Alex, a Sacramento area native, was hooked, and everything he did after that had to do with gardening, his new hobby. He discovered Market Gardening through YouTube videos and learned all he could about irrigation, crop selection, soil health, weed and insect mitigation, etc. Alex, who comes from a family of entrepreneurs, gained confidence in the idea of starting his own farm. He recruited his fellow gardener friend Tony to the idea, and they set out to find a location.

After many failed attempts, they discovered the property at 700 Castle Rock Rd. in 2017. “When I initially drove by, I really couldn’t believe my eyes,” remembers Alex. “Here we had a humongous plot of potential, surrounded by beautiful scenery with a 4 bedroom house for rent…As soon as I mentioned that we intended to build a farm, the owner exclaimed her love for the idea, and thus Castle Rock Farm was born.”

They discovered that the soil was amazingly suited for farming, the land was already zoned for agriculture, and much of the irrigation infrastructure was already in place. It was perfect.

Erin, Tony and Alex: Northgate’s own farmers

I

t all started with a tomato. Alex Ellison had joined a community garden called Gehringer Gardens in Concord where his friend Tony San Marchi was already a member. After planting his first ever garden there, he harvested and tasted his first homegrown heirloom tomato. Alex says, “I sunk my teeth into a life changing experience. The flavors, from what I always believed to be a

When Alex and Tony realized they needed some additional guidance, they reached out to First Generation Farmers, a nonprofit geared toward teaching a new generation about farming from the basics all the way through the business of agriculture. It is here where Alex and Tony met Erin Eno, a former accountant from Hawaii who became interested in farming after reading Growing a Farmer by Kurt Timmermeister. She was intrigued by the idea of becoming more self-sufficient.

After living in San Francisco for 7 years, she quit her job and started in First Generation Farmers’ 9-month intensive farming program.

Erin then started her own farm and was selling her produce at the San Ramon Farmers’ Market and the Concord Farmers’ Market. Coincidentally, her stand was next to Alex and Tony’s stand in Concord. After a year of that, she decided to join Castle Rock Farm in 2019. With Erin’s arrival came a fresh perspective and an aura of professionalism. “Her energy, passion and ideas were invaluable,” says Alex. “All added up, her presence has had a very rejuvenating effect on the adventure.” The farm now sells its fresh vegetables and fruit every Tuesday and Saturday right on the property from 10am to 5pm.

The lifestyle of farming allows only a little bit of free time, but it’s not surprising that the trio spends theirs outdoors. Tony is a Southern California native who

enjoys SCUBA, hiking, biking, swimming and all things relating to water. The foodie also enjoys cooking vegan recipes. Alex stays active with rock climbing and snowboarding. Erin loves camping, backpacking and fishing as well as trips back to Hawaii to visit her family. The roommates also share an adorable pup named Cooper and a cat named Myron; both help keep a watch on the farm.

Alex says, “The support from our neighbors has been tremendous. We thank each and every one of you for your kindness and most of all, your smiles. In the future, we are looking to expand our farm to be able to host events for the community, so that we can pass on our knowledge to future generations promoting sustainability, healthy living, and fresh produce.� The farm often sells out of many items as many Northgate neighbors have made weekly visits a habit.

ARF Continues Life-Saving Work Amidst COVID-19

D

espite our nation’s shutdown due to the COVID-19 outbreak, ARF’s lifesaving efforts continue within the shelter-inplace order. Deemed an essential business, the team continues assisting partner shelters while meeting social distancing requirements and other safety protocols. They are currently focusing on dogs and cats suffering from complicated medical issues requiring extensive veterinary care and monitoring, which public shelters cannot manage during the current pandemic. Dogs and cats like Moey.

Moey is a 2-year-old pit bull mix with a thousand-watt smile who loves snuggling up on laps, slobbering up tasty treats, and rolling around in a nice patch of grass. Unfortunately, Moey did all of these activities with a painful limp. A specialist confirmed Moey had a cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) tear, the equivalent of a torn ACL in a human. Even

with ARF’s discounted rate with veterinary specialists, the tibial plateau leveling osteotomy surgery to repair Moey’s knee costs approximately $3,000. Additionally, ARF’s clinic discovered a scar near Moey’s back knee, indicating a previous surgery in the other leg. Her x-rays showed a metal plate in that leg from a prior bone break that healed.

