Welcome to our February issue of Northgate Living. I’m excited to share the story of Jim Croy, someone who grew up in the neighborhood, played basketball for Northgate High School and is now giving back as the girls basketball coach. In this issue you will also find articles from neighbors sharing thoughts about new years resolutions and Northgate’s accomplished cross country team, as well as informative articles from our experts. I’m looking forward to seeing you out in the neighborhood as I take my daily walk or bike ride, and I’m eager to hear from you and share your stories whether you have gardening or book tips, an adorable pet, an interesting adventure to share, a hobby, a recipe, a charity you’re involved with, or any other topic you think the Northgate neighbors would like to hear more about. I’m also looking for families to feature each month on the front cover. I believe that interesting stories don’t just come from celebrities, but from our own communities. Everyone has a story to tell, and I’d love it if you’d let me tell yours. Send your articles and photos to knavolio@bestversionmedia.com. Resident Feature
Meet Jim Croy: A Life Rooted in Northgate By Kara Navolio, Resident since 1991
J
im Croy was an all-star athlete at Northgate High School in the 90’s and returned to his roots four years ago to coach the girls basketball team.
After graduating from Northgate HS in 1993 playing basketball for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Westmont College, he pursued a career in finance, working for 18 years at AssetMark Financial Services. In 2014 he left that career to focus on his passion for basketball, opening Elevate Basketball & Performance Training in Concord where he trains athletes of all ages. “I decided to take a risk and chase my dreams,” Jim says. Then in 2017 he became Northgate’s girls basketball coach. “It has been a great experience returning to Northgate and coaching and making memories with so many great kids…many of whom I have coached since elementary school,” adds Jim. He also has the pleasure of coaching his own two daughters, Jaley who is a senior and Josie who is a sophomore. In addition to running his business and coaching at Northgate, he also teaches P.E. at Contra Costa School of Performing Arts.

FEBRUARY 2022
Last year the Northgate girls team finished 12-4 in the Covid shortened season, had four players named to All League honors, and the team was recognized with one of the top three team GPA’s in the North Coast Section. The team is off to another great start and currently has a record of 8-2 overall as they head into league play. Senior Tegan Gaines has committed to play next year for Cal State Stanislaus on a basketball scholarship. Coach Croy is proud of her, adding, “It has been an amazing journey for Tegan as she overcame a terrible knee injury the very first game of her sophomore season. She is fully recovered and was named First Team All League last season and recorded the first quadruple double in the history of Northgate basketball.” Setting records is something Jim is familiar with. As a four year varsity player himself from 1990-1993 he was the all time leader in points scored (1660) and career rebounds (890). In his senior year the team was undefeated in league play and advanced to the state Nor Cal semifinals. He was named All-League three times, including league MVP twice and was the Walnut Festival Scholar Athlete in 1993.
Jim returned to the Northgate area in 1998 after finishing college and soon after married Maryann, who is also a Northgate graduate. Maryann played three sports at Northgate and currently is a teacher at Pleasant Hill Elementary School. In addition to basketball, both daughters also swim and play water polo (Jaley will be swimming for Cal Baptist University next year.). Jim loves spending time with his family and coaching, and when he can do both at the same time, all the better! He’s coached for Walnut Creek Soccer Club and St. John Vianney’s CYO Basketball. His brother, Rick Croy who was the captain of Northgate’s 1995 State Championship team, is also a basketball coach, leading the Cal Baptist University team. Jim’s mom, Sandi Foster, and his stepdad still live in Walnut Creek and are regulars at their grandkids’ sporting events. Jim’s coaching philosophy goes beyond basketball skills; his goal is for his athletes to learn the importance of hard work and togetherness to provide life skills that will benefit all of their future endeavors. As senior Kristin Sanders says, “I have played for Coach Jim for 8 years, and I have learned so much about basketball and life in general from him…He brings out the best in us, and he has helped me build my confidence on and off the court. I am so grateful to be part of it and to have aleader and mentor in my life like Jim.” Like Jim, many Northgate HS coaches have been former players and graduates of Northgate, linking generations together through their mutual love of this community. As Jim says, “There are so many people that I grew up with and attended local schools with that have returned to the Northgate community…We have a lot of great people that give so much of their time to make this a better place to live and provide opportunity for our kids.” He hopes to see you in the stands. You can find the girls basketball schedule on maxpreps. com.

