Dear Neighbors,

Welcome to our August issue of Northgate Living CA. Even though school seems to start earlier every year, there is still plenty of summer weather left, and I hope you are enjoying the warm days, backyard barbeques, and, opportunities to attend events in our great city!. In this issue you will find lots of information about events going on around Walnut Creek, including Walnut Creek’s Arts Around August celebration. We also present the Puppala family as our cover story this month, a family that is full of fun and adventure.

I’m eager to hear from you and share your stories whether you have gardening or book tips, an adorable pet, an interesting adventure to share, a hobby, a recipe, a charity you’re involved with, or any other topic you think the Northgate neighbors would like to hear more about. I’m also looking for families to feature each month on the front cover. I believe that interesting stories don’t just come from celebrities, but from our own communities. Everyone has a story to tell, and I’d love it if you’d let me tell yours. Send your articles and photos to knavolio@bestversionmedia.com. Meet the

Puppala Family:

an active family full of fun

Vivek Puppala grew up in the Bay Area, attended UC Berkeley, and then moved to the East Coast to attend medical school. That is where he met New York native Amrita Jayagopal. Vivek messaged Amrita online and “despite taking two months to get back to him, we eventually went on a first date.” The sparks flew and soon they were making plans to marry.

Both are working in healthcare. Amrita is a Registered Dietitian and Diabetes Educator. She received her undergraduate degree in dietetics from the University of Delaware and a master’s degree in Community Health Education at Adelphi University in New York. She was working as an inpatient dietitian at a hospital in Queens when she met Vivek. She now works for Safeway filming Facebook Live videos and creating healthy recipes for various companies and products. She also is a dietitian for Diablo Clinical Research providing nutrition education and support to patients in weight loss and diabetic trials. In her free time, she is an avid baker with a love for making cakes and a foodie who enjoys exploring the culinary scene in Walnut Creek.

Vivek is an Emergency Room Physician. He attended medical school at New York Medical College and spent a one-year residency at the Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston before returning to New York to complete a residency at the Lincoln Medical Center in the South Bronx. The opportunity to have an impact on an underserved population there was a life-changing experience for him. After his residency he always knew that he wanted to return to the Bay Area, so he convinced Amrita to come to California where he now works with a similar population. He enjoys movies, cooking, and playing games with their three daughters. When time allows, he has a passion for creative writing. As an avid Golden State Warriors fan, Vivek waited 30 years to see a Warriors Championship (and then he got 4 in 8 years!). Amrita says she brought her New York sports luck with her when they moved here in 2009!

Even though Vivek grew up in the Bay Area and attended UC Berkeley, he had never been east of the Caldecott Tunnel. It was when Amrita researched cities in the Bay Area that they discovered Walnut Creek. “After just one visit, we fell in love with the lively downtown, abundance of family friendly parks, and outdoor activities for kids and pets,” says Amrita. Even more than baking, she loves animals, especially their French Bulldog Munster (and her twin brother Stewie who recently passed). They found a Frenchie meet-up group that they take Munster to. Amrita shares, “It’s absolutely adorable to see 30+ French Bulldogs running around the dog park, snorting and drooling to the point of exhaustion.”

Munster shares a birthday with their youngest child Janavi (6). Janavi says she wants to be a “skater girl,” but mom and dad are hoping that’s just a phase. Jayna (9) has shown an affinity for soccer and basketball, while the oldest, Sarika (11), has taken an interest in tennis. All three

girls participate in swimming at the American Swim Academy at the Shadelands Sports Mall and Taekwondo at Sparta. They are working hard towards their goal of getting their black belts someday. They also attend Indian School on Saturdays to help them connect with both sets of grandparents and learn the history and culture of India.

The family loves living in Rancho Paraiso because they have great neighbors and an abundance of wildlife. Last summer they hosted a movie night on their driveway for their neighbors and plan to do it again this summer. “We make every effort to keep the wildlife safe,” says Amrita. “Several months ago we found a mother cow in distress in the field behind our home, and our neighbor was able to contact the rancher to get the help her calf needed. Just last week a fawn got separated from its mother and sibling and got stuck in a neighbor’s gate. We were able to call Lindsey Wildlife, who provided us with assistance, and we were able to get the fawn reunited with its family.”