Moey is in good hands with ARF’s talented veterinary team - her surgery went well and her prognosis looks good. But she’s just one of many animals in need languishing in public shelters that are operating in a limited capacity with insufficient resources. “Parks to People” website brings the natural world to online audiences

T

he Park District’s interpretive and recreation programs and activities have traditionally been taught live at our visitor centers or out in the parks.

The Shelter-in-Place order changed everything for Park District staff, with the sudden closure of all visitor centers and being restricted to working from home.

Fortunately, there were projects in the works that would enable them to bring their live classes and activities to a larger audience through a digital platform.

Naturalists and outdoor recreation staff were already developing content for short educational videos to cover some of their interpretive topics. A collection of new videos called Creature Features, published daily on Facebook since the end of March, spotlights natural wonders found throughout the parks and was shot entirely

by Park District staff working from home to replace their regular live programs.

A new Park District web page, Parks to People, was launched soon thereafter and is now home to the Digital Learning program, offering virtual reality park tours, nature and field study videos and downloadable activities and games.

“The digital offerings at the Park District expanded greatly during the crisis,” said Anne Kassebaum, Chief of Interpretive and Recreation Services. “The stay-athome order elevated the importance of virtual learning and our naturalists and outdoor recreation staff have risen to the challenge.

“The Park District’s online interface may be some youths’ first introduction to nature, but we really hope these initial online experiences encourage people to go out and experience nature in person,” she added.

In addition to the Creature Features videos on Facebook, the Park District’s YouTube

channel now hosts the recently-produced Digital Learning videos. The Park District’s first-ever YouTube Premiere event, Virtual Campfire Program: Nature Detectives – The Search for Animal Signs, took place on May 23. This “live” campfire activity featured Naturalist Morgan Guenther, already known for her Sunday morning Songs and Stories Facebook videos, singing songs and showing viewers how to search for animal signs while they “camp” at home. It remains online to replay.

The Park District is also delving into new, cutting-edge technology. One exciting example is its collaboration with TimeLooper, a company that combines virtual reality with interpretation for an immersive educational experience, to create Virtual and Augmented Reality Park Experiences. By downloading the TimeLooper app to a smart phone or tablet, people can now explore Regional Parks through virtual reality. In addition, the Park District and Timelooper have launched a new East Bay Parks: Virtual Tour app, which allows people to interact with an augmented reality version of the East Bay.

Digital learning and virtual reality technology have brought a new level of interpretive education to visitors on home computers or in classrooms. When the stay-at-home orders are lifted and programs begin again in the parks, the Digital Learning program will continue on as a major component of the Park District’s interpretation and recreation services.

The East Bay Regional Park District is the largest regional park system in the nation, comprising 73 parks, 55 miles of shoreline, and over 1,300 miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and environmental education.

The Park District receives more than 25 million visits annually throughout Alameda and Contra Costa counties in the San Francisco Bay Area.

“People can hop across a 3-D map appearing right in front of them to virtually visit some of the Regional Parks,” commented Supervising Naturalist Kevin Damstra, who worked closely on the project. “It’s one more way the Park District has used digital media to introduce nature and educate the community during the stay-athome orders.”

To further expand its educational programs throughout COVID-19, the Park District has worked to provide digital interpretive media for schools and families and is now part of a partnership with Alameda County to develop some curriculum-based digital content.

Prepare Your Pet Now.

any of us have been working from home for two months or more under the shelter-in-place mandate, but as we prepare to return to the office, we must also prepare our companion animals.

Your pet has grown accustomed to having you home – it’s part of their new routine. Adjusting to your sudden absence could cause stress and undesirable behaviors. Adding daily training into your pet’s routine now, will help them tremendously in the weeks and months to come as shelter-in-place orders are lifted.

Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation recommends training your pet to get accustomed to spending time by themselves with the goals of 1) proving to your pet that they are safe, and 2) showing them that alone time can be fun! With proper management and training, separation anxiety can be avoided. Here are several suggestions for you to start implementing now:

Low-Key Departures and Arrivals During the 10 to 15 minutes before you leave the house or when you arrive home, strive for a calm, neutral atmosphere. Avoid hugging, kissing, petting, or high energy play. We know it’s very hard, but it is best to simply ignore your pet for 10 to 15 minutes.

Long-Lasting Treats & Food Games Experiment with long-lasting treats and creative feeding methods for your pet’s meals. You’ll want to test these out before you actually leave your pet home alone with them. If your dog or cat doesn’t eat the food when you’re around, they likely won’t eat it when left alone. When you find a treat your pet especially loves, only give it to them before departing the home. This will keep the treat extra special.

Some ideas include: food dispensing toys, food puzzles, interactive feeding mats (like snuffle mats), and hiding kibble/treats in cardboard or paper products that your pet can tear apart (like cereal boxes, paper towel rolls, egg cartons, or paper bags)

Practice Alone Time Practicing being alone is important for all pets. Identify a comfortable, safe area for your pet to be alone. This might be in a room, an area separated by a baby gate, or in a dog crate (if crate trained).

At least once a day, set your pet up with a long-lasting treat, some of their favorite toys, a comfy bed, and water. Start by only leaving them alone for short periods of time (even just for a few minutes). You can vary between leaving them completely alone and sitting nearby while not engaging. Vary the length of absences so it’s not predictable (pets can get very good at keeping time!).

Northgate High School

Northgate High School finds a new way to celebrate graduation

M

any years ago I was fortunate to work with a small group of dedicated volunteers to transform a sad, old football field into a beautiful Sports Complex at Northgate High School. My personal hope was that this space would transform the campus into a welcoming space for students and the community.

In June that Sports Complex became a much needed venue for the graduating class of 2020.

After rumors of cancelled graduation or a drive by graduation the staff at Northgate came together to create a memorable experience for the seniors and their families. On June 2 and 3 the seniors and their families came to Northgate in groups of 10; the administrators at Northgate, led by Kelly Cooper, orchestrated a ceremony that rivaled a Broadway play.

The Field was set up with ten easy ups (one for each graduate- spaced 6 feet apart), a large stage with a red and gold balloon arch, a podium for Mike Ahn who served as master of ceremonies, and a table piled high with diplomas delivered by Principal McAlister. Mr. Ahn announced each graduate and they marched across the field to pick up their diploma while the sound system played Pomp and Circumstance. A professional photographer was on hand to take graduation photos under the balloon arch. Each family had an opportunity to join their graduate for a family photo as well. There were a few parents and family members sitting in the bleachers cheering for each graduate as their name was called. Other supporters were parked on Hutchinson Dr. behind the field cheering from the tops of their cars.

Mr. Ahn served as Master of Ceremonies for the 2020 graduation.

While this certainly didn’t turn out to be the graduation this class dreamed of, I’m sure none of them will forget the great lengths the Northgate community went to in order to make it a very special day. It gave me great joy to see the Sports Complex used to celebrate the entire student body in such a joyful and uplifting manner. I predict that the Northgate HS graduating class of 2020 will prove to be very resilient individuals.

Clutter No More!

B

eing surrounded by clutter and the desire to conquer clutter can stir up many emotions. Chief among these emotions can be frustration. Not knowing how or where to begin to de-clutter often holds us back as we become overwhelmed and paralyzed by our inability to begin the process. Our environment becomes a constant trigger causing us to suffer.

Below are effective ways to attack and conquer these projects causing pain in your life. The following steps will not only get you started, but will empower you to make headway. Did you notice I said headway? Headway leads to the highway of results and freedom.

It is important to start with something small like a kitchen drawer, a child’s toy baskets or a section of a pantry. Give yourself 30 minutes to accomplish your task.

1. Create five stations: Keep, Donate, Sell, Reflect, and Release.

2. Before opening a drawer, box, cabinet etc. Ask yourself, “What’s inside?”

This gives great perspective of items we have and likely use and of items we have forgotten and won’t miss.

