Meet the Keese/Gibson Family: A family that never stops learning

T

he Keese love story began when Meg Gibson and Marty Keese were just 13 years old in a small town in Texas near Corpus Christi. Meg says, “Marty was new to our very small town junior high school, and on his first day of school we saw each other across the playground.

I walked over and introduced myself. We did not start dating until we were 16, though, and then Marty ended up going to another high school in another town for his last year. We kept in touch by writing each other actual letters each week.”

They went away to different colleges, but they stayed in touch and eventually fell in love. Meg went to the University of Texas, Austin and received a BA in Anthropology and Art History. Marty went to Trinity University in San Antonio and received a BS in Business and a Master’s degree in Accounting.

After getting married in 2001, they moved to England so Meg could pursue her lifelong love of education. She received her Master’s degree

in Museum Studies at University College London. Having moved there just one week after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, Meg recalls, “It was a very intense time to be an American living abroad.” Meg went on to work towards her Ph.D. at the University of Texas, Austin, but stopped just before finishing her dissertation to raise her boys. She is now working on her California teaching credential and her Montessori credential. She works as an Assistant Montessori teacher at Eagle Peak Montessori School. “I used to work for the Lafayette School District as a librarian, but after working for them during much of the pandemic I decided to switch to classroom teaching at a school in our own neighborhood so that I can contribute more to our own community.”

Meanwhile Marty was working for the accounting firm KPMG at various offices including London, San Antonio and San Francisco. His job is what brought the family to California in 2015. Marty came to the Bay Area six months before the family and began searching for a home. As Meg recalls, “He spent all his weekends looking for just the right neighborhood and house. He immediately loved Northgate for the wide streets, ample sidewalks and the FLATNESS. In San Antonio, we lived on a steep hill, and it was almost impossible for a child to ride a bike on our street. He knew immediately when he saw Northgate that he wanted the boys to be raised here. When he found the house on Naranja he called me and told me to fly out the next weekend to see it. I loved it too!” Marty now works for Rodan and Fields as the Global Director of Tax. Simon is 13 and involved with Boy Scouts (Troop 832) and an organization called Future Problem Solving where he competes in writing contests. Last year he won 1st place in the junior division for his essay “No Pain, No Gain,” a science fiction short story based on the topic of personalized medicine. (His story was featured in the September 2021 issue of this magazine.) This year he won 2nd place in the intermediate division. Simon also loves performing and appeared in several Walnut Acres plays; he wrote his own one act/one person script for another category of competition in Future Problem Solving.

Ian, 9 years old, attends Eagle Peak Montessori and also swims with Scottsdale Swim Team. He loves baseball, scouts, and rock scrambling. He’s also an avid reader and story writer like his brother.

The pandemic brought new opportunities for the Keese family. The boys used their downtime to write hundreds of cards for seniors in care homes who weren’t able to see visitors. They also began a lemonade stand near the canal trail at Naranja and Walnut Ave.

The family also took the opportunity to take long road trips between California and Texas in a renovated VW RV, stopping at many places in between like the Grand Canyon and Marfa, TX to see the Marfa Lights.

Another pandemic silver lining was becoming closer with their neighbors, the Rogers. Both families have two boys and created a pandemic bubble to keep the boys entertained during the shelter in place days. That grew into a close friendship that they consider like a family now.

A gaggle of pets is also part of the Keese/ Gibson clan. Four backyard chickens are named after the Golden Girls TV show: Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and Sofia and provide fresh eggs for the family. An adorable poodle mix pup named Princess Leia (after the Star Wars character, a favorite movie of the boys) and three cats were all adopted by the family.

The Keeses love Northgate and have helped create a great neighborhood tradition. “Soon after we moved here I got together with several other women on

our block, and we decided to apply for a block party permit at Halloween. That little party has grown and grown and now our block is a well known destination for Halloween trick or treating for children. We love that!”

They will be traveling to Boston this summer as Simon competes in the International division of Future Problem Solving along with kids from all over the world. This is truly a family that embraces learning and opportunities to connect to their neighborhood. We’re glad they found their way here from Texas.

Encouraging a zest for reading

T

here’s an episode of Full House where Michelle thinks her bike was stolen. Danny, her dad, thought he found the bike outside the library, so he took it. Turns out it belonged to another girl, who was now experiencing PTSD about going back to the library. She had “lost her zest for reading.” Danny murmured, “She’s zestless?”

Second, they could pick whichever books they wanted. Now they perked up a little. At least they had some freedom in the matter.

