The Berdows moved to the Bay Area for Kunny’s new job with Google in 2019. She grew up in Canada, but lived on three different continents before the age of 11. Brad grew up on the east coast. The two met at a wine bar in Santa Monica while both were living and working in Southern California. They lost touch after their first date because Kunny left to go visit family in Canada. But luckily they were able to reconnect four months later. They married in 2017 in Palm Desert.

Meet the Berdows: New to Northgate

M

oving during a pandemic makes it difficult to get to know your new neighbors, but that is hopefully changing now with some of the restrictions easing up.

The Berdows moved here from San Francisco last May, at a time when everyone was sheltering in place. They chose this neighborhood for its breathtaking scenery and convenient location. “We have the most welcoming neighbors, but it’s been a challenge getting to know them during the lockdown period,” says Kunny Berdow. She and her husband, Brad, and their two-year-old daughter, Jessica, have joined the Oak Grove Swim Club and set up future play dates with the hope of getting to know the community better and making new friends.

Kunny is in Data Analytics, currently working in gaming for Google. She received her MS from Columbia University in New York and is passionate about getting girls interested in STEM careers. She also mentors young women at her alma mater and is very involved with Women in Gaming initiatives in the Bay Area.

Brad is a Senior Vice President and Private Wealth Advisor at the Capital Group Private Client Services, a boutique wealth management firm headquartered in Los Angeles. He received a BA in history, a BS in finance and a JD/MBA from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business and Penn Law. He enjoys playing tennis at Heather Farms and following his Pennsylvania teams: Eagles, Phillies and Sixers.

The Berdows have had a chance to explore our beautiful trails, parks and open space on many family hikes during their first year here.

They have also discovered our local winery,

Shadowbrook, and have become members, enjoying the outdoor spaces for wine tasting and the views of Mt. Diablo. Jessica also has begun horseback riding lessons and soccer.

She loves riding her pink scooter around her neighborhood and watching Blippi! The family’s favorite vacation spot is Palm Desert where Kunny and Brad were married. Jessica was born on the exact date, 3 years later, that the couple met, making her their special anniversary baby.

The Berdows also have two pups. Samantha “Poo” is a maltipoo who loves the sun and is afraid of the rain. She may be the only one who is happy about our short rainy season this year. Jersey is a Yorkie mix who has recently become friends with a squirrel family in their backyard and “can be seen every morning with her new best friends,” jokes Kunny.

They are looking forward to getting to know all their neighbors as we all emerge from the pandemic restrictions. Be sure to introduce yourself if you see them out and about.

Bronco Baseball Academy is ready for its 20th season

his summer, a Northgate family favorite is turning 20.

Bronco Baseball Academy, founded in 2001 by Jon and Ben Campopiano, was preparing to celebrate 20 years of baseball camps last June when COVID-19 forced them to close for the year.

This year, Bronco Baseball Academy (BBA) is back in full swing and ready to celebrate its 20th season. BBA will once again be hosting four youth baseball camps - two in June and two in July - for kids of all ages and skill levels.

The Campopiano brothers started BBA when they were teachers and coaches at Northgate High School. They wanted to create an opportunity for local Little Leaguers to improve their skills, learn to love the game of baseball, and develop skills that would support them in all areas of their life and athletic career.

“We really just wanted to give kids a place to play and enjoy the game,” Ben said about starting BBA. “We knew that our (high school) players and alumni would serve as great mentors and coaches to all these young players. From the beginning, we focused on having fun on the field, teaching the fundamentals, and helping kids develop skills that would help them in all areas of their life.”

Today, BBA is directed by Ben, who is the Principal of Pine Hollow Middle School in Concord. Although Jon, Executive Director of Secondary in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District, is no longer actively involved with BBA, he continues to provide counsel and support to Ben and the BBA staff. And Jon’s sons - like many former BBA campers over the years - are now teenagers who serve as coaches at the camps.

Besides baseball training and development, Bronco Baseball Academy is committed to supporting all families in the Northgate community. They annually contribute to local schools and organizations, and helped develop the Joe Dawson Memorial Scholarship fund to provide scholarships and equipment to local families in need.

