This December marks our 3 year anniversary of Northgate Living Magazine! We have learned a lot about our community over the past 36 months and have had a blast doing it! Meet Lara Honos-Webb: An Advocate for Neurodiversity

island Santorini as they were backpacking through Europe. They returned to the island a year later for their honeymoon. Ken works in Fintech – an emerging industry that uses technology to advance and automate financial transactions. Lara is a clinical psychologist who specializes in ADHD and executive dysfunctions in private practice in Walnut Creek. She has written seven books and speaks regularly on advancing neurodiversity. “The goal of neurodiversity is to use a strength-based approach to reduce stigma for mental illness and to increase inclusion and accessibility,” explains Lara.

Her books The Gift of ADHD and The Gift of Adult ADD, help parents and adults find their strengths so that they can advocate for themselves or their children from a position of confidence. Confidence helps to boost motivation leading to better outcomes.

Their oldest child, Kenny, is a senior at Northgate High School, Kenny ran Cross Country at Northgate prior to Covid halting athletics, and the whole family likes to stay active running, biking and swimming. Ken and Kenny have completed sprint triathlons, and Kenny qualified for the 2019 Nationals in Cleveland, which he competed in.

Audrey, a Sophomore at Northgate High School, plays competitive soccer and played on the JV Soccer and Lacrosse team before Covid.

Competing in triathlons has given the family opportunity for great weekend getaways to places like Napa, Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay. They also enjoy trips to Southern California and Disneyland.

ara and her husband, Ken, came to the San Francisco area in 1999 when Lara accepted a postdoctoral fellowship at UCSF in addiction studies. They found a home in the Walnut Green neighborhood in 2004 where they have enjoyed raising their two children. “We moved there as an ideal place to raise children in a kid friendly neighborhood,” says Lara. “I like to say that we raised our kids at Arbolado Park where we could easily walk to and spend long days there.

There were always other kids there, and it was a great place to host play dates. We attended and hosted many birthday parties there as well. Now, during this Covid era, a community group of friends meet there twice a month to stay connected in an appropriate social distanced way and celebrate the return to seeing people in the real world.”

Lara and Ken met at the University of Michigan in their freshman year, got engaged the summer after graduation and got married one year later. They got engaged on the Greek

“Living in the Northgate area offers an incredible opportunity to enjoy nature,” adds Lara. “We enjoy the paved sidewalks, canal trail with lots of wildlife sightings including ducks, birds and white herons. I’ve also seen spectacular rainbows that look like they end beyond Arbolado soccer field.

I like to joke that I am going through my “Ansel Adams phase” as I take lots of nature photos on walks including photos of Mt. Diablo, blue skies with clouds and sunrises.

We love to walk and bike on the trails and enjoyed the community pool. We have loved having groups of kids over to kick off trick or treating and gather parents on Halloween.”

Lara’s most recent book Six Super Skills for Executive Functioning: Tools to Help Teens Improve Focus, Stay Organized, and Reach Their Goals came out in October.

She developed the six super skills over 15 years as she distilled dozens of treatment tools into a more memorable self-help strategy so easy

even teens can use it. The six super skills are 1) finding gifts, 2) setting goals,3) chunking goals into the next step, 4) boosting motivation, 5) mood management and 6) finding focus. Science shows that exercise and time in nature are two of the most powerful ways to boost attention.

Lara is the author of many books that help people with ADD and other executive dysfunctions.

Lara’s next big goal is to launch an app for teens using the 6 super skills to protect them from the risks of technology addiction and sleep cycle shifts. Just as many people such as “body builders” go to the gym, not to cure an illness but to create health, strength, flexibility, and endurance, so too can teens build mental strengths that we call executive functioning – attention, planning, flexible thinking, emotional regulation and impulse control.

Lara adds, “If I had one thing to say to my fellow neighbors it would be to watch the Netflix show The Social Dilemma. This show features many of the creators of the social media technologies who are ringing the alarm that these tools are designed to be addictive and may be linked to increased rates of depression and anxiety in teens. As they say ‘knowledge is power,’ and my hope to create an app to build the six super skills that can balance the risks with protective tools such as building confidence through setting and reaching goals.”

arley Sheehy, a Northgate mom of three boys, aims to set cooks up for success with her DIY cooking kits featuring globally-inspired foods. “Our DIY kits make it simpler to explore international cooking by including specialized shelfstable ingredients, cooking tools, and detailed instructions; home cooks add their favorite fresh ingredients,” explains the entrepreneur.

During her travels, Carley experienced many foods that she wished to recreate when she got home, only to find that collecting all the unique ingredients that may only be used once was a lot of work and she wasn’t always sure about the techniques or recipes. “But the actual cooking of new

cuisines made me feel adventurous and proud to share her creations. That’s when I had my ah-ha moment!” says Carley. She left the corporate world in 2012 to pursue her dream of starting her own business.” It’s been a crazy rollercoaster since, but I’m so grateful to have a thriving small business, especially during this unprecedented time.”