And this was good news for me who had recently acquired a book shopping addiction. We now have over 1500 books in our class library. We have no more room, but I don’t think that will stop me.

The way we teach English classes can make students lose their zest for reading. I’ve always been an avid reader, yet I hated English classes when I was a student. Each year we’d read about two to three books that were trite or boring, or worse yet, long. They were picked out by adults who thought we should gain something from them. Most times reading was as painful as paper cuts. In short, we were zestless.

Third, no book reports. Now the whole class cheered. Book reports aren’t exactly zest-inspiring. Instead, once a week, each student writes me a book letter, discussing the plot, theme, and lessons learned.

Teaching my 6th grade English classes this year, I had some eyeopening experiences. First, I determined that two to three books a year is way too few. So I increased the number to fifteen in one semester. Picture that class period: “This semester, you’re each going to read at least fifteen books.” This was followed by loud groans, a few cheers, and a scared sob from somewhere in the corner.

Fourth, each day they get fifteen minutes to read in class. Providing time in class allows students to become interested in their book.

When they love their book, they want to read it at home.

The benefits of this have been amazing. Students beg for more time to read. Students give their peers book recommendations. They make connections to what we’re learning in class with what they read in their books. It’s exhilarating for them, and for me, because they recognize their growth, and then they want to read more. The 6th grade total for books read so far this semester is 410 books!

When a prospective family takes a tour of our school, they will see a bunch of sixth graders with a book in their hands. Some of my students have even gotten their books confiscated by other teachers for reading during class instead of paying attention.

That’s what I call zest!

Northgate neighbors feed the homeless

S

ince 2014 a handful of Northgate neighbors and fellow St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church members have been feeding the homeless right here in Walnut Creek.

It started in 2009 when Dave Stewart of Hillside Covenant Church began bringing pizzas to Civic Park for the homeless. Pizzas were offered by Rocco’s Ristorante at a deep discount. The food distribution moved to Trinity Center sometime later, and Dave reached out to Dennis Ashlock to ask if St. Matthew’s would consider helping.

Dennis then recruited some friends at St. Matthew’s, including Terry and Bob Johnston. “We moved up from pizza to Costco lasagnas, heating them up at Hillside and taking them to Trinity,” says Terry.

Then in 2015 St. Matthew’s took over the weekly food prep, headed

by Bob Johnston. Every Monday since then a crew prepares and delivers food to Trinity. It has grown to a volunteer group of 12 or more, including head cook Deborah Harris, preparing 60 meals.

Prior to COVID, the volunteers would also serve the meals and enjoy getting to know the people they served. They hope to be able to resume serving and re-establishing those relationships soon. As Bob says, “We learned early on that it’s not our job to fix people. We

are there to feed them, to care for them, to show them respect.” And some strong relationships have formed because of that. Terry reflects on one of her favorite stories, “One of the members invited us and a few of her fellow Trinity friends to her JFK graduation ceremony at the Lesher Theater. She graduated with honors while living out of her car parked next to the WC Police Station because she feared for her safety from her ex-husband. We attended her graduation and then had a nice party on one of our Monday Lunches at Trinity Center for all her Trinity Friends. She was planning on going on to get her masters in counseling. Definitely one of my favorite stories.”

In 2021 Bob handed over the leadership of the program to a “Trifecta Group,” Cathy Farrar, Susanne Hearn and Erick Onishi, “a group of terrific humanitarians.” He describes their mission as a three-legged stool: 1. Provide food for our neighbors, 2. Provide an opportunity for people to show their love for others, 3. Form strong relationships with others in their church.

As the program grew, St. Matthew’s volunteers have become certified by the county with 9 food handler certificates and 3 for food safety, and have a received a permit from the county. The menu has evolved to include dishes like Chicken Divan, Enchilada Casserole, and Beef Stroganoff. And another dedicated volunteer, Don Raymond, brings ice cream novelties each week for dessert. The church provides the funding, and volunteers provide all the labor. Bob and Terry are still involved as volunteers as are Dennis and Lynn Ashlock.

Bob reflects on the homeless situation, “The city of Walnut Creek is way ahead of other communities in taking care of the homeless.

“Trinity Center was renovated before the pandemic and offers food, clothes, computer access, showers and many other resources, and since 2016 the Armory near Civic Park has been open on cold winter nights as a place to sleep.

he Northgate Athletics Department presented their annual awards to athletes last month. Congratulations to all the athletes whose dedication, leadership and athletic skills were honored for the 21/22 school year.