3. Remove all items. Take one item at a time and quickly decide in a few seconds if you use or need it. If the answer is no, place the item in its specific station and do not ponder your decision.

Trust the process and continue immediately to the next item. Placing the items in white garbage bags keeps the items out of sight helping the mind stay focus on the next item in hand. Once a bag is full, remove it from the room to feel immediate results.

4. Do not go back to your stations until the end of the de-clutter process. The

items you placed in each station are there for a reason. You now have all your items you are keeping together.

These are the items you use, need and enjoy and it feels wonderful. As you see progress, you will get better at letting go and trusting your decisions.

5. Now is the time to revisit the Reflect station that contains items that you are torn between keeping or letting go.

Group similar items together. You may notice that you have a few items that you are now comfortable releasing.

You just needed a little more time for reflection. For the remaining items, ask yourself, “Would I buy this now or when have I used this last?” There is no point in keeping items we have forgotten about, never use or don’t need. What’s more important, your peace of mind or the stuff that leads to clutter in your life that negatively affects your wellbeing? With the remaining Reflect items, place them in a sealed box for 2 months. Then ask yourself what’s inside again and was anything needed from that box.

The process gets easier and easier.

You will discover you don’t miss the items you released. Healing has begun and positive shifts have been made, making the next de-cluttering experience easier.

6. The next step is the strategic placement of the items from your Keep station. These are the items you use, need and enjoy. Too often we have prime real estate spots in our home that are not used appropriately.

Placing items used often in easier to reach locations allows your environment to work for you, not against you.

7. The Release station is ready for garbage or recycling. The Donation station items should be donated immediately. The Sell station should be focused on last. When ready to tackle sell items, group items to either sell online or consign locally.

Give yourself a week on average for the items to sell and donate if not sold within that time frame.

Your space no longer weighs heavy on you, but lifts your spirits and supports you making it all worth the effort!

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Rocks!

M

y family started the “Kindness Rocks!” project in April.

My Mom had us color some rocks and then she advertised on NextDoor. So many people wanted our rocks! And now my Mom, sister Shayna (9) and brother Judah (5) and I have made and delivered over 200 kindness rocks! We have started making rocks with Japanese, Hebrew and Spanish words on them too because my sister and I are enrolled in the Spanish dual immersion program at Bancroft Elementary and all 3 of us attend Japanese and Hebrew schools. Recently we have been making graduation rocks for all the 2020 graduates around the neighborhood. We take extra graduation rocks on our deliveries and leave them whenever we see a graduate lawn sign. We also have taken a liking to putting rocks on people’s doorstep that have kid’s art because we want to add to the fabulous art that is already there. Having to stay at home has been hard, but doing this project with my family makes it fun. Lately we have been sending rocks to our family that we haven’t been able to see like grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who don’t live near us. We put hero rocks at the local fire stations too and have delivered some to our teachers, doctors, daycare and police officers that we know. Our favorite is when we do a rock exchange and get to trade for rocks that other kids have decorated. One family was inspired by our rocks and decorated their entire garage door with a “Kindness Rocks” painting featuring drawings of our rocks! It was awesome!

My Mom always tells us that kindness is the most important thing, so this is our way of spreading kindness and joy when everything is so scary. If anyone wants a rock make sure to look for us on NextDoor!

A Note from Jack’s mom: My name is Suzanne Yahiro Leibowitz, and

I am currently on leave (due to COVID) from my job as a Physician Assistant so I can be at home with my kids. I‘ve worked at a busy fertility clinic for the past 10 years helping to create families. In July I will also be working for a local OB/GYN. As a full time working Mom, with a full time working husband, we find that we do most things “ for” our kids

and not necessarily “with” our kids. For example, I have been the lead for the Bancroft school auction for the past few years and the lead for the Scottsdale Swim Club auction for two years While I am very proud of the record breaking income that my auction teams have been able to contribute indirectly to my children, I don’t do a lot “with” my kids. So this rock project has been a way to keep them off screen time while spending time together. We sit outside, get rocks from our yard, and start painting. We get inspiration from rocks we find online. Although I am NOT AT ALL artistic, I have found this project to be so relaxing and cathartic. Sometimes I am outside alone doing it, just to get a few minutes to sit quietly. Normally we are always running around to and from work, daycare, gymnastics class, baseball practices, swim team practice, Japanese and Hebrew schools, with a busy social schedule.