The Puppalas also love Halloween and creating family themed costumes. So far, their favorite was during the pandemic when they dressed as “Limited Edition Barbie with Healthcare Ken” (Tired at home Barbie, Zoom Barbie, Voting Barbie, Grocery Shopping/Hoarding Barbie, and the dogs as chicken and flour (two products you couldn’t find in stores for a while during the pandemic). They also enjoy searching for dogfriendly vacation spots that allow them to explore California, recently discovering Pismo Beach and Dillon Beach.

Hopefully you will get a chance to meet this fun family or see them out at Halloween in another fun, familythemed costume! If you see Munster out taking a walk, be sure to stop and say hello.

Two friends lead offensive line for Northgate football

As the Northgate High School Football team prepares for the 2023 season, hoping to repeat their berth for the NCS Playoffs and go even further than they did last year, two players in particular are excited for the upcoming season. Tony Pucci (#57) and Max Anum (#55) have been playing football together since 8th grade and have been making an impact for Northgate since Freshman year. Last year, as juniors, both were named All-League players; this will be their 3rd year as varsity starters. The two offensive linemen attended college recruiting camps this summer and have been training with the team since June. Both are being recruited by college programs.

What makes this duo special is the friendship they carry on and off the field. They have

a close bond. They share a friendship and belief in each other as players and young men.

Tony said, “I enjoy playing with Max and all my linemen, knowing we all trust each other. It is rewarding when Max and I work together to block for our teammates.”

Max added, “Tony and I have been training and playing together for 5 years. We went through freshmen year to COVID year, and now it’s our turn to lead the team as seniors. I am very excited to see our team’s success.”

It’s sure to be an exciting season, and the Broncos hope to repeat their win against Las Lomas in the Battle of the Creek on September 29.

CHIEF OF POLICE COMMUNITY ADVISORY BOARD

Feb. 2023

So, what exactly is the Chief’s Community Advisory Board (CAB)?

CAB members consist of a diverse group of between 10-15 Walnut Creek residents from different walks of life who represent a cross-section of people ranging from Business Owners, Educators, Non-profits, Professionals, Retirees, etc. from a variety of age groups. This forum represents diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and interests. Members typically serve for a two- year term on a strictly volunteer basis. Walnut Creek is fortunate to have many residents who get involved in a number of volunteer activities.

The CAB’s Mission statement as taken from the WCPD’s website reads as follows: “Our mission is to represent the diverse community of Walnut Creek in facilitating a positive, trusting, and effective relationship with the Walnut Creek Police Department. We will endeavor to provide honest and open feedback to support the Walnut Creek Police in continuously meeting the highest standards of citizen engagement, professional service, and protection.”

When did the CAB start and why?

The CAB was started in early 2020 under the leadership of Thomas Chaplin, the Walnut Creek Police Chief at that time. Shortly after forming, the COVID-19 pandemic struck and sent CAB members scurrying to download Zoom to their computers to continue their work virtually. Fortunately, this year, under Chief Jamie Knox, members meet in person without the challenge of screen fatigue.

The Advisory Board is meant primarily to act as a sounding board to the Chief and the wider police department. This notion is advanced by the sharing of internal reports and other relevant metrics with the Advisory Board who get to ask questions, make suggestions, voice their concerns, and generally provide feedback regarding policing issues. These roundtable discussions help to identify potential areas of improvement and transparency. Issues discussed include, but are not limited to:

• Use of Force

• Mental Health Response

• Criminal activity and trends

• Transparency

• Homelessness

• Technology

• Enhancing our quality of life in Walnut Creek CAB members can openly discuss their experiences, provide input on department polices and practices, and share ideas for improving police-community relations. It’s a safe bet that whatever is on the minds of CAB members is also on the minds of many of our fellow residents.

Community Outreach Programs

The Advisory Board can also serve as a bridge between the PD and the community in supporting the Department’s outreach programs and events. These initiatives help to build trust, enhance understanding, and promote positive interactions between law enforcement and the community. Some events include the following:

Coffee with a Cop

These are sponsored by the PD and held on a regular basis. Details are posted on the Department’s social media platforms, notably NextDoor and Facebook. So far, this year, one was held at Peet’s on Locust St and more recently at Capital One on Main St. These Saturday morning venues are open to the public and have been well attended.

