Dear Neighbors,
Welcome to our February issue of Northgate Living. I’m excited to share the story of Nancy Dupont, a Northgate original who has lived and worked here for over 50 years and has been instrumental to the equestrian community here.
In this issue you will also find articles from neighbors about men’s golf, how to throw an amazing fondue dinner party, and a fun new business in the Shadelands that is ready to host your next special event.
I’m looking forward to seeing you out in the neighborhood as I take my daily walk or bike ride, and I’m eager to hear from you and share your stories whether you have gardening or book tips, an adorable pet, an interesting adventure to share, a hobby, a recipe, a charity you’re involved with, or any other topic you think the Northgate neighbors would like to hear more about. I’m also looking for families to feature each month on the front cover. I believe that interesting stories don’t just come from celebrities, but from our own communities. Everyone has a story to tell, and I’d love it if you’d let me tell yours. Send your articles and photos to knavolio@bestversionmedia.com. Meet Nancy Dupont: A Northgate Original
By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991
Nancy DuPont moved to the Northgate area in 1971, before most of the homes we now live in were built. It was a rural area with ranches, walnut and pear orchards, and a smattering of homes. Northgate High School did not yet exist.
Nancy was born in Alameda, CA. “I grew up in the fog,” she says. Her uncle would bring her to Mt. Diablo on occasion to see the snow. She fell in love with that mountain and the magic of the treelined streets leading there. After graduating from Encinal High School, she worked for the Oakland Tribune. She was the first woman to work in the sales department selling ads. In 1968 she married Ricardo DuPont, and with the help of his GI loan, they
were able to buy a home, first in Danville and then in Northgate, the special place that she remembered from her childhood. The home had a small 2-stall barn on Castle Rock Rd. They tore down that small barn and built a new one, adding horses soon after that. Soon Nancy was giving riding lessons.
Nancy’s two children from her previous marriage, Kathy and Mark, grew up in that house and attended Northgate High School, which opened in 1974. Ricardo passed away in 1983, and her daughter began to help run the business that evolved into Castle Rock Arabians. Kathy moved to Mexico and adopted five children. One of those grandsons, Oscar, moved to California.

Nancy helped raise him, and he also learned to ride and love horses. Nancy is mostly retired from the business now, and it is run by her trusted colleague Rebeca Mendez. Over the years Castle Rock Arabians have taught thousands of kids and adults to ride and love horses. As Nancy says, “It’s hard not to love a horse. Our horses are so gentle. Most kids start with Western riding, but we also offer dressage.”
They also offer summer camps, opportunities for girl and boy scouts to earn equestrian badges, and birthday parties.
Nancy spent many years involved with the Heritage Trails Association and was president for a time. She worked with the National Park Service to help establish Amigos de Anza National Historic Trail where kids could learn about and reenact Spanish parades from the Presidio to Baker Beach. The trail still exists, and more information can be found at anzahistorictrail.org
The trail runs from San Miguel de Horcasitas, Mexico through Arizona and up the California coast, ending in San Francisco. Nancy has ridden the trail in its entirety. She has also worked closely with organizations such as the Diablo Arabian Horse Association, The Equestrian Center of Walnut Creek, and East Bay Regional Parks District to further the interests of riders. She conducted group rides and taught people how to camp with their horses.
She fondly remembers the days when she and her daughter could ride their horses all the way to downtown Walnut Creek on the trail, participate in the Walnut Festival Parade, and ride back home. At 83, she doesn’t ride anymore, but walks her dogs Cody and Charlie daily, or gets around on her John Deere Gator.
“I just love this area,” says Nancy, “with the rolling hills, the oak trees, and the bubbling brooks.” And with Mt. Diablo and Castle Rock Regional Park just down the road, it’s no surprise she has nourished this love for a lifetime, including the last 51 years as one of Northgate’s originals.