As families drive by Foothill Middle School this summer, they will see Bronco Baseball Academy back in action for their 20 year, and hundreds of young ballplayers experiencing the fun for the very first time.

What is a Design-Build Contractor?

s the name suggests, a design-build company takes care of the design and the construction phases of a remodeling project.

With this approach, homeowners can get both design and construction services through the same company - and as part of one cohesive project. This process minimizes the chances of investing the time and money in designing a project you love only to find out it is too expensive to build.

Even if you’re not yet actively planning a remodeling project, it’s never too early to start imagining, dreaming and researching. Knowing exactly what you want and need ahead of time ensures you’ll have a good understanding of the process and get the results you desire.

Design-build is rapidly becoming an industry standard for delivery. In fact, according to Construction Dive, it’s anticipated that design-build firms will deliver almost half of all U.S. construction projects in 2021.

So what’s something you can do right away to have a better remodeling experience?

How Does Design-Build Differ from Traditional Models?

With the traditional construction model, owners are required to manage at least two separate contracts in which they are the intermediary. Northgate High School

A Final Hurrah

I

n collaboration with Northgate’s “Our Minds Matter” club, the Leadership class decided to create a mental health awareness spirit week in May. Coincidentally, May, which is mental health awareness month, also happens to be the month that students are inundated with finals and AP tests. The spirit week was created to help everyone de-stress as we move into the infamous time that students have dubbed “finals season.” Students were asked to wear a particular color every day and were provided with different selfcare activities to help themselves de-stress. It was a kind reminder for everyone to make sure that they recognize the importance of mental health, and to prioritize their well-being, as well as the wellbeing of their friends and family. Northgate is grateful to have such caring students, who take the initiative to bring light to this topic, even though mental health is a taboo subject.

As a last hurrah for the seniors, Northgate High School has reserved the Concord Pavillion for two graduation ceremonies (to manage the crowd due to COVID-19 safety protocol). Although the students will not receive a traditional graduation ceremony with their entire class by their side, they will be able to invite family members to watch them on this special day. Furthermore, Walnut Creek TV will be broadcasting Northgate’s graduation ceremony on Youtube Live. Make sure you tune in to watch the remarkable, hardworking students receive their diplomas!

Despite the difficulties and challenges this year has presented, Northgate students have managed to complete an incredible sports season, and some have even gotten offers from schools to which they have committed. As a way to honor the hard work these athletes have put in, ASB students will highlight their achievement to the rest of the school in a virtual athletic signing day to show their perseverance and accomplishment in an incredible feat, during a not-so incredible time.

Students in Leadership made door decorations, got chocolate and hot chocolate for all in-person teachers, and even made a teacher appreciation video with all of Leadership’s students, which was played at their staff meeting. All the students at Northgate were able to write appreciative letters and placed them in their teacher’s school mailboxes.

Northgate High School, along with every other high school in the Mount Diablo District, will be offering a summer session for students who may need help raising their grades or need extra support in classes they took in their 2020-2021 school year. This session will be four weeks long and will mimic a similar hybrid schedule with half days.

AP teachers have been under the immense pressure of teaching all the material necessary to adequately prepare their students for the AP exams while unable to see their students every day. In many ways, one would expect the change in class schedules to negatively influence AP students, but teachers have been vigilant in keeping their students on track without overwhelming them with hours of work each night. Despite the support teachers are providing their students, there is still lingering apprehension from students regarding how different the full-length 2021 exams will be compared to the extremely short 45-minute exam given in 2020 exams. Regardless, many Northgate students will be taking their AP exams through May and are cautiously optimistic about the results.

The first week of May was Teacher Appreciation Week. Northgate’s ASB Leadership decided that they wanted to celebrate the teachers in a meaningful way as they all persevered through this year.

veryone has heard that there is no Planet B… but most people assume that someone else is working on saving the planet and our environments. But the reality is that we all need to take part and the best way to do it is with your purchases. Buy sustainable products from sustainable companies. Buy products that last and are not made from plastic. Single-use plastics amount to a lot of the trash that ends up in our landfills, even after our recycling efforts. In the USA alone, after all of our efforts to recycle, we throw away 300,000 tons of plastic from cleaning and personal care plastic containers, which ends up taxing landfills and polluting our oceans.

