whole Foods Market where he has worked since 2019. Kaveh, 15, is a sophomore at De La Salle High School. He loves to bake, some of his specialties being Key Lime Pie and Coconut Cake. He also enjoys bike riding and spending time with family and friends. Bella is 11 and in 6th grade at the Seven Hills School. She enjoys fashion and sewing, painting and watching shows on Nexflix. A crew of 3 dogs rounds out the Farahbakhsh family. Biscuit, an 8-yearold Bichon Frise, is the head of the pack, acting as the fierce protector of

all. Toby is a 6-year-old Cockapoo who loves to cuddle, and Daisy, a 1 ½-year-old Teacup Yorkie, is a sweet young lady with a big appetite. “She can eat her two older brothers under the table,” says Torrey. The Farahbakhsh family has lived in the Rancho Paraiso neighborhood for 10 years. “We have always loved this neighborhood,” says Torrey. “Before we lived here we would drive up Arbolado Drive and hope to one day buy a home up here to raise our family ….We love the beauty that comes with living in this community, the open spaces, the peace
and quiet, and beautiful Mt. Diablo. We feel incredibly blessed to live in such a beautiful place surrounded by nature. We have great neighbors, and we look out for one another.” They enjoy annual family vacations each summer. Last year’s planned trip to Bora Bora was cancelled due to the pandemic. But in 2019 they had a 3-week trip to Istanbul, the Greek islands and Rome. This year they hope to be able to travel to Dubai. They enjoy experiencing different cultures and love to visit new and exciting places. The Farahbakhsh family puts inclusion and respect above all else. They teach their children “that love always wins and to always carry kindness in your heart.” During this challenging past year, this is a message we can all agree with. They are eager to get to know more families and build a stronger community. Take time to say hello when you see them in the neighborhood.

Wildfire Preparedness By Judy Caponigro, Northgate CERT Team, Resident since 2016
A
s scary as it is, wildfire season will be upon us in the next few months. Catastrophic wildfires continue to increase each year so it is important to make sure you and your family are protected. CAL FIRE encourages all residents to take the necessary steps to be ready for a wildfire. Their “Ready, Set, Go!” preparedness information can be found at https://www.readyforwildfire.org/ prepare-for-wildfire/ready-set-go/.
Stay Safe and Healthy Out There. Your Northgate-Area CERT Team If you are interested in learning more about CERT and/or how to become a volunteer, please visit our website at www.walnut-creek. org/cert.
Be READY: Create and maintain defensible space and harden your home against flying embers. Get SET: Prepare your family and home ahead of time for the possibility of having to evacuate. Ensure you have a plan of what to take and where to go – evacuation plans will be different this year due to COVID-19. Ask friends or relatives outside your area if you would be able to stay with them, should the need arise. If you do need to evacuate and plan to stay with friends or relatives, ask first if they have symptoms of COVID-19 or have people in their home at higher risk for serious illness. If that is the case, make other arrangements. Check with hotels, motels and campgrounds to learn if they are open. Also get set by learning about Walnut Creek’s Emergency Plan by visiting https://www.walnut-creek.org/home/ showdocument?id=21392. This document contains a detailed plan for City employees and local government staff to assist in their operations during an emergency. Be ready to GO!: When wildfire strikes, go early for your safety. Take the evacuation steps necessary to give your family and home the best chance of surviving a wildfire. CAL FIRE has created a series of “Ready, Set, Go!” videos that can be viewed at www.youtube.com/CALFIRE. In addition, CAL FIRE has a “Ready for Wildfire” app where you can sign-up for text alerts. ARE YOU AN
H
IDEAL TEAM PLAYER?
