Christmas Toy Drive gives children at Bay Area Crisis Nursery a happier holiday

By Isabella Hanck, Junior at Carondelet High School, Resident since 2008

A

couple of months ago my friend Allison Johnson and I started our organization titled “Holiday Hope” and our goal is to bring holiday hope to children and families who may be going through difficult circumstances. At Carondelet High School, every year we host a St. Marty’s Party (Halloween Party) for kids. We typically decorate the school and kids come through the decorated halls to trick-or-treat and play fun games. Due to Covid-19, we could not do it this year so we decided to create donation drives to still bring holiday hope to kids and families in need! Our first donation drive was for Halloween to collect candy for kids at the Ronald

McDonald Charity in Palo Alto and for the Bay Area Crisis Nursery in Concord. We collected over 300 pounds of candy! For this Christmas toy drive, we decided to donate all of the toys to the Bay Area Crisis Nursery because we both had wrapped Christmas gifts there with our Girl Scout Troops in elementary school. We held two toy drives (December 6th and 13th). We were both overwhelmed by the generosity of the community, and with their help we collected 700+ toys! We have given the toys to the Bay Area Crisis Nursery and Kimberly Baptista, Development Director, said, “We can always use toys and books, and can assure they will go to good use to children in need :) Thank you for organizing

Isabella and Allison collected over 700 toys, with help from the Northgate neighborhood

this, as so many more kids need holiday hope because of Covid-19!” Our Instagram: _holidayhope Our Website: https://sites.google.com/view/ holidayhope/home

Meet the Colemans: Bonded through a love of sports and community By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991

J

ordann and Andre’s love story is a college romance that began right here in the East Bay, at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga. The two college athletes started dating after some teammates introduced them in 2002. Jordann and Andre both coincidentally wore #2, her for softball and him for football. Andre has the unique claim to fame of scoring the last touchdown in Saint Mary’s history in 2003, their last season. They fell in love and both graduated in 2004. The Colemans married in 2008 in Jordann’s hometown of Sammamish, WA. Jordann received her B.S.E. in Business Administration and Sports Management and is now a Vice President and Commercial Insurance Broker at Heffernan Insurance in Walnut Creek. She is also an active volunteer on two boards. She is a board member for the Saint Mary’s College Alumni Association and also for the Maple Syrup Urine Disease Family Support Group (a disease that their son has). Andre, who is a native of Compton, CA, also received his B.S.E. in Business Administration and is now the Maritime Director of the Port of San Francisco. As would be expected from two college athletes, sports are a big part of the Coleman family. They are loyal to their hometown teams, even if means rooting against Bay Area teams! Andre loves his Southern California teams, especially the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jordann roots for the Seattle Seahawks. The two older Coleman kids are also very active in sports, and the whole family gets into the competitive spirit. This summer they hosted their own “Coleman Family Olympics” in the backyard. They also enjoy competing for bragging rights in Corn hole and anything else they can make into a competition. Sasha, 10 years old, plays soccer (WC Surf), basketball (WCYAA), and softball (WC Little League). She also loves acting and baking; the 5th grader at Walnut Acres Elementary also is involved with theater productions through Curtains Up Youth Theatre and creates delicious baked goods for her family. Carter, 8, plays football (Next Level), soccer, basketball and baseball. He also loves Roblox, Fortnite and Legos. Zara, at 2 years old, mostly tries to keep up with her older siblings and loves Baby Shark and the Frozen movies. The Colemans moved to Northgate about three years ago, coming here from the Woodside neighborhood just a couple of miles away in Concord. “The Northgate area was our dream neighborhood,” says Jordann. “We love the community feel with the proximity to so many amenities.” And their neighbors have welcomed them from the start. Jordann is part of a neighborhood book club, which the ladies have nicknamed “The Lady Killers.” “The first few books we read all had female characters who were killers,” explains Jordann. The Colemans have also enjoyed a neighborhood fantasy football league, watching sports with neighbors, and Christmas caroling (prior to the pandemic). The men in the neighborhood swap tips on various home improvement projects and often help each other complete projects around their homes. Jordann is also involved with a new activity that sprung out of the pandemic: a Zoom workout hosted by her next door neighbor. The group has stayed steady even with gym re-openings and closings, another blessing from the pandemic! When the Colemans get an opportunity to travel, they love to visit family in their respective hometowns, playing tourists in cities that they are familiar

with but haven’t fully explored yet. They also love a yearly trip to Tahoe. This active family may be on the go, but as Jordann adds, “We love this area and community. We are so happy to be part of this community and to raise our family here.”

Gordon Reese Design Build Wins Another Remodeling Award! By Gordon Reese, Gordon Reese Design Build, Resident since 2013

T

he Bay Area Remodeling Awards were held via Zoom on November 18, 2020. Open to SFBA NARI, NARI of Diablo Valley and North Bay NARI chapter members alike, all of which represent the best remodelers in the Bay Area. Those individuals competed for awards in 40 different categories, the competition being rather fierce. Gordon Reese Design Build is a proud 2020 Remmies awardee for Best Kitchen Remodel over $150,000. The project was a major transformation of a traditional 70’s California ranch-style home into a unified, open-concept kitchen, doubling as a marvelous entertainment centerpiece.

Project Details

• •

Better storage access with cabinet pull-outs for appliance storage More natural lighting and additional counter space at sink with newly-installed bay window Tile backsplash paired with white quartz slabs for countertops A dog door that allows pet access to the backyard Carefully integrated lighting includes recessed, pendant, above cabinet, under cabinet and toe kick to create the right atmosphere for every task, from cooking to entertaining Relocated doorway to ideal appliance locations

This project started with an existing uninspired ranch home complete with gaudy oak interiors and brash, contrasting wall colors. Our client was reluctant to invite guests over due to the home’s outdated interior, so Gordon Reese Design Build stepped in to create their dream space. The GRDB Design-Build team created a complicated structural solution to allow for the removal of walls that yielded an open-concept kitchen and bar area, connecting the kitchen to their media room; the traditional oak finishes were replaced with more modern transitional moldings to elegantly complete the look.