Coffee with a Cop gives Walnut Creek residents (and non-residents) the chance to interact with a number of the officers, including Chief Knox. Here, the public gets the opportunity to open communication lines directly with the WCPD and establish meaningful rapport. The public gets to know the officers “behind the vest” at a personal level. They are regular folks – but with a specific skill set. Many have families in town with children who attend our local schools.

The WCPD has an admirable reputation for a holistic approach to policing. They do much more than go after bad actors and keep residents safe; they also provide a sense of humanity and empathy to anyone in need of assistance.

National Night Out – Broadway Plaza, Tuesday, August 1, 5-8pm (SAVE THE DATE!)

The WCPD will host National Night Out on August 1 at Broadway Plaza. NNO is an annual event which takes place across the country on the first Tuesday of August.

The event aims to promote positive police-community partnerships, enhance neighborhood camaraderie, and foster a sense of unity and safety among residents. NNO has been celebrated since 1984 and has grown into a widely recognized event over the years. Not dissimilar to Coffee with a Cop, the primary goal is to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve. https://natw.org/

It is a reminder that communities thrive when people come together, support one another, and actively work towards a common goal of creating safe and vibrant neighborhoods. In this post-COVID environment where it sometimes seems our social contract is broken; it is a welcome reminder. It also sends a message to would-be criminals that neighborhoods are organized and are fighting back against crime.

The Walnut Creek PD looks forward to seeing you there!

Advertising campaigns can be up to three times more powerful when print and digital media components are combined in a marketing strategy.1 Each format creates a unique experience for every consumer who comes across your ad. Print media activates the senses of readers, such as sight, smell and touch. This creates a memorable experience and ultimately improves the chances of them stopping by or giving you a call. On the flip side, digital ad campaigns are a great way to reach more customers on multiple platforms, while keeping a targeted approach geared to local customers in your area. By mixing print and digital media in your marketing efforts, you’ll reach an impactful audience and stay top-of-mind in the community.

REPETITION IS KEY

Pairing print and digital advertising in your marketing campaign not only expands your audience, but it also increases the chances of consumers making a meaningful connection with your business.2 For example, a consumer may not act upon a print or digital ad alone, no matter how effective your messaging is, but if they see your brand online and in a local magazine, they’re more likely to become a paying customer in the future. Adding multiple touchpoints to your campaign adds validity and trust to your overall brand. This consistency and repetition boosts the audience’s memory capabilities and often leads to improved results throughout a marketing campaign.

Visit Napa this Summer

Napa is a destination that visitors travel to from around the globe. Luckily, Walnut Creek is practically a “hop, skip and a jump” away from this world-renowned wine region. A true joy in life is to visit a new winery in Napa or Sonoma valley to sip & savor extraordinary wines and gourmet bites. This month I am thrilled to share with you, Davis Estates, Odette Estate Winery, and Louis M. Martini Winery.

Davis Estates, a century-old estate winery was purchased in 2011 by Mike Davis who carefully curated the restoration of this magnificent winery. Keeping with our tradition of visiting a new winery each month, we selected the cave tour & tasting which included a food pairing experience. Michael was our host and had unparallel knowledge, service, and authenticity. Our tour included the stunning grounds along with the awe-inspiring cave where we enjoyed a glass of cabernet extracted from the barrel. While lightly swinging on the floating outdoor couch on the deck, we began with a taste of merlot paired with a demitasse cup of curried cauliflower soup adorned with medjool dates, kalamata olives and pistachios. Next, we

enjoyed a 2018 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon with a charred escarole, burrata crostini which was simply perfect. Michael brought out the 2018 Zepher, a Bordeaux style wine, paired with truffled steel cut oats and roasted mushrooms - such a well-executed, surprising dish. Finally, we savored a braised short rib with a bacon cognac sauce and creamy polenta matched with an Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. Please “run don’t walk” to this crown jewel in Calistoga! (www.davisestates.com)

Nestled in the Stags Leap District is Odette, which is environmentally responsible and a LEED certified winery. We journeyed to this modern yet classic winery several years ago for a library Cabernet tasting experience paired with a delightful individual charcuterie plate. Upon our arrival we were greeted and escorted on a tour of cave and bottling area to learn about this property and history. We landed back in the estate lounge at a large table set for eight people with our personalized menu for the tasting. Not being “star searchers” we did not realize until the next day, that seated at our table were Glen Powell from Top Gun Maverick, his girlfriend at the time Renee Barge from the tv show Extra and his sister Leslie. Prior to leaving, Glen said it was wonderful to meet us and gave us a hug. It was probably refreshing to have a real conversation and not be recognized. Odette is part of the Plumpjack family of wines, and we tasted several reds from Odette, Cade, Plumpjack, and Adaptation. A true treasure for Cabernet aficionados! (www.odetteestate.com)