hew, we made it through January and are still hunkered down. Well, it’s time to make a happy, healthy meal. It’s simply delicious.. I designed this recipe to give a little punch to the ordinary burger. Make it with or without the bun. It can stand alone! • •
1 pd. extra lean ground beef 1/4 to 1/2 cup sweet dill relish, with or without sugar • 3/4 cup shredded cheese • 1/2 tsp. salt (optional) Mix the above ingredients well and form patties. Fry to desired doneness. side note: When cooking the meat, the outside browns quickly because of the cheese. Watch it closely.

Historical Farmhouse Turned into
Neighborhood Dental Office By Brian Hockel, DDS, Resident since 1964
Historic Casey House / dental office exterior
BACK IN THE DAY
When my father, Jack Hockel, moved into the Encina Grande neighborhood in 1964, he had no idea how he and our family would help shape the future of the Northgate area. His new next-door neighbors were Thurman and Nellie Casey, the farmers who had once owned all the land bounded by Oak Grove Road to the east, Wiget Lane to the west, Ygnacio Valley Road to the north, and the PGE right-of-way to the south. As they grew older, the Caseys sold off the property surrounding their house, to be developed into the Encina Grande neighborhood. Jack and wife Judie settled into their newly built home and raised their six children, including me, their oldest, who would go on to become a dentist like my dad.
MRS. CASEY’S PROPERTY
Thurman Casey eventually passed away in 1967, and his widow Nellie donated the land adjacent to her house to Contra Costa County for a new library, officially named the “Thurman G. Casey Memorial Library,” but now commonly called the “Ygnacio Valley Library.” Then some years later, Mrs. Casey herself passed away, but she had left instructions in her will that her neighbor, Dr. Jack Hockel (my dad), was interested in purchasing her house; he could bid on her house without paying realtor fees, to convert it to a dental office. My father ended up winning the bidding, purchasing the property in 1978, and going through all the steps required to have the zoning changed from residential to a professional office.
A HOCKEL FAMILY AFFAIR
After much work, the remodeled dental office was open to the public in 1981 and has been a family effort ever since. After graduating from UCSF Dental School, I joined my dad in practice in 1989, in what we now call “Life Dental & Orthodontics” on Oak Grove Road, right next to the library. My brother, Steve Hockel, runs the on-site dental laboratory, crafting crowns, bridges, and other dental appliances. Our sister Barbara serves as the Financial Coordinator / Bookkeeper, and my wife, Beth, is the Business Office Manager. Several of our Hockel children have worked as after-school helpers in the office, including our son Mark, who currently assists with fabricating orthodontic appliances.
1953 Caseys and relatives in front of the Casey House
FAMILY ROOTS / GIVING BACK
Dr. Jack Hockel supervises the 1980 remodeling of the dental office reception area
In these days of mobility, it is a rare occurrence to put down family roots and thrive in one neighborhood for multiple generations. Yet that is what has occurred here with our Hockel family. I am so thankful for the privilege to be able to grow up, work, live, and raise a family here in the Northgate area! Two ways I have been happy to “give back” to the community are: first, providing excellent dental and orthodontic care right in our neighborhood, and second, carefully preserving the jewel of our dental office, the historic Casey House.
COME SEE US!
If any of our neighbors would like to take a peek inside our historic office, please feel free to come by for a quick tour. And if you need any dental or orthodontic services, you are more than welcome to call us at Life Dental & Orthodontics, 925-934-3434, to arrange an appointment. It would be our pleasure to serve you! Siblings and co-workers Barbara, Brian, and Steve Hockel
PRESERVING WALNUT CREEK HISTORY
Maintaining the historic nature of the “Casey House” has always been very important to our family. The building and grounds have been carefully preserved so that both the exterior and elements of the interior recall its previous use as a farmhouse. My Resolution This Year and Every Year - Lose Weight By Kristin Shopp, Resident since 2014
J
anuary came and per usual - my first resolution was LOSE WEIGHT. But this year not only is the number on the scale higher than last year (thank you COVID) my motivation is the lowest it has ever been (again-thank you COVID)! I went back to work full-time this year, so not only am I sitting for 8 hours a day, I have that much less time to workout. I rarely see others, and there are few events to go to so I am far less inspired to work on slimming down to get back into some of my smaller clothes. My husband, who is much more dedicated than me, gave up alcohol for January, is on a keto diet, and is exercising most days. He challenged me to compete with him-one pound of every 2 pounds he loses and the winner gets a prize. My response: Meh. (I already know he is going to win.) My repeated self-sabotage of my weight loss goals is sure evidence that motivation is an issue for me. But if I am the problem, then I must be the solution, right? All of this introspection got me curious about why it is so hard to stick to weight loss resolutions. I flipped on my computer and decided to do a bit of research on the topic, in hopes I might learn something to solidify my resolve. I’m not a nutritionist or weight counselor, but I share here a bit of what I learned:
THE EFFECT OF STRESS
There is no doubt that as we enter our third year of COVID the cycling alarm signals we have been receiving has elevated our stress. As creatures of habit the routines we have around eating and drinking create a feeling of calm - personally I like to have a glass of wine when I make dinner at night to “transition” into the evening. During periods of stress and anxiety we lose a bit of our conscious control and are drawn to higher calorie and sugar-enriched foods because they comfort us. And all of the stress in our bodies increases cortisol, which can actually lead to weight gain. Improving mental health is a critical factor in achieving weight loss goals.
EXTRINSIC VS INTRINSIC MOTIVATION
This is an important concept to understanding motivation for any kind of goal. Extrinsic motivation is what usually motivates us to think about losing weight - for instance, if your doctor tells you you need to lose weight, or maybe you don’t like how you look in a photo. It is something that is done with the goal of getting a reward or to avoid punishment and can be a good kickstart to achieving a goal. But intrinsic motivation is the key to sticking with a behavior you are trying to change. It is the internal sense of accomplishment from the behavior itself. The workout “high” or the satisfaction of abstaining from that beer can be its own reward. Researchers indicate getting to deeper intrinsic reasons that are connected to your values may help sustain your motivation in the long run. A quick exercise: List out 3 lifestyle changes you want to make, list the extrinsic reasons for each, then try to turn your extrinsic reasons into intrinsic ones. Example: Lifestyle change: Exercise more Extrinsic: To fit into a dress that is too small Intrinsic: To feel confident in my body Building intrinsic motivation requires doing things that you enjoy, so dance don’t jog. The goal is to get to a “flow”state where you are so focused you lose track of time.
SET GOALS
Setting your intention is frequently mentioned as the most important step in losing weight. However, in addition to the big goal, for instance ”I want to lose 20 pounds” it is vital to create process goals that are short term, specific, and achievable: “This week I will only eat fruits and vegetables between lunch and dinner.” Goals like this are more about what you are doing rather than the end goal, which may feel unattainable. Goals should also be a combination of activities related to lifestyle, as exercising on its own is unlikely to cause significant weight loss. But how many goals is appropriate? I wasn’t able to find a definitive answer on this, but one study found that frequently setting the goals and changing them for variety helps to keep motivation up and has a better chance of weight loss. Sharing your goals publicly, whether with your family or with friends, has a positive impact on your ability to succeed.
BE REALISTIC
No matter what your goals are, they must be realistic, or they will cause frustration and are less likely to be successful. A study at a weight loss center indicated that participants who had the largest weight-loss goals were the most likely to give up. I am never going to be a size 2, so I am not going to set that goal! It’s also key to be realistic about your diet. Saying you are never going to have ice cream may be too restrictive and actually cause you to overindulge. It is okay to have foods you love in moderation, to what I say bring on the chips and salsa!
MONITOR
Tracking what you eat and measuring your weight regularly are very effective strategies in behavioral psychology for weight loss. They can help you to build awareness, see patterns, and hold yourself accountable. There are many tools out there: Weight Watchers, Noon, Lose It, for example, that enable you to track food, exercise, and weight. Weighing yourself every few days to once a week is recommended instead of every day, as our weight changes from day to day. Tracking requires discipline, and self discipline I can attest is a muscle that needs strengthening, but every time you use it you strengthen it for future weak moments.
CALL IN YOUR FRIENDS
“Good company on a journey makes the way seem shorter.” Izaak Walton Taken quite literally, walking 3 miles may seem like 1 mile when walking with a friend! Finding others with similar goals has been found to increase the likelihood of sticking with them - it keeps you engaged and makes it more fun! Additionally, having a scheduled workout with someone else, whether it’s a class you have signed up for or an agreement to exercise every Tuesday morning, provides a structure to your week and most importantly --- accountability. It is more difficult to worm your way out of exercise when someone is counting on you to show up. If you have chosen to try a diet along with a friend, you can share recipes as well as your struggles, and provide encouragement to each other when your commitment is lagging. So while I haven’t completely figured out my weight loss “why,” I know that motivation really requires a change of heart. I have begun to use the strategies above to boost my motivation, and now that I have stated my intentions publicly, hopefully my chance of success. If not, there’s always next year!