Unless a plastic bottle or vessel is recycled (not just sent to the recycling center, but actually repurposed and made into another product), then these products that we’ve mostly used once (think soap bottle, shampoo bottle, cleaning products, etc) break down over time, into Microplastics. The problem is that they never “go away”- eventually they become small enough to seep into our water systems (think drinking water, agriculture and the ocean). These tiny Microplastics have also made their way into our food system.

So what can do about it? We can make a huge effort to either stop buying our products in plastics OR at least reduce the amount of items housed in plastic.

Let’s Talk Protein!

rotein helps you rebuild, recover, and heal from injuries and illnesses! It helps you keep your muscle if you’re losing weight, and it plays a big role in many of your body’s functions, including brain function. Protein makes neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers in your brain that are responsible for mood! If you don’t eat enough protein, you will most certainly be in less-than-optimal shape.

7 Signs you may need more protein #1: You Feel Hungry All Day. Protein helps keep you feeling full throughout the day. Protein can help keep your appetite at bay between meals. #2: You are Shaky and Irritable, Especially Between Meals. Protein is essential for blood sugar control. It helps slow digestion and prevents post-meal blood sugar spikes, as well as increases feelings of satiety. #3: Your Cravings are Through the Roof! You’re trying to eat less sugar or quit alcohol and you can’t seem to stop using it. This is because the surge of adrenaline after a blood sugar crash can feel like a craving.

Congratulations to TAPS class of 2021!

he Teen and Parent Service Society (TAPS) would like to congratulate its graduating senior class of 2021. Alongside rigorous school routines, sports, jobs and other commitments, these young women have served in various ways throughout our local community over the past four years.

To each of these young women, we wish you well in your next endeavor, knowing that you will strive for success and continue to make a difference. Congratulations!

TAPS is a community service organization of local high school girls and parents who are committed to volunteer and serve those in need throughout Walnut Creek and the bay area. If interested in our organization please go to Tapservice.org for more information.

During her years in TAPS, Sarah especially enjoyed hanging out with the kids while serving at Love-A-Child for April’s Angels. After graduation, Sarah will be attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and plans to study Sociology.

One of Zoë’s favorite memories of her TAPS service includes the Fall Festival.

She fondly remembers how she and the other girls came together, each doing their part to serve the community.

In the fall, Zoë is heading off to Northeastern University where she will study Cell and Molecular Biology.

After graduation, Alexis is planning to attend UC Irvine where she will major in Chemistry. Holiday TAPS meetings are among Alexis’ fondest memories as the girls gathered for fun and festivities while working on various service projects together.

Livvy plans to attend Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah in the fall. She will be studying Physiology and Developmental Biology.

Shooting hoops and decorating cookies with kids at Love-A-Child were among her favorite memories while serving in TAPS.

After graduation Ella is heading off to UC Davis, majoring in Biology. During her time serving in TAPS, she loved spending time reading with children at their school and then helping them pick out books to take home to enjoy with their families.

One of Hannah’s favorite memories from serving in TAPS was bonding with the children at JUMP IN and helping to teach them how to swim. After graduation, Hannah is planning to attend CU Boulder and will be studying Economics.

After graduation, Ava plans to attend San Diego State University to continue her interest in International Relations. One of her most special memories was connecting with the children at the April’s Angels festival.

It was rewarding to see them smile when they won a game and were able to take home a new stuffed animal.

In the fall, Emily plans to attend UCSB to study Psychology and Neuroscience. One special memory from her years in TAPS was shopping for gifts for Adopt-A-Family. These gifts were purchased uniquely for each family, helping to make their holidays special.

After graduation, Lindsey will be attending Grand Canyon University where she will be studying Biology with an emphasis in Pre-Physical Therapy. One of her favorite memories from her years in TAPS is sorting food at the food bank with her friends and classmates.