While the shelter in place and cancellation of school has been tough, it has also provided us an opportunity to spend uninterrupted time with our kids. Normally packed schedules have been cleared and we can have so much family time for movie nights, to organize, start our garden, do yard work and play outside. I will cherish this time while it lasts. We are healthy and together and that is what matters the most!

So as far as pandemics go, this one hasn’t been too bad for us. My hubby works for a general contractor in SF and has been working from home. Our two oldest are at Bancroft in the Dual Immersion Spanish Program, and our little guy just finished TK at Walnut Acres. We love being a part of this community where we have lived for the past 10 years. (But I do miss my So Cal family and friends).

Emergency Preparedness Finances and Documents

e are living during an extraordinary time, with a pandemic causing us to view emergency preparation in a different light.

As we have seen, guidelines and restrictions change frequently, and how we react has evolved from the beginning of the crisis.

The principles of emergency planning as outlined in this monthly column hold true in any situation even when the emergency involves a public health crisis. We look forward to getting to the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic and, in the meantime, encourage you to visit the City’s website at www.walnut-creek.org to stay up to date on the latest information.

After a disaster or other emergency, the challenges of rebuilding our lives begins. In these stressful times, having access to personal financial, insurance, medical and other records is crucial for starting the recovery process quickly and efficiently. According to the ready.gov/financial-preparedness site, there are a number of items everyone should gather in a safe, easily accessible location.

1. Gather financial and critical personal, household and medical information.

2. Consider saving money in an emergency savings account that could be used in any crisis. Keep a small amount of cash at home in a safe place. It is important to have small bills on hand because ATMs and credit cards may not work during a disaster when you need to purchase necessary supplies, fuel or food.

3. Obtain property (homeowners or renters), health and life insurance if you do not have them. Not all insurance policies are the same. Review your policy to make sure the amount and types of coverage you have meets the requirements for all possible hazards. Homeowners insurance does not typically cover flooding, so you may need to purchase flood insurance from the National Flood Insurance Program.

At Home

Store important documents either in a safety deposit box, an external drive or encrypted on the cloud to make it easy to access during a disaster. (If you do not have access to any of these options, make copies of your documents and keep them with your emergency “go” bags.) Important documents include:

Insurance policies (home, auto, business) Sources of income (to maintain payments and credit) Tax statements (to provide contact information for financial and legal providers and to apply for FEMA disaster assistance)

Medical Information • • •

Physician information (in case medical care is needed) Copies of health insurance information (to make sure existing care continues uninterrupted) Health Records, including medications, immunizations, major surgeries and/or illnesses.

Household Contact Information • • • • • • • •

Banking institutions Insurance agents Health professionals Service providers Place of worship Family members or friends designated to assist in the event of an emergency Petsitters Caregivers (for both children and adults)

In addition to the above, if you haven’t already, enroll to receive all income, Social Security benefits and other benefits electronically.

This is especially important as a disaster can disrupt mail service for days or weeks.

Zucchini Crisps

These crispy morsels of veggies are a real short-cut cook’s dream, and a perfect recipe for a feel-better meal.

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

Ingredients: • • • • • •

3 medium zucchinis, finely shredded 1 medium onion, finely chopped (my favorite are the sweet white) 3 eggs 3/4 cup Panko or substitute Italian bread crumbs 3/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese Add above ingredients to large mixing bowl. Mix well, and shape in small cakes. If soft, add more Panko and cheese.

Using a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, add cakes.

OR, place on a non-stick cookie sheet.

When oven reaches desired temp, place carefully on top-shelf.

Bake for about 25 minutes or until golden, crispy brown. Let cool, and dig in. SUPER SATIFIYING.