Festive Fondue Party
By Lisa Crossett, Resident since 2001
Fondueor as I call it, “Fundue”, has been a favorite since childhood. If you love cheese, fondue is the dish for you. There are several variations including classic cheese, chunks of meat cooked in hot oil called Fondue Bourguignonne and chocolate. The word fondue primarily refers to a dish consisting of melted cheeses typically Emmental and Gruyere combined with wine and a brandy called Kirschwasser. It’s served communally, from a ceramic pot containing the cheese warmed from below to keep it melted and enjoyed by dipping chunks of bread at the ends of long forks into the cheese and then eating them.
Hubby and I spent our honeymoon in Europe visiting six different countries. We devoted several days to the beautiful cities of Lucerne and Zermatt in Switzerland. While in Zermatt our hotel balcony had a picture-perfect view of the Matterhorn. We took advantage of this magnificent view to enjoy a wonderful glass of wine and reflect on our wedding day. For dinner that evening, we ventured to a cozy restaurant to enjoy a classic swiss fondue multi course dining experience. It was simply divine and a lifelong treasured memory.
Recently we hosted our wonderful friends Chris and Amy to a fondue feast at our home. To add a special touch, my tablescape was inspired from Après Ski. I wanted everyone to imagine that they had a fun day of skiing down the slopes and now was the time to enjoy an alpine feast. I found white flocked trees from Target, silver trees from HomeGoods along with fluffy snow, pinecones, mini skis & sweaters all from Amazon. Each guest had a menu that outlined what to anticipate.
Preparing a fondue dinner is quite straightforward. Simple tasks like grating the cheese, cutting the filet mignon and chicken into small pieces, and assembling the items to dip into the chocolate fondue can be done ahead. I tend to purchase the dipping sauces from Trader Joe’s for the Bourguignonne course. My favorites include barbeque sauce, chimichurri, romanesco, teriyaki, blue cheese dressing, sweet and sour sauce, and Thai curry sauce. Who doesn’t love a short cut?
For the chocolate fondue, I prepare a platter filled with sliced bananas, fresh pineapple chunks, marshmallows, Madeline cookies, assorted berries, cookies, and mini profiteroles. I love to add orange liqueur into the chocolate fondue. I would suggest a wine pairing with each course. A dry white wine for the cheese course along with a Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon for the Bourguignonne course and a port or dessert wine for the chocolate course.
I hope that each of you are inspired to create your own fondue party. I have included the recipe for the cheese fondue that I have been using for years. Cheers!

By Lisa Crossett, Resident since 2001

• 1 cup dry white wine
• 2 cups (8 oz)
Gruyere, grated
• 2 cups (8 oz)
Emmentaler, grated
• 2 teaspoon cornstarch

• ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
Add the minced garlic, nutmeg, dry white wine to the fondue pot and heat in the microwave until bubbly. (About 2 to 3 minutes). Add the cheese to the liquid and microwave for 2 to 3 more minutes until cheese is melted. In a small bowl, blend the cornstarch and Kirschwasser, then add to the cheese mixture and stir to combine. (*Note: If the fondue is too runny, add more grated cheese slowly until you achieve the desired consistency)

Crab Feeds support our local schools
By Ann-Marie Fullmore, Contra Costa Christian School, Resident since 2019
You’veprobably seen ads around town for the local schools’ crab feeds. Maybe you are a Crab Feed connoisseur or conversely have never been to one and always wondered what they are all about.
To me, they are about building community and supporting the education of the next generation.
School volunteers canvas the neighborhoods and solicit local businesses to donate goods or services. The items are often grouped together into baskets or combined into exciting experience packages that will be auctioned or raffled off as a school fundraiser. It is great advertising for the businesses, too, to get their name in front of hundreds of local families. I always try to frequent these businesses after the event, as they are the kind of establishments I want to support!
Crab Feeds are usually open to the public, so don’t hesitate to attend if you don’t have a student there. Most don’t have a strict dress code, but it can be chance to dust off that suit or show off that dress you’ve been wanting to wear since before the shutdown.
At the event, you might see old friends or meet new ones as you introduce yourself to your table mates. It’s usually an “all you can eat” dinner that includes crab, plus a vegetarian main course, salad, sides and sometimes dessert.
Once the auction part of the evening starts, things really get exciting! You may win a raffle just for attending, score terrific items for below market value, or get caught up in a furious but friendly bidding war for that coveted trip. Husbands and wives will bicker over how much to bid and “it’s for the kids” can be heard as the paddles are raised over and over. Thanks to the local businesses and the attendees, these events usually raise a good amount of money that goes directly to the school.
Whether you win or not, you will most likely come away from the evening with a full belly and a full heart.
Now that you know what to expect, we’d like to cordially invite you to attend our school’s event!
Contra Costa Christian Schools Presents “Under the Big Top.”
5 - 9 pm March 18th at the Pleasant Hill Community Center.