Constipation. Is it normal? By Dr. Jennifer Dufala, D.C. with Body Love Cafe
W
hat if I told you that constipation is common, but it is not normal? Before we dive into this, let’s look at what constipation is defined as. In traditional medicine, constipation is defined as having fewer than three bowel movements a week. Conversely, diarrhea is defined as having more than three bowel movements a day that are loose or watery. So, how often should we be having a bowel movement? The human body is complex, so the number of times you have a bowel movement varies depending on who you ask. Most would agree that one time a day should be the minimum, and over four times may indicate underlying health issues. So, what is going on when you have to go, but you just can’t go? Or maybe you don’t have to go, and you want to because it’s been days... Let’s take a deeper look into what could be going on to contribute to underlying causes of constipation. Common issues contributing to constipation, in clinical order include: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
Insufficient Nutrients Insufficient Digestion Poor lifestyle & Dietary habits Hormones Gut bacteria Neuronal influences Structural influences Underlying Disease
Perhaps you are experiencing one, or multiple of these issues at the same time. Figuring out why you are constipated is the first step in working towards constipation cessation. Stuck and need some help getting things moving? Here are some things you can do to retrain a sluggish bowel.
1.
Incorporate the leafy greens and make fiber your friend. Ensure you have adequate water intake to balance the fiber intake.
2.
Figure out if you need some help with digestion, and supplement with the corresponding digestive aid supplements.
3.
Space meals and chew your food longer before swallowing. Meal spacing allows for full digestion of foods. Chewing your food longer allows for the body to do less work breaking down and “assimilating” the food going forward. Digestion begins in the mouth - it’s important not to skimp on chewing properly and long enough.
4.
Get moving! Exercise can improve constipation.
5.
Stimulate the Vagus nerve. (The connection between our brain and gut.) Humming and gargling stimulate the Vagus nerve. This can improve vagal tone, which helps to regulate digestion and improve bowel movements.
6.
Stress management - stress slows down digestion. Practice breathing techniques, go for a walk, do something that helps you be in ‘rest and digest’ mode as opposed to ‘fight or flight.’

Pandemic Training Unleashes
the Best Bronco Season in 17 Years By Cara Douglass, Sports Reporter
N
orthgate High School Cross Country team just ended their strongest season in 17 years sending both their Girls’ and Boys’ teams to the State Meet in Fresno to compete against the best distance runners in California. The success of the season took them a little by surprise as Head Coach Ruth Seabrook commented, “We focused on process over results. We were engaged in following our runners and debriefing with them, versus tending to the electronic live results update. It was only at the Awards’ Ceremony that we realized the girls had qualified.” According to Head Coach and Northgate Math teacher, Peter Ceresa, “Success was born out of hard work during the pandemic. As soon as the pandemic shut down school and sports had to end their seasons we set up our runners with online training, and checked in with them daily by facetime, messages or zoom. Then once Contra Costa allowed cohorts, we were the first team at the High School to set up training on a daily basis in Arbolado Park, and it gave all the students an outlet and focus during a difficult time. We were also able to employ some graduates as coaches who had also been sent home and they did an amazing job of giving back to the program.” First time Assistant Coach Cody Davis injected the right level of enthusiasm and