ave you ever wondered what makes a person easy to work with? I’m convinced that there are three required virtues that make someone an ideal team player. The most important of those values is humility. The ultimate foundation of being a team player is a person being willing and able to put the team’s interests ahead of his or her own. Only a truly humble person can do this effectively. Most people recognize and define humility by contrasting it with arrogance, which, to an extent, is accurate. People who are boastful, proud, egotistical and over-confident are certainly not humble, and they are poison on a team. Whether we’re talking about Little League Baseball, corporate leadership or emergency response, team members with big egos tend to bring down team performance by distracting attention away from the collective goals of the team and demotivating peers who resent their excessive need for attention. But some team members who are not arrogant lack humility, even if others around them don’t see it. Many of these people are beloved for their selflessness, modesty and support for others, but can’t be described as humble because they have an inaccurate, deflated understanding of their own talents and abilities. They hurt their teams by failing to contribute at the level that they could. But that’s not as bad as the people who, like them, discount their abilities, but don’t support and encourage their
By Patrick Lencioni, founder and president, The Table Group
peers. These may be the most dangerous kind of “non-humble” team players. The second virtue that is required of an ideal team player is hunger, the desire to work hard, make a difference and get things done. It’s not hard to understand why being hungry makes someone an asset on a team; a complacent person rarely makes a team great. However, hunger alone is not a good thing for a team, as it can be directed toward the benefits of the individual more than the team. Only when a person’s drive is applied to benefits of the greater good does hunger become a team asset. The third and final virtue of an ideal team player is something I call smarts. It has nothing to do with intelligence, however, but is all about social awareness and interpersonal common sense. Ideal team players, in addition to being humble and hungry, know how to understand their colleagues and work with them effectively. They can read a room and understand non-verbal cues, avoiding unnecessary problems that socially awkward people often create. Now, you may be asking, is an ideal team player perfect? Of course not. Even the best team player is going to have a tough day or week or moment from time to time, but those that work to develop their humility, hunger and people smarts will have a serious advantage on teams and in life. Other Resources: Pat’s Ted Talk on becoming an ideal team player: www.ted.com/talks/patrick_lencioni_are_you_an_ideal_team_player The Ideal Team Player Self-Assessment: www.tablegroup.com/books/ideal-team-player/self-assessment/ Patrick Lencioni was named in Fortune magazine as one of the “ten new gurus you should know.” His passion for organizations and teams is reflected in his writing, speaking and executive consulting. Reflections
Silver Linings By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991
I
’m pretty sure I am not alone in finding it unbelievable that a year after the first shelter in place order, we are still mostly staying home, still dealing with a pandemic, still wondering when it will all be over. While we wait for answers and vaccines I want to take some time to reflect on the silver linings of the past year.
Nature – I found that a daily walk, hike or
People – I realized how much I need other
new ways people celebrated birthdays, graduations and other special events. The drive by graduation ceremonies warmed my heart last spring. Instead of a birthday celebration in Napa, my husband put on an “Around the world” wine tasting for our daughter right in the backyard. We “traveled” from Champagne to Tuscany to Napa to Bordeaux, a birthday she will never forget. Instead of a 30th birthday party for our son, his fiancé planned a scavenger hunt around San Francisco with videotaped
people. I rediscovered the joy of a phone call with a friend or family member. I found that I made time for FaceTime or Zoom calls with people who don’t live near me, connecting with those who I may have been too busy to stay in touch with. I spent a lot of quality time with my grown children, more than we would have under normal times. I found ways to enjoy friends outdoors, on the trails, at parks, or around the fire pit. I love the way people sewed masks for others, cheered on the front line workers, supported local businesses.
bike ride soothes the soul as well as provide exercise, a much more enjoyable routine than going to the gym. I discovered new trails, used the time for meditation and in the process got more physically fit than I have been in a long time.
Celebrations – I enjoyed seeing the
clues from family and friends. Instead of a 60th bash for my husband, I created a scrapbook with messages from everyone in his life, which is something he will cherish far beyond the pandemic. Instead of a New Year’s Eve party, we sent off “A Party in a Box” to be enjoyed during our Zoom party with Quarantini supplies so all the guests could create their own cocktail and share in the games. Others have created game nights, Zoom baby showers, Trivia nights and so many other unique ways to be together to celebrate a year’s worth of milestones.
Downtime – With fewer places to go, I
have completed every home project that was on the back burner list, from cleaning out closets to repairs to gardening and journaling. Most days I enjoy the slower pace. It has not been an easy year, but yet there are many memories that would never have happened, many relationships that grew stronger, many simple pleasures that I can look back on some day as the silver linings of living through the Covid-19 pandemic. I invite you to share your thoughts about the past year. Email me at knavolio@bestversionmedia.com.