Should I remodel or move?
This is a difficult question to answer because each individual will have their own unique situation.
Let’s start with some of the most common reasons we hear from home owners considering to remodel or move:
• Growing family
• Embarrassed to entertain
• Safety concerns: House design or Neighborhood
• Isolation: Cooking in the isolated kitchen while everyone is in the family room
Pros and Cons of Moving: Cons
• New neighborhood - unsure of the type of neighbors you will have
• Remodeling - New home would likely require some remodeling
• Moving is not pleasant
• Typical real estate transaction costs are approximately 10% of your homes value
Pros
• Get the house that works best for your family
• Don’t have to live through a large remodeling project
Pros and Cons of Remodeling
Cons
• Living through a remodel is not pleasant
• Sometimes a temporary rental is the best choice for large projects
• Designing your new remodel and product selections - will it turn out the way you hope?
• Hiring the wrong contractor
• Never ending project
• Cost spiraling out of control
• Remodeling costs
Pros
• Stay in the home and neighborhood you love and created so many cherished memories
• Use the real estate transaction costs towards your new remodel
Storm Issues & Tips
Winter and rain has arrived in Walnut Creek in a major way over the past several weeks and we want to make sure you are prepared. Here are some quick tips to help keep you and your family safe throughout.
• If you are firing up your fireplace for the first time in a while, consider getting your chimney professionally cleaned as buildup and/or animals can cause blockage and lead to dangerous situations.
• Also assure you replace the batteries in both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors each year.
• Cleaning your gutters before major storms helps in a couple of ways. Not only will this help your roof to properly drain and redirect water away from your home but clogged gutters can also feed a house fire helping it spread to the roof more easily.
• We live in the hills and surrounding areas of Mt. Diablo and while this makes for beautiful living conditions it also means we can be at the mercy of severe runoff or mudslides.
• Doing a preliminary walk of your property can help to identify any clogged drains.
• You can also take this time to clear any debris from gullies either in your backyard or close by open space.
• Should severe rains or flooding be predicted, make sure you know your local resources.
• For Northgate residents, there are sandbags available at 5 Walnut Creek locations with Heather Farm and Rudgear Park being the closest locations:
• Lancaster Road near Orchard Lane
• Heather Farm Park Community Center parking lot (north end)
• Larkey Park parking lot
• Howe Homestead Park parking lot
• Rudgear Park parking lot

Bread with a spread
By Lisa Assoni, Shortcut Cook, Resident since 2012
Ibecamethe Shortcut Cook because my Italian heritage seeped through my pores. It began with my first teaching position at Phoenix Programs. It was an awesome place for folks with mental illness to participate in life-skills. Who knew that by teaching others how to shop and prepare meals, it would be a lifeline for some, including me? Not only did my clients enjoy collaborating talents with other students, but they loved the food. Most of my class lived in Board and Care facilities, described as 5 or 6 people sharing rooms. On weekdays, they had to make their own breakfast where everything was measured. Many facilities sent them on their way with 1 cup of cereal, 1/2 cup milk and Kool-aid.
They left our program with gratitude. When you give, you receive.
Side-note: Phoenix Programs began in the mid 80’s. It was fully staffed by medical help and teachers and funded by the city of Concord.
Take the easy way out of the kitchen
BREAD WITH A SPREAD
Bread equals comfort. Even better that this recipe is simple, easy, and delicious. Buy a long loaf of sweet baguette bread and ask the bakery to slice, using their slicing machine.
At home, place about 6 slices into small freezer bags and freeze. For a quick snack, remove a bag of bread from freezer, place sliced bread on an aluminum tray or heavy-duty foil, and broil for 2 to 2 1/2 minutes. Super for a quick snack to share.
Yield: 2 servings
• 6 slices toasted bread
• 3 tablespoons cream cheese
• 6 teaspoons Pico-De-Gallo(Buy premade, less expensive )
Toast bread then spread the cream cheese over top. Cover with Pico-DeGallo. Yum. It melts in your mouth.
Food appeals to many senses and the eyes see it first. Pop the presentation by garnishing each dish with a sprig of parsley, basil or cilantro. Make it look irresistible.