fun for the team and noted, “It definitely helped me grow as a first time coach and to bond with the runners to be joining them in workouts.” Overall team numbers were down from around 80 in a regular year, to around 50, partly due to students being apprehensive about returning to the classroom and overloading with a sport. According to Coach Ruth, the runners they had were very invested after so much time together during the pandemic and formed a close

bond with each other. Led by Captain Megan Malloy, the girls placed second at the famous Mt SAC race in Southern California fielding just five runners, rather than the typical seven needed on a team and continued to perform above expectations at every late season meet on just the minimum of athletes. If one runner fell the others just picked up the slack and ran harder so they could succeed as a team. The boys also developed well during the season and won at Mt SAC - racing in the

D1 section, despite being D3, which was the first time in Bronco history! A tactic that helped the boys team, was “sometimes you have to slow down to go fast.” In fact, one key to success was slowing down the fastest runner, Captain Aidan Sunbury, at the start of races, so he could bring with him two sophomores, Nick Knisley and Robert Benard, and help the entire boys’ team keep a close pack time. Although June sees the Broncos graduating a lot of seniors from the boys’ team, the girls won’t graduate any runners, and both teams are aiming to make a statement next year too! Congrats, Broncos!

A Knack for the Stack: The Big Trend We Are Seeing for 2022 By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry and The Forevermark Boutique at Broadway Plaza
W
ith Valentine’s Day here this month and the season of love upon us, we thought engagement ring trends would be a perfect topic to cover – namely because this trend is one that can be accomplished with just an addition to your existing ring or kept in mind as a new ring is selected! Engagement rings are imagined, designed, or discovered. Though the sea of rings is infinite, one will inevitably stand out above all the others and become “the one.” Here is what we are seeing as the biggest trend for engagement rings in 2022. Stacking fashion rings aren’t new, but in the bridal space it’s a trend that is really gaining momentum. A beautiful engagement ring begins the journey of a stacked look. When searching for an engagement ring, consider a classic solitaire in a shape you desire. Alternatively, a sparkling halo with a gorgeous pavé band is eye-catching as well as timeless. Or slip back to times past with intricate filigree, beadwork, or engravings on the band that will stand out like designs by Tacori and Verragio. Should you decide that the stacked look is right for you as well, take care that the diamond is set in such a way that other bands that sit beneath it create a combination that is both attractive and comfortable. Women are happy to not just wear their engagement and wedding ring anymore but to add on with curved diamond bands and other interesting stackable rings allowing them to really express themselves and showcase their unique personal style. These “additions” not only look trendy and modern but make great gifts to celebrate important occasions such as birthdays and anniversary gifts. When selecting your accompanying bands, consider whether the style will work with other rings over time. You will want to add pieces which mark commemorative occasions, such as anniversaries, birthdays, the birth of your children, or just periodic celebrations of your love. Whatever you choose, your rings should be a reflection of your love and spark memories of the moments shared throughout your life.
Whatever you select, your ring stack should be always reflection of your love and spark memories of the moments shared throughout your life. And don’t forget, we offer complimentary cleanings at all of our locations. Be sure to stop by one at your convenience - you’d be surprised at what a simply cleaning can do!
Join us at one of the five Padis Jewelry locations (our three San Francisco stores, our Forevermark Boutique at Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek, or our downtown Napa location) to view fine designers such as Tacori, Verragio, A Jaffe, Gabriel & Co and Forevermark and find the ring(s) that speak to you. Our stores are always a comfortable non-commissioned shopping environment.
Our team at Padis Jewelry is happy to assist you in any way. Don’t hesitate to visit us at the store, schedule a virtual consultation at padisjewelry.com or shoot us an email! Concierge@padisjewelry.com