Eric Griffin Memorial Award Winners Jaley Croy Aidan Sunbury In 1975, Eric Griffin died of complications from Chicken Pox during his freshman year at Northgate High School. He played football, basketball, and track and made a huge impact on the school and community.

Since then, the Northgate Athletic Department honors Griffin’s life each year by selecting one male and female studentathlete as Eric Griffin Award winners.

To be eligible for the prestigious award, a student-athlete must participate in multiple sports, earn above a 3.0 grade point average, and show excellent effort, sportsmanship, and conduct. Additionally, the student-athlete must be a team leader who makes others better through their example and encouragement. This is the most significant athletic award given at Northgate High School.

You Rock, Let's Walk!

T

he senior class of the Teen and Parent Service (TAPS) organization of Walnut Creek hosted a mental health walk—You Rock, Let’s Walk!—on May 1st at Heather Farms Park. The event began with two speakers. First, Las Lomas senior Esme Hurley talked about her mental health struggles during her final year of high school. Hurley told the crowd: “I am here to say that life doesn’t get better, but you get better.”

Scott Chavez from the Contra Costa Crisis Center provided suicide resources, a safety plan, and guidance to teens on preserving their mental health as they transition to college. After the speeches, everyone shared a moment of silence and then had the opportunity to wear a sticker noting whom they walked for.

The teens led the crowd on a 1.5 mile walk through the park. When they returned, the participants painted kindness rocks to distribute to friends and others in the community who could use support.

Northgate senior Alyssa Lund explained that the teens picked a mental health walk as their project because many teens have struggled with their mental health during and after the pandemic and they have lost classmates to suicide.

The TAPS senior class has worked together since their freshman year on a variety of service projects to benefit Love a Child, the Bay Area Crisis Nursery, the Monument Crisis Center as well as volunteering at a range of local organizations and doing outreach to improve their community. This walk was their final service project before high school graduation.

Senior Holly McKay noted “volunteering has brought a lot of meaning into my life” and allowed her to feel connected to her community. Through TAPS she and her classmates could inspire other teens to contribute and make a bigger impact.

and how it impacts our health

Fascia is an important piece to whole body health, yet often does not get the attention it deserves. Just below our skin, fascia incases our entire body like a thin layer of webbing, connecting our muscles, organs, bones, ligaments, and blood vessels.

The fascia helps to give our body shape, protect tendons and joints, and reduce internal friction. This expansive network of connective fibers is responsible for about 50% of our flexibility, stability, and suppleness of the body.

Layers of Fascia

We have 3 primary layers to our fascia: Superficial, Deep, and Visceral. Each has an important role to play in supporting the total wellness of the body’s structure and movement ability.

Supporting Fascia

Fascia can be damaged, weak and unhealthy due to: • • • • • • • •

This often results in feeling achy, experiencing stiffness, having tender points, muscle cramps, headaches, or otherwise unexplained bodily weaknesses. How Beautiful Is Your Smile?

hen you look in the mirror, do you like your smile? Like many people, you might have thought: there’s something about my smile that I don’t like. But what, exactly, would you change? What makes a smile look great isn’t just as simple as just making teeth whiter and straighter. These are important, for sure, but there’s much more involved in a smile design. Some smiles are great overall and only need small tweaks and changes to have a huge payoff. Others require more involved procedures. But the process always begins with a careful analysis and diagnosis. For reference, here are some of the attributes of a beautiful smile: A broad, pleasing, dental arch which allows the teeth to fill the corners of the smile. Dark spaces in the corners of the smile (“dark buccal corridors” in dental-speak) are usually the result of dental arches that are too narrow. A narrow palate with insufficient space for the tongue is usually the culprit.

Axial angles that point toward the belly button. What? Are we still talking about teeth?

Think about how some teeth are more straight up and down, some angle outward, and some angle inward. Well, upper front teeth look most pleasing when the central incisors have a slight, but perfectly symmetric, angle inward, rather than being straight up and down, parallel to each other. The next two teeth, the lateral incisors, should take slightly more of an inward angle, and so on for the canines and the back teeth. If you drew a line through the center of each tooth, all those lines would ideally intersect down at your belly button.

A pleasing, symmetric “Smile Line.” The Smile Line is the line formed by the incisal (biting) edges of the upper front teeth. It should form an arch, like a smile, with the middle teeth lower than the canines or side teeth. The opposite is considered very unesthetic: if the front teeth are higher than the side teeth (a “Reverse Smile Line”), the teeth look like a frown, even when the lips are smiling.