Louis M. Martini is an iconic winery in St. Helena that was built in 1933 and a true trailblazer in the valley. This hidden gem may get overlooked, but I implore you to add to your list. The cabernet sauvignons are Robert Parker worthy along with the culinary experience from aspiring Michelin chef Aaron Meneghelli. The interior reveals a fresh modern architectural, yet cozy vibe with rich woods, metals, luxe fabrics, and airy ambiance. The food and wine pairings were sublime. We opened with coffee rubbed Thumbelina, chicory salt, carrot verde & sunchoke paired with 2018 Monte Rosso Cabernet. Ensuing was smoked pecan Romanesco, grilled focaccia, watermelon radish & piquillo aioli paired with 2017 Howell Mountain Cabernet. On deck was a truffle gnocchi with pancetta & pesto paired with 2018 Howell Mountain Cabernet and following was a lamb lollipop with endive, balsamic & mint paired with 2019 Howell Mountain Cabernet. Finally, we enjoyed a blueberry tartlet with spiced mascarpone and fennel pollen paired with the 2018 Lot 1 Cabernet. This is a must add to your winery list! (www.louismartini.com)

With Summer in full swing, it is a perfect time to visit Napa Valley. I encourage you to make your reservation a few weeks ahead of your visit. Cheers!

Onboard With Online Learning

The rise of the Internet and related technologies over the last 20+ years have had a significant impact on education. One of the most far-reaching changes is the availability of online courses and distance learning. Academic opportunities used to be limited to what was offered at the local school or community college. Now, a tremendous range of courses is available through online providers. At my school, Contra Costa Christian, our students take online courses for a variety of reasons, whether it’s for a specialty course we don’t offer, a class that doesn’t fit their schedule or to improve a grade. If you have students in school, it is very likely that they at least be given the opportunity to take online courses before they are done with high school. When choosing whether to take online classes, there are a few questions for parents to ask:

Is my student’s learning style, maturity and motivation a good match for the online learning environment? Online classes do not have the regular, face-to-face interaction that helps students learn, stay organized and be accountable. Students may need extra parent support to help them stay on track.

Does the course structure meet your needs? Online courses may be synchronous, with scheduled meeting times, much like the in-person classes taken at a traditional school. Other classes are asynchronous, where the student is free to work at his or her convenience. Some classes are a hybrid.

Is the provider accredited and by whom?

Accreditation is the indicator that the course provider has allowed outside evaluators to certify that the course and its teachers meet normal educational standards.

Will the credits be accepted by my student’s high school and/ or meet college admission requirements? Even if the course is accredited, many high schools have policies for courses taken online. Check with your student’s counselor for details. Additionally, if the course is part of a college or university’s admissions requirement, check to make sure it will be accepted. The UC/CSU system has an online database (hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselist) that can be searched to see if the courses have been approved to satisfy UC/CSU admissions requirements.

Early Alert Canines (EAC) is

launching a Puppy Raising Program and looking for Puppy Raisers!

Their mission is to improve the health, safety, and well-being of people with insulin-dependent diabetes through partnerships with certified low blood sugar alert dogs.

EAC greatly values the volunteers who participate in puppy raising to help train future service dogs. These compassionate individuals open their hearts and homes to provide a safe and loving environment for our young puppies. They receive comprehensive support and training from the EAC team, attending classes, public outings, and learning basic service dog obedience.

By becoming a puppy raiser, you will have the opportunity to make a tremendous impact by raising a life-saving partner. To become a puppy raiser, you will be required to open your home to a puppy between the ages of 8 weeks and 18 months.

You will need to attend weekly training sessions at EAC, monthly public outings (in-person only), provide food and other supplies according to EAC guidelines, and dedicate time to train the puppy in basic obedience skills. You will also need to monitor the puppy during the day. The time commitment ranges between 4 and 18 months and EAC works around your schedule, allowing you to take breaks and vacations while someone else cares for the dog.