Is Fasting Healthy for You or Another Fad Diet? By Dr. Brandy Zachary, DC, IFMCP with Body Love Cafe, Northgate resident since 2019
F
asting is one of the oldest therapies in medicine, recognized for its ability to help heal and prevent disease. When done under the proper guidance of a healthcare professional, intermittent fasting can lead to effective weight loss and long-term health benefits.
Fasting Versus Starving: A Big Difference So, you might be wondering, what’s the difference between intermittent fasting and starvation diets? Well, for starters, starving yourself is dangerous! Starvation deprives our body of essential nutrients, so it begins eating itself by burning muscle. Fasting differs from starvation because it can be practiced for 12 - 48 hours without the body kicking into starvation mode. Fasting flips the metabolic switch safely and effectively by using one fuel source instead of another. Typically, our bodies are fueled by glucose, but with IF, that energy source becomes unavailable. As a result, the body begins to convert its stored fat into fatty acids that are easily absorbed by the bloodstream. Fatty acids produce molecules called ketones. After 8 – 12 hours of fasting, our metabolism shifts to replace glucose with ketones as our new source of energy.
Did you know that intermittent fasting helps you to live longer? New research from Harvard shows that intermittent fasting manipulates the mitochondrial networks inside our cells, which may increase lifespan!
That sounds great! But how does it work? Inside our cells we have energy-producing mitochondria that dynamically change shape in relation to our body’s energy demand. Over time, their ability to produce energy gradually declines, eventually leading to age-related diseases. A study from Harvard shows that periods of intermittent fasting can help maintain the flexibility and youthfulness of mitochondrial networks. Fasting not only helps you live a longer life, it improves your overall health too!
Additional studies suggest that fasting can help: • • • • • •
Boost the immune system Enhance physical performance Protect cognitive function Reduce inflammatory disorders Slow the progression of tumors Protect against cardiovascular disease
Steps for Effective Fasting 1. Set a fasting schedule and stick to it. Meal skipping is an excellent way to introduce yourself to fasting. If you choose to do a 12 or 16 hour fast, arrange your fasting window during sleeping hours to help the time pass by more easily. 2. Stay hydrated. Be sure to drink plenty of water or switch it up with herbal teas. 3. Relax your body and your mind. During fasting days, don’t participate in strenuous activities. Go easy on yourself by finding things to keep your body and mind occupied in a productive, gentle way. 4. Make your calories count. Between fasting windows, enjoy nutrient-dense foods that provide protein, fiber, and healthy fats. 5. Some women don’t do well with fasting due to blood sugar balancing issues, high stress or hormonal imbalances. Consider our Fasting With Food program to reap the benefits without the struggles. Contact us by calling (925) 788-6300 or emailing Team@BodyLoveCafe.com.
Studies show that intermittent fasting may be better for you than other dietary strategies. This is because ketones put less stress on our cells compared to the by-products of other dieting methods.

COVID-19 and Safety in the Dental Office By Brian J. Hockel, DDS, Life Dental & Orthodontics, Resident since 1964
D
uring this unprecedented time of pandemic and business closures, there is some good news: dental offices, as essential health care facilities, remain open. Your dental care is a critical part of staying healthy. Dental hygiene helps fight viruses! Healthy gums can better prepare you to fight off COVID-19, if you were to ever come into contact with the virus, because your body’s immune system is closely related to the health of your gums. Especially during a pandemic, the goal is to optimize your immune system; a healthy mouth allows your immune system to fight off other infections. But is it safe to visit a dental office? Dental offices take all necessary precautions to allow you to visit them safely; some examples of best practices are: • • • • • • •
Making sure that everyone entering the office is healthy by pre-screening them with a series of health questions, checking temperatures, and using hand sanitizer. Avoiding cross-contamination between patients. In the dental office, all patients are socially distanced and congestion is avoided, with a one-way flow of movement. Non-patients may need to wait in the car or outside the office. Reducing or eliminating any contaminants in the mouth before beginning any work. Patients are given a pre-procedural rinse to inactivate the bacteria in the mouth. Minimizing transmission by water droplets by minimizing use of equipment that creates aerosols and reducing the production of aerosols with specialized highvolume evacuation equipment. Ensuring that the circulating air is cleaned by up-to-date filtration equipment. Following all OSHA and CDC protocols for the sterilization of dental instruments and the disinfection of surfaces after every patient is treated. Offering contact-free payment and scheduling options.