Amidst COVID-19, this year’s holiday season will follow social distancing and maskwearing protocols. Your favorite retailers, restaurants, service and wellness providers are open and welcome your support. Be sure to visit their websites for updates on holiday promos, curbside pickup options and hours of operation.

Outdoor dining and retailers’ pop-ups continue to serve customers among the downtown streets lined with holiday lights, banners Winter Windows.

This new collaborative program brought to you by Walnut Creek Downtown (WCD) and Walnut Creek’s Education Foundation, paired 20 downtown businesses

with student artists to decorate business windows. Be sure to look for cute snowmen hiding in the windows when you participate in the Snowman Scavenger Hunt, hosted by Walnut Creek’s Park & Recreation Department and WCD (November 23-December 6).

The annual Holiday Stroll (December 4-6) invites locals and visitors of Downtown Walnut Creek to explore businesses and take advantage of sales, special promotions, exclusive samples, and more. Is your tree prepared for a windstorm?

Trees are buffeted by the wind all the time. The 10-15 mile per hour variety can create angst in a tree owner as they watch their tree sway back and forth in the billowy gusts. The tree may even bang against the house and produce spooky creaking sounds as branches rub against one another. These are easy fixes. A few pruning cuts can create more space between the tree, and the house, and removal of crossing branches can eliminate the spooky creaking! But what about the really fierce winds?

What effect does that have on a tree?

What is wind?

Wind is air in motion. Air moves from a region of high pressure to low pressure, the difference due to unequal heating of the atmosphere. The really fierce winds, such as tornados, hurricanes, and gale-force winds, can devastate a landscape by ripping off branches and uprooting whole trees, especially if the ground is saturated with water.

Fortunately, living in California, we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to contend with tornados or hurricanes. But we can learn from trees that survive those types of winds.

How trees protect themselves

First off, trees donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to fall over or lose giant limbs any more than we want them to. Trees have developed traits that help minimize wind damage. Palms trees are probably the most adaptable trees for extreme winds. The next time they show palms trees blowing in a hurricane, notice how the palm fronds fold up into cones and minimize the fronds surface to winds. Other species, such as maples and sycamores, have leaves with long petioles that roll up into a cone and act as a windsock, funneling the wind through the canopy. Trees that grow in the face of prevailing or steady winds, such as trees near the ocean, adapt by putting on more growth in their roots and stems than in height and therefore tend to be short and stocky.

Wind helps trees develop a strong root system.

A tree stem must be free to move or flex for proper development. The diameter of the lower trunk is greater in free-swaying trees than in those prevented from moving. Free-swaying trees also are shorter than those held rigidly or protected.

Trees that are properly staked at planting and allowed to move in the wind develop a better and stronger root system (assuming there are no girdling roots) than those not allowed to move.

No guarantees

However, all trees can be uprooted when subjected to certain levels of wind velocity.

Barring uprooting, when push comes to shove, trees will snap at the weakest trunk juncture. Barring that, the crown may break and split apart, leaving nothing but a tree trunk behind. In strong winds, the tree trunk acts as a lever between the

fulcrum root structure and the canopy. As trunk height increases, the lever effect becomes increasingly powerful, leading to trees being uprooted.

Proper pruning can reduce wind failure potential

Studies of trees after a hurricane have shown that trees that were properly pruned before the storm survived 25% more than trees of the same species that were not pruned. The emphasis here is on “proper” pruning. Trees that have been topped, excessively thinned or lion tailed (where the hard to reach foliage at the end of the branch is left) have NOT been properly pruned!

Lessons learned from hurricanes

The University in Florida studied all the hurricanes between Andrew (1992) and Katrina (2005) to answer the question: what makes a tree more wind resistant?

Here is what they discovered.

1. The higher the wind speed, the more likely trees will fail.

2. Trees in groups survive winds better than trees growing individually.

3. Trees suddenly exposed to the wind due to adjacent trees being removed are more prone to failure.

4. Some species resist wind better than others.

5. Older trees are more likely to fail.

6. Unhealthy trees are predisposed to damage.

7. Trees with poor structure or included bark are more vulnerable in the wind.

8. Trees with more rooting space survive better 9. Good soil properties, such as adequate soil depth, deep water table, and no compaction, help wind resistance.

10. Damaged root systems make trees vulnerable in the wind.

As always, having a Certified Arborist inspect your tree in person is the best way to answer the question, “Is my tree prepared for a wind storm?”

Melatonin is a known immunomodulator and a study review published on 10/2/2020 looked at its impact on Covid-19 and suggested the following: Melatonin as an anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory agent counters acute lung injury (ALI)/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) induced by viral and bacterial infections. Melatonin can be beneficial in critically ill patients via reducing vessel permeability, inducing sedation, decreasing agitation and increasing sleep quality.