Before Remodel

More Victories

Here’s a list of things that were removed, replaced, or fixed by Gordon Reese Design Build team.

As 2020 comes to an end, Gordon Reese Design Build looks forward to transforming more homes in the upcoming year.

Are you inspired by this open-concept home project? You can kick off a fresh new year with a remodeling plan of your own. As one of the most prominent home remodeling companies in the Bay Area and a Remmie awardee, you can rely on superior service from Gordon Reese Design Build, including luxurious designs and building techniques that are customized for your home. Start your remodeling project today by calling (925) 885-3770.

Lack of counter space Outdated windows and underwhelming storage space Inconvenient cooktop location No backyard access for the client’s dog Limited guest seating Outdated tile countertops Overwhelmingly garish oak finishes Entertainment area isolated from the rest of the house’s layout Uneven flooring elevations

•

Island peninsula located parallel to the cooktop offered seating for guests, as well as food preparation area

After Remodel: The Major Transformation Here are the major changes made after the remodeling project. • •

Luxurious space to cook and entertain guests A fully-integrated and open kitchen-bar area, made possible by installing a hidden beam that’s supported by two unexposed posts; this intricate framework supports two roofs and interconnecting beams Design highlighting a chef-style kitchen Oak trim finishings were replaced with modern transitional moldings Creation of a bar area, including built in wine refrigerator, beverage center and icemaker NORTHGATE LIVING CA 11

New Year, New Goals and a Very Different World By Dr. Brandy Zachary, DC, AFMCP with Body Love Cafe, Northgate Resident since 2019

L

ast year we dove into 2020 with excitement, ready to tackle our goals & declare it the BEST YEAR EVER! Little did we know what was on the horizon! So, now what? How do we strive for good health, happiness and growth when some are still feeling the stress of the last 10 months?

First - acknowledge what’s real.

If 2020 was actually a good year for you, then great, celebrate the wins. If it was a crummy year, then recognize that, we can’t address something if we hide from it.

Second - feel the feelings.

Not always fun, but part of being human & if we “stuff” feelings, they have a way of showing up when we least expect them or impacting our health.

Third - take inventory.

What is not working? What do you need to change? What do you want? A fearless inventory is a powerful tool for self-improvement.

If you don’t mind me pausing and speaking personally, I can share what was hard for me in 2020. As a small business owner running a good sized clinic with large groups of people gathering for classes & teaching educational seminars to other doctors - it was a time of upheaval. I chose to keep our entire staff employed (we even expanded our team), closed the large physical clinic, took most of the practice virtual, opened a new smaller clinic downtown and converted our entire world of “paper” to “digital”.

JANUARY 2021

It was exhausting.

On a personal note my daughter started college “in our living room”, my husband changed jobs with a long commute, I felt stir crazy staring at the same 4 walls with no social outlets, and being busy “taking care of everyone else” meant my own health took a hit. Not good. There are certainly others who had more challenging circumstances, but as you know, suffering is relative and I had no problem complaining about the stress while binging Netflix with some backyard S’Mores.

Now, it’s time to clean up the mess.

Our 11th Body Love Challenge begins in January - an incredible free health class series and weight loss challenge. Although we are teaching life-changing information, I think we all need a little more humor - so I hope we can tackle our self-care together with a giggle or two.

Ring in the New Year with a New Look! By Steve Padis, Steve Padis Jewelry and The Forevermark Boutique at Broadway Plaza

H

appy New Year from our family to yours! After surviving 2020 – now is the perfect time to kick off the much anticipated New Year by re-doing the ring you wear and enjoy daily. Resetting your diamond is a great way to get a whole new look. Whether you have a pear-shape, marquise or a classic round brilliant diamond, we at Padis can show you the hottest new styles that you will be sure to love. There are endless reasons as to why you would want to re-set your center diamond into a new mounting - you’re tired of your old setting, it’s just not the design you truly wanted, or you happen to have fallen head over heels with a design you saw on Padis Jewelry’s Instagram account! When updating a ring or remounting your center diamond, there is always the question: well what can I do with my old mounting (setting)?! There are a number of different options, some naturally more cost-effective than others. The first option is to keep it! Some of us like to plan ahead and think in terms of taking care of those we love, so keeping your old mounting to make a gift for a loved one, or helping your soon to be son-in-law marry

your daughter, is one sentimental option. You can set a complimentary cubic zirconia in it and keep it as a travel ring for vacations. The next option is to have it set with a colored gemstone. Sapphires, emeralds, and amethysts can turn your old mounting into a beautiful, colored-stone ring. This will allow you to keep your ring which may hold sentimental value and wear it as an alternative to your new engagement ring. Remember, no matter the shape of your diamond, it can be remounted into a beautiful new setting. It can be difficult to let go of something with so much personal value attached to it, but Padis Jewelry can help guide you toward the best option for what to do with your piece, and make sure you are well educated in all the different options.

happy to assist you in any way. Don’t hesitate to visit us at the store, schedule a virtual consultation, give us a call or shoot us an email! Concierge@padisjewelry.com

Still love your ring the way it is? Stop by for a complimentary cleaning service. You’d be surprised at what it can do! Whatever you choose, your rings should always be a reflection of your love and spark memories of the moments shared throughout your life. Our team at Padis Jewelry is