Proper embrasure form. An incisal “embrasure” is the tiny, triangular-shaped space between two teeth at the biting edge. When teeth have no embrasures, it’s because they have been worn flat. Young teeth have open embrasures, and teeth with no embrasures look old and worn.

ccording to the California Child Welfare Indicators Project, 8,553 is the number of allegations of child abuse reported in Contra Costa County in 2021. Over 5,000 of those were investigated, 678 were substantiated, and 254 children had entries into foster care in 2021. What happens to the children of 5,000+ families where child maltreatment was not substantiated? This number amounts to the size of the student body of Northgate High School –times five. The pandemic has thrown off these numbers, but the point remains the same. A great number of families –in Contra Costa County alone– need support. These are vulnerable at-risk families.

This is where Safe Refuge for Children and Families comes in, this is who we support.

Imagine you are a single parent with little to no support facing a crisis. When you get paid you must decide between paying your utilities or paying your rent. Imagine you are pregnant and a few weeks away from delivery, but you have no safe people to leave your other children with. Imagine needing to get away from an unhealthy and unsafe relationship but you are struggling to find affordable childcare, a secure job, and affordable housing. Imagine living through some of these challenges with compounding issues and no safe supports of your own.

There is no one better to share their thoughts on Safe Refuge than Gary Guarisco chair and board member of this nonprofit and Northgate resident since 1982. His four children, now all grown adults, attended Northgate High School as well as local Christian private schools. Gary sees firsthand the difference Safe Refuge makes. He understands how vital this organization is to families in need because he, too, grew up in trying times. Before becoming a board member, Gary was on the board for two other organizations, but seeing the impact Safe Refuge makes influenced his decision to get involved. Safe Refuge for Children and Families is a nonprofit supporting families in crisis by providing temporary housing for their children in a stable environment while the parent(s) accomplish necessary goals to help resolve their crisis and build a better life for their family. Our work focuses on strengthening the family. Preventative programs like these allow parents the time and space to focus on solving their crisis, while having the peace of mind that their children are safe in our volunteer host homes. Keeping children safe and helping families get stronger is why Gary serves on our board.

Our Community Library

Storytimes return to county libraries

I

am thrilled to share that at long last, in-person storytimes will return to library branches beginning in June. All in-person programs were paused at the beginning of the pandemic, and we could not be happier to be bringing them back. COVID-19 brought many challenges to the Library, including having to rethink the way we delivered storytimes and other programs.

I am proud of how quickly library staff transitioned to online programming and the amazing creativity they have shown in both streaming and recorded storytimes over the last two years. For many staff members, planning and hosting programs is one of their favorite parts of the job. Implementing interesting and culturally diverse programs and interacting with the people who attend is such a rich way to connect with our communities and for our communities to connect with the Library and each other. Staff have

been eager for the return of in-person events and we are starting with storytimes since they are such an important part of early childhood education.

Storytime is an important way to introduce and reinforce the early literacy skills of talking, singing, reading, writing and playing, and is a lot of fun too! Early literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they actually start school. It is the foundation of preparing children to get ready to learn to read and is especially important for children who do not attend preschool.

We can’t wait to start seeing you and your family singing, laughing, and learning at storytimes this summer. Days and times for in-person storytime vary at each library branch, so please check our website or call your local library for the most accurate information.

Richard, died of Early-On-Set Alzheimer’s disease. He was a firefighter for the City of Berkeley.

My journey was a rocky road filled with potholes, bumps, and unexpected turns.

To aid in my recovery, I headed to the kitchen, recapturing the years I produced and hosted The Short Cut Cook television show. The kitchen became my sanctuary for overcoming my grief.

In a medium bowl, add all the ingredients. Mix well. If mixture is too thick, add a little more water.

The story and recipes dished up helped me heal with a meal.

Food is Love. Share a bite with your best friend. This one is inspired

by Richard and our rescue Boo Boo.

Of course, pets are so important. They’re company who loves us unconditionally and can also be our pride and joy.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

1 cup baking mix 1 tsp. salt 1/2 cup water 2 eggs 1/2 cup 14 oz. canned pumpkin 1`/2 cup shredded Jack or Cheddar cheese

Coat a tablespoon with a non-stick spray. Fill spoon, and add to an oven-proof non-stick baking sheet.

Pop in the oven. Cooking time may vary-about12 to 14 minutes should do it. Check for doneness.

Should be browned. Let cool before jumping in.

Side note: sizes can vary. Be sure your pet is healthy enough to enjoy these as a treat and not a replacement for their healthy meals.