Are you more at risk now for dental problems? Many dental offices have reported seeing an increase in periodontal (gum) disease and tooth decay over the past year. The reasons include fewer visits to the dental office during the initial pandemic shutdowns, and hesitation to go places outside the home. However, without regular checkups, a small painless problem can go undetected and turn into a larger problem. Seeing a dentist and/ or dental hygienist can help you keep on top of things and catch any dental issues while they are hopefully still minor.
Another reason that dental care has become more important than ever is the change in routine that has resulted in many more adults and children being home more. Home is where the meals and snacks are, so many people are finding that they or their children “graze” more, or eat more frequently. The frequency of food intake is a large part of the risk for tooth decay and unhealthy gums. An increase in attention to personal dental hygiene, as well as more frequent visits to the dentist, can help offset this new and increased risk. Keep your whole body healthy! The wholebody benefits of keeping your teeth and gums healthy are well known. According to the Mayo Clinic, untreated periodontal (gum) disease is linked to other health issues such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, preterm births, pneumonia, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. It makes sense to stay on top of your dental health, especially during a pandemic. So, the bottom line is that your regular dental exams and hygiene appointments are an essential part of a plan to stay healthy during these unusual times. Be sure not to fall behind; your health is on the line!

How to Pick Out an Engagement Ring That Will Leave Them Speechless By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry and The Forevermark Boutique at Broadway Plaza
C
hoosing an engagement ring is not a decision to be taken lightly. The cost and the meaning carry significant weight, and it can be a lot of pressure trying to pick out a ring that they’ll love forever. With a little bit of guidance from experts in the diamond business, you’ll be down on one knee in no time. Here are some strategies for picking out an engagement ring that will leave them speechless…in a good way. Do Your Research Even if you think you could pick out what they like, doing a little bit of research will help ensure you make the right choice. Be observant of what their personal style says about them. Try to think of a few words that you would use to describe your significant other. Are they classic? Traditional? Or are they always up on the latest Instagram and Pinterest trends? This type of information will be helpful when you’re working with one of our non-commissioned advisors at Padis. Some other ways to get to know their style on a deeper level include: • • • • • •
Ask friends or family members for recommendations Find out what kind of ring their favorite celebrity wears Consider “hints” that they’ve given you Notice whether they prefer gold or silver jewelry If they have a Pinterest board, check to see if they’ve saved any rings Learn about diamond quality, settings, and the Four Cs
Shop In-Person--Not Just Online It’s intuitive to simply browse online for an engagement ring. After all, shopping online is how many of us buy clothes, household items,
and even groceries. We do encourage you to do some preliminary browsing online. However, unlike other diamond retailers that sell exclusively online, we believe there’s hardly a better way to shop for an engagement ring than in-person with a diamond expert. We own our inventory and have our master jewelers on premise every day, so you get to take home your purchase that day. The hurdle of seeing a photo of something online and then seeing it in person once it’s delivered can be a tough jump for many people who end up disappointed with the quality of the diamond they receive. When you shop in-person, you’re able to ask questions about and compare side by side the color, cut, and clarity. An in-person buying experience gives you the trust and confidence you should have when making such a special purchase. Lean on a Diamond Expert for Guidance What’s great about a non-commissioned advisor is that you could potentially walk into one of our showrooms without any idea what to purchase and walk out with a solid plan or even a ring in hand. Many people put up a wall when they shop for engagement rings and fine jewelry because they think the advisor is only trying to make a sale. As members of the American Gem Society, Padis Jewelry is of the top 5% of jewelers across the country and committed to consumer protection and annual continuing education to ensure you have an expert to work with. Working closely with a diamond consultant is to your benefit. With years and even decades of knowledge, our staff is there to educate and guide you. Visit Padis Jewelry in San Francisco, Napa or Walnut Creek! Our team at Padis is here and ready to help with your hunt for the perfect ring or piece of jewelry both in our stores and on our website at padisjewelry.com. Be sure to join us at East Bay locations at Broadway Plaza – a Forevermark Boutique - and Downtown Napa in addition to our San Francisco stores. We treasure the generations of families who allow us to become a part of their most precious moments. Please feel free to reach out if we can answer any questions and if we can be of assistance at concierge@padisjewelry.com.
